    READ THIS FIRST!!!! what he's showing is how to remove the housing, if you just need to remove the solenoid there's a 10mm right behind it, you can see it very easily. All you need to do is unscrew it and wiggle the solenoid out, it has O-rings so it'll be a little tough but you don't need to pull the housing to replace the solenoid

      For real. but how did you get at that bolt with the useless piece of casting in the way there?

      @@ChrisLesmerises you can remove the cam sensor bracket buy loosening the sensor and then removing the upper bolt. this gives you access to the bolt that holds the variable valve timing solenoid in place. its not a fun job but you do not need to do what this guy dose.

      @@nophobia123 ya I got the sensor loosened up and you can swivel it about to take out that upper bolt your talking about. I still can’t see how you have access though bc it’s still blocking the VVT solenoid. I see also another bolt underneath and a hex head even lower, all apart of the same manifold. Can prying that casing give me the clearance needed or do I need to take those out too. Seems a tough to pry and makes me feel like more needs to be undone

      What I did was used my Dremel and grinded away the useless aluminum part that pretty much blocks the 10 mm bolt. Oh and for more room u definitely have to remove the battery and I also found that using a 10mm but driver makes it easy to remove solenoid

      @@Dannyaudio69 Yes, that's what I intend to and grind a bit of the casting that's shading the bolt. I don't have a 1/4" ratchet set to see if that helps. Thanks for posting.

    I simply loosened the cam sensor and was able to access the 10mm bolt head. For godsakes don't go tearing your timing and stuff apart.

    To remove the solenoid:
    Remove the cam sensor bolt than the bolt for the cam sensor bracket. Back the cam sensor out far enough to clear the cam cover.
    Then pry the cam sensor bracket and it will come off with the sensor. This exposes the VVT solenoid bolt. I used a 10mm box wrench for the tough ones to get to.

      I am unable to pry the bracket anywhere. It is solid even after removing the top bolt and sensor bolt. Is this different for different models? I have 2007 legacy.

      @@garliceggs Hi, if it’s a 4 cylinder non-turbo, it’s the same engine. You have to slide the cam sensor out a little so it clears enough to swing out of the way. Might have to hit the bracket with some Blaster if there’s rust. It should pry right off.

      2007 Subaru Legacy AWD 2.5L FI SOHC 4cyl. I was able to slide the sensor, just not the housing for it. It doesn't move. I don't see any rust.

      @@garliceggs Sometimes they get stuck. There’s a tight fitting boss that indexes the bracket to the head. Spray it down with some PB Blaster and tap it with a small hammer. Pry from behind and it should come out. Mine was a little tough to get off and when it finally came loose, it slung the cam sensor under the vehicle. Luckily I bought a new cam sensor. Keep working on it, it’ll come apart!

    Im confused, I think there was too much work to do something simple, because theres a single bolt in the picture of the new part, thats shows it holds the solenoid in the body that you took all the work to take off? Picture doesnt show all of that. i guess ill find out when I get the parts and go at it. now I could see one of those oil passages could be clogged?

    I had a VVT code pop up on my nissan murano. Luckily I changed the oil and it went away after a few days. Felt the difference in driving immediately as well. However if I did have to replace the solenoid it would of been wayyyy easier than this! Love your subaru videos though. I have a few friends that have outbacks, and it's nice to have some knowledge like this to help them with troubleshooting problems.

      Do we need to change oil for that? I mean i have to change the right side (passenger side) it is a lot easier to do, but i wonder if i removed it will the engine oil drain in that case? Do i need to empty the oil first? Subaru diagnosed the problem that i need to change this particular VVT solinoid, but they also said they need to change the oil in the prosess not sure wy.. my engine oil is changed for about 2 monthes ago and i decided to change the solinoid myself to spare some money, but wasint sure if i need to empty the engine oil for that first, maby thats wy subaru want to change oil?
      I appreciate the answer will help a lot thank you.

    why didnt you replace the solenoid alone? does the housing matter

      You can, but the stupid cam sensor bracket and timing belt cover is in the way... So you can't get a socket or a wrench on it... Going to try and see if I can get the sensor and sensor bracket off tomorrow... Otherwise I have to do what he did to get at it... I'll let you know...
      Poking around found this... yes you can get at it with out ripping the front part of the engine off...
      Just remove the cam sensor and bracket... it might be hard to get off because of an alignment pin...
      But you can do it.

      And so far haven't seen if there are any screens in the hosing like on the earlier gens...

      Use a 10mm offset wrench but 1st remove cam sensor 10mm bolt and spread to create space, took me 10 minutes to do

    I replaced both solenoids left and right.. I even replaced both oil pressure sensors.and the code p0083 keeps coming back. after I cleared the codes on my scanner why is this??

    Well the cover is only three screws then u loosen the camshaft sensor and u have access to the bolt

    No ways.. in SA we hone out where you can't get socket in... ot takes 20 minutes for the left.. no need to pull the whole motor.. and right side takes 5 minutes.. import the solenoids and do it yourself... its so simple

    STOP ! I just thru a p0028 code on my 09 2.5 lego. Checked all the vids. Did ohm test and 0 on the solenoid. Saw that the effen engineers decided that you would have to take all the timing covers etc off to get at it. there is a bracket in the way so you can't get a socket on the solenoid 10mm. Fuck that. I took my dremmel with a metal cutting wheel and cut the nob on the bracket off. Easy to get a socket on it now. Good luck bros. J R

    What's the whining/buzzing sound in the background from 2:58 to 3:59? We're getting the same sound from our engine when the electricity is on and I'm trying to figure out if it's normal.

    Ok I need help pleaseeee ok here's the problem I did every thing u said for testing the voltage..it all came back correct on driver's side vvt and passenger side vvt both harness connectors read correctly on the meter....but every time I clear the p0083 code it comes on immediately??? Why is this??

    Is the replacement part the same for the driver's side? All I can find are variable valve timing solenoids, but not valve lift solenoids. I have a 2009 Subaru Impreza with the 2.5 engine. Thank you.

    I think my harness is bad, as I have replaced both of the solenoids and still getting an intermittent code corresponding to this solenoid, before I got throw a harness at it, this solenoid isn't triggered by a relay is it?
