I bet you could do a great job of the intro to N.I.B by Black Sabbath. It would be appropriate here as Geezer is usually all over the Pentatonic. Or anything you might favor by B.S.
mark teaches very well , Out of all the videos ive search , this guy seem to have the great teaching skills, he not about showing off , he's always serious about people learning , I decided to write this comment just watching how hard he works to help others , he makes it simple and really knows music bass
This lesson provides essential information for any bass player, regardless of style or genre. Don't forget to emphasize how important it is to land on the "one" after playing these fills.
I Remember When I Started I Couldn't Understand Anything In Your Videos, But After I've Learned A Bit Of Theory And Music Lingo, I Can Follow Along! Thank You Very Much
I've heard from Scott's Devine that really all you need to know to solo OK over a chord progress is to know the root note of the current chord, and the right pentatonic scale starting from that note. This sentiment has also been echo'd in Jeff Schneider's piano soloing video. So it's awesome to find such a practical guide from Mark on these positions.
Thanks for the lessons. I should have this years ago, I am over 60 now and still learning. I think you are a great teacher and every starter on bass, starts here.
Hi Mark, i have been watching this video a few times now, and i know it’s an oldie now, but i am still wondering if there is a reason for not including the e-string, i guess might as wel start , let’s say, for a fourth position , on G on the e-string etc. Taking the exercises partly just one octave lower ..
Wow, Chris, this is a hugely useful lesson! I'm working on this and it's really helping me "see" the fretboard better all the way up and down the neck. Wish I'd thought about it this way years ago. Thanks!
My hand is NUMB,, 😊 But I can't stop smiling , THIS,, should keep me busy for a WHILE.. but it will get my hand and fingers " wired" together..great stuff.
I was thinking maybe you could some of the Grand Funk Railroad stuff: Sin's A Good Man's Brother, or Paranoid, or any other GFR riff. Your lessons are top-notch as usual. Tremendously helpful!
The one thing I'm curious about is the numbering of the positional system. Why is position 1 from the rt. 5 A string position and not the rt. 6 E string position? Simply arbitrary?
PLZ cover a lot of RUSH....Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, YYZ, Closer to the Heart, Working Man, all those great ones...2112 stuff would also be great. I Really like your channel, you make it easy to understand. Thank you
In case these comments are still monitored, it would be helpful if there was really a downloadable PDF. The PDF link goes to a webpage where it is embedded. It isn't downloadable which means I cannot print it without all of the other stuff on the webpage. I try to print these lessons out so I can take notes on them.
Hey bro, just a thought, but it would be really helpful if when you reference a previous week's lesson, you just include a link to it. This was posted 2 years ago, and with your volume of lessons here, I know already I'll be tearing my hair out trying to find it, LOL!! Anyway, keep up the good work !
Hey Mark, excellent lesson on pentatonics. Thanks. Would love to see some top 5 walking bass riffs from modern music (Rock/Pop/Funk/Soul). For example, the main riff from Sad Old Red by Simply Red. Enjoy . . .
The ultimate bass tone and feel for me is Pino Palladino in his Soulquarian era. So anything from D'Angelo Voodoo etc. would be amazing. Bass and guitar tutorials alway cover The Beatles etc. how about something more modern like anything Neo-Soul. There are a lot of parallels between this style and James Jamersons style so it should keep the old heads happy as well 😉
Arthur Norcome Some GREAT Jacksons bass lines. Even though they are famous and singable, both I Want You Back and Blame It On The Boogie have tricky basslines with syncopated 16th notes. Getting the actual notes under the fingers is only the start.
I was thinking more riffs, not complete songs. I ran through a load of Purple stuff yesterday. Stormbringer, Speed King and Black Night will all be in there.
Nice set of songs! Though i would rather put in first place "Fireball" then. I do remember a sweet bass line there, as well as a bass solo :-) "No, No, No" from the same album would also be a nice riff/song for the video to cover. P.S. Although i don't like it anymore so much (because i played it a hell of a lot times back in my youth), Roger Glover does an interesting move (8th's triplet jazzy thing) in Smoke on the Water during a guitar solo. Perhaps worth to talk about that trick (sudden change of tempo\timing) in your future videos.
TalkingBass - Online Bass Lessons I’m afraid I haven’t... do you have a link??? Also a quick question? (I’m a beginner that just started this year) the open G string on my bass seems to be in a different pitch than the G on the 5th fret of my D string. It’s not that it’s out of tune they just seem to both have a different tone. I tried this out on 2 other basses both with a $1.3k(or more) difference in value and they both seem to have thing ‘issue’ as well... any ideas on what’s going on?
Flea vid is here th-cam.com/video/L5bDL84W8tM/w-d-xo.html& I've done loads of Flea things on various lessons (remember there are about 200 of my lessons on YT). As for the open string, you'll find the same notes in lots of different places on the neck. They aren't supposed to sound the same. The different positions and string thickness will give different tones you can use to your advantage. If you want more beef to a note go for it on the E or A string. More twang or definition, go for thinner strings or the open strings.
TalkingBass - Online Bass Lessons ahhh I see... alright! Thx for your help and your channel has gotten my interest in learning new things on the bass! Cheers!
Hi everyone. Remember to let me know what bands/styles you'd like to see covered in the Top 5 Riffs vids!
TalkingBass - Online Bass Lessons More of marcus miller would be great! Your video on Run for Cover was really helpfull.
TalkingBass - Online Bass Lessons Snarky Puppy too. Great basslines by Michael League and very few tutorials on youtube...
I bet you could do a great job of the intro to N.I.B by Black Sabbath. It would be appropriate here as Geezer is usually all over the Pentatonic. Or anything you might favor by B.S.

