Hello Sophie! I am new to your site and find it very informative. I live in New-Brunswick, Canada and must rely on on-line shopping for my flock as little is available in-store. Shortly after moving here from Montreal, I lost Mango (love bird) and Chap (White Front Amazon). I don't know if the long drive was too much for them or what else might have happened? Unfortunately, there are no avian vets around here. Now I have an 8 year old Macaw (Lolita), a 15 year old Panamanian Amazon (Jayla), a 1 year old Conure and 1 year Kakariki. I feed them TOPs and a variety of fruit and vegetables. Also, they really enjoy oatmeal (porridge) in the morning. They quite definitely prefer fruits to vegetables and will pick them out of their food. I will be watching your video on how to get them to eat their veggies. Thank you for your passion and informative videos.
Hi Danielle, thanks for watching! 🥰 Have you seen this parrot supplies store based in Canada? www.theparrotshop.ca/ Also I'm sorry to hear that you lost your birds 💙 here are two vets in New-Brunswick which say they treat birds: www.fah.ca/ www.elmwoodvethospital.com/
@@BirdNerdSophie Thank you for your reply and suggestions. Yes, I know Stephanie from the Parrot Shop as she was my former supplier. Unfortunately, shipping rates are outrageous from Ontario to New-Brunswick. I did find Chirp N Dale closer to home. I live in a rural area (Miramichi Bay) and Moncton is about 2 hours away. Still, it would be worth consulting them in case of emergency.
Awesome video. Not sure about other places, but here, we get a ton of dandelion and clover. Free flowers :D Never thought about drying them out before, I should give that a try.
Hi again Sophie, on one of your video's, you mentioned a brand of a ready sprouted mix, its the same video you were trying some pop corn out. I can't seem to find it. Could you direct me please as id like to buy some. Thank you so much. Kind regards vanessa xxx
I don't need to buy a seed mix, i have le trés cool BNS seed mix! Still converting them over to that mix! As soon as i do I'd bet that veggies will be easier for the birbs
The pellets that were sent home with our green cheek are awful 😱 Luckily I started mixing in TOPs right away (he used to avoid them, now he's learned to dunk them) and he eats ALL his chop. I only worry he's not getting enough VitD/Calcium, especially in the winter months?
That's awesome! For calcium, I make sure the chop contains calcium rich veg, or I sprinkle chia seed over it! I think Harrisons contains Vit D but TOP's doesn't - you could possibly use an avian UV lamp but research isn't conclusive whether they work well or not! Egg yolk also has some vitamin D in so you could offer eggs once a week!
Great video. I do have a question concerning some vegetables. Its quite commonly said NO CHOCOLATE , NO ADVOCADO, NO MUSHROOMS, NO ONIONS BUT I have heard confusing comments on other vegetables such as Asparagus, Celery, tomato( meaty part not seed), Broccoli. Are these safe or just not desirable? Also I a m in the USA. I don't know where to get 'good' seeds, for eating or sprouting.??? If you could give me your opinion ,,I would appreciate it.
Broccoli is perfectly safe, celery is okay occasionally but the stringy bits should be removed, tomato is okay (only the fruit_ once or twice a month, all of the others should not be fed! For individual seeds, check out nuts.com :)
I have budgies. I don't understand how much soaked seed and how much soaked and sprouted grain and legumes. If I mix all them together how much. I store my veggie chop and the soaked, sprouted seed grain legumes separate. How do you do this
Roughly half a tablespoon of veg and half a tablespoon of soaked items per bird in the morning and increase or decrease depending on how much they eat!
@@BirdNerdSophie thank you so much. I was worried about giving too much of the grains and seeds. Lol I think I over think this . Sophie thank you so much for being there for me in this journey. You have tought me so much and have been very patient. My budgies are so happy that I found you.
Hi Sophie, I have a young Kakariki and she loves fresh food but she seems to be extra hungry now I take her seed out for some of the day and leave her with fresh food only. The fresh food includes mixed sprouted seeds. Should young birds have more access to seed while they’re still young? She’s approx 12 weeks
Hey! I would be looking at offering a wide variety of fresh foods rather than offering more seeds as you are already doing! Is she definitely eating the fresh food?
Thanks for replying, yes she’s eating loads and has lots of variety in her fresh foods so I know she’s getting a broad range. I’ll keep things as they are, I need to get a perch and start weighing her (thanks for that info too) so I’ll do that to keep an eye on her. Thank you for your videos, I’m learning so much.
Is there a possible way that you could recomend a good flower and seed mix in malta? Ive spent ages looking but i dont know if they are good. Its ok if you dont know any i understand because ive tried also!
They’re okay! I have used their budgie seed in the past, though I make my own version of it now, Pickles loves their sesame sticks and I use their dried carrot and beetroot. I don’t rate their other products though as they’re full of peanuts and sunflower seeds!
Hey Sophie, I was wondering if you could help answer a question for me. I feed my cockatiels Harrison’s pellets but I’m debating switching them to a cold pressed pellet like TOP’s. The only reason I’m a bit confused is that TOP’s contains spinach powder. I thought birds weren’t supposed to have spinach daily. Maybe you or one of your viewers can offer some insight? Thank you!
@@BirdNerdSophie I was wondering if that was the case - thanks! I think I’ll give them a try and see if my birds like them since they are supposed to be healthier and they are actually cheaper than the Harrison’s.
Thank you for another great video, Sophie, you are the best! And the fact that you are in GB is a bonus for me, because I can find all the things you talk about in our stores. I have been binging on your bird food videos, and I have a quick-ish question: my 2 boys (cockatiels) dislike fresh food. Sam will eat some mash potato or some rice, but that's it. I have a dehydrator, and was thinking of chopping veggies bird-size, about pellet-size, and dry them up. Things like kale, carrots, pumpkin, peppers, and even some good fruit (but they only eat grapes, and not that often). That way I could add this dried food to their beloved seeds, slowly reducing the seed quantity. Is it doable? Will dehydrated veggies be as good as the fresh ones? I had this idea checking out the dried sprouts by HappyBird.
Thank you so much 😊 dehydrated is fine to offer but not as nutritious as fresh as some of the nutrients are lost in the dehydration process! They’re still fine to offer as part of a balanced diet! Have you seen my video on how to get your bird to eat veggies? And my interviews with Dr Jason Crean?
Great video! Can I feed my cockatiel savoy Cabbage? I'm reading conflicting information online due to the negative affects Cabbage can have on their calcium levels? He had a small amount today and seemed to enjoy it :'(
