totally agree on the weather sealing! I had the same problem with dust on the sensor

    #1. Check!
#2. Sort of check - IC sensor cleaning is a good proxy to what WR would have accomplished.
But for me, the ISIS and the re-addition of hybrid AF with phase-detect, in a body the size of the early CCD models... amongst other new niceties....
    That's gold.

Completely agree with you. You know what even if they don't upgrade the sensor.. Just weather sealing. I'd still buy it.

100% agree with you. Thanks for the clever letter to Ricoh

no flash is a deal breaker for me. Honestly all it really needed was a 24mp sensor and a better AF.

    +1 for weather sealing!

    great video and recommendations.
Also, please allow us to customize the 4 buttons around the d-pad PLUS allow us to use a standard micro usb for charging (not the proprietary one)

That USB thing never did sit right with me. Maybe not a blatant cash grab like Apple's lightning cable seemed - but still annoying. That said I was able to grab a set of Wasabi brand batteries that came with a charger for under $30 on Amazon. I'm sure I still have that stupid unused cable in a drawer somwhere.

Good recommendations, although I've never had any noticeable problems with weather sealing.

GR III was just announced! Thoughts?

Just give me a built-in viewfinder and some semblance of quiet, usable 1080p video, and I’d be happy as a clam. And if you threw in 24-70 zoom range, that would be icing on the cake!

While I agree with the video sentiment, unfortunately Pentax/Ricoh aren’t known for good looking video. The zoom would be interesting as well but I imagine it’d add thickness and a new button to control it and they’d probably make it a variable aperture just to keep size down making the long end a little less usable. Hopefully we’ll see what they’ve decided to do in about a week!

Improved autofocus in low light would be nice ! A built in optical viewfinder would be cool, just get rid of the flash to make some room.

I can get behind those changes. I just shot an event last Saturday and when the room went dark the focus went AWOL. Snap focus DOF at f/5.6 was a little thin for practical use. And that anemic flash I agree, it can go. Even a pop up viewfinder like the Sony rx100v would be a better use of space.

what do you think about the announcement yesterday?

I like the new 24MP sensor with its phase detection autofocus and stabilization. The IBIS kinda makes up for the fact that it's an f/2.8 lens still. Speaking of lens, I'll reserve judgement until I see it in action or see the MTF charts. I like the idea of shorter focus distance but am not sure what effect the fewer elements and groups might have. Good riddance to the anemic flash, I'd rather have IBIS if that's what takes up the space. Touch screen? I never use it on the other cameras so that spec is a bit of a wash for me. Others I'm sure will dig it though. I think I might like the fact that the +/- toggle is gone, I'm constantly hitting that thing accidentally. And the control dial seems like a quicker way to access exposure compensation anyway. Now the thing that gets me is they seem to have gotten rid of the TAv function! I use that one constantly. Now I'm sure I'll be able to set the camera up to work similarly with one of the user preset spaces, but it was just too easy before. That said I'll probably still buy it but I have to say I hear the siren song of the Fuji X100 series too so we shall see. Though honestly, I've been using Ricoh since the Gr1v so it's unlikely I'll go Fuji.

With the camera being this small with a folding lens, it is unreasonable to expect it to be weather sealed. It would become bigger and uglier and not match the GR philosophy, they did what they could to keep it what it is and improve upon it, hopefully the price will remain the same as well.

What’s with the $900 price point? The GR is a superb $500 camera, but I’m not desperate enough to pay double.

    • @camerakungfu
      @camerakungfu  5 ปีที่แล้ว

I remember the first iteration of the GRD was $700 when it came out it was an expensive turd of a camera. It had a tiny sensor that was only good to ISO 400. I bought it a couple months after release for around $500 I skipped a generation and did the same with GR I currently have (closer to $600). Honestly I'm hoping to do the same with this version. I think if Ricoh sees a slow roll out they'll be pretty quick to drop the price. But yeah, If I made a living with a GRD it'd be worth it but until that happens I'll be waiting for the price drop.
