I've never seen anyone use "auteur family horror" to describe this game so that's very interesting! But I agree that this game brought a breathe of fresh air to the franchise.
The Baker's story is so good that it could stand alone as it's own walking sim game.
I love this game. 2017 was the start of Capcoms rebirth and I’m so glad it happened. Who would’ve thought that a mainline RE game without any of the top characters would be so good.
Man! Resident Evil 7 is so good. Watching this made me want to play it so bad. It’s been a while! My first play through of it was in VR and it’s honestly one of my all time best gaming experiences. I would love to experience that for the first time again. Excellent Residecember, Mateo! Can’t wait for the next one.

Resident Evil 7 is one of my favourites in the series. I love the Texas Chainsaw elements, the tragedy of the Bakers and Ethan's journey over the game. I also really enjoy the DLC, with Not A Hero making Chris Redfield my favourite character in the games.
I played this in VR. So much fun.
I got into the RE franchise when it was going for its more action approach. Then, RE7 was announced; more trailers and gameplay demos come out after it & boy was it terrifying in a good way.
The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre has always been an inspiration since Resident Evil 1. The intro telling about gruesome murders in Raccoon City mirrors news reportings in that movie. But yeah, it was an extra strong inspiration for RE7.
Man this was so much better than VILLAGE...
RE7 is better than Village in my opinion. It feels more like a horror game than Village, and has more of a claustrophobic feeling that I really love.

Masterpiece. One of the best games I've played in my life, and definitely in my top 3 RE games.
RE 7 truly gave me shivers, it was so terryfing that it was soo good. I love horror and i usually never get scare, but when this title came out, it surprised me . Even today some parts of the game still get me. Your explenation is great, thanks for sharing :)

RE7's concept was set and in development before PT was released.
Regarding inspiration: Jack’s chainsaw boss fight with Ethan is Dennis Hopper’s chainsaw duel from Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986).
Loving this series, and got a pleasant surprise when Boy Harsher's Burn it Down Rework started playing! Love that track and love Halloween Ends! :)

It saved the franchise but it destroyed the identity... because of the "fans" of RE.

The series will keep evolving with time even when survival horror titles like the calisto protocol and the dead space remake are out. RESIDENT EVIL WILL ALWAYS REMAIN THE STANDOUT I cannot wait for RE 9 now all we need is silent hill dino crisis and the suffering to make comebacks
I remember when RE first hit on playstation. I was on vacation in Florida, 13 years old at the time. Truly upsetting my mother as I was inside some other kids family condo playing it.
RE7 did it for me again. Such a good game. I think I may enjoy it more than 8. Have to play through them both again and decide.
VR is tempting
This was the first game I ever played on VR... what an introduction that was. I was never a big Resident Evil fan, but this game was truly something else. Haven't had the honor of playing 8 yet because I'm still waiting to get a PS5.... might wait until the Pro is out at this point lol. Anyway, 7 was absolutely horrifying in VR because I truly felt like there was no escape

Resident Evil 7 is my entry point to the franchise and this is magically horrific thus far, I still haven’t finished it. What they do at RE 9 has me on edge for the next insane adventure.

Hey Matt, do you think you can do more retrospective videos on horror movies? I know one franchise that deserves more love. Maniac Cop is the franchise that deserves a retrospective. I'm not sure if you've seen it, but if not, I highly recommend you do.
Matt Draper makes some of the best bangers on TH-cam that hit every time. I think it's about time to give him some kickback for all the hours of entertainment from watching and rewatching videos.
Re5 and 6 really jumped the shark. You could argue 4 started that actiony trend but it was fresh, gave an entirely new environment and camera setup which the latter two pushed to new crazy degrees.
I got back into this series with the REmakes of 2 and 3, the sound design of those games (creaks, water drippings, human sounding moans/etc, and more) that In glad carried over. 7 scared me from ever trying them, and the REmakes were terrifying and modern and this video has just pushed me over the line to downloading 7.
Now. How was Village? A continuation of 7 it looks like, but did it expand its scope while.keeping the tonal features?
Village is really fun from a gameplay perspective. It refines the mechanics of 7 while adding it the best parts of 4 (treasures, more exploration, a merchant). I haven’t finished the game yet (almost tho) but the game feels very disjointed from 7 and the overall franchise. But the game and atmosphere is just too good to stop me from enjoying it
@@bobsmith4092 nice. I just downloaded 7 to my console and bought Village since it's on sale. Got the gold edition or season pass, whatever the all-inclusive version is, besides the multi-player or alt modes, is there a story dlc that continues or branch off from Villahes story?

