    Why not put an anchor point on your floor... That way you don't need weights just secure one end to the anchor and the other end to your scale don't need to worry about weights then.... And if you make the loop on the anchor point removable you don't need to worry about tripping over it

    The results were as expected. Drano by itself will have no effect on the PVC (or ABS) pipe. It is when these chemicals come into contact with organic matter that they react, and sometimes give off a LOT of heat. It is this heat that can damage a pipe. Jam a bunch of hair into the pipe to create a strong clog and try again, except measure the temperature of the pipe where the clog is.

      What about DWV copper?

    • @annonym12321
      @annonym12321 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Drano is diluted hydrochloric acid which means it is super reaktive to all kinds of different stuff. PVC or PolyVynylChloride (if I recall correctly) is super unreactive. This means the acid has no chance at attacking it.

    • @annonym12321
      @annonym12321 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@adamk5487 But if we do your experiment with the copper tube there will definately be a difference. You can look at youtube experiments reacting copper coins with hydrochloric acid. There is a strong reaction and the copper breakes down. So a copper pipe definately does something, however it could either take a long time or the solution of drano + copper gets too saturated and nothing can react anymore. This means he would have to change the drano a few times maybe.

    • @salgonzalez908
      @salgonzalez908 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean if you had a pissy or shitty clog that was blocking a crack or hole then the drano product removed it then yes you would have an issue lol. Maybe create some cracks and holes and seal it with something similar to what you would find” down under and see what the drano does.

    • @solzimm
      @solzimm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@annonym12321 It's the opposite, drano is sodium hydroxide solution, which is an extreme base. There are drain cleaners that are acids, typically sulfuric.
      Hydrochloric might do an okay job of clearing a drain if you let it sit for a while but it would likely etch metal piping if you have it in your sink like a lot of plumbing traps are made of.

    • @russjess18
      @russjess18 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Alot of the damage would be caused by the sulfuric acid that most drain cleaners have in them witch breaks down foods and other things you put down the drain and that is why most of them say not to use in metallic pipes because that will break them down but car batteries are made from plastic and contain more amounts of sulfuric acid and do just fine the leak may be caused by the age of the rubber gasket and what ever build up on the inside of the pipes that the Drano cleaned away

    • @annonym12321
      @annonym12321 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@russjess18 no way there is sulfiric acid in cleaning products. You would be crazy to use that as it reacts super exothermic with water. This would mean water could start to boil, evaporate and destroy your pipes due to the expansion of gasses. Cleaning products always use diluted hydrochloric acid. Your statement about the metal pipes is not wrong though as hydrochloric acid basically acts in the same way as sulfiric acid only slightly weaker.

    • @whitey2shotpewpew825
      @whitey2shotpewpew825 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    In both cases bleach was poured in drain first , then followed by liquid plumber.

    @TylerTube Don't know if this has already been said but, drain cleaners react with hair, dirt, soap scum etc. what ever it is causing you to use a drain cleaner in the first place. This reaction can generate a lot of heat, it's the heat the drain cleaners generate that cause the problems with pvc pipe and joints whether they be glued joints or compression joints.
    So not the product that causes the issue its the reaction with what the product is trying to clear.

    The short answer for if draino affects the bonds between pvc pipes is no. PVC glue uses a solvent bond, not an adhesion bond like most glues people are familiar with. A solvent bond actually melts the surface of the material its bonding so the 2 pieces fuse together into one. solvent bonds are significantly stronger then adhesion bonds and arent affected by solvents.

    This was cool to watch. However as a former plumber the comment you made at the end about not expecting to see it melt, is the actual danger most plumbers would warn you about regarding Draino. Prolonged exposure to draino will cause PVC to melt and warp. 24 hours is apparently not enough time but the trouble is most plumbing fixtures have a trap. It is a bend in the drain the keeps a constant amount of water in it to prevent sewer gases from coming back into your home. It’s easiest to see on a kitchen sink or lavatory. But there is one internally on your toilet (made out of porcelain, not susceptible to damage from Draino) and one on your tub and shower which if on the second floor is hidden. When you use Draino, especially for a physical blockage that Draino won’t really be able to clear you are trapping Draino in that pipe. It doesn’t seem so bad based on your test however a lot of trap assemblies are made out of less than schedule 40 PVC like you used and are much thinner and much more susceptible to damage in the short term from Draino, and prolonged use, say constantly flushing it down the tub and shower drain to eat away those hair blockages can lead to corroded pipes, which are hidden in your walls, which you’ll be paying a pretty penny to fix. Moral of the story, once in awhile it’s ok, always run the water for a good while once the blockage is cleared. A drain that is repeatedly getting clogged, call a plumber.