When should I feed my cockatiel an evening meal? What should that consist of? I know you said for it to be dry meal, but you recommended against pellets. So i am confused about what should I feed them then at dinner time.
Thank you - I’ve been feeling guilty about pellets. My parrotlet has no interest in them. The only problem I’m finding with chop is that it gets slimy by day 4ish - also making it for a parrotlet its such a small quantity. I prefer fresh, not frozen.
It can be tough, our chop lasts 6-7 days and I make it fresh every time! You can add fresh oregano to help limit bacteria growth and keep it fresher! You can also plan your meals with their chop so you can use vegetables you’d already be buying!
hello I love your videos, I don't actually have a bird but i am getting one in December ( cockatiel or budgie) I have a cage and toys, but I need food for the bird. I live in Melbourne Australia. Can you please help me?
Hi Sophie! So I wanna tell you something. I have tamed my cockatiels when they were babys. And they were used to baby bird food. But now, they have grown up. But they don't wan't to eat anything instead of baby bird food! What can I do?
I have a question! So I go to school and have 2 cockatiels, I am gone to school from 8:00am to 3:40pm, after that I am gone for another 2-3 hours, so I am gone all day from 8:00am to 6:00pm… do I leave the petite dry mix in their cage the whole time I’m gone and then once I’m back give them the chop, sprouts and seeds? I really need help and advise!!!
Hey! Do you have someone who could change their food in the afternoon for you? It’s usually better to feed the chop and sprouts in the morning, and dry mix and seeds in the evening!
@@BirdNerdSophie ok so, I have made a bit of a plan, I will wake up the birds are have them out of their cage for an hour to eat their chop and sprouts before I go to school, then once I’m gone away they will have their roudybush pellets in their cage while I’m gone to peck away at (I want to upgrade to tops one day) then once I get back from school and riding lessons, I will give them dry mix and seeds for dinner :)
I had my female have strange over fibrous droppings (as some people may know) and I could not track down ANYTHING she may have eaten after the vet said they suspected she just got into something. 5 minutes ago I just seen her on her stand with a chunk of bark in her foot she seemed to be eating? She has had a weird behaviour of trying to break pieces of concrete near my fireplace. She has plucked for the last 10 years or so and is at the prime age of 23. Are these normal bird behaviours? I am starting to wonder if she has a mineral deficiency. The way she B-lines for oat milk (ingredients: salt/oats/water) makes me wonder if it is calcium related. (sorry for the 3rd book) I just know your channel is more... evidence driven then I heard this so I think it's true. Hope this is relatable or interesting to someone ❤
There's a lot of reasons why birds exhibit these behaviours - they can be through curiosity and play though! She might benefit from having some blood work done to see if she has any vitamin or mineral deficiencies so you can get some solid answers from the tests!
I asked my mom to buy some spices like star anise and cloves and I also found goji berries and dried rose petals! I hope she can buy them for Fluffy and Maya 😁 Also, with the rose petals, do I put it in the chop or in the dried evening meal?
(Off topic from video) So I just bought my conure some new perches off of Amazon. They came in 30 mins ago and I already noticed the wood has fuzzy mold on it. I used sandpaper to get it off but I don’t know if that will help. While I was cleaning it I noticed rust on the screws they drill into the wood… should I be worried;what should I do?
hey sophie google keeps telling me i can only leave their chop in their cage for an hour a day but i fear that’s not enough time for them to eat a good amount. how long do you leave your chop with them??
I get my food from bird paradise in New Jersey they really know birds an educated customers they do a good job with their birds an check your cage setup and everything before that birds aloud to come home you also have to check your birds weight and call it in every other day for a couple weeks and if you donr have a scale you have to promise to bring it back in for weight checks so I trust them
Thank you so much, I found this video very insightful. I've recently adopted a green cheek conure and Quaker parrot. These two are my first bird; I'm learning as I go along and I was curious if there were any Australian brands that you would suggest (Specifically: Brisbane, QLD)?
My baby get her nut and dry mix in the am because I'm at work then in the evening gets her chop before bed I take the chop out and swap in for her day time food im at work all day so I can't leave the chop in she gets in the am and evening on the weekends though because I'm home
I live in malta a small island in the Mediterranean sea. I have a quacker parrot Abot 7 weeks old and he is still being hand fed with a syringe by me because i was told so by the pet shop i bought it from. In his cage i put vegetables and water but when inside he dosnt try to go down to eat them. Is this normal?
Great video as usual Sophie! My guys go crazy in the evening for your sprouted seed mix! I usually use a mix of Harrisons and TOP’s in foraging toys as, particularly Kipling loves Harrisons. TOP’s always seem to be out of stock though which is pretty annoying, don’t really wanna pay £100 shipping from America😅 In terms of flowers, I often see flower mixes at the pet store where I work. They’re aimed for rodents but I was curious to ask if you think they would generally be safe for birds and if there’s anything to look out for as not appropriate? Thanks!
Yeah I think there's been some trouble getting stock over here for a while! I think it depends on the ingredients, you can always DM me some and I can have a look, though often these mixes aren't organic so I usually avoid them! Also avoid any with hay in them!
@@BirdNerdSophie Hi Sophie, I wonder why we need to avoid hay. Is hay toxic to birds? At the moment I put hay at the bottom of the cage (because I could not find similar materials you recommend in Australia), and my cockatiels like to forage on them. I got worried when I saw this comment about hay. Thanks very much in advanced!
@@KJ-ii1hq when hay is wet or old, dormant fungal spores become active and risk giving your birds aspergillosis which is very hard to treat. Timothy hay can be offered in foraging toys but it should be replaced regularly! I’d recommend going for dust free, untreated pine shavings instead!
@@BirdNerdSophie Thanks Sophie! This is very helpful! At the moment I got these hay products directly from petshops, and they look quite dry to me; I change them each week too. So I hope they haven't caused my birdies any bad issues! From now I will swap to pine shavings as you recommended. Many thanks again!
My bird will not eat much apart from millit he will scream and shout and run around at the bottom of his cage what can I do I offer veg and fruit and other nuts

