    A few more things...
    1) this video focuses on complete wheelsets, not custom built mix and match rims/wheels
    2) I focused on high-engagment hubs because they make a huge difference, and if you're upgrading wheels, you should spring for higher engagement.
    3) The Hunt trailwides have recently been updated and feature a new rim. That's good news, good because the rims featured in this video have been extremely soft and they dent easily. In fact, I've never used a rim rhat dents so easily. Because of this, i recommend a different wheelset unless you live in extremely smooth areas. I'll come back from a ride and see 4 new dents in areas where the other wheels would be fine.
    4) the Nukeproof hzn v2 a have been fantastic and have really held up well.
    5) the stans flow (not pictured here) have been fantastic wheels as well. I just don't own a set and can't speak for the longevity of the hubs.

Dt 350 straightpulls and archs or flows depending on your weight or riding. You can build a 1500g set for 600 bucks, great budget ultra racing wheelset. You MUST use conical nipple washers and sapim secure lock nipples per discussion with Stans, I didnt and mine fell apart...several times. Stans wheels radially deflect more than about any other hoops due to the low section height. This means when you rim strike the wheel deflects and spokes go slack instead of denting (can still happen though, less likely). The slack spokes allow the nipples to back off if not spoke frozen or locking nipples. When the spokes regain tension the nipple washers spread out the load.

I think Bontrager Line 30 Comp would be a good option if you are on even tighter budget. They just updated them about a month ago. 29 id, 54t but can be upgraded to 108t with extra springs and pawls for $30. I think they are $300 for wheelset! Granted, this may be more of a sidegrade for some people, but still an upgrade for lower end bikes with narrower, maybe non tubeless wheels and low engagement hubs. Wonder what your thoughts are on those. Too bad I made a small dent in the rear one running too low of a pressure so mine can now be used with tube only. I have a Horizon v2 rear waiting to be setup on my Middlechild, so great to hear you like them.

Helpful. Thank you. Can I ask your advice on alloy rims? I ride a 2019 Salsa Timberjack 29 mostly for long distance bikepacking. 2.35 front & 2.2 rear tires. For example, like the "Fools Loop" in your area (2 years ago), I ride mostly gravel roads & chunky jeep trails. Rarely do I do anything more "spicy" than the Black Canyon Trail section of the loop. That said, the Maah Daah Hey 100 & Leadville are still on my bucket list. Still, my tires are almost always on the graound.... What alloy rims should I keep in consideration?

I picked up a Norco Torrent S2, and was lucky enough to get it with Stan's Flow S2 rims. They were assembled with cheap Shimano hubs, but the Stan's rim profile is impressive. I may get a Flow Mk 4 rear wheel to take advantage of their new magnetic hub with 1.66° of engagement! Even the E-sync is decent at 8.18°. They look more robust than the outgoing hubs.

If you’re running tubeless then the Hunt pinch flat factor shouldn’t be an issue right?
I’m tight on cash so I’m leaning for the Hunt purely from a price point factor, but the new wheels will be going on my bikepacking hardtail - do you have an opinion as to which of these would hold up best under load?

You talked about the two ends of the spectrum (these versus wheels like Zipp), but one of the best things to happen in he last 4 years or so is the growth of the middle ground. The ~$850 mark can get you carbon rims now as well as some really nice aluminum rims with incredible hubs.

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yes, but most of those rims ride extremely harsh, especially on a hardtail. Not all carbon is created equal. If i could find $850 wheels that ride like my ZIPPs, they'd be my top recommendation. I prefer these aluminum wheels over any sub $1k carbon wheelset.

aHa, thanks for the review. I just bought a new rear wheel and am getting the matching front in a 28h. I got... the Arch Mk3 for my Spesh fuse. I am running 2.3's and I wanted a lighter wheel. It's not terribly rocky here in Socal where I ride and I just wanted something to keep up with the rocket friends for the climbs and for the odd race or 5 that I may jump into when local races come back. Will it be too hot to come ride with you guys in AZ in late May..? I'd bring a beefier tire and rim set. Thanks! Oh, and just upgraded to a GX groupset. My rig is feeling tight!

I recently brought horizon v2 as a replacement rear wheel on my trial hardtail. I trashed my rear wheel and my front wheel is still running great and has the same inner width as the v2s. Love the high engagement and the compliant ride feel compared to the stock rear wheel. I ride really agressive and it held up great so far not even a loose spoke. Great hardtail upgrade also if it's only the rear wheel especially for the price!

I have a factory set of the 35s. The Sun Ringle hubs engagement is not great and not upgradeable (36 or similar POE). They are nothing on the 350s (54 POE) on my other wheelset. Been happy with the rims and compliance particularly for the low retail cost available locally to us in Australia. They ship with HG and XD freewheels, pre taped tubeless, with valves and sealant supplied which is a bonus.
They were cheaper than the models reviewed in this video - like half the price of the spanks in Australia.
I've been happy but would think I would prefer the Spanks, NP or Hunts personally but made a choice based on available funds to get me out and riding. If I was to upgrade anything on my hard tail it would be the wheels but I'm going to ride the Ringles into the ground first!

I prefer 35i rims for 2.6. You can technically put 2.6s on just about any mtb rim, but the narrower the rim, the more squirm you're going to feel and the more likely you'll burp them on hard cornering.