I'd say this is my fourth favourite RE overall: RE3, REmake 1, Code Veronica, RE7.
7 did the important thing that needed to be done, in light of RE6 IE Character clean slate. RE6 took the series to such a ridiculous level that the sequel needed to essentially ignore it and return to the small scale. Texas Chainsaw Massacre was the main influence I took note of, in game. I also think it would have been better without the giant monster boss at the end. That was almost at odds with the overall narrative.
To me, RE7 and onwards, are technically a _soft REboot_ of the video game's Saga. After 7 previous series focused on the original Raccoon survivors and its aftermath, this time it shifted to a new trilogy, a reset, on a Winters family (Ethan, Mia, and now, their daughter Rose), with older characters now being supporting roles. Sure, it took more time to get used to Ethan and the new trilogy, but we'll get there, like how the original game when it came out and how we know more about the characters like Chris, Jill, Claire, Leon, and Ada. Maybe it's time to warm up towards Winters family. They might be different from the ones we used to root, but to each their own, they could have each strong story-arcs.
After playing this on psvr I can not wait for Village on psvr2 Feb 22.
at first i was very put off by the first person view and the predictable scripted events in the beginning. once i got the hang of it, it became fun until the boat segment. i would love to replay it, but the mia boat labyrinth really left a bad impression. i did somewhat enjoy the ending, but i felt it was supposed to go a different direction, overall felt underwhelming.

Re 7 was so great that Capcom should seriously consider rebooting the franchise again. From the looks of Re 8 the franchise is slowly getting more action oriented again

Would love to play this game but, it's too damn scary so, I watched a playthrough.
This game really make me love the franchise again after how bad RE6 and stuff like umbrella corps was ruining the series.The small scale and the simple story is was helped work in my opinion.I really hope RE9 follow more the RE7 approach.

REVII is one of 'the' examples of how you reinvent a franchise, up there with Breath of the Wild.
Next time you could look at the Resident Evil Revelations 1+2 which are very good and need a 3rd game

I consider 4 a successful experiment and 5&6 mediocre to awful copycats that ruin the appeal 4 had to balance out the crazy action and raised stakes.
I have mixed feelings about this game. On one hand, I respect and appreciate what it did to the franchise. But on the other hand, I hate that the beloved characters I personally grew attached too, were pushed aside for a boring and bland protagonist. Along with it being a First Person Shooter, which is a genre I have little to no affection for. But with that said, this game is very creepy and love that

They explicitly stated that RE5 was influenced by Black Hawk Down. Which says a lot about them that they treat it as a horror influence.
RE5 is based off the fear of Black people. The fear that they are "Primitive" and spread disease. The game even has a doc you can find in it that says that the aboriginal people you fight were actually living in a modern city but that the virus reverted their brains to be more primitive so they reverted to a primitive society.
The game is pretty damn racist. I skip it on my series playthrough. If they ever remake 5 I hope it's a HUGE departure. It needs it.
Yeah, I don't think there's anything you can say to convince me that RE7 wasn't hot garbage, easily the worse mainline game in the series in my opinion hands down. As a RE fan, I was very disappointed with the game overall... and also, I will be forever grateful that it brought back some interest to the series. The game sucked ass, no question about it, but as long as it brought some more fans in, I can't stay mad at it.
