Primitive Cooking Wild Bird, Cattails Over Fire! | 100% Wild Food Survival Challenge

  • In day 6 of our survival challenge things finally work out with a wild turkey...persistence finally pays off! We land this bird in the early morning with a near perfect spring turkey outing. Some soft yelps after a tree cackle brings this guy into range. A loan hen is too hard to resist, but just when the gobbler decides it's a set-up, it's too late. Bird down! A welcome addition to my wild food buffet!
To see the processing of the wild turkey click here (not for sensitive viewers): • Video
Full Season 5 Playlist: • Season 5: The Wilderne...
I will show you how to clean and cook the bird over a spit roast on an open fire.
The goal is to replace any calories we burn foraging for wild foods in order to balance our energy expenditures as modern foragers.
We bait our lobster traps with alewife or river herring which we dip netted the day before. This is all about survival and eating the foods that we can easily forage and scavenge from wild sources. We are really trying to balance our calories eating only wild edibles.
We will show you how to cook and clean the clams and eat the stomach. We will remove the skin and also purge and wash the clams and boil in water.

The Wilderness Living Challenge is not a "survival challenge," but more like a test of the modern hunter gatherer to sustain himself on wild foods only. We will weight ourselves at the start of the challenge and weight out at the end. If we lose any weight at all, we lose the challenge!
Check out Zach Fowler: • Catch And Cook Alewife...
Follow along as we struggle to get wild foods!
I am joined by Zach Fowler on his home turf in Maine, USA in the spring.
Here, we plan to do Season 5 of The Wilderness Living Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to gain or maintain our body weight eating only the wild food we can collect on site using whatever means necessary.
Winning the Wilderness Living Challenge is harder than it seems.
Season 5: Maine Spring, takes place in Maine, USA with coastal food priorities including fish, clams, crab, seaweed, groundhog, pigeon, turkey, dandelion, cattail, and whatever else is edible! Nothing is off the menu, if it's edible, we'll eat it.
We make use of all the resources in this challenge to meet the demands for calories imposed by the human body!

@@TheWoodedBeardsman It is best in soup. It needs to cook a while to loosen up the skin from the bone. I have never had Turkey feet, but chicken feet are excellent, and I imagine Turkey feet are just as edible. It is basically all skin (the best part). Chicken feet soup is usually a Jewish dish. According to my dad, my Jewish great grandmother made the best chicken feet soup.

So I would say, if you can get down to giving yourself 4 accessories. Like a knife, a single shot bow or air rifle and say anything from a pan to garlic, salt, potato or oil,it starts to get rewarding. Ican testify, it feels very satisfying!

the water and cook for a few hours. This, as you know, is how aged Mothers made soup stock. Bit of those ferns and a bit of meat and booyah (that's what the kids say apparently) enough soup for two days.....(amazing how much of an expert you can become sitting on a sofa watching YT.)

I just realize you guys have plenty of food. During like Day 4 or 5 I thought you guys didn’t have enough food even though you got full from the lobsters.
I’m gonna predict that you maintain weight and Zach lost weight. I think Zach lost weight cos he is a bigger guy, so I think his body will lose his body fat. That’s what I’m thinking and I could be 💯% wrong
Do you have to tag your kill? Cos you had a green tag on the leg
Could you cook the turkey in an underground oven? Or would that take too long?

Why wouldn't you wash a little bit of that blood off of that turkey? That's why it turned so black so quickly. Congealed and cooked blood on the skin. And WHY would you not season it before toasting? The part where he kept slicing slivers off the Turkey then covering with seasoning gave me anxiety .lol

That's the nicest looking wild turkey I've ever seen!
It doesn't have the hard calus on three point of the brest bone like any wild turkey I've ever got. Looks a lot like a farm raised bird.....

Dude , grab the primary wing feathers from inside the elbow on underside of the wing , one hand on upper wing ,after stripping it the feathers from armpit to elbow , pull feathers outwards and they will strip off in one whole strip all the way down the forewing ,elbow to tip. As long as you push pull between your hands , the primary feathers will come off the whole way. All these feathers will be in a long strip still attached to one another. Underside outward to topside of wing. Do not eat the elongated flesh on top of beak unless you want to end up being snoody ...hahaha...it is called the 'snood ' . Best part of turkey meat is the last part to go over the fence ...tail meat ...Mmmnnnn !

Splitting it in half like that was really smart and clever!
It seems simple now but I would not have thought to do that! XD I would just die in the wilderness! Fuck! >.

You made that turkey plucking hard. What you do, take a pot of water and heat it up and bring it to almost a boil so it's nice and hot but not boiling. Dunk the turkey for a minute or two, and the feathers will come off extremely easily.

Fullstop congratulated on the Turkey guys wild Turkey is way better than farm raised. You need to have deep fried wild turkey

Congrats on your first Turkey, and ill have to try this with my next one because people have a hard time keeping the breast moist even on a farm raised bird lol. I usually end up breasting mine out and cooking the legs and thighs in a soup or stew and cutting the breast into strips for like fettuccini alfredo because ive always had wild turkey end up dry so ill try this next time.

The organ with the stones in it that grinds the food up is the gizzard. To make it less chewy take off the inside lining.
Splitting the bird in two is called spatchcocking or butterflying.

Here in California we cant even turkey hunt til dark like you can with every other species here. Shoot time used to end at 4pm but they justrecently changed it to 5pm. Im assuming to keep ppl from waiting by a roost tree and shootin them off it or something.

I’m pretty sure for the clams you just need to let them sit in a bucket of fresh water for a while before cooking and all the grit will be spat out by them as they die and suffocate from not having salt water.

you should soak the turkey (and all other birds) in boiling water for a couple minutes; plucking it will become easier then.

It would've been easier if you split the bird in half, then cook it on bed of coals. Coals gives off even heat which is good for cooking big game fowls.

Does the Woodobo seasoning have salt? You could have brined the turkey for a few hours then smoked/roasted it. I bet that would have tasted good, too.