I love your lessons and I’m no beginner but I always get something by watching your videos.
There's plenty there to practice with. I still don't think I will ever be that fast, but I can still enjoy it. 😊
Sir, am most grateful for these major and minor pentatonic position exercise, cos it as increase my skills and speed on the entire fret board.
I'd like to add my thanks, Mark, as you're teaching style and format fit my learning style better than any other online bass instructor.
You're a great teacher
This lesson provides essential information for any bass player, regardless of style or genre. Don't forget to emphasize how important it is to land on the "one" after playing these fills.
Thankyou Mark! Really appreciate all your bass lessons. It's definitely making me a lot better. God bless ☝️🙏🫵

Great lesson, been struggling on how to expend the pentatonic. Many thanks, sir... You're the best teacher ever
This is so good. Thank you. This video is like 10 lessons, so much info.

Just love any Paul McCarthy bass lines. Thanks for your great lessons.

Thanks for your tutorials I learned more from you than anyone else
Wow, Chris, this is a hugely useful lesson! I'm working on this and it's really helping me "see" the fretboard better all the way up and down the neck. Wish I'd thought about it this way years ago. Thanks!
Man this was great. I really think this helped me connect the bridge in a way I never have seen it. This video is gold.
Thanks, very good, great teacher.
Great lesson.

My hand is NUMB,, 😊
But I can't stop smiling ,
THIS,, should keep me busy for a WHILE.. but it will get my hand and fingers " wired" together..great stuff.
you're making us work Mark
Hello TB, So each "shape" is specific to a certain part of the fret board? Thank you.
I was thinking maybe you could some of the Grand Funk Railroad stuff: Sin's A Good Man's Brother, or Paranoid, or any other GFR riff. Your lessons are top-notch as usual. Tremendously helpful!
help me with all the note of the bass
The only word I can find for this lesson is "Excellent".
This is a really good thing to learn
Would love to see bands like Little Feat and the Meters covered
The one thing I'm curious about is the numbering of the positional system. Why is position 1 from the rt. 5 A string position and not the rt. 6 E string position? Simply arbitrary?

Anything by Yes or The Who please Mark!
Cliff Burton Bass Solo or Orion may be an interesting one.
Good idea
So why do you need all the positions? What use are they?
You can use these for soloing
@@cdool2223 I get that you can use the pentatonic scale for soloing but why do you need all the positions?
@@gertyx with all the positions it makes the solo more interesting and just better in general, moving up the whole fretboard
Am i off bass to hope for some Jackson 5? I’m still pretty much a noob at bass
Arthur Norcome Some GREAT Jacksons bass lines. Even though they are famous and singable, both I Want You Back and Blame It On The Boogie have tricky basslines with syncopated 16th notes. Getting the actual notes under the fingers is only the start.
Love your channel :) Some funny different bands with some interesting bass could be something like Tame Impala or Glass Animals

I was thinking more riffs, not complete songs. I ran through a load of Purple stuff yesterday. Stormbringer, Speed King and Black Night will all be in there.
