Nice. Would like to see some strength test videos for various sizes and types of carbon fibre tubes.

Well you are in luck :-). Kind of... Here we compare carbon fiber to other materials all together. A side by side comparison of standard, intermediate and high modulus tubes PLUS roll wrapped vs filament wound would indeed make for a good video! th-cam.com/video/S6niIa1wCQg/w-d-xo.html

Hi, thank you for this informative video ! Considering you experience with carbon fiber, I would like to submit an inquiry. I am building a folding bikes with carbon fiber tubes and steel lugs. The torsional stiffness of the Roll Wrapped tube is disapointing. I your opinion, how much better would a Pull Winded or Braided tube would perform in torsion compared to a Roll Wrapped ? Regards

Questions here, rather than a comment - I have seen small tubes used as extendable poles for microphone booms (film shoot) but was wondering about a tall version (5-6m) to stand vertically as an antenna mast (taking it around in a caravan, hence need to collapse it and have weight-saving). How can I calculate the required thickness? I'm assuming roll-wrapped would be the ideal material, as no torque is involved.

Telescoping systems are tricky because each tube has to fit into the next tube and so on. To make it more simple, the tubes will generally have the same wall thickness. Our INFINITube series will give you a better idea of what it takes to telescope. Telescoping antennas are widely used, but you will find that they can be very flexible at the lengths you are looking for. Most people will use guy wires to help with stability. www.rockwestcomposites.com/shop/round-tubing/infinitube-round-telescoping-tubing/infinitube-v

Would it be possible to make a square tube?

Would filament would be a good choice to build chasi stiffening applications like frame braces or would the best performance come from roll wrapped twill weave

Both versions can be used, but each has their own strengths. Cosmetically, roll wrapped are better, and can be stiffer, but roll wrapped has length restrictions and diameter constraints. Filament wound has more continuous fibers that are more co-mingled than roll wrapped, so can be much better in ultimate failure without delamination between plies. But, with filament wound, we don't typically wind any less than 15°, so in practice it's slightly less stiff than a similarly sized tube that has 0° fibers in the laminate.

Could I roll wrap an aluminum cylinder for a compressed air tank? 200 psi max. How many layers of what thickness carbon fiber would I use and how do I cover the domed ends?
    Thanks,
    Paul

Typically, pressure vessels like you are describing are manufactured using the filament winding technique. This increases the internal burst strength of the aluminum liner and reinforces the domes. We do not recommend playing around with potentially dangerous situations without the proper engineering design and manufacturing techniques.

Wound tubes would be great to make a submarine out of!

Who uses inches in a video about technical manufacturing processes? strange.

There are two kinds of countries: Those that use metric, and those that have put men on the Moon.