    I was a plumber for a year and 4 months... pvc is a great material... in canada (quebec) we use grey pvc fot comercial/public/industrial use in draining systems... but for residential/private piping, we use black abs tubes or iron tubes with rubber collars... both react with highly concentrated drano... abs react with the heat created when drano comes in to contact with "sewer grey smosh" by weakening and partialy melt over severial uses...

    Minor nitpick/safety advice here. When you pull on a rope connected to a winch or pulley, always use an overhand grip, (IE pinkies towards the block). Mechanically, this gives you a much better grip, and in the event that your hand gets sucked into the block, It hits the outer edge of your hand instead of catching your thumbs. Even if you do lose a finger, you'd rather lose a pinkie than a thumb or index

    I know this was 4 years ago, but, I just can't help myself. You realize Drano is in a 'plastic' container,.... What do you suppose that 'plastic' container is made of?..... Yup, you guessed it, PVC. That's why it held so much weight, ....
    Also, you need water to activate the Drano, it's called a chemical reaction, which will generate heat, aaannnnnd,a lot of it, try it with good ol' h2o, leave it for 24 hours, organic matter helps too, I bet you'll get a completely different result.
    I really enjoy your videos! Thanks for all the crazy shit you do! I love it!

    As a plumber I feel it could possibly make a difference if you used actual foam core or dwv (drain waste and vent) rated pipes they’re not rated for pressure like the fittings and pipe you used and are noticeable lighter and easier to cut than schedule 40 pvc. I really like the videos though man keep making good content! Dwv is also a lot cheaper than 40

  • @WhirlybirdFlyer
    @WhirlybirdFlyer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know I am a little late to the party sorry, this is going to be a long one. There are a few issues with this test but I respect what you are trying to do.
    Firstly the fittings that you used in the test are PVC fittings only used for water supply lines out doors. They are what we call pressure fittings and have deeper sockets to glue the pipe into. You can tell the difference be the socket depth and over all fitting shape as the drainage fittings do not have sharp corners or edges to allow water to flow more smoothly.
    I could not tell for sure what pipe you are using, but it is also important to note that there are two types of PVC pipe as well. One is made for pressure and the other waste lines. The walls of "drain, waste, and vent" pipe or "DWV" are not solid plastic. They are a sort of sandwich with a thin plastic lining on the outer and inner faces and a hard foam material in the center. This is called foam core and it is the most prevalent type of pipe used in drain lines. it is much less rigid than the solid walled Schedule 40 used for pressure.
    You used the right glue and primer combo (RIP your garage floor and table) however when gluing joints together always but both primer and glue on both the socket or "female" connection on the fitting, and on the section of pipe that will go into it. This will make your joints easier to put together and much stronger when dry.
    The last point is that you are probably not in any danger of your PVC being eaten away by Draino. I think people who say this are really talking about the "tubular" piping found on the P-traps and fittings under sinks. This pipe has a much much thinner wall and the connections are sealed with rings made from different types of material. These I could see being a weak point that may be negatively impacted.
    The real problem that I run into out in the field is that when a pipe has a major blockage that is not in the pipes directly under the sink or toilet but deeper in the main line. They will dump Draino on top of the water hoping it goes down. The issue is that there is probably at least 10' of water between the stoppage and where you are putting the product. I have never seen Draino clear a problem in the main line but it does sit in the water making my job more difficult and dangerous when I have to put a metal cable into it and it comes out on my equipment and gloves/clothes. As a plumber the only time we use acid is to eat away calcium deposits in urinals, everything else can be cleared mechanically.
    Sorry for the long response that is long past its prime.
    TL:DR Don't use Draino, it is a waste of money.
