    I have a cat who is a FIP survivor thanks to FIP Warriors. In 19 days it will be her 2 year Cured anniversary! This was back when the only way to get compounded GS was from the black/grey market in China. The truth is I am SO grateful to the people in the FIP community who supported me through the treatment. My girl needed an extra 30 days since her bloodwork wasn't quite right on day 82. The 82 days of observation and monthly bloodwork to make sure the virus was really gone after we stopped the medication were nerve-wracking. I hope that, now that the drug is available through vets, there will still be a good support community for the cat owners.

    Omfg I'm so happy to hear this that I could cry. I've been in rescue for a decade now, and I'll never forget the year where we lost literally dozens and dozens of kittens to FIP. I've seen it so many times that even the utterance of it breaks my heart.

    I lost a young cat to FIP, and it was just heartbreaking. I’m so glad that other cats can be saved. I hope that someday you will be able to do a video on Rapamycin for cats with HCM.

    I've been working with FIP patients who are using GS-441524 for a few years now. I'm a tech who does mobile phlebotomy (Affordable Pet Labs) and it's been amazing to see the transformation in just a matter of days with this tx. So glad it's available for DVMs.

    I am so happy to hear this. I lost my Winky more than 20 years ago to FIP and it was devastating. It was 100% fatal at that time so all we could do was ease his symptoms and love him for those 6 weeks before it became too much for him.

    This is amazing!!! 🎉🎉🎉. I lost my Buster to FIP in 2009. He was about 2 years old and lived for 3 months after he was diagnosed. I would have gone to any lengths to get this medicine for him! So thankful for all the cats who will be saved!

    I had lost 3 kittens & 1 adult cat to FIP years ago. Our vet had done extensive research with TA&M University to figure out how we could lose so many cats. Turns out our old Maine Coon Cat was probably a Coronavirus Shedder. When he was stressed, he would “shed the virus in his urine & feces”. The other cats would use the same little box & the only way a cat can wash its paws after using the litter box is by licking them. That how we lost so many.

    So now I'm curious about why it causes bladder stones! I only had basic biochem classes, but I remember the Krebs cycle... and how much it annoyed me that NAD+ and NADP+ were both involved in different steps and it was easy to confuse them!

    • @kellybraun7048
      @kellybraun7048 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’m curious too, now. 😂 Anyone know (or have a hypothesis) why the bladder stones are a common side effect?
      I’m immediately jumping to cat hydration problems, like if the medication causes dehydration, which in turn puts strain on the bladder? Or there’s a problem removing the virus+GS combo from the body? I’m probably way off base.

      disclaimer i am not a vet i just have lots of experience with this cat issue. cats can normally get crystals and especially do if they eat dry food its from the phosphorus (ash) and some of the other vitamins that build up if they dont drink a lot or even if they do. both male and female can get them, but they can be more dangerous and have a higher chance to block them if they are a FIXED MALE (urethra is skinnier). i use a medicine from chewy called "break it up" for cats (they also have dog). ive had 4 cats have crystals (yes one was an fip survivor i used gs med 2years ago), and it worked for them(2 months ago). they dont even need the urinary food except for one because he had both types of crystals (not the fip survivor). the medicine works to dissolve one (the most common one "struvite" but not the other) i would do a 3 week dose of it if needed. i do that for 3 weeks every 3 months or 6 months. stress can make them worse and produce more. so if you want to play it safe 3months for stress and 6 for not stressed, still keep an eye on them might need it every 3 even if not stressed for a little longer than 3 weeks.

      @@kellybraun7048 phosphorus magnesium calcium and a few other vitamins can build in the bladder and cause crystals and stones, they need them all but you can always get to much of a good thing and turn it into a bad thing in the high quantity. the medicine might have vitamins in it or promote the retention of them from the food or water they drink. never feed cat sink water. fill a bottle and leave set for 24 hours make it safer or even put it through a water filter after leaving it set to make it cleaner. also do that for yourself too. i use a Brita filter personally

    One of our foster kittens might start treatment for this.
    Out vet isn't 100% sure what she is experiencing. But most her symptoms are pointing to FIP, but it doesn't show in bloodwork.
    They start the treatment today.

  • @burf90

    It's really cool that FIP can be cured now. Now if only they could devise a simple blood test that detects FIP - not just feline coronaviruses - in the very early stages so that treatment could be used immediately.

    • @farris4521
      @farris4521 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      they have two different versions of blood panels. regular and a full blood panel.

    • @burf90
      @burf90 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@farris4521 Does the full panel say "yes, this is absolutely FIP, and there's not even a chance it's any other coronavirus"? That's what I want. Over the years virtually every cat I've owned has tested positive for coronavirus and not one ever developed FIP, but I'm tired of getting that scare every time they do bloodwork.

    So why has this been illegal for so long in the U. S. (other than we always seem to lag behind other countries) and why is it still illegal in some states?

    • @jesskay4860
      @jesskay4860 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The FDA requires a certain type of testing to approve a drug.
      My understanding is that they were at that testing stage when Covid-19 hit. And they pulled off to focus on human needs.

      @@jesskay4860 I think this is what Gilead Sciences, the pharmaceutical company that owns the patent to GS-441524, would like people to believe. The reality is it was their choice to not pressure getting the drug approved for use in animals and instead focus on the related drug, Remdesiver. Even after the COVID-19 crisis had passed they chose not to pursue FDA approval because they didn't determine it to be a profitable enough product. Hence Dr. B's reference to "Merica" being the reason. The drug is still not approved by the FDA, since Gilead won't pay for the testing required for that process, but the FDA has stated it won't enforce regulations against compounding pharmacies creating medication for prescriptions written by veterinarians for specific cats diagnosed with FIP.
      So, Gilead Science, the pharmaceutical company, is the bad guy. Is anyone surprised?

    1100-1650 to treat cat? yall are lucky. 2 years ago i had to spend 3500-4000 on the meds, plus 1800 at vet for emergency scans, draining fluid, eye meds, and rechecks. (ocular fip.) plus i was at risk of our lovely gov of just taking it and destroying it. for yall itll probably be 2000 or max 2500 total over the 3 months. its recommended 3 months. its shots at first then you can go to a pill.
