Hello Tyler, first you really should wear safety glasses when working with any acid or base. All that it takes is one drop to blind you. These chemicals are very unforgiving. I believe Drano is a sodium hydroxide based drain cleaner. They put inhibitors in the Drano so the sodium hydroxide isn't as strong. You should try using just straight sodium hydroxide powder. Drano fixes clogs less by dissolving and more by heating. Once you add water to the mix, it heats the (normally) fats that are holding the clog together, and allow it to loosen. I wouldn't recommend doing the aluminum again with water added. It rapidly creates hydrogen gas. I think people add them together to make balloons explode, if I'm not mistaken.
Wood Crafter the lids were not that loose enough for airflow... the inner lids have gaskets that were sealed to the rim of the jar. You can go back and watch that. Also the only one that ‘bubbled’ over was the one with aluminum foil; that’s because (if you didn’t fail 8th grade science class you would know) aluminum foil + drain cleaner = explosive hydration gas... therefor the pressure differential was higher inside the jar compared to the pressure outside the vessel. I’m actually surprised that the jar didn’t crack or explode due to the exothermic reaction caused by the mixture.
I think the reason some of the things didnt fully disolve is because the active agent in the drano can only react with so much of the stuff like the belt. And after a while it cant react anymore. Given a larger amount of drano, say a 50 gallon bucket, things like the belt wouldnt be completely gone

