Not the first F1 race I watched, but the first race I watched start to finish! And, being Canadian, Gilles became an instant hero. I already knew that Ferrari was the legendary team that doesn't mess around with half-ass drivers and that only a few drivers were capable of winning races in F1....so when I learned about a Canadian on Ferrari who not only won races, but won the Canadian Grand Prix, that sealed the deal! All these stories about his all or nothing style came later, well I guess this race was an example. I remember where I was 7 months later when my mother told me the news...I was heart broken....
this was the man's snowmobile years coming back to him in a way... Gilles story is just awesome apart from its tragic end... but how in its own way.. it made for, what I thought is still, the most exciting season of f1 in '97. Truly Material for a quality movie i've always thought..
Salut Gilles. 😥 For Gilles there was only one way to drive. To the limit and sometimes beyond. René Arnoux, the one he had their famous battle in Dion, '79, said: (Paraphrasing, not an exact quote.)
Watched this live on TV. Could not believe what I saw. This is why he was one of the best.
That was peak F1. Today he would have been disqualified and fined, or just quit the race.
@@truantraywhich is actually an improvement over a time where still every year or so at least one person lost his life around a Gran prix weekend.

I was there; teeth chattering in the freezing rain watching this incredible display.
Quel merveilleux pilote !

Never give up, that was the motto of Gilles. That's why he made such an impression, why we still talk about him.
INCREDIBILE COSA HA FATTO MOLTI O (TUTTI) SAREBBERO SCESI DALLA MACCHINA
Always good to visit these old videos to remember real F1
Absolutely unique. Sorry Ayrton, Michael and Max, but he was the ultimate rainmaster.
Still going super quick as well!
I was in timing & scoring while that wss going on. I swear i could hear the fans screaming and yelling. Unforgettable.
Looking at the stats, people wonder why Gilles was considered such a talent. But he drove in such a way that the TV cameras would stay with him!
He had truly awful cars from Ferrari.
Miss you Gilles!!!😓💗💯🇨🇦

Tutto poté ❤
don't leave us hanging, did he win?
No, he got 3rd place - podium.
You don't get racing.
Impressive, but definitely should have been black flagged.
70s and 80s were different. This man had big ass nuts. Kudos
