Those side flappy panels can even be untied at night and bought together to form a rudimentary door on the front for a little more shelter .. that's what I do with my 3 x 3 dd .. works a treat ❤
If you do yourself a dakota out front you can use the spoil from that to create a little bank underneath the floor at the front, leaf litter around sides just to soak up any draughts that try to sneak under the fly.
Looking forward to trying this one with my 10' oilskin tarp but will probably hitch the front floor section up against the support pole to keep it out of the dew/rain once bedded down for the night. Thanks for sharing
I like the setup, but I would change it a bit. Mostly because of the extended ground sheet. I wouldn’t connect the corner loops with the 2nd loops of the ground part. This way you can pull the middle in towards the pole in bad weather. This combined with a single forward line from the side flaps would give better coverage, less problems with inward rain and no central guy out in the place of a fire.
I've not seen it done this way before. I'm impressed. I've had a 3x3 for years, not sure if it will be big enough. I agree with the comments regarding rainfall on the ground sheet. I would also say that I never walk on the tarp. If there are any sharp stones under it that you haven't noticed it could very easily be punctured.
@@TheBikerDodgewell it all depends on your size. For my 1.9 meters, I need a 3.5x3.5 tarp. It is also essential do tie out the open side first to prevent rain coming in. Biggest problem, atleast for me in freezing weather, is condensation inside. The closed end/sides need to be opened to mitigate this somewhat. Especially since I used my jacket to close the front.
Nice one man! Another one for my collection of tarpology! New to the game and just got my first tarp, these things are amazing, i don't think I'll ever own a tent! Nice work man! 👊❤️
I use an external bipod to free up the interior space. It's not that much more work, however, trekking poles are too short so just have to cut another pole and make both long enough to reach. External tripods and quadripods would do but really aren't necessary. I add a bug net and poncho vestibule. Really good video.
An original set up with a floor, many thanks. It'll stop water running under the walls in heavy rain, especially if you fold up the front portion of the floor and support it with a couple of stakes. Perhaps you could use a taut line hitch on the front guy to make tensioning easier if the tarp stretches after set up. I try to avoid walking on my tarp to try and extend its working life.
I like the pitch, a tent with a floor. Yes, I've "Liked" & "Subscribed" & rang the notification bell. AquaQuest Safari 10'x10' in Woodland Camo is my tarp with a 5,000 Hydrostatic head so I KNOW it will keep me dry. Your DD Tarp has a 3,000 HH & is slightly larger than my tarp. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.
Great idea I wish I had used this last year with a lady friend when using my small with sloped entry to foot box area yet roomy 1 person 2 wall 3 season tent that took time setting up with poles, guy lines, rain fly (that leaked when it rained lol) when it was getting dark! I like the built in floor because now I’m just using my Lanshan Mier rain fly without the bug netting for more room & 1 pole like yours but no floor with mine means a colder inside for me so I’ll try this in a smaller configuration because I’m just solo use & smaller lighter tarp is better I’ve pitched a poncho & clear plastic shower curtain ($ store $1.25) or painters floor cloth $1 cheap as a front door to see out of & hold in the heat plus really no added weight with a ground cloth but wind comes in around the lower to ground clearance areas with that pitch This will be a nice alternative for sure in what a 7’x7’ or 8’x8’ ? If you have a smaller version I’ll check it out…Thanks!
Huge tarp!! Awesome....love the tarp tent setup. Also for the 3x3. Now I need to get me a tarp lol and practise! Cheers from new subscriber from the Netherlands
Just so you know, I did set this up and I'm loving it! It went up in under 5 minutes, very easily! The only thing's I would add are these: 1) No!!!! Clearly this is not a configuration to use if your expecting rain! Come on folks, the front is WIDE OPEN! BACK OFF! It's good config! 2) If you are concerned about possible rain than simply attach a length of paracord to the two front floor tie-down's, lift it up and you should be good. Thank you for sharing this one! I'm loving it! As I said it's great for clear nights where you want to enjoy the stars!
.. Untie cordage to rear pegs ,,Front flaps will meet together and create doors to close off the outside ,, may need to bring support pole to outer edge ..keep all vertical flaps beyond floor tarp..
Or use a shorter pole and put it at the front to have a larger overhang, or keep it in the middle and pull the front down to help close the opening. Many variations of this can be made with some thought.
Well done bloke!🤠⛺️👏👏👏, genuinely different reworking of the 'tarp tent' and addressing it's major flaw- it has no groundsheet. 🇬🇧⛺️🥇🏆😎👍. I'm impressed, subbed, nice one, keep them coming & all the best for the future😊👍.
Just found your channel, great instructional video. I live in a more desert climate in the US and I like the idea of a floor to keep the creepy crawlies off me. 😆
