It is a variant on the cave pitch, but with a central pole. First time I saw it with this big tarp (a dd hammocks xl tarp. I recommend it. It was sent to me for free btw) was on the website of these guys:

In this video you see me pitching the tarp. However, please practise this yourself, as it is not easy. A different approach would be to eyeball the position of the six corner stakes and then put the pole up, and reposition the stakes after that.

I literally just bought the exact same 4.5m x 3m DD tarp, and this is the most insane tent build I have seen anyone do with it. I will be studying this video for weeks, just so I can bust this one out on a camp and shock everyone with my awesomeness. (Obviously its YOUR awesomeness... but I can tell them that later after I have basked in the glory of my tipi build.)

We have very hard clay soil. I've gone to carrying a hori hori knife (Japanese digging knife). I use it for a variety of camp chores, one of which is to stab into the hard ground to create an easy path for my stakes. I'll never go back to hammering them in. This works so much better. It allows you to feel if there's rocks and maneuver the path of the hori hori knife around the rocks. I then slide the stake in as I withdraw the knife. Rocking the knife back and forth expands the hole in the ground for using random sticks as stakes. I also use this knife to chop up sticks for use with my backpacking wood stove where it's allowed, as a privy shovel, and to cut thorny vines crossing the trail using a stick as an anvil to strike against.
Good example of practical pitching and a MAGNIFICENT example of how to formulate a video lesson.

Great setup, I tried it last weekend on a 4 day camp out, it was a lot easier to setup than I expected it to be, even on my own the first try took less then 10 minutes.
By changing the order you can set it up very easily by yourself:
Do stakes 1 and 2, then put the pole in place and temporarily tie the middle anker point (the one that goes to point 8 in your picture) to the pole.
Now you can let go of the pole and it will still stand on its own a bit (as long as you hold any corner of the tarp a bit)
Now you can add stakes to all other corners without any problems or 'guessing' where to place the stakes in the ground.
When you added stakes 4-7, release the rope tied to the pole and walk over to stake 2 and tie the rope to it (no need for stake #8)
I also staked all attachments directly to the ground without bungees, making it more of a sweat lodge (very toasty shelter when closed)
Thanks again for a great setup for a tarp I hardly use because of its shape, I will probably use it a lot from now on.

Regarding your last remark: the reason I started doing video’s for this tarp size was that I believe it has great potential, but there was not much attention online. So the fact that you say you will now use it more really fits that idea 😀.

It's amazing that the 3x3 m tarp only fits one person, but the 3x4.5 m tarp holds a whole family or two adults with their bicyles. Great tarp build!!!
Hi Jim, yes that is weird huh. On the other hand, it is possible to pitch a 3*3 for three people, just not with this pitch. Maybe the number pi has something to do with it. 😄

Hi Manuel, the modified A frame and the Holden tent are the same shelter with a square tarp, the arrowhead, V fly, beaked forrester, star tent, all of these will fit three people. Does depend on how tall they are though. Kind regards Papa hiker
Some people say Norm MacDonald is the Comedian's Comedian. I absolutely agree (Norm > all), but in addition, I think Papa Hiker is the Tarp Pitcher's Tarp Pitcher.
Just imagine if you were out in the wilderness with your friends, and trying to pitch a tarp with little to no success, and Papa Hiker happened to walk on by, and gave you a hand. It would be a contrast on the order of trying to do a hard math problem, and having Stephen Hawking come by and help you out with it. Or trying to learn to play blues guitar, and Muddy Waters walked by and showed you a few chords.
I also prefer these rectangular pitches to the square tarp pitches, for some reason.

It's something that would be great in strong winds and heavy rain and incorporates an integrated ground sheet. And only need one pole and one guy line and about 9 pegs. Great video. I'm excited to try this pitch with my lonewolf 902 hot hammock canvas tarp. It's 14.5x14.5 foot square and has a stove Jack. I could use my hammock with bug net as a bivy. Enjoying your channel. Cheers from Canada
Hi dadgad68! That sounds like a big size tarp for this pitch, and also square. I think it is possible, but it would look different. I do a version with the smaller square tarp, you can see it in this video at 1:30.

Oh yeah, I understand that bug netting is dangerous near a wood stove. There won't be any bugs, so why not a tyvek ground sheet.

Hey Fiete! Your tarp would need to have a tie out in just the right place, or you would have to do the wrap a rock technique. Have you tried it yet?

High P. H., my one ( #65 ) works with a slanting tent-stick without any string. really. But it is not necessary to built my setup without a string., only if you have no string. For your Setup without a tent-stick inside, i did not find the real idea yet. But i will try it further. :-) Kindly Fiete

I tryed some variations but nothing was real practical. The problem is getting in and out without tumble the bike...

Yes a few: a frame (although not my favourite) bike goes on one side, entrance on the other. A frame toque tent: bike on low side, enter on high side. Arrowhead: bike goes on left pole position, with the rear wheel inside the shelter, entrance is on the right side (you would need one extra pole), V Fly. I tried this with several pitches and strangely found that using the saddle and not the steering wheel worked best. Kind regards Papa hiker

waiting for huge storm to blow over so I can try this pitch in my back yard.... which makes me wonder, how does it hold up to high winds and rain? What about winder weather, say taking a fmaily of four on ski touring adventure?
Hello Rob, I just found this pitch, and the weather has only been very easy here, so not much experience with it yet. That said... when you take responsibility for a family and you go ski touring, I would rather go for tried and tested methods. So the tarp would be fine if you all have decent bivvy bags. When I camp wild with the whole family plus dog I take our Helsport lavvo 8-10, it is awesome... kind regards papa hiker

I may do a video demonstrating it. now do take care that UL material stretches a lot, so protect it well from your pole, by putting something big and soft between the cloth and the pole.

It's not bending the stake that's the problem. I've seen a stake go through someone's boot. That's a serious injury.

It might. Fold a meter of one edge over and pitch as if it was a 3m x 4m; then undo the "wraping", unfold the excess, pull those "new" corners out to make a roofed entry (which can be collapsed to a door.) Maybe; I can't get my screen to fold properly. Where's some paper?
