In 1986, I was part of the small crowd that witnessed Tom Petty present the Everly Brothers with their star on the Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame. Standing right next to me was another fan, Elvis Costello, who went unannounced and unacknowledged, just another fan paying his respect to the legendary duo.
Thank you for the CBS This Morning report on the legendary Everly Brothers (Don and Phil). Their brand of rockabilly music is the stuff that great musicians are made of. If the melodies capture enough attention, then one is awarded fame (let alone wealth), but if it captures more than enough attention, then one is destined for super stardom, leading to abundant recognition from peers, the public, and those willing to see accolades come to life. Don and Phil are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Although there are gone, the music they left behind remains cherished forever.
What a cool report! When I was little, of course, my parents had their album and 45s. So, I grew up listening to them. But as a teenager, I didn't make it home from the local drive-in on time one night. My parents said I could only stay long enough to see two of the three featured movies. But when I didn't get home when they expected, they decided to find me. During the third movie, my boyfriend and I, both fast asleep in the front seat of the car in bucket seats, woke to my parents beating on the car windows! After that, they broke out the old Everly Brothers record and played Wake Up Little Suzy constantly! Great memory of some great music!!!
@@garyfaught3769 Thanks! I didn't really realize that they were cool, but both loved music and my dad played several instruments. But it was my mom who allowed pop music in the house which made life fun!
I’m a boomer and I totally get it. I’m old enough to remember the Everlys from the late 1950s. They influenced so many up and coming musicians both in the US and the UK. 65 years later, their music is still fabulous. No one has ever come close to capturing the perfection of their harmonies in all those years.
@@actownsend7288 Simon & Garfunkel are both huge fans of the Everlys. I loved that they asked Don and Phil to join them on their tour back in 2003. And not as an “opening act” either but as their special guests in the middle of their show. Very classy.
Love the Everlys! There harmonies and the way their guitar playing complimented each other. Definitely want one of those double pickguard Gibson s. Thanks for the story
I was at Simon/Garfunkel Concert in 2003...and could not believe that the Everly Brothers played a couple of songs.....before Social Media! Surprise...CLASSIC.
Me too! I was 13 and a big S&G fan but had only just begun to explore the influence from the Everlys. I about passed out when they had that surprise appearance, but I wish I had known them a bit better by then to appreciate it more.
The Everly Brothers, Freddie Mercury, Buddy Holly, so many fabulous people that you wish could live forever; had so much more to give to us. We were so lucky to have had them at all.

Everly Brothers wrote magic
I’m old enough to have been a teen when the Everlys were in their prime. I’ve always loved them and still listen to a CD of their greatest hits. They influenced so many of the greats that came after them.
The Everly Brothers’ voices were so beautiful they sounded as one! They were gorgeous. One of their best albums was “Songs Our Father Taught Us”. And what a surprise to hear Billy Joe Armstrong and Norah Jones cover that album! It is amazing!
Their father, Ike Everly, was an accomplished guitar player from Muhlenberg County KY, and was influential in the playing of Merle Travis, the namesake of "Travis Picking", or "Thumb style" picking. This is the same style of playing practiced by by Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler.
The Everly brothers were my moms favorite singers she would tell me that she didn't care for Elvis because she didn't care for the "bad boys" lol! So it was the Everly brothers and Ricky Nelson, and I was given my name from the song Cathy's clown!
Joe B. Mauldin and Jerry Allsion (The Crickets), and I believe Sonny Curtis performing "All I have To Do Is Dream" ans "Kathy's Clown"with Phil and Don.
It's often forgotten that Simon and Garfunkel's first record was a teener heavily inspired by the Every Brothers. "Hey Schoolgirl", released under the name "Tom and Jerry", was a small hit in the NY City area in he late 50s. It's easily found on TH-cam,
Can you imagine popular music without the Beatles? Lennon and McCartney made it pretty clear that without the Everlys, there would have been no Beatles, who in their early days sometimes referred to themselves as the Foreverly (or maybe Foureverly) Brothers. It's obvious to anyone that the Beatles stole their famous harmonies from the Everlys. They were lucky their voices happened to complement each others, like the brothers did.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Everly Brothers, I just really wish that in segments like this more recognition was given to the songwriters. "All I Have to Do Is Dream", "Bye Bye Love", "Wake Up Little Susie" and several others were written by husband and wife Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. They also wrote "Rocky Top" by the way. To be fair, The Everly Brothers did write several of their hits including "Gone, Gone, Gone (Done Moved On)," "Cathy's Clown," and "When Will I Be Loved" among many others. Side note: There are two great documentaries about session musicians out there if interested: The Wrecking Crew and Muscle Shoals.
Both Don and Phil wrote some great songs. However, to reach a a critical mass of material, they needed Boudleaux and Felice Bryant's songs on Cadence Records, whom they left Management failed them, not changing tastes, because country rock became bigger than ever. Also, they never lost popularity in England. In hindsight, their manager should have sat them down, and offered things like the Flying Burrito Brothers. Or the Stones' "Factory Girl" and "Salt of the Earth."
I don't believe that without the Everly Brothers(who were great)there would be no Tom Petty,CSN etc. These groups and people would have had careers and songs to write and sing,no matter who was around before them.
Not sure why these are called “rarities” as most of the songs on this collection were on one of their biggest albums they ever sold and most songs from their HUGE 1960-1963 period. Misleading title for sure. The only new thing is the remix and remaster.

"Wake up little Suzy" a song about a couple - which could have been two girls, they never say - that fall asleep watching a movie was deemed too hardcore for Boston so they banned it. My God, what kind of an uptight, soulless, half dead zombie do you have to be to find that song offensive? That's like banning "How much is that doggie in the window"

Very cool. A great songwriter acknowledging his predecessors.
The music of the Everly brothers is timeless. Their songs always put me in a great mood.
I was a teen in the 50s, when all this exploded. Just hearing them makes my heart flutter. These guys, their harmonies. and beats are forever.

Harmony perfection!!💙💙
my grandmother loved the Everly Brothers and Ricky Nelson. Miss her every day… 🥰
“Where words fail, music speaks.” They were a once in a lifetime helper to get thru life
My favorite of theirs I still listen to regularly, "So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad)".....what a beautiful tune!!
Man there harmony singing on that song can make you cry
That’s my favorite song of theirs, too, Darin. Don does a beautiful solo version of it, too on his 1976 album called “Brother Jukebox”.

I had a great time turning my son on to their music.🎵 We would have our Everly Brothers CD’s playing them in the truck and singing along.
I went to school w/ Don Everly's kids. His son was/is a musician so it's definitely in the DNA!

Some of the best harmonies in Rock And Roll.

Still considered by many the best harmonies in rock, especially the groups that tried to imitate them.
There's just something about kin harmony.
