Underwater videography in cold water can be a challenging skill to master as conditions aren’t always ideal. However, for divers who master proper buoyancy, acquire proper training & experience, it is now much more affordable than just a few years ago. With a GoPro and decent video lights, it’s a rewarding way to show what lies beneath their sea to non-diving friends and family as well as to create awareness for more protection for sensitive marine habitats.
BC’s nutrient rich waters are famous for their abundance and diversity of colourful creatures great & small, that thrive due to the sheer quantity of food available.
Water clarity and colour varies throughout the year, and especially during periods of fresh water run off and plankton blooms especially during warmer months. Areas of swift currents & diverse underwater terrain comprised of deep walls to roving canyon like reefs that can stretch for kilometres and are just part of what makes diving here so special. Howe Sound itself is triangular in shape and is the world’s most southerly locates fjord.
The combination of these many unique properties and water qualities also make Howe Sound home to the only diver accessible Glass Sponge reefs and Bioherms in the world.
