We have a couple of paved bike trails where I live, totaling less than 20 miles. There was a review of the trails, and in the comments section someone wrote that he didn’t think that e-bikes should be allowed on the trails. I thought it was interesting that he didn’t give any justification for his stance. When I ride my folding e-bike, my average speed is 8-12mph. If people are worried about e-bikers terrorizing non-electrified bikes with breakneck speeds, they should post some speed limit signs on the trails. These would apply to all riders, including the ones in spandex.

@@WanderingAroundAZ I am an avid cyclist and I do wear spandex. Cyclists who are disrespectful on greenways and paths are pet peeve of mine. I hate that. They do terrorize people. They worry about going fast, they cut people off, they squeeze between walkers, they come way too close to kids and dogs,...if they are worried about PRs and keeping a target heart rate, they need to be on a road and not a path. Don't even get me started on groups that ride on paths and then riders will do stupid stuff and endanger people to try to keep up with their group.

@@WanderingAroundAZ Yes! In my area the speed limit is 10 MPH, Even runners break this limit going down hills. But the only ones going fast around children and strollers are the "Spandex racers". Even the teen boy riding gangs are more careful around small children.

I'm in Washington state. We have speed limits posted on our trails, typically 15mph. I do not see many eBikes on the trails, but when I do, they are usually traveling well over the speed limit, at or near the 20mph capability. I do not appreciate them creating unnecessary passing situations when I am with a group of riders obeying the speed limit. But in fairness, I will say the same about speeding non-motorized bike riders, which are not rare.

My wife and I are both in our upper sixties. Just last year we decided to change our winter home from Tampa Florida to Tucson Arizona. We both suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. I myself used to be a runner and due to my debilitating disease can no longer run. While in Tucson last year we bought Ebikes and fell in love with the Loop! Tucson is an amazing city in such that in has designated bike lanes on nearly every road.
Sounds fantastic doesnt it? However, we encumbered two(2) major problems. #1: Ungodly amount of traffic!! You take your chances when crossing any major intersection. And it is compounded by CV19 road rebels. #2: Due to extreme heat in Arizona in the summer, the asphalt pavement expands and heaves. Over time if the roads aren’t repaired they are literally a bitch to ride a straight line on. I myself had an accident on Tucson and First streets due to a large heave on the designated bike lane, lost control and went airborne into a cement wall. Thankfully I was wearing a bike helmet. I went to the emergency room for possible concussion and multiple lacerations. My wife was furious that I had ridden a public road( since we both had earlier discussed the hazards of riding public roads).
Look, I am not as agile as I used to be but, an ebike enables my wife and I the ability to get out and explore the community. The Loop is perfect for all of us senior citizens to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The loop is fantastic since it constantly repaired for any imperfections. And absolutely no traffic with vehicles.

Same with the hate in Germany at the beginning of the European "eBike" hype (approx. 2008-2012)-These haters life in their "competition" bubble and every ride is a competition, a race and YOU BASTARD are CHEATING, let them look slow, let their balls of steel shrink. It cannot be that an old woman is driving faster then they!
Then they make "fun" of eBikers - "Only disabled or worthless obese people drive eBikes"
Then they argued with "While they do not buy a motorbikes? - It's cheaper (a 40year old broken one) vs a brand new luxury eBike" - Saying that these eBikers are dumb paying so much money for something useless.
Then the argued with the legal limitation (not knowing that these support up to 16mph doesn't mean that you are not allowed to drive faster "without support"): " 25kmh I (A real man with balls of steel) drive faster (even uphill in the Alps (for US Rocky Mountains)) - Sure I do the Tour de France everymorning before breakfast.
After the first MTB-Ebikes came out - " They steal our trails" (buhu) - If you cannot go downhill with own power you are nothing (Here we have the competiton bubble again).
      etc..
Nowadays these hate Bikers are driving eBikes by themself.
With eBikes I mean the EU version of Class1 eBikes (here called Pedelecs) - Only pedal assist (no throttle) support and support only up to 25kmh (16-17mph?) - These are by law "Bicycles" while Throttles and faster speed support makes them by law to "small motor bikes" where you need a drivers licence, are not allowed to drive on bike lanes, in the forrest and need a licence plate (with insurance).

The few that I have talked to here in Colorado think that the trails belong to them (the road bike riders). They literally all said that walkers and e-bike riders need to stay off the trails as those are their "training" paths. I asked how they can say that when the trails were paid for with everyone's tax dollars, and, BTW, there is a strict 15 mph speed limit on all trails. The answer was that the speed limits don't apply to road bikes, and other users should walk on the dirt beside the trails. I am not kidding. This is actually the mentality.

The other 95 are going to alcoholics and reckless drivers that lost their driver's license or people that don't want to go through the hassle and expense of getting a motorcycle license and paying insurance, registration, and inspections and so get electric mopeds often converted to motorcycle speeds to use in parks and bike paths and the like, some going as high as 75mph with pedals that only exist for show.

