    Do you think sponsorships and paid reviews cause issues? Does it make someone less trustworthy?

    • @TomReinerDE
      @TomReinerDE 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      To be honest: Most content creators on YT do not qualify as journalists. Journalism has (or used to have) a number of standards to which the editorial department *has* to adhere. That requires the economical independence of advertising customers (so that the journalists can criticize companies without endangering the existence of their outlet). As a content creator - the moment you start having your channel as the main income source, you become vulnerable. That is just a fact. And you will always act accordingly. That does not mean, that you only say nice things about products (which would harm your channel in the end, because your dependence would become too obvious). But there will always be a pair of scissors in your head. That is just how it is.
      Now, having said that: Certain areas of journalism have *always* been problematic. And automotive journalism has always been on top of that list. Why? Because you have a closed environment of the same companies that provide your products for reviews being your main source of income as they are your main advertising customers. So, paying for flights to sunny locations, paying for nice hotels and paying for food and drinks has always been a problem here. When I went into journalism (which is more than 30 years ago now) that has already been the case for decades. You have mentioned guitars, where the situation is similar. You could add watches. High end hifi. Golf equipment. And so on.
      Now, the main point: Does that cause issues? No. Not at all. Watching several channels over a certain amount of time and getting to know the content creators and their personal preferences gives you a much better overview than you could ever have it ten years ago. I can watch reviews on five or ten different channels (in my case in german and english) and after that I do get a pretty good impression of the product - so that I am armed with information and opinion, before I do my test ride at the dealership. Ten years ago I would have relied on one or two "journalists" of some magazines whose personal taste and preferences I might not have known. Plus: I had to pay for their subjectivity. So: No, it does not make you less trustworthy. I just must not expect eternal universal truths from some guy in a leather jacket on a rented motorcycle. ;-)

    Awesome points. This is all why I don't do sponsored videos, but lean heavily on affiliate programs which allow me to stay objective and unbiased as possible. With motorcycle guys, I have learned to ignore most of what they have to say. I get the specs and thats it. Anything else is just entertainment. For example, How many times have we heard Spite say about a bike- " It just needs a little/more power" Well Spite weighs close to 250lbs and is 6ft2 or taller. So how that bike responds to him will be very different than to me weighing 170lbs and *5ft9. This is true for Chaseontwowheels etc. Opinions are all but pointless. Then there is Spite Hating on Indian because he could not get a loan from them for a bike, Then there is Vloggers trying to tell me "Who" a bike is for, as if I'm not in that demographic then I shouldn't get it etc. I could do a 30 minute rant on this, this type of stuff is the same for reviewing anything, a motorcycle, car, firearm, electronic device, etc.

    Great points and good you brought it up. Making a mistake and correcting it is very different to telling an outright lie! Back in the day I worked for a UK motorcycle magazine from its launch in 1991 (Fast Bikes). We were given test bikes and product to review, that was the norm even thirty years ago. If we got a bike and we thought it sucked, we would say so. This would cost us future test bikes and we’d have to source from a dealership or elsewhere. We were never paid to say nice things and we never got any bikes to keep! Product like helmets and gear sometimes we got to keep. Keep doing what you’re doing and keep it real, it’s appreciated by everyone, especially as it can lead to people dropping large sums of cash on a new toy. One thing I think many reviewers lose sight of is that they are trading their credibility (or harming it) in exchange for a free product or cash or views or whatever. Often that exchange appears to benefit the youtube personality more than the manufacturer but that may not the case. That review lives in perpituity and continues to lend credibility to a product long term or, yes, even harming the reviewer long term. Long term integrity is extremely hard to build but extremely easy to lose and so many forget that but it sounds like you have not.

When the station is funded by the people , like 3RRR and 3PBS here in Australia, the DJ’s can play what they want, and say what they want!

