Everything that is related to a headphones' performance is proportional to the amplitude of the impulse because headphones are minumum phase. All acoustic effects like soundstage, imaging, detail, dynamics etc are products of non-linear distortion created when there is a rise or fall in the amplitude in the response. They can all be decribed by the frequency response in minumum phase.
^This is absolutely right, with the possible exception of acoustic impedance and how the headphones sit on your head, which can contribute to the sense of soundstage/spaciousness, as well as physical size, which can affect the perceived size of the sounds. The other thing is, there's no inherent sound quality to a driver. So it would be better if Josh avoided talking about the 'driver' being detailed or faster like at 1:45, since with the exception of any roll off or difference in bass and treble extension they would be operating at the same 'speed' (frequency).
@michaeljbus people do still subjectively report spaciousness effects in headphones with high acoustic Z. However, headphones with low impedance have very consistent subjective evaluations, which makes sense.
I've heard this before and I do not doubt it, but what I've never understood about it is why it is, then, that planars so tend to sound so much faster subjectively than dynamic driver headphones, and in general headphones (and speakers) with reduced moving mass present as more detailed. I have a hard time believing it is simply sighted bias as I have certainly experienced it myself despite not expecting it to be a thing. Is this something that shows up in FR in a way that we can readily see?
@davids2214 One thing we are still unaware of is the psychoacoustic effects of acoustic impedance. That is the variance in the headphones properties due to the impedance differential between the driver and the atmosphere around it. The lower the acoustic impedance of a headphone, the more consistent the headphones' acoustic properties are on a different head. When we look at headphones that people say are extremely fast and detailed sounding like STAX and Hifimans, we see them posses very low HpTF or acoustic impedance. This effect is still proportional to the FR, but can't be measured over a single FFT sweep.
@davids2214 these are things that would show up in FR, particularly FR measured at the eardrum. That sense of speed can be attributed to the balance between different parts of the frequency response. I can only speculate as to the correlations between particular qualities and FR characteristics - for example the planar plucked quality (eg that most Hifimans present) might be associated with the more jagged fine grained treble response and balance between fundamentals and harmonics. In theory if you could EQ 2 headphones with different drivers to present exactly the same FR at the eardrum, they would be perceived as exactly the same. In practice there are fine grained FR differences and other factors that mean it would be difficult in practice to make 2 headphones sound identical.
Good video, I did think it was funny you bopping your head in the Diana at 10:02 with the headphones not plugged in. In general it would be great where you talk about some songs presenting differently on different headphones to name some songs as examples.
Still no Final Audio D8000/Pro, and the upcoming D8000 DC/Pro headphones reviews on most mainstream youtube channels. I would love to compare the Susvara with those.
I ve heard both D8000 DC and DC Pro. Both are bass monsters with good technicalities but for example Diana DZ is better in terms of resolution and detail. Havent heard the Susvara but I think that they are completely different sounding headphones. D8000 DC warm and bassy, DC Pro were little bit stronger in technicalities and brighter. Susvara will be bass light and airy compared to both Finals.
@@marekkouril7134 Thank you for your impressions. I own the D8000 Pro and yes they are really good at bass, after owning it for almost 2 years now I realized how clean bass (not the amount but quality and speed) is so important to elevate the entire sound. I wish more reviewers would give more spotlight to the Final products because I think they are at a good price range for how they sound with excellent build quality and craftmanship.
I’m still surprised you like the EM2 so much. I purchased them and sold them because they weren’t working for me. I then demoed them a few more times to make sure it wasn’t mine unit since a lot of people like them. I don’t know, they wanna be warm but at that 6k sharp peak that’s throws it all off for me. I recommend giving the Final Audio D7000 a try if you haven’t heard them yet. Rumor has it they pair very well with the Evo you have hiding in the back of your B-Roll.
I’m interested in buying my first audiophile headphones. If price doesn’t matter, and all I’m looking for is pure enjoyment, what would you recommend? Thanks.
