The first few lessons are not too exciting. Once you have the basics, and skills, you will get flights like this and MUCH better. I strongly recomend learning. It truly is the most fun sport ever!

Ah the memories come flooding back! Nice work, both flying and video wise, many congrats on your progress. Take it from one who first flew a Manta 17’ standard in Oct. 1974, the thrills keep on coming! I had a string of kites after that one, Mirage, ASG-21, Nimbus, Raven, Demon....... Since I live 15 minutes from McClure, the hook might just be set again!

You cannot beat a falcon laugh out loud! I've had 50 mile plus Cross Country flights on a falcon! Beautiful wing

So envious of that great training hill. Had to carry my old Seagull III (yep, I’m old) back up the training hill at Boomer,NC, about 1/3 the height of this site. It sucked

Awesome videos. I enjoyed watching them. Brings back memories. Thanks for posting them. I bought a Flight Design Lancer 180 back in 1979/80. Took basic lesson I was a natural. I flew for over 10 yrs. as a basic hg pilot. I never pursued the intermediate and advanced lessons to get the proper hang ratings. My instructor got killed 2 months after I finished the course. He crashed after the wings buckled in the Pterodactyl ultra-lite he was flying. Watching these videos online make me want to do it ALL again. I miss it. I'm retiring this month so I'll have time. WOOOHOOO :{)Great job. Be safe & have fun.

Could you post their contact information? I'm very much fascinated to hang gliding, want to give it a try, looking for a good but affordable school.

This is at "Sled Heaven," right? (Ed Levin)
And my 2 cents on the comment of the that wasn't an "aggressive" flare, it was just too early. Wasn't slowed enough to be close to stall. The "didn't commit" part was not pushing forward and up - and staying there. Perhaps a higher grip on the down-tubes would have made it possible to push his body back farther, and get the nose up higher. But hey - I can't count the number of times I didn't flare at just the right time.
And the guy at 3:45 could have gone higher on the tubes, too. a LOT higher. Talk to your friends about that, and "kicking the keel with your feet" when you flare. It's all about getting your weight as far back as you can, creating a splendid rotation to upright, then landing like you owned it.

If you had held that flare in the first flight, you would have just parachuted right down on the bullseye. I got my H1 in 1986 in AZ. In '89 was an H4 and a certified USHGA instructor.

I'm not being critical but is it common for students in the mountains to be flying with no wheels before they get H2, fly prone, or land in thermic conditions? Safer to wait at launch I imagine without the wheels, easier to keep the glider still with the control frame on the ground. Still though seems a bit odd? Or isn't it?

    • @hgpilott

Entelin. They will soon learn how to flare 😉
