Shaping a Ratchet

  • There are a few cases where a shaper is actually more handy to have than a milling machine - and this is one of them.
Today, I'll machine a one-way ratchet mechanism with a hand-ground profiling tool... on the shaper.
    Enjoy!

I think perhaps the best indication of a true craftsman is someone who can find a path from "where we are right now" to "where we want to be". No milling machine? Ah, I have a shaper. Dividing head doesn't work right? I'll make the parts I need. Not quite stable while making the cuts? My measurements show that it is of no consequence. Every step of the way, you showed that problems were just opportunities (especially the last 5 seconds which turned out to be a great opportunity to relieve stress!) I really enjoyed this one. Hopefully, one day we'll know what invention this clever ratcheting mechanism is for.

That's what I love about the hobby.
If this was my job, I couldn't experiment around like that.
A milling machine is faster, so go get one.
Buying a proper dividing head is quicker than tampering about with that old, worn-out thing.
Ain't got the special tool? Don't grind it, buy it!
As long as I don't need to make a living off it, and pay for my working time, however, I can spend as much time tinkering as I like, solely focusing on how to achieve the results I want with the tools I have.
And, surprise surprise, most parts can be made with downright archaic tools. All it takes is some extra time and patience.

I found you whilst looking for videos to explain what a shaper was. I have 2 in the shop and whoever said that you can't make money with a shaper apparently has a limited skill set.
    Good work sir!

You need a little extra time and a bit of creativity. But grinding your own tooling is where these things really shine - try making your own dovetail cutter for a mill!

I like the challenge of proving to all the Nay-Sayers that you can get by really well with a shaper.
Showing cases in which you're actually better off with one than with a mill... Well, I hate to admit it, but it makes me satisfied :D

👍👌👏 Extremely well done again and as always (video and work).
2 months ago CEE (channel Cutting Edge Engineering) in Australia showed, that they had bought an enormous big Klopp shaper. Maybe you are interested to see this monster of a precise machine. At least I found it fascinating, although I have no use for a shaper.
    Best regards, luck and health.
