    Criminally underrated guitarist - his work on The Moonlit Knight, the Aisle of Plenty outro, Blood On The Rooftops, Hogweed, Fly On A Windshield, Volcano and especially Firth Of Fifth still gives me goosebumps, after all these years.

      If only he could've foresaw how big Genesis were to become a few short yrs later in the 80's, I'm sure he never would've left.

      @@corkydukeII5898 Steve never fit in with the poppy Genesis of the 80's and he was never in it for the money so IMO your'e dead wrong....

      @@Thundergod- I was being somewhat facetious....but you're right, Steve never fit truly in with the other members since he kinda considered himself an 'outsider' with the band. He grew up very introverted, never attended public schools like Tony, Mike and Peter. But in the end, it's the same story as so many others like Steve who decide to leave....and that is, just not enough of his (Steve's) creative material was finding it's way onto Genesis Albums.

    • @Thundergod-
      @Thundergod- 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@corkydukeII5898 Kinda sounds like another introverted British guitarist who went under appreciated for years and didn't realize his full potential until he stepped out of the shadows of
      the other giant egos in the band. I'm so glad that Steve is bringing back the fantastic Genesis music. On his current tour he's playing Selling England in it's entirety and I plan on
      getting tickets when he comes around to The US this October....

      @@iangarner8857 Yeah that's true. I wouldn't really file that one under "complex" like you were suggesting though, it certainly wasn't made at the heights of their abilities. I'll admit I'm splitting hairs though, they still made remarkable music at a very young age.

    • @stiffrichard2816
      @stiffrichard2816 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It was the British school system. Musical talent was considered prestigeous within British society so any kid that had some potential (or even if they didn't) was encouraged with strict lessons, at school and at home. The same was true of the VH brothers. Any that say they were self-taught is usually only half-true. It really just means that they went againt the grain and learned the blues or rock and roll on their own from listening to the records.

    The thing I love about Steve is that he believes in the "less is more" thing. What I mean is that he has written a vast amount of music and fantastic songs, but a great many of those songs don't incorporate "out front" solos. He simply does what is required to create beautiful music. He holds so much back in reserve because we all know that, when required, he can blow down walls with brilliant solos. So humble and reserved...a great guy.

    For the record Eddie Van Halen never said he invented tapping, that was ascribed to him! Eddy's extreme Talent allowed him to incorporate tapping into many of his solos which to me are quite memorable. Bottom line guitarists work with a limited amount of cliches that are played over and over again. What makes a unique guitarist is how these cliches are utilized. Clearly Eddie Van Halen and Steve Hackett were able to creatively use this technique in a way that was truly brilliant.

    Brilliant Steve, keeping the early Genesis fire burning, thank you! As for tapping, yes, Steve obviously predated EVH but was not the first rock player to use the technique; that would have been Harvey Mandel. As for Eddie, you can read in detail how he really connected to tapping in Greg Renoff's fantastic book "Van Halen Rising"; a bit of a spolier, but the EVH tapping lineage is as follows: Harvey Mandel>>to Terry Kilgore via lessons>>Terry Kilgore to EVH>> via woodshedding & hanging out together. It is unlikely that EVH was aware of Steve Hackett's earlier & limited usage of the technique.

    People giving shit to EVH saying that he did not invent tapping when he never claimed to have invented it. He just mastered the technique by himself and used it in a more creative and versatile way. Obviously Steve was doing this technique way before EVH in the same way but I think both guitarists deserve the same appreciation since they found out how to do this technique properly by themselves and without knowing each other. EVH did not know about Steve when he started tapping.

    There is actually a taped note in the solo on All Right Now by Paul Kossoff. i once thought i was the inverter of the first acoustic phaser/flanger (i first used a cornflakes box but modified it to a book) and then i heard an early recording by Django (40's i think) and there on the end of the track was him phasing the sound of his acoustic guitar. Anything we do on guitar has probably been done before, good fun all the same. i was never into Mr Hackett's playing, and sadly time has changed nothing.

    Great Musician ... I think Eddie Van Halen must have learned tapping from Steve Hackett... Van Halen was originally named Genesis ... Genesis played in LA touring in the early 70’s ... I can picture the Van Halen’s going to check out some English band of the same name to see if they were any good and if they needed to change their band name...I think they were blown away and it inspired EVH, but realized they now had to change the band name. .. just a possibility maybe.

      " You invented tapping not van halen"
      It's a very old technique going back at least to the 30's, Vittorio has been doing it since the 50's, Eddie never invented it, Just did it better than anyone else up till that time

    Are there any rock guitar players that were two hand tapping before Steve Hackett? I am curious who was the first rock guitar play to do it. Here are videos of Hackett doing two hand tapping live in 1973. These links start at the point he is two hand tapping. th-cam.com/video/DaY4r_9xIOI/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/-GXQTEtAc1w/w-d-xo.html

    Steve Hackett I have play the guitar, keyboards. etc. You can trill. I am 60 come back to Rochester, NY. The lilac festival. My 33 older daughter. RAYE BLACK can play with your band. I rock on everyday. Look her up on you tube. My name is Charles J. Heberling. My offspring are all musicians. Dancing out like the moonlight night. Sorry.
    However, I am a fan of the slide guitar. I was born on George Harrison's birthday. Me sister was too. February 25th. My favorite is Blood on the Rooftops. Best song. Steve you have the Spanish guitar the best. I am a fan.

    I think Tony banks is the most modest man in the band and ironically the most talented .

      Not so modest in private at work..for a long time he was close to tyrannical in Genesis making tantrums when things where not going is way...he joke's about it himself today...
      He is the main reason behind the departures of Gabriel and Hackett...

    Needs a spot of reverb, it helps the "free standing vibrato" just ask Jeff Beck, get my drift Steve?

    A real musician, sadly now in the 2020s only the legions are capable, seemingly music is in decline were lyrics use profanities and everything is based on a beat machine.

      I sat in the dentists office Thursday for four hours. The whole time they had a modern station and 19 of 20 songs were auto-tune and the same cadence as all of those songs. I was trapped. And the three of them kept saying "didn't they just play that song?". When I finally got free at the end I pointed out how they kept saying that, and that it's because they are all autotune songs and they all sound the same.