To the extent that we have to give certain activities up, unless we can find something to assist us, a cane, or a golf cart comes to mind. How about becoming too old to ride a regular bike? Pedal assist provides the necessary support for an aged person to ride when otherwise unable. Documentation? How about a driver's licence showing the age of the rider?

This is also is a Paved trail, with park benches, repair stations, restrooms, and water stops that almost circles the entire city. IT currently allows E-bikes, bicycles, joggers, horseback riders, and is about 75 miles in length. It is a beautiful nature tour that crosses dozens of bridges, the Ohio River, forest, and thru the city as well.

This is what I wrote in the The Loop Feedback site
"Hi I am from Australia. I'm Australia we use the European standard EN15194. This means we don't discriminate legitimate ebikes from regular bikes. This similar to your category 1.
As someone in the older demographic who rides ebikes and in the older age group (60+) my wife and I love to travel to places which are bike friendly. Vancouver so far has been our favorite.
As soon as the covid restrictions lift we plan to go full tilt and start exploring the world again and The Loop in Tucson had been on the short list. The fact that you have decided to go against the world wide trend in ebikes shows either total ignorance or a total lack of understanding in how an ebikes work (especially Category 1).
I don't know if Tucson cares about tourists but taking away the main attraction (to me anyway) means it will affect our travel decisions."

Yeah I used to consider ebike riding to be cheating but I got one and they are fun to ride. I understand the wanting to ban them sentiment because my ebike is three times heavier than my regular bikes and if I was careless and ran into a pedestrian or another bike it could be more damaging than a regular bike. If the Tucson trail people made their decision based on ebike accident data then I would want to see the data. If they didn’t make the decision based on some kind of accident data then I would be against the decision.

Let's hope they get their head out of their 'you know what' and find a better way to address whatever abuse they felt was occurring that precipitated such a draconian decision. Seriously, forcing hundreds, if not thousands, of older and responsible adults, who are once again enjoying bike riding and exercise because of e-bikes, to leave the safety of a wonderfully constructed 131 mile paved trail, something for Tucson to be proud of, to ride their bikes on city streets with vehicles and seriously risk injury or, worse, death is appalling. Brad Wenstrup from Ohio's 2nd District to find out if any federal funds was used to build this trail.I hope the trail management makes a change to this and allow e-bikers to ride this trail. Why? My theory, considering the other electric devices listed in the ban, (hoverboards, electric skateboards et al) is that someone assumed that ebikes fall within the same demographic. Perhaps someone (a bicycle purist perhaps) pointed out that the other devices are used mostly by young people who tend to be discourteous and not follow rules? Someone may even have cited some ads showing ebikes being used in "racy" ways by young people, or even youtube vids showing how to mod ebikes to go faster than the law allows.
Like many ebike users, I'm an older person (63) with some physical limitations. My ebike has me out exercising to a degree I haven't done in over 5 years. The most precarious positions I have been in have been when people on conventional bikes have been going too fast for the trail conditions and either passed me without giving the "on your left" cue, or came around a corner toward me and both of us had to swerve to avoid a collision.
BTW, I love your channel. You have some of the most balanced and informative videos on ebikes.

I can ride my 12 speed Schwinn much faster than the 15 MPH top speed of the ebike, I just can't no longer ride very far especially in the heat. Taking a long leisure ride at around 8-10 MPH to conserve battery power is what I do. While I agree with the overall sentiments of your message, I want to clarify that there is no violation of HIPAA laws. This term gets misused a lot - especially by folks who are anti-proof of vaccination. HIPAA is to protect your private information within a healthcare setting, insurance records etc:
“An Act To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1996 to improve portability and continuity of health insurance coverage in the group and individual markets, to combat waste, fraud, and abuse in health insurance and health care delivery, to promote the use of medical savings accounts, to improve access to long-term care services and coverage, to simplify the administration of health insurance, and for other purposes.”
You say that you “can’t prove“ your limited stamina; however It should be a fairly easy thing to ask your healthcare provider for a note citing age, exercise limitations, etc. They can just scribble something on a prescription pad for you.
I think this is a case of hot-dogging jerks ruining it for everyone. The authorities probably don’t care of an old person cycles slowly on an Ebike. (At 75 and 80, my husband and I can get away with a lot of things we couldn’t have 50 yrs ago!) So what they should be legislating is for restricted speed and common courtesy.

      Actually, no.

You have to have a form of I.D. or Driver's License stating a health exception, & that is after your, "health exception", has been reviewed & approved by the state, as a justified exception.
Then some states, like California, Washington, Oregon, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, NY, & some others... have laws that if you are granted a health exception... you cannot ride an E-bike without documentation.
If you do, you can be arrested, fined, or both... & numerous violations can result in you loosing your E-bike privileges.

