      Paul, a guy called pupa hiker done a great video of this a few years back check out his video. He also drew it out on paper which made it really clear to see the pegging configuration. Great video as always, and good to "show" us what happens if you open the end facing the wind 😆

    Nothing better than a cup of coffee on a lazy Sunday morning in sunny Northern California while watching a new Messner vid.

    Open up one side like at 16:20 then add a second Lanshan-Tarp from the other side, with both open ends overlapping and you'd have a mini-tarp cabin.

    There are a zillion videos on TH-cam showcasing the same three or four tarp tent configurations.
    This one, however, is a rarity to my knowledge. Nice one! Thank you for the education! ☺️

    I carry a cheap 2x1.5 tarp. Is small enough to fit in my pocket and is just enough to keep the wind, sun, rain off of me while I have some lunch. I pitch it over my tent to give a bit more shelter from the rain and in better weather use it as a groundsheet. It's been quite good value considering how much use I've got from it over past few years

    Paul
    Excellent!
    I am constantly using my 3x3 to set up a temporary shelter for watercolor painting in wet or damp conditions
    I really like the last setup with the open front
    My easel will be protected from rain and wind
    Thanks!

    I think everyone should carry a Tarp, just in case of emergency. Plus it can be used to extend your dry area if the weather is bad and you're using a small 1 man tent

      Even on a day hike? My thinking lately is that my new pack-covering poncho would suffice, meaning my tarp would be overkill. Any advice? Opinions?
      I was in fact at least partially inspired by Paul himself in one of his recent videos.

    • @jeremyoconnor169

      @@NeilEvans-xq8ik I carry a Fjällräven poncho and a few ties and pegs. The poncho stops any weight of rain dead and makes a nice little shelter for a brew stop.

      @@NeilEvans-xq8ikit's all about the tie outs, they are limited on a poncho. But if all u need is a simple A-frame or semi-pyramid, a poncho will do. But if u love messing about with different configurations, depending on the weather or site constrictions, you'll have fun with a tarp. Some tarps have inner tie outs for hanging a bug bivy etc

    I just finished a video today doing something similar with a 3x3 tarp. fully enclosed is the way to go, I am into bike packing now I retired and traveling light just with a tarp and two poles is so refreshing and minimal. I use the Swedish army meth's stove, so easy and clean.

    I love tarps! They're so versatile. Perhaps not the best for summit camping in strong winds, but most conditions they won't let you down if you've done your practise of various setups.

  • @pamelaklemp5615
    @pamelaklemp5615 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Great tarp tent video! My son swears by using a tarp. My RECON MARINES son SHOWED ME A TIP that's useful when tarp style camping. Take with you four extra pegs and paracord plus a second ground tarp. In your living area inside peg each corner and lay your sevond ground tarp putting the paracord through the tarp holes. Pull the strings up so that the edges make an inside basement in your living area. It will be as deep as the pegs are exposed halfway. Great when rain comes to keep you much drier from ground runoff. Be sure to peg your pegs away from the sides to reduce top area runoff and moisture from condensation and allowing for airflow. Worth the extra weight when conditions get windy and stormy bad.

  • @stephanchapman5411
    @stephanchapman5411 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    For your outside peg to close your flap tighter once inside, use an eye peg, a barbecue skewer and thread it through with a longer length and then peg inside with another one. Job done! 😮😊

    I love my ultralight 3x3. It's so versatile, there's 3 'main' configurations I use: the ol' bivvi bag hideaway, a basic lean-to, and one similar to this when you opened the end out. 2 trekking poles and a tarp with guys and you're set for the night.

  • @DIY-DaddyO

    I threw a DD tarp over my single skin S15 lightwave in anticipation of a thunderstorm in the evening and by god did it pour down for three solid hours of some of the heaviest rain you can imagine. It did the job of keeping it out but it still wetted out the tarp which then proceeded to wet out the tent skin because it was in direct contact with it. So I still ended up with a soaking wet tent to pack up in the morning.

    I've used those solid fuel blocks before and also reckon they have a ~10 minute burn. Which I find is enough to do one thing, but if you're looking to have a coffee and a hot meal, or a hot meal with two separate components, you'd need more than one block and that starts to get a bit expensive. I've not looked at cutting them in half to get a ~5 minute burn (probably enough for just a coffee), as I'd be wary of having something that flammable just loose. At least the packaging offers some protection. I also got a stove for these blocks which weighs very little and you can fit exactly one block in it quite nicely.

    For the door flap, could you just roll it up towards the middle, on either outside or inside, and secure it with a couple of ordinary binder clips? (Thick clips for holding stacks of paper.) Might want to get coated ones, to make sure they don’t rust on your expensive tarp.

    I carry a bivi bag for emergencies(and use it as a groundasheet/sitmat when not! But the weight (and cost) saving over a real Lanshan is pretty minimal (if anything!) and it's a lot easier to just pitch the real thing. All that faffing about would drive me insane. Fun to watch though.

    Very good enjoyed watching this , just wondering how the cost and wieght difference compares to buying a lanshan 2 tent , and maybe just using the fly on its own

    Thanks for the video.
    There is one question: in the first version I saw a problem with ventilation. Air comes only from below and it can be very little.
    If the part near the stick that you attached on the outside (then the inside), pull it out and make a visor (vent), and/or do the same on the other side?
    Sorry for my bad English - I'm writing through a translator.
