Just pulled mine out and it still runs like a champ. The batteries still hold a really good charge as well. Moving all my tapes over to disc for Archiving.
Boy does this take me back. I now shoot with a Blackmagic Pocket Cinama 6k, having gone through Panasonic GH4 and 5. These dv tape cams were wonderful at the time. Thanks for the memories.
Dang my parents have hundreds of cassettes for this thing. Found the camera in the attic and the touch screen completely stopped working. Tried resetting, still nothing. We really wanna see those old videos! :(
You can connect this cam to an external source like Final Cut Pro or Premiere Pro and when you do so it’ll allow you to control the cam through the program and bypass the cameras touch screen controls.
On the problem with the tape compartment, the way those work is they're supposed to reverse the gearing ever so slightly to catch where it's supposed to lock in when you push it closed. Sometimes it doesn't go back properly to that position. Resetting it is easy, but getting to the motor so you can reset it is a pain in the ass (I've had the same problem on my DV and DVCPRO cameras).
th-cam.com/video/9eK3QEyKlAI/w-d-xo.html There's some reference as to what goes on. As for where the camcorder experiences a problem, it could realistically be anything from a bad timer chip to a misplaced eject signal (janky microswitch), usually you can tell which by how frequently the problem occurrs. Often, I've had luck just resetting the position of the tape mechanism and letting the camera run through one or two eject cycles, but your mileage will vary. Also keep in mind that some cameras are much more difficult to disassemble than others (the tape mechanism I demonstrated on here was out of a Sony DCR-TRV27 that had some of its mylar flex completely destroyed).
Very interesting video! I've always been daunted by how complex the tape deck on these cameras seem to be, but that video makes understanding that much easier. The DCR-HC28 hasn't done it since, but I've had similar problems in a CCD-TRV65 and a DCR-TRV20. I'll give this a look at these again to see if there's much to do with this.
I think the TRV65 does the slight reverse as well, but I know the TRV20 does for sure. If you don't have a variable power supply, a 9V battery will work, but you'll have to be quick with it to avoid snapping any of those plastic gears (they're almost comically fragile and I've made that mistake a few times).
Hi! I have exactly the same problem with the cassette, it doesn't stay closed. So now, it's the camera opened and I can't close it! Do you know maybe how can I fix this? Thank you.
Unfortunately, I have yet to figure out what's causing the problem, but I guess repeatedly closing it until it latches seems to be the going temporary fix xD

I'm facing two major issues with my father's DCR-HC36 right now... The charging is not working properly... Don't know if it is a battery problem or a charger problem... I have an InfoLithium P series battery... And the second thing is the viewfinder is not working properly... It's covered with white areas...
is the camera supposed to hold the date and time in memory. I have to re set the time and date every time I turn it on. I have it for some years now and works well the only problem is I can not transfer the recorded video to the laptop,
The camera has a built-in rechargeable battery that's meant for keeping the date and time. Typically, that battery can die if the camera isn't plugged into charging for about three months, however, after long-term use, the battery can die on its own. Sony doesn't exactly provide any decent information on how to replace these, or if they're replaceable at all (older camcorders would use "button" style batteries, but these units aren't specified to use those). The camera may keep the date and time if the infolithium battery you're using retains a decent charge though (could be wrong about that).

Hi just wondering does this type of camcorder need cassette tape to record video? I'm looking to buy Sony DCR-HC42E and they have both cassette tape and memory stick duo. But I'm still not sure whether these types of camcorder need cassette tape to record video, will it be possible to record video with just memory stick? thank you
If it's like the other hybrid Sony Handycams I've tested, you should be able to record to the memory stick without a cassette inserted. However, the memory stick recordings on the older hybrid models have substantially lower video and audio quality (I have a video of such quality on my channel), something to be aware of.
Hi! i found this camera in my garage. But now i'm wondering what solution do you use to get those videos on your computer? It would be a big help for me if you could explain it, thanks!

I have one my father used before he passed away and I think there may be footage on it, however I can get it to turn on even though it says battery full. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
It could be as simple as the power switch being finnicky or as complicated as degrading of internal circuitry, it's hard to say. The good news is, if there is video on it, you can perform surgery to remove the MiniDV cassette if need be.
is there a reason why my camera battery doesn’t last very long when i’ve charged it the whole night? or is it something i can fix with a new battery like series h?
