    This video saved my engine. I did this can 3 months ago and it showed -4.9, I drove it while saving up for a new chain. I started hearing a rattle and I finally replaced the chain this past 3 days. My timing chain cover had scratch and cut marks from the chain. I replaced with new cover everything sealed tight. My car now drives smoother and the rattle is gone and the obd11 value is -0.58

      When did you hear the rattle? I'm hearing a rattle briefly when it shifts gears to the next higher gear. Not as noticeable if I'm on the accelerator more heavily.

    • @ithinkilikecars

      I was hearing rattle on idle, but slight internal rattle. what you are hearing could also be the turbo waste gate rattle which i also have currently on my scirocco. Try rev up to 3000 in neutral and if you hear the rattle then it could be the turbo waste gate

    The timing chain slip occurs when a worn out and shifted under tension chain lands at a wrong tooth. The crankshaft pulley has 42 teeth, 360deg/42 = 8.57deg - angular distance between any two crankshaft teeth. So, the critical point for crankshaft slip is 8.57/2 = 4.28deg. But this is the shift between the crankshaft and chain landing at the teeth.
    This application measures the total phase error between the crankshaft and camshaft, and the camshaft will have its own phase shift added to the total measured phase value: 360/46teeth/2 = 3.91deg. So, the critical measured phase angle is: 4.28 + 3.91 = 8.19deg. - this is the tripping point at which your chain is guaranteed to slip.

    2013 VW GLI DSG, the first car we ever bought new. CBFA has 209k miles now. Common wear items replaced. Brakes, tires, broken suspension springs, and 1 wheel bearing. In the engine bay, I've only changed a water pump, the cooling fans, oil pressure sensor, plugs, coils, and a few cheap amazon PCV assemblies. OEM battery lasted almost 9 years, Still original turbo as well! I am at -7.? on OBD11. Only codes are for the intake flapper occasionally, runs great. I was just quoted $7k plus for chain service at local dealer. Ummm, no! This is why I do all the work I can myself in my driveaway, no garage. Gathering parts now to do this myself over the coming weeks. I've run Walmart Supertech full synthetic oil since maybe 80k miles. I have a noticeable oil leak, assuming lower timing cover. So it gets newer oil added pretty regularly! Its my work car now, but, I still love it! I plan on this being my 14 yr olds first car. I am making sure it will make it for her. It's no show car, but for being in the Northeast it's whole life, it still cleans up pretty good! These type of videos really help me keep it going! Thanks guys!!

    This is such nonsense by VAG. How did they manage to eff up the chain system on this engine *so* badly? First there's the moronic earlier chain tensioner with a thin metal strap that is essentially a time bomb they somehow thought was a good idea; then this "chain stretch" nonsense? One of major reasons for chains v. belts is that they're supposed to be more reliable and much longer lasting. The "cost" for using a chain instead of a belt is more noise, not a bunch of issues. *Somehow* they've managed to make an engine with a chain that has absolutely no benefit over a belt, has more chance of catastrophic failure, more paranoia, and more things to worry about! Basically the entire opposite of the peace of mind a chain is *supposed* to give. Way to go Audi!
    They really ought to be accountable for this and give some kind of warranty extension of this nonsense chain design. It's pretty ridiculous to have to worry about a chain and tensioner that has the capability of destroying your engine which will cost several thousand to repair if it happens, all because they screwed this up so bad.

    • @turboshottho
      @turboshottho 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Regardless of the material, chain or belt, neither of them are lifelong. They will need to be serviced at some point. A belt could probably fail more catastrophically since it's a sudden failure vs. a gradual wearing out of the chain.

      Chain can fail out of nowhere. I sell these cars and a customers tensioner presumably failed a few months after they purchased. No symptoms, no warning, just driving down the road and car shuts off.. this design is an absolute disgrace and ticking time bomb. It costs half the cars value to rebuilt the head. What a joke, Audi should fix all these no questions asked!

      @@hgas9631 Absolutely true. I've been working in a VAG and Volvo specialist shop since 08, and I've seen more catastrophic failures on EA888s than every other engine put together. (well, the 03-04 3.0 Audi V6 comes close)
      Latest ea888 failure wasn't even timing chain, tensioner or cam bridge related. The oil check valve for the cyl head somehow jammed itself (no debris, just the valve stuck sideways in the housing) and starved the cam journals for oil, and the intake camshaft seized in the head!

Is there some other place, or some other name to look for it....or some other way to do the reset......the engine starts immediately(it had the typical stretched chain lag before chain replacement), and the adaptation value is way under 5%,....but its running very rough.....appreciate any help you can offer....thanks!

    Do the +/-5.00 values apply to TFSI engines as well, or just the TSI? If they only apply to the TSI, are there known values for the TFSI? Also curious as to whether those values are of concern in the absence of any other indicators of chain wear. I was under the impression a chain, unlike a belt, will give some obvious signs of wear and imminent failure (e.g., noisy, misfires, and ultimately DTCs and/or MIL illumination).

    I did my Chain/Tensioners last fall (2014 CC/2.0 /M6/117k Mi). My chain was stretched a solid link and half . Wit that timing correction, the motor ran so much better. Next interval will be 90k if I still have it. I do have other 2.0's that I will certainly replace sooner.
    Question for those who know...is the 1.8 essentially the 2.0 just smaller disp? Should I be looking at Chain replacement on that as well (2014 Jetta 1.8/80k). From the outside they look identical, I have not had to open it up for anything yet. thx

    Is the extension distance of the tensioner any indication? My 2009 A3 is apart, in my garage, getting a new timing chain as I write this. With he old chain/tensioner/guides the tensioner was nearly fully extended. With the new parts, it's only out about two notches. It seems the chain stretch is part of the reason for chain noise, the other part being worn guides. ~130,000 miles.