I just bought a MG V85TT and it was after looking at just about every single video of it on TH-cam from the initial first ride reviews all the way to 10000+ mile reviews. I knew the controls were quirky, the rear brake actually slowing is a hope/wish, and the throttle response is wonky off idle due to too lean mapping. The example that sticks out most to me in the motorcycle community here on TH-cam was the Ruroc Atlas helmet and the reviews that went with it. For each release, dozens of huge channels were praising the helmet, and despite there being many reviews from independent, smaller channels showing how flawed the helmet was, the big channels essentially never touched on it. As it happened, all of these channels were either provided the Ruroc gear for free, or were in some way compensated for their review. The most blatant example of this was C2W wearing a Ruroc hat in his Atlas review, while explaining how the free gear and free helmets couldn't be affecting his review. What he didn't understand was how, even if that was true, the optics of the thing could destroy the faith of his audience in his objectivity.

  • @JamesBiggar
    @JamesBiggar 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Yes, almost all product reviews are paid sponsorships. I do loads of reviews, but I'm not going to pretend like I do them for nothing. I do them to generate revenue for custom builds. It's an exchange of services, so if the product or service their "shilling" is no good, then the creator who traded their time reviewing/promoting it is out that time. Nothing is free in this world, especially your time and reputation. No one likes working for nothing and losing everything. I know I don't. I gave the agent that I work with a particularly hard time in the beginning when she offered a product for review, and she hasn't let me down because she knows I'll walk if my reputation is damaged over junk. She values my time as much as I value good tools and gear.
    I think whether or not a creator's channel actually requires outside help from sponsors depends a lot on what type of content a creator produces and how much help they can get from their audience. Commentary, reaction, poo posting, etc don't come with a whole lot of, if any overhead costs. Reacting to someone racing a bike just takes a bloke and a camera. Being the pro on the bike or the bloke who builds and maintains it takes a lot more funding to market oneself and win races. The overhead is a lot more, more than the avg bloke can afford on their own. Empires aren't built overnight. They need sponsors, and fans are willing to support that. It all boils down to how you approach it, I guess. Not everyone's going to like it. But if you don't pretend like it's something it's not and make it clear that some level of sponsorship or product placement is required to do what fans expect, then most are going to be cool with it. It is a job after a certain point. We're all taxed accordingly, and we live in a world where it's incredibly difficult to compete in any business without marketing. That's just the way it is. Both producers and consumers created this reality. Honest review or not, just because one of your fav creators has a good experience with something, that doesn't mean everyone will. Consistency matters. I follow review channels to stay up to date with the latest tools and equipment, but I also follow people who use said tools and equipment regularly to see what sort of issues they've had. It's cliche to say at this point, but it remains relevant - no matter what you see in a video, it always pays to do your own research.

    Damn, it would be nice if manufacturers/distributors paid for reviews. Especially $2500! That would make doing this a lot more financially viable. Thankfully I think a lot of us still do this because we’re passionate about motorcycles, not because we are complete dicks with a massive ego.
    Also remember, even magazine reviews are paid for by advertisers who are often the very same manufacturers they are reviewing products from.
    Always take a review with a grain of salt and always try a bike before you buy it.

To your point though, there are shills in every youtube community, so I take reviews with a grain of salt... and sometimes I actually want to hear an over exited shill give rave reviews about a product that I'm about to buy, just to make me feel better about my own poor financial decisions... and that's not on them, that's on me, just talking myself into what I'm already going to do, by giving myself another excuse, if you can call it that, to make yet another poor financial decision...... oh, but I have so much fun doing it .....

    One creator that stands out to me is doodleonamotorcycle. Don't get me wrong, she is a great person and very genuine, but ever since she discovered corporate sponsorships and endorsement her content went from very down to earth stuff to every video being endorsed or collaborative with some company, big or small. The content just feels completely business driven now, it's a shame. I feel like she would never make a video now that doesn't add directly to her channel's 'growth' - i.e. money.
    Really it's TH-cam that is to blame. It used to be enough to just make content, but now youtube's monetization is so lacklustre that this kind of stuff is vital to be able to make content full time. It's a real shame though.

    Besides the issues/concerns already mentioned, another aspect the bothers me is that paid reviews insult your intelligence. Reviewers present it as if they've used that product for years and just decided to endorse it out of the goodness of their heart. Nevermind that in the X amount of time their channel has existed it has never been mentioned or seen before. I understand they need to make money, but I put nothing into those type of reviews and just use the videos to see the product in action.

