I saw this, about 17 years ago, visiting the Houston Texas Zoo. It was a black panther in a very small cage. A sign was posted indicating she had a skin condition. I wondered if it was due to stress. You or I would go crazy in such a confined space. These creatures are meant to roam for miles.

If we were locked up in a cage or such a small place like that, I guess pacing and circling would be the only thing left for us to do...

Actually, there ARE people kept locked up in small places like that! You see, there exist prisons in America in which the inmates are kept in tiny cells in solitary confinement for at least 22 hours per day. These prisons are called "Supermax" -- short for "Super-Maximum Security". And yes, one of the abnormal behaviors that are common in Supermax prisons such as the Security Housing Unit (SHU) at Pelican Bay State Prison in California and ADX Florence (the federal Supermax) in Colorado is pacing -- just like what is seen in many zoo animals!

I also exhibit signs of this behavior, small apartment, mean neighbors, no human contact, I feel so isolated and fearful of people that I can't go out for walks so I pace, though in all honesty my problem is a psychological if not an empathic one, the animals must be respected for their needs or I fear the world may isolate itself to death.

I do pacing and turning on my eight hours kitchen shift when there is no orders to make. Just back and forth until some one sees me and i switch to doing something else. They live there in that cage for the rest of their life. Imagine the joy if they could just run. They would run like forest gump on that epic run. And i would say. Run ! My beautiful animal, run. Just run. ( tears).

What kind of horrible enclosures are those even? D: Some seemed okay, like the bear enclosure, but the others... That's like solitary confinement.
I remember the last time I went to a zoo I was 12-14 years old. We went to a large zoo in a different town. I was used to our town zoo with large, large enclosures where seeing the animals pop out from inside the trees was a rare treat. It was dull, I thought as a child. I wanted to see the animals. And, at that other zoo, I got to... and I very much missed watching dull trees with glimpses of animals. I was uncomfortable a few small, exposed exhibits in already - but what really got me was the tiger enclosure. Concrete hole in the ground with a mote between tigers and guests for good measure. One tiger spent the -entire- time pacing along the lake and staring up at us, occasionally growling.
I told my mom, "If someone falls in there, they're gonna be lunch." Because that was the look of a tiger that had spent the last 10 years looking at an unreachable, racous and annoying, buffét it couldn't get to. I wanted to go home after seeing that tiger, since breaking him out wasn't an option. It was so -obviously- stressed to anyone who has ever owned a pet, if not suffered from anxiety themsevlves. And yet all the adults stupidly laughed at the silly tiger and taught their children it was okay. Blech.

I think that all of the REALLY BAD enclosures we saw in this video are in roadside zoos. Roadside zoos are ESPECIALLY terrible to the animals that live in them. Here's one link to a PETA article about roadside zoos. While I don't subscribe to many of the things that PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) suggests such as going vegan, I DO agree with them about the horrors of these places. www.peta.org/living/entertainment/roadside-zoos-facts/
