Thunder Run Review, Kentucky Kingdom Wooden Coaster | Best Coaster by Dinn?

- Thunder Run is the oldest coaster still operating at Kentucky Kingdom. This wood coaster was designed by Curtis D. Summers and built by the Dinn Corporation. The ride has received extensive trackwork in recent years, so it runs much smoother than other Dinns. This ride has some solid airtime hills and the layout inspired the Hurler clones at Kings Dominion and Carowinds.

All I can think of is T3. For a Dinn Coaster not to be the most painful coaster at a park, that's just incredible. R.I.P. T3

Thunder Run 400: It's literally a NASCAR track but as a wooden coaster

No one would say this is anything amazing or that it's anywhere near as good as the park's top two. But I think this is still some good fun. Its kind of emblematic of the park in that it doesn't look great, it's kind of weird and isn't especially impressive but has a few fun features.
It's a fine supporting coaster.
Honestly this ride could do with a re profile, those large sections of straight track could be glorious airtime hills.
That said I marginally prefer this to Kentucky Flier, what airtime it does have is so powerful it makes up for the lack of quantity.
I prefer Kentucky Flyer since it's more action-packed.
For me this is like the most average rollercoaster in existence. Like you said, great sense of speed, not much else, smoothness is pretty good or at least passable. Good thing rollercoasters are awesome so the most average rollercoaster is still a lot of fun
The outward leg has good airtime at least.
I agree that it's a front row ride. But in my experience, Wolverine Wildcat is easily the smoothest of the 4 Dinns I've ridden, and it's by far my favorite for the great airtime throughout the layout. Last summer, it was riding like a dream, except for the finale, which suddenly becomes a little bouncy, and the airtime was much weaker there. Hopefully, that section will get fixed too. I relate Thunder Run to Timber Wolf. Both are far better in the front for smoothness and airtime, but they both have dead sections too. They're about equal for me. I need to get back on Predator. I haven't ridden it since 2019, which was decent.
Wildcat didn't have the Titan Track when I rode it, but I could see that one being smoother now with that addition.

It’s literally the exact same layout but flipped. I have no idea why they even bothered with this ride

This is my personal roughest coaster for some reason, everyone says it’s not that bad but I’ve been on coasters that have way worse reputations and nothing was as painful as this 😭

I legit thought this was rougher than T3 in the same park, which was considered one of the roughest coasters in the world, and I legitimately enjoyed T3 without pain

Funny how it’s all left turns. The total opposite of Twisted Timbers yet very similar in layout with their original forms.

I actually really enjoyed this in my only visit to Kentucky Kingdom. I thought the airtime hit hard, and while a little bumpy, it didn't bother me at all.
I find it tolerable and the outward leg delivers.
I rode this one time in the very back row in 2022 and it was a near zen ride.. so rough, it made t3 feel smooth.
Ouch! Never got a ride that rough when I last rode it in 2021.
My 2022 rides on Thunder Run were by far rougher than my 2019, 2020, & 2023 rides. T3 was riding quite smooth for me in 2022.
I have heard that deen coasters were fun when they were new. They became boring when the parks modified them. Mean streak use to habe airtime as you flew over the turn arrounds. Then cedar fair reprofiled it and added trims at the beginning took all the forces out of it.
Dinns got rough, which is why parks had to slow them down.
I road it and I enjoyed it!

I enjoyed this ride the first ride. I like the lateral airtime hill that gave me ejector and laterals. The second ride I had was pretty rough though. It might've been because I could've been on a wheel seat
Wheel seats can get quite bumpy on the turns.

Why did you hear about the ride's smoothness or roughness in its opening year in 1990 and over the years?
I heard it was its roughest during the Six Flags years.

This is the first time I made a Thunder Run review.
While I don't hate it, knowing how good Twisted Timbers is and how much I like CCI coasters I would've preferred them to RMC this and keep Twisted Twins as a dueling CCI. I feel bad saying that knowing that it was designed by John Fetterman of Knobles fame (also designed Flying Turns, modified Mr Twister to fit in that plot) and I love the preservation work he and the Knobles family have done but it's my least favourite of the 3 coasters he designed, and it doesn't have the charm of Twister or Flying Turns. And unlike those rides, the art has been engineered out of Thunder Run, to use his termonology based on the reprofile stories.
That's a good point it would have been better to keep Twisted Twins over this.

It's not painful and has some fun airtime.
This is literally the mirror image of Hurler at Carowinds. So if you like right turns, don’t go on this coaster cuz there aren’t any