  • @theobviouschicken

    I watch urban hipsters who just started riding turn into adv gurus overnight, telling people what camping gear they need and how to go off-road adv riding and camping. What a joke! These people would struggle in a 5 star hotel. But because they have a big following of newbies, they somehow have credibility as well as sponsorship etc.
    They all sell their souls for a free product and make out they're an expert, when they are nothing more than a snake oil salesman!

    Hey man, just stumbled upon your channel and wanted to comment on this video and the points you mention. Unfortunately, I don't think my channel is large enough yet to get opportunities like you have. I wish, but it doesn't happen. I don't know what manufacturers require, but I've reviewed other bikes simply by going to demo events, which is one way to do it, but they don't give you much time to really understand the bike so it's challenging. I'd love to have a dealer or company reach out even if it wasn't paid, just for the opportunities. Everything I own I've purchased so maybe one day. How large was your channel (subs) when you started to get inquiries?

    Now, Why do you shit on versys 650 all the time, i recently bought one(against yours and YN advice) and am happy with it.
    You Guys need to think about availability (I'm from india) and maintenance as well and road conditions, not every country has superbike availability like USA and maintenance setup from manufacturer and good quality road network.
    I would've loved a ktm 790ADV over versys 650, but it's not available in india.
    I use mine for long distance touring, like 1000-3000 miles rides, versys handles that with great ease.
    P.s. I'm not a dentist or a dad(typically what you say about v650 buyers) 😂

    I never let a single internet review determine what I buy. And I will calmly and respectfully walk up to any owner on the street, and ask them what they think about what they own. The responses on the street I get, have been 100% respectful back, and stunningly honest, and in some cases, funny as hell. A owner who has been fighting a complete POS car or bike, will warn you to never - ever buy one. That is the key last question I always ask - would you buy another one. A massive thank you from me to everyone I've talked to on the street over the decades. You have saved me tens of thousands of dollars and years of headache.

    I don't mind creators doing paid content so long as they are clear that it is paid/sponsored content. Having "links in the description" of videos that have affiliate links to vendors seems fairly harmless in terms of my viewing experience. I don't mind in video creator made ads as long as they keep them brief and to the point. Ads are ads. I don't like them. I tolerate them from some creators that I value their opinions even when I might disagree or not care much about the advertised product. They have earned my trust enough for them to tell me about a product and not to just skip past it or stop watching all together. If I were a creator I would also accept sponsors who I actually like/use/value the product or service. If I actually use it and value it, then I feel comfortable telling you I use it and value it. But I agree about the right to offer constructive criticisms about issues you had with a product seems pretty important to me. Constructive being the key word there.

    I understand how important those revenue streams are. I want to support creators I like so I pay for YT Premium and I whitelist websites in my adblocker that I feel like I can trust and aren't intrusive. I really like when creators have something burned in the video showing it's an ad. Donut Media has a progress bar for the ad. Tom Scott has a card in one of the corners saying it's an ad until it's over. There's a lot of interesting products out there. If the product is worth a damn, then it can handle an honest review with some criticisms. Showing how a product has flaws will do more for me than trying to frame a product as perfect.

    In the harsh light of day, nobody should be wearing rose-coloured glasses regarding this platform. Personal integrity really isn't important, especially anywhere within reach of anything to do with advertising. It's important for the creator to make money (as long as it's not illegal or downright immoral). That should be their number 1 priority, so it's vital to produce great content. Advertise whatever product comes with a paycheck and is of course relevant to, in the case of this channel, motorcycles. Just learn to fake sincerity convincingly and you'll make a good living. Don't cut off your nose to spite your face, pun intended!

    To me there are some creators that I trust with paid reviews and some that I don't. Especially if they only send out the product I think they are more like "hey please test this product for us we want to have your opinion online and you don't have to spent money to test this for your audience". And the review gets way more believable if 1.: the language is natural and normal for the creator 2.: the creator has some criticism, even the most minor stuff helps, like "that's nice, but I'd like to have this or that on the product too".

    A manufacturer should always be prepared for honest constructive criticism as it will help them to improve the product and therefore sell more units. Isn't that the reason they give or lend their products to reviewers ? It shouldn't make any difference if it is a sponsored or paid review as long as it is honest.