I've tried almost anything but my 5mo cockatiel is a really picky eater. Only way to make her eat at least a bit is by pretending to eat it myself... I don't want to remove her regular seeds from the cage either. I'm hopeless :(
Hello I have 2 birds that are on a biscuit diet (weird and unhealthy I know) when I got them, they ate formula now they are addicted to wet biscuits and rice, they don't eat veggies. No matter what they won't eat veggies from the bowl, they eat veggies and anything from my hand or finger, they eat wet biscuits most of the time, some seeds sometimes, the biscuits contains some healthy stuff for birds and some unhealthy, the biscuits is crunchy but I wet it under water tab and give them because that's how they wanna eat it :( 1 of them is still young, doesn't eat rice . Only wet biscuits, the other one eats rice, wet biscuits. I have been trying to hard to get them on proper diet but they just won't, they are addicted to rice and biscuits, :( any tips?
Hey Rose! Did you checks out my video on how to get your bird to get veg? There are lots of tips in there including eating the things yourself! @@BirdNerdSophie hello, yes I did, I tried all of them but still no luck, I did left them for 30 mins several times and no luck! They were screaming for biscuits like crazy so I ended up giving them wet biscuits :(

My parents are traveling away for 1 o 2 days and I have to stay in my friend's house with her kids and my birds (3 birds) shpuld i take them out in that house? My cockatiel is extremely scared of new things, he has been with us for almost a year and still isn't used to our other rooms, ot takes maybe a few weeks to get a little used to the room, is it ok to not take any of the birds out of their cage for a day or 2? Because my friend house is dangerous plus they have 4 little kids.
@@roseankara3054 birds can get scared in new places but keep their routine to help them adapt! And yes they’ll be fine not coming out for a couple of days. @@BirdNerdSophie how often would you suggest giving the socked seed mix in the evening in a week? She loves her chops In the morning and I don't want to give her the same food in the evening.
Cockatiels are grass parakeets that have evolved mainly monocot seeds and monocot greens. They feed on the ground. Very different than arboreal, South American parrots like the Green Cheek Conure. So, in actuality, your Tiels need some seeds and grain (can be cooked grains like bulgar wheat berries, barley, etc.). I would say a bit of fruit with the veggies for the conures but no fruit for a grass parakeet like a Tiel. It is important to recognize the huge difference between the dietary needs of a Conure vs. Cockatiel. I disagree with you that nuts should not be part of a Green Cheek Conure diet. The fatty acids in various nuts is very different than in a seed and arboreal parrots eat tree nuts in the the wild. Obviously, their beaks are not evolved to eat large nuts like a Macaw but they eat smaller tree nuts which also have similar fatty acids as bigger tree nuts. Cockatiels have weak beaks adapted to shuck seeds so I think that they do not have a tree nut requirement like a South American, arboreal parrot.
Yes a small amount seeds can benefit most parrot species - I recommend watching my interviews with Dr Jason Crean who is an avian nutrition expert for our in depth diet discussions!

