Just bought one of these today at Solo. Going to do a black, sand it gently back and then a deep blue. I was a little surprised at how thin the veneer was, but the price should have been my indicator. Brad, thanks for all the learning and work you've done so we don't have to. Bravo dude. I happen to work at a place where we refinish wheels and have a paint booth and spray clear on the daily. I'm going to get them to do about 10 coats of clear so I can wetsand and buff for the mirror.
When you first announced this project, I had no idea how many steps you planned to take to finish it. As with everything else, it’s always worth taking the time to do it right. Pretty amazing, Brad.
Hi brad, a couple of months ago i asked you a question about a quick drying tint used by my boss inbetween coats of poly..i got in touch with him and it was in fact what you said it would be...it was a very thin nitro laquer with a tint. Not exactly correct inbetween poly but it worked a treat and dryed in five minutes..thanks for your help.

First up happy new year mate. Welcome back to this year. Dam I missed the last segment vid there... great work I like that contrasting power it really made it pop. Hmmmm nice.
Hey Brad, fantastic videos. Thorough and very informative. I'm hoping you will give me some tips on how to do a nice job repainting the hardware on my Kiesel Aries M7. Tuners, knobs, and bridge. I want to go from black to gold. I watched your older video on the subject, but I don't have any access to a sandblaster, nor do know anything about airbrushing...and should I use a paint? Do I seal painted metal? I'm very much a DIY guy, and I'm not without skill, but painting metal is out of my wheelhouse.
Part of the issue there is that getting a nice gold finish is quite difficult. Usually those types of items are plated. Particularly if you’re planning on doing all of the hardware and not just a couple flat pieces.
@@BradAngoveThat sounds like a 'do not attempt'. I was afraid you might say that. Definitely a bummer. Thank you for the knowledge and prompt response, it's appreciated. Take care.
@@traviswhite4434 Yeah, I would be pretty hesitant to do that even with the equipment I have. A powder coating place may be able to do something interesting for you, but I doubt it based on the thickness of those finishes.
I've been trying to build complete guitar builds. I'm horrible with the finished. Would like to see a vid on the quickest thick clear finish. I'm impatient. Only had good finishes with tru oil
@@joenichols9666 Then as long as you have adequate spray equipment, the 2K poly is what I would suggest. I've done a few videos demonstrating it and several discussing it. For example, that's what I used on that first tele kit from solo music gear that I did a series on.
Love it mate but I think it needs a few more coats of oil just to get more of a brighter finish. ( just my thoughts tho) I think it will give the grain more depth and feel. And what's the gauge on your airline? Is it just a pressure gauge? Awesome as always Brad
Looks great Brad! I might try doing this exact same build. Also, it looks great, but does sound and play pretty well (have you had a chance to put it together?)
How does tong oil compare to truoil? I have use truoil on two guitar necks now and it has worked great for me. I like the finish the front of this guitar.
Brad, I’m about ready to start finishing my guitar. Do I tape off the neck pocket for the whole process? Should i seal the pocket or leave it as bare wood? Thanks!
Top is looking awesome! The back would look great in that walnut finish, I've always liked that look. Or are you going with something that will pop more?

Man that is going to look gorgeous when you get it all nice and shined up, are you going to use nitro or you keeping us in suspense? Lol, I actually started to work on a Tele kit I bought over a year ago. I decided to bevel the outer edges and give it a sort of a "carved top" look and am also working on the belly cut. I plan on making the easy access carving on the heel area and the kit cam with traditional Tele pups and holes but I have a brand new set of DiMarzio double humbuckers that I am seriously considering putting in. Luckily I have two big sheets of pick guard material, black and white 3 ply, maybe 4 ply I don't remember lol. Now I am thinking of using something like that bronzing powder you used, but darn it I didn't want to spend any more money on it lol.
@@BradAngove thanks. I looked at some of your other finishes and I'm thinking a darker color such as burnt umber first, then sanded, with yellow on top might be what I'm looking for
Great series on this kit build! I have a kit with a super thin veneer and a coat of sealer on it. I plan on sanding and staining with minwax water based stain but I'm concerned about not being able to get all the sealer off and sanding through the veneer. Any suggestions on how to handle this? How high of a grit do I sand with to get through the sealer but not sand through the veneer? Would wood conditioner help to absorb my water based wood stain? Any guidance would be much appreciated!
@@BradAngove no I haven't considered that. Would I still need to sand the guitar body if I used a toner instead? Any suggestions on a good product I can use? Thanks!
You would sand it smooth, but not need to sand through. A toner lacquer is a transparent lacquer, so the grain would show through. Have a look at my old series on how to paint a guitar with behlen a guitar finishing kit. It shows the use of toner lacquers.
Just bought this kit and am an absolute beginner to finishing and had a couple noob questions 😝. I wanted to go with a black to green burst. Seen some guides that say to use grain filler on porous woods. Is that necessary for the top? Or can I just use a black stain then sand the middle away and add the color? Separate question: do you have an opinion on whether or not a wipe on poly would do better than tung oil for a semi-gloss finish? Looking for something I can apply at home.
The filler depends on how smooth you want the end product. If you look at the end of this series, I have kept some grain patterning in the top on mine. I love wipe on poly as well. It’s a bit of a different system to apply, but can also get a good result. They’re both easy finishes to work with.
Hi Brad, thanks for all the great vids man. I've ordered this ash burl kit, and I'm hoping to do all the grain filling and finishing with tru-oil. Do you think that will be a suitable method for this guitar body?
I think you will find it difficult to grain fill with tru oil. If you’re ok with having the grain texture come through the final finish then it’s a suitable method. I left some grain texture in the top on mine and I love it.
So what is the Rust-Oleum painters touch 2x? Acrylic? Oil based? They seem to go out of their way to not to tell you. I looked up the SDSs and everything lol

What it modified tung oil? What makes it different from regular tung oil?
The tung oil is mixed with a solvent based propolymerized alkyd resin that allows it to dry quickly.
Yes, the addition of the resin makes it faster and allows you to apply thicker coats to get it a bit more like a film finish type thing.
