      Romero's words about not being able to make the movie. The man was thinking the same way we do now, a huge wasted chance.
      And the way Hollywood saw videogame adaptations until these last few years gives the "they didn't know what a videogame was so they just didn't like it" angle a lot of credibility.

    The way Romero describes his vision for a RE movie sounds awesome. Claustrophobic, action packed and cheesy. Of course, I’m a sucker for classic RE monsters being included. I would’ve loved to see how Yawn and Plant 42 were pulled off. The way Chris tried to force the Resident Evil title in that monologue made me laugh out loud. Excellent work, Matt. Happy Residecember!

      The reason those shitty movies made it is because most people don't play video games, including the producers. They made them generic to cater to a broad, casual audiences. Had they stayed faithful to the games, most moviegoers would've passed just as they did the games. That's the problem with "video game movies." For example, Welcome to Racoon City was the best they could've possibly done on the tight budget and lack of knowledge on the part of the producers and director. EVERYTHING was inspired by generic action movies and the characters were safely relatable to casual fans. At this point, you'd believe that RE is well-known outside the gaming community but it isn't. Casual movie fans know little about the games, especially the old games. Making video game movies is like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, so to speak.

      @@TheTillmanSneakerReview Well more people play video games NOW MASSIVELY SO, than in the early 2000s when the decision of the Resident Evil movies was going to be made. The perception of video games has entirely changed and vastly more people are positive about video games and the in-depth story significance they hold NOW than they did back then. Seeing from all the story driven games throughout the last 20 years and all the video game shows and movies that have came out that's of HIGH quality like The Last of Us, Castlevania, Arcane, etc

      I truly disagree, because you forget about the Romero's style, Romero is a director with his golden peak at 70s. His visuals and story pace would be different, nothing to do with 2000's style. Just check last Romero movies and compare to Anderson Resident Evil (2002) and Snyder's Dawn of the Dead (2004) there is a huge gap in visuals and production.

    I always loved Romero's script, even with its problems it's miles better than any of Anderson's films IMO. Hell, i'd even say the same about Alan McElroy's RE scripts, going from what i know of those, or at least his revised draft from 1998 (his first draft from 1997 took place in some medical facility instead of the mansion, and zombies were replaced with "mutated psycho cannibals"). And here we are, over 20 years after they rejected Romero's script, and Constantin still keeps fucking up RE film franchise anyway they can. Back in 2018 James Wan and Greg Russo left the reboot film after their script was also rejected by Constantin, because Wan and Russo wanted a hard R film with more focus on horror, while Constantin demanded a PG-13 action sci-fi film and plot which would include A FUCKING TIME TRAVEL so that the reboot could be connected with Anderson films. Even Johannes Roberts got screwed over big time on his film. Because he refused to make PG-13 RE film, Constantin cut the budget from $40 million to $25 million and made him keep changing his script all the time during production. Look into some of the stuff which was in his earlier scripts and what could have been in Welcome To Raccoon City, you might be surprised. Personally, i really like WTRC despite few issues i still have with some of the actors and dialogue, but even its bad parts are better than that piece of shit Netflix series which thankfully got cancelled.

    This sounds awesome! I never read up on this or watched this video because I figured George Romero would be far more inclined to make this more of a straight zombie movie than a bio-weapon movie. Man, I was wrong. The hunters, the giant snake, Plant 42, Neptune, and even possibly stuff from the next game? This is exactly what we needed. They should still make a movie based on this script. Obviously you'd have to touch up the dialogue, but as someone who grew up with the first game, buying it the day it came out just because of the weird cover, the script sounds like it has the best bones of a near perfect movie adaptation of the game.

    It's such a shame, I like W. S. Anderson's movies for what they are, but there's no doubt that Romero's vision would be a masterpiece, even if the x ratings made it a slow burn in terms of success.

    Holy shit! this would've killed if they gave him enough budget! But maybe that was the problem? Everything about it was perfect for The original idea of the first game movie back then. The including of Ada since she was also mentioned in a puzzle in the lab from John her husband. Man This would have been special.

    Someone needs to have the balls to take Romero's completed Resident Evil script and turn it into a movie that brings his vision for the franchise to life. Romero is the godfather of the modern zombie. It's a crime that studio executives prevented him from getting his Resident Evil film made. Seriously how do you refuse a script written by the man who knows this " shit" better than anyone? Romero's Resident Evil film would have been one thousand times better than the so-called Resident Evil films we got in the 2000s.

  • @jeffrey1954
    @jeffrey1954 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    That executive and producer saying that a Resident Evil film should not be something bloody and gory is so tone deaf. They could have just made a censored theatrical version to appease the blockbuster crowd and then released an unrated director's cut as well. What a shame.

    I mean, Jill's character treatment in the unmade film kind of fits right in, with what the games and the animated films and series have done, relegate Jill and Claire to second and third tier characters, who hardly matter in the development of the story at all by now.
    I mean, the Netflix anime even managed to make Rebecca even more into a damsel in distress than she was before.
    Of course that has nothing to do with Romero per se, just in the sense that basically the treatment of these two main characters seems to be even worse now than decades ago in another medium.

  • @HejaWolf
    @HejaWolf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    This sounds so cool. It's a shame it never got made because despite some odd changes, it sounds like a fun and faithful adaptation of the original game.
    With that said, I did enjoy the first Resident Evil movie by Paul WS Anderson and Welcome to Raccoon City was okay, but hugely flawed!
    But this movie sounds more of what I like to see!

      Welcome to raccoon city bombed at the box office, the script was wrong, resident evil 1 and 2 aren't close together in the timeline, it's resident evil 0 to resident evil 1 then resident evil 2 to resident evil 3, way to many things were changed, the characters were messed up, only a few this were good about and that's it.

    • @sarahwilkinson3106
      @sarahwilkinson3106 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Anderson's re movies still did better at the box office then welcome to raccoon city, Anderson's first resident evil movie is the number one re movie and welcome to raccoon city was a mess, it bombed at the box office, the script and timeline were wrong, and the characters were wrong and well the actors didn't look like Leon, Jill, Ada and Clair, Robbie Amel did his best with Chris and people down right hated what they did with wesker

    I think that Romero's vision for Resident Evil was perfect for the era that he wrote the script. If it was made it would surely be one of my favorite horror movie based on nostalgia alone, no doubt. Now, if only we can get our hands on that remote that Morty Smith uses to watch interdimensional cable...maybe we can watch it in a universe where Romero's vision was realized 🤔

    Also, I don't have a problem with Jill's depiction here because this is 1998 Resident Evil 1 Jill, not Resident Evil 3 Remke Jill.
    Back in those days, the character most fans now recognize as being Jill Valentine did not exist. She wasn't a gendebent 80s action movie hero, and most of her personal life was left up to interpretation.

      But all the live action adaptations haven't set the bar very high have they? Even the CGI/animated movies look like masterpieces in comparison and they're far from perfect. Basically it's a race to the bottom: Who can outdo the previous works (in a negative way)?

    This feels like the version we should have got. It would have been amazing. Something about the games I loved, even as a non gamer I could quite happily sit & watch the narratives of the original games emerge as others played. Because of that I never really took to the changes made to the Mila Jovovich series.
    Then that recent reboot. Jesus. Spent too much time screaming "HEY IT'S THE 90's" instead of just being the movie it should have been to begin with.