Drano is 92% Sodium Hydroxide. Drano doesn't dissolve hair, it makes it slimy so it slides down the drain easy. With the belt it only dissolved the glue that holds the vinyl cover to the leather. As far as the Aluminium; it reacts to aluminium by breaking it down and separating the hydrogen gas, So I would not have opened it in a closed garage it is likely you inhaled a large amount of hydrogen gas when you opened it. That is why the jar seemed to "overflow". 13:53 That white milky layer is the Sodium Hydroxide breaking down the Citric Acid in the skin and destroying the carotenoids. Liquid sodium hydroxide is colorless and has no odor. It can react violently with acids and with water. So they would not have any smell resulting from soaking in Drano. The minor smell from Drano comes from the other chemicals in it.
I'm surprised the aluminum foil didn't bust open you're jar! Draino and aluminum have an exothermic reaction (gets really hot when mixed), and could've thermally shocked the glass!
Im like 90% sure its the fat in the leather not the stain and thats why you see it with the clementines also since they have fat in the oil's i could be wrong but i dont think its the stain or polish(unless it has natural oils in it)
Leather is made out of the skin of an animal so there actually wouldn't be that much fat in it so it was more likely the dye or whatever there used as tannin
@@bradenalder9016 That's right. They dehydrate all that out. But what happens when liquid is added back into it? Wouldn't it thicken backup and then bubble out, from the Drano? Either way, it all looked sick and nasty. Kinda like the Democratic Party right about now. 😉😄
Considering Drano DOES have a fair amount of Sulfuric Acid in it, these results are what’s to be expected. But as for the rope, the reason it wasn’t affected all too much is due to the fact that it was made from Nylon, which is not organic, so no reaction occured. The Aluminum foil is most likely due to an oxidation reaction, showing that Drano also has some form of an oxidizing agent. Interesting.
Juan Chico I was afraid the foil and draino would have a similar effect. My best friend and I did that in the middle of our woods and my mom ran out of the house screaming thinking we shot off a 12 gauge 😂
As Chuck Norris's has proven the more Manly you are the Stronger your Hair becomes! That's why REAL MEN have REAL BEARDS we just cannot shave without using industrial heavy equipment to cut it! But why nothing stunk you need bacteria to break down the material and the Draino prevents bacteria from growing on said materials, Which means no bad smells. All you will smell are the chemicals interacting with one another which will give you all sorts of odd chemical smells but normally nothing like a rotting putrid smell. Next time add water and your reactions will be much stronger! A 50/50 mix of draino and water should work best.
Drano works since it is heavier than water and pretty much pushes what is clocgged outside once you pour hot water afterwards. It doesn't really dissolve stuff, but loosens it, and since it is heavier, the weight pushes the loosened material out afterwards.
Drano is mostly sodium hydroxide (lye) so it won't have an oxidative effect on materials like you were expecting. You'd get a much more interesting result putting things like meat or organs in the drano bath. Additionally mixing equal parts of drano and water will help fuel a chemical reaction to digest organic substances like hair. To be completely honest, I'm surprised the aluminum didn't overheat and cause a fire or explosive reaction and the acid in the oranges didn't react with the very alkaline drano. Perhaps it helped neutralize the reaction? Most likely the lack of water prevented strong reactions from taking place (like the belt, which probably had moisture in the leather) and kept the aluminum from exploding.
Drano doesn't dissolve keratin, it dissolves lipids and drastically reduces the surface tension of water to break down the oils and dirt that builds up around things like hair in the drain. The Drano dissolved the lipids in the leather and whatever wax/oils that it was finished with. Wash it with alcohol and soak it in linseed oil and it will be good as new. Drano, as most drain cleaners do, contain lye in order to break down the lipids. Lye (sodium hydroxide) reacts with the aluminum to create hydrogen gas (you could've blown up your jar) and sodium aluminate, breaking down the aluminum sheets into bits.
Put some foil balls into a pop bottle and squirt toilet bowl cleaner in it (half full or so) throw the cap on, give it a few shakes and throw it in the yard and watch awhile....
Im thinking there is a chemical in toilet bowl cleaner that maybe isnt in drano. I promise i thought that was going to blow up. My friends and i use to make them with mean green and foil and blow them up in the yard.
The milky and spider web stuff you said came from the oranges is DNA and the belt might be the chemicals from the tanning process or maybe DNA too if you put things in rubbing alcohol ANF dish soap it would also take the DNA out of the oranges
@@supermegadeath309 they are but there's a lot of DNA in 1 of them so it's just a cluster of DNA the molecules are still too small to see by themselves
Okay...Drano is basically lye (sodium hydroxide), which dissolves fats, which is the white slime you saw with the belt (conditioners and oils to keep the leather soft) and oranges (orange oils found in the skin). The oranges were basically protected by the lye reacting with the oils in the skin to form what is basically soap. If you had cut the oranges first, the insides might have broken down some. Lye doesn't "dissolve" the hair, but makes it more flexible and slippery so it slides through the drain (lye is also used in permanents for curling or straightening hair), so you were pretty spot on about that. Lye reacts with aluminum to produce aluminum hydroxide (crunchy black stuff) and hydrogen gas, so it's a good thing you vented the jars! I was worried you might have a busted jar plus fire with the aluminum. Finally, the rope is probably nylon, which is pretty inert, so your probably won't be able to get any sort of acid or alkali (which is what lye is) to have any effect. You might have had more of an effect if you had used a rope made of natural fibers like cotton, hemp or jute. Also, you seemed surprised that things didn't smell bad. This is because things which are rotting are actually being digested by microorganisms (bacteria and fungi mostly), which produce the stench associated with rot. A very high pH (alkali, like lye) or a very low pH (acid) will kill or at least slow down most germs, so what you've done here is actually pickled all the items in your vid, killing any germs and so no bad smells 😊 Pretty interesting vid for peeps with a curious mind 😉 I have to agree with most posters were: Use eye protection (face shield is better if there might be splashing) and LONG gloves! Drano is caustic and can burn your skin.

The ammonia would neutralize acid
Always wondered what would happen when I kept my oranges in a mason jar of drano. But thankfully this bearded man made a video on it so now I know.
Will they help me with my drains?
That would be cool and good
Nope.

do NOT use Drano. it will ruin your pipes and you will be out a fuck ton of money. it happened to my family.
I'm surprised the aluminum foil didn't bust open you're jar! Draino and aluminum have an exothermic reaction (gets really hot when mixed), and could've thermally shocked the glass!
Drains aluminum = hydrogen gas

The drina was reacting to the Polish and stain on the leather
Im like 90% sure its the fat in the leather not the stain and thats why you see it with the clementines also since they have fat in the oil's i could be wrong but i dont think its the stain or polish(unless it has natural oils in it)

I want to see the belt cleaned up
Hey make that drina into a drano or your going to get attacked by Grammer Nazis
Idk why but if you do this again I feel like you should use lemon juice
Retry this, but add some water.