Have you seen this parrot supplies store based in Canada? www.theparrotshop.ca/
Also I'm sorry to hear that you lost your birds 💙 here are two vets in New-Brunswick which say they treat birds:

@@BirdNerdSophie Thank you for your reply and suggestions. Yes, I know Stephanie from the Parrot Shop as she was my former supplier. Unfortunately, shipping rates are outrageous from Ontario to New-Brunswick. I did find Chirp N Dale closer to home. I live in a rural area (Miramichi Bay) and Moncton is about 2 hours away. Still, it would be worth consulting them in case of emergency.
Your videos always have so much great information
Thanks Kylee!
Awesome video.
Not sure about other places, but here, we get a ton of dandelion and clover. Free flowers :D Never thought about drying them out before, I should give that a try.
Thank you! 😊 We don’t have a private garden and it’s a long ol’ walk to the woods so I don’t risk fresh flowers yet until we can move!

Hey! I’m afraid I haven’t got enough information on that, but a fresh whole food diet is usually best like in this video 😊

This is the one I showed in my video! thebestbirdfood.com/products/seed-elicious-tiny-beak
A proper diet is veary important! 😸❤ Your birds are so cute the thumbnail is adorable ! 🐦 your pineapple conure💚 is so cuttttte! ☺️

I do have a question concerning some vegetables. Its quite commonly said NO CHOCOLATE
, NO ADVOCADO, NO MUSHROOMS, NO ONIONS BUT I have heard confusing comments on other vegetables such as Asparagus, Celery, tomato( meaty part not seed), Broccoli.
A T-perch for the scales I mean!
Is there a possible way that you could recomend a good flower and seed mix in malta? Ive spent ages looking but i dont know if they are good. Its ok if you dont know any i understand because ive tried also!
Hey! Are there particular ones you are looking at that I can give my opinion on? Otherwise you could buy the components separately!
What is your opinion on Tidymix?
They’re okay! I have used their budgie seed in the past, though I make my own version of it now, Pickles loves their sesame sticks and I use their dried carrot and beetroot. I don’t rate their other products though as they’re full of peanuts and sunflower seeds!
Oh yaaaaaasssssss awesome!!! I have been waiting for this!!!
Ok now I'm gonna watch it 😉
Hope you like it!
Thank you!
It’s such a small quantity that it’s not an issue 😊
He had a small amount today and seemed to enjoy it :'(
It’s fine in moderation 😊
When should I feed my cockatiel an evening meal? What should that consist of? I know you said for it to be dry meal, but you recommended against pellets. So i am confused about what should I feed them then at dinner time.
Here’s what we feed in the evening 😊 th-cam.com/video/oppx-Wv9HEs/w-d-xo.html&feature=shares

@@BirdNerdSophie ok great, I’ll make sure to send over the ingredients next time I’m in. Good to know about the hay thing, thanks.
@@BirdNerdSophie Hi Sophie, I wonder why we need to avoid hay. Is hay toxic to birds? @@KJ-ii1hq when hay is wet or old, dormant fungal spores become active and risk giving your birds aspergillosis which is very hard to treat.

Hi I could do with an end with my
With my
Cockatiels are grass parakeets that have evolved mainly monocot seeds and monocot greens.