Hi might I suggest you add a small sheet of clear plastic painter drop cloth to your tent large enough to cover the opening. Placing a fire 3 ft or 1 meter away will convert it from an open tarp tent into a super shelter. Obviously a reflector behind the fire would be preferred to focus as much of the fire's heat onto the shelter as possible. The plastic sheet only need to be taller and wider than your opening. The additional weight would be very minimal. Another addition that could help is using a disposable emergency blanket as a rear wall heat reflector. I should add as a caviot that I use a lavvu but have used this method with it down to Temps from 32-17 degrees Fahrenheit. That the coldest it gets in my area on extremely rare occasions maybe once in a decade or longer. I slept through most of the night only waking twice to feed the fire.
I thought I'd seen em all then this guy shows up. Brill buddy going to try this next time I'm out. As said below may need tweaking. I've just bought my 1st 4x4 tarp. Tried the pyramid tent config with it....Think I may need longer trekking poles.
Why would you use the groundsheet to collect water and/or dew etc and direct it into your gear inside your shelter? Have you actually slept in this shelter overnight in the rain? I have. Bring your groundsheet back into the tent and close the front portion up, keeping the weather outside.
Really good explanation! I love to hear the size of the tarp. Does it have five grommets per side? It seems like it seems like it would collect a lot of water on the floor unless the rain was being driven away from the front door. I love to watch another video where these issues are addressed
... If storm in the forecast ,, trench the perimeters , about 6"x6" ,, back and sides at the location where the tarp meets the ground ,,direct front trenches away from tarp entry ,..run off will stay out of the tarp interior ..
Hello.. Nice video. Tarp is the easy way, and tent has some more advantages... I want to buy a tent for 1 person but i hate to need time to setup it (sometimes). Some tents are fast setup for 1 person but are very small so you cant put your equipment inside. So to buy a strong tarp is a nice idea. What about the mosquitos at night? how can make a net at the door?
Shelters are quick and simple to build when you have a tarp with you. So often we see people building shelters, with stones and logs, or digging extravagant under ground hobbit type dwellings, when all they really need is a tarp! I bought a DD tarp many years ago, and use it occasionally for a quick bit of shelter during summer months. It’s been great. I have a 3 season lightweight tent which serves for everything else, what’s all this nonsense we see, with people digging and chopping and building? Have they nothing better to do? Thanks for the vid. B
.. very reliable ,,, if spending the evening indulging ,, maybe a better choice would be an " A " frame with NO support pole .. just don't hang yourself in the guy lines ...
I love how whenever they knock a peg into the ground on TH-cam, they never hit any rocks or stones. If it was me doing it, the dialogue would be very different - "Pull this bit in and peg it down here. Bloody hell, why is it that wherever I put a flaming peg, there's rocks? Damn things. God, I hate nature! Let me try over here...I don't **$$ believe it - another $$** rock!! Oh sod it, I'm just going to put rocks on the corners instead. It'll work if there's no breeze" etc etc Seriously though - great video mate. I'll try that set up
I recently saw basically the same tarp tent. However the other one had no floor. So well done with yours. I'm embarrassed to ask but what the hell, how big is the tarp you used, I couldn't make out what you said.
You would get soaked in this setup as the ground sheet would catch the falling rain from the sides and front making puddles as the ground sheet is to big
Yeah sorry about that, I know there's audio issues. Everything is filmed & edited on my phone. When I can justify the cost I'm going to invest in some actual equipment. Sorry for the inconvenience ✌🌳

Those side flappy panels can even be untied at night and bought together to form a rudimentary door on the front for a little more shelter .. that's what I do with my 3 x 3 dd .. works a treat ❤
The floor will collect rain or condensation as it sticks out past cover. I'd pull the floor back and stake it separately under cover.
Another variation , yes !
If you do yourself a dakota out front you can use the spoil from that to create a little bank underneath the floor at the front, leaf litter around sides just to soak up any draughts that try to sneak under the fly.
Hook a poncho hood over the top of your pole and stake it out front to create a door flap.
or use buttons to fix to floor corner loops to side walls and exclude some draft.
I would pull the side flaps outwards and peg them down.
I will try this figuration out with my 4*4m tarp.
Looking forward to trying this one with my 10' oilskin tarp but will probably hitch the front floor section up against the support pole to keep it out of the dew/rain once bedded down for the night. Thanks for sharing

I've not seen it done this way before. I'm impressed. I've had a 3x3 for years, not sure if it will be big enough. I agree with the comments regarding rainfall on the ground sheet. Is there a good way to combine this with a hammock, for ground use? I need a way to use my hammock in camping grounds where there are no trees.

Make the door out of mosquito netting.