Bad idea with the foil. That would make it extremely dangerous

It looks like Drano just lubed up the hair so it would slide through the drain. 😄
And the Drano just pulled all the fat out of the leather belt.
Leather is made out of the skin of an animal so there actually wouldn't be that much fat in it so it was more likely the dye or whatever there used as tannin

That's right. They dehydrate all that out. But what happens when liquid is added back into it? Wouldn't it thicken backup and then bubble out, from the Drano?

Considering Drano DOES have a fair amount of Sulfuric Acid in it, these results are what’s to be expected. But as for the rope, the reason it wasn’t affected all too much is due to the fact that it was made from Nylon, which is not organic, so no reaction occured. The Aluminum foil is most likely due to an oxidation reaction, showing that Drano also has some form of an oxidizing agent. Interesting.
Use some of that "The Works" drain cleaner with aluminum foil.. That'll give you one great July 4th 👌🏼
Juan Chico I was afraid the foil and draino would have a similar effect. My best friend and I did that in the middle of our woods and my mom ran out of the house screaming thinking we shot off a 12 gauge 😂
🤣 it does! My brothers used to put it in two liters shake it up and throw it and it would sound like a gun went off
We used to use the 5 gallon jugs for the water stands. And it would sound like a bomb going off. Lmao

Well good to know that if I get aluminum foil stuck in my shower drain, drain will do the trick.

Next vid: *I left Drano inside my body for one month (GONE WRONG)(AMBULANCE CALLED!)*
The draino probably reacted with the varnish on the leather belt.
Drano works since it is heavier than water and pretty much pushes what is clocgged outside once you pour hot water afterwards. It doesn't really dissolve stuff, but loosens it, and since it is heavier, the weight pushes the loosened material out afterwards.
You should to two different brands of Drain solution and compare them while testing the abilities

Video Idea for the next Video : "Covering My Beard In Drano For 7 Days..."
Fake this video isn't 30 days long
That's a kind of man who would not shave his beard off but rather cut his hair and get a cap
Nothing happened to the rope because it's plastic
David Horn rope is not made of plastic
@@cecilmcwilliams9309 what is it if it's not nylon then?
Aluminum foil and draino = hydrogen gas and it's highly flammable
I'm sure its been mentioned, but dude, eye protection!
Pfff... a real man rinces away his eyes with Drano!!
@@Chong1975 nah man. Real men wash their eyes with nuclear waste
Uhhhh... are you trying to make a bomb with the draino and foil?

PurePlays Yeah, but SCIENCE!!!!!!!!
PurePlays I’ll be the nice person lol hey man they were being sarcastic but I respect the concern ✊🏽
It dissolved the glue and film protectant of the belt
do this exact same experiment but use gasoline. now stuff will disolve
The milky and spider web stuff you said came from the oranges is DNA and the belt might be the chemicals from the tanning process or maybe DNA too if you put things in rubbing alcohol ANF dish soap it would also take the DNA out of the oranges
James Hale u do know that dna molecules are too small to actually see , right?
@@supermegadeath309 they are but there's a lot of DNA in 1 of them so it's just a cluster of DNA the molecules are still too small to see by themselves
@@supermegadeath309 yes exactly what zomie killer said you can go watch this happen on the action lab he does it with a strawberry
A very high pH (alkali, like lye) or a very low pH (acid) will kill or at least slow down most germs, so what you've done here is actually pickled all the items in your vid, killing any germs and so no bad smells 😊
Pretty interesting vid for peeps with a curious mind 😉
I have to agree with most posters were: Use eye protection (face shield is better if there might be splashing) and LONG gloves! Drano is caustic and can burn your skin.