It may not be “official“, in the sense that it wouldn’t be accepted if I were applying for a handicapped placard or somesuch - that would require an official form. But it generally will smooth the wheels in a case like this. And as I said, at 75, I can get away with a lot of things that I could not have earlier in my life. I look like someone who needs an ADA exemption (like when I’ was gasping for air on our camping trip to the Colorado Rockies two weeks ago). I can hit over 40 mph on my mountain bike, on flat level terrain, & a lot faster on a down hill... yet federal & state politicians want to put heavy regulations on E-bikes doing 20 mph.
The states I've mentioned are now pushing legislation to make it law, that people will have to register & insure E-bikes, since they are considered motor vehicles... which will then require a Class M driver's license for you to ride, & a license plate.

Thanks for the heads up on this, I added my 2 cents on their feedback form, I tried to keep it as positive sounding as possible:
I just heard about this fantastic place to ride and then I learn that ebikes are restricted, banned, not allowed, I do not understand why. Ebikes are safe, they are quiet, it gives people the ability to ride who might not otherwise not be able to ride, I'm 55 years old and just got an ebike, I used to ride 10-20 miles everyday, I stopped riding when I moved to a community with unpaved mountain roads that made it risky for me to ride, it wasn't a matter of IF I fell, it was a matter of WHEN I fell. It's been nearly 15 years since I've ridden a bike, my new fat tire ebike gives me the ability to ride once again in my neighborhood where I live.
More and more people and families are getting and riding ebikes, for fun (recreation) as well as health reasons. The law considers class 1 and 2 ebikes in the same category as bicycles.
A place like The Loop would be an attractive destination for me as I'm sure it would be for many other people who ride ebikes, please reconsider your rule against ebikes on your beautiful trail. This would bring in revenue and tax dollars to your city, sounds like a win-win situation to me.
Thank you for your consideration on this matter.
    Sincerely

My brother bought 3 e-bikes, as a retiree. He was hoping he could get all 3 of us, over 55 unfit brothers and sister, to get outdoors, away from iPads and TVs to get some exercise and spend quality time together. I just sent a TH-cam about this Loop to him because I have not been willing to ride on roads with cars. I don’t want to risk being hit by a car and ruin my retirement. He would qualify to ride his e bike because he has 2 knee replacements, I guess, because the rules appear to specify during rehabilitation only. We have to wait, and keep looking.

Great video, and this is absolutely ridiculous. I ride an escooter and my wife an ebike, and we frequently frequent the bike trails in my area. While my scooter is capable of 30 mph, I never exceed 15 mph on a trail and most typically ride 12 or 13 mph. "normal" bikes ridden by young, athletic riders frequently blow by me at much higher speed than I am riding.
I can think of no valid reasons to ban pevs from trails. Yes some are capable of high speeds, but my car is capable of riding 100+ mph. By this reasoning it should be banned from all our country's roads as I can't think of a single one that allows you to drive over 100 mph. Don't ban the device, post speed limits and enforce them.

Jessica for president! Seriously though, the state of Arizona does everything possible to be not-green.
"The bottom line is Arizona likes green CASH not green vehicles."
Back in 2001 I was told by a cop that "only criminals ride scooters".
In 2002 quit my job and started a company called ScooterFaster that sold chain and sprockets for scooters sold across Arizona at places like Fry's Electronics etc. It became profitable in the second month, and I couldn't keep up with orders from just one (1) customer (a California scooter store).
In 2003 the Phoenix city council banned all "motorized play toys" from anywhere in Phoenix. This meant it was illegal for your child to follow you around the block on the sidewalk in his/her Power Wheels (R) Jeep. Imagine that bust on the evening news with the required pit maneuver to stop a three-year-old!
Eventually, this ban put me and several friends out of business.
So much for thinking it was a good time to start a green business.
Jessica should be able to beat the ticket using the Federal law which classifies bikes with pedals under 750 watts as bicycles and states that local police must comply.

The attorney explained that if they allowed e bikes then they would have to consider, individually, EVERY electric motorized device such as Segways, electric scooters, electric skateboards etc and that would be too much work.
So they decided to ban EVERYTHING that has any kind of motor with the exception of ADA devices.

As I understand it, the rules on the Chuck Huckleberry Loop are a little more nuanced. Different parts are run by different authorities. In the city itself, Tucson allows pedal assist, but not if it has a throttle. So a class 1 would be acceptable, but not a class 2.
The county bans all e-bikes of all kinds.
The other problem is that it's a recreational facility. It closes at night, like any other park. But they don't close the roads at night.
It's well situated for use as a commuting and transportation asset, and neither the city nor county are thinking in terms of moving people quickly and efficiently on the Loop. They should be thinking in terms of how to connect it seamlessly into the full bicycle system rather than as a playground destination.

You should probably be a fairly competent rider though as many people use it for walking and running. It gets busy in some parts. You are probably right here in the UK we are only allowed 250w motors and 15 mph to be honest I have no problem with that I am quite happy riding at that speed and that's after 51years on motorcycles.

I'm 54. I live 1 mile from Lake Erie in Northwest Pennsylvania and commute to and from work on a 26" folding E Bike. I also use it for short trips to the store. So far, I haven't been bothered by the local police. It probably helps that our Mayor also owns an E Bike. I have equipped my bike with a brake light and turn signals for better visibility.

Thank you for this video. I have been looking at moving to the Tucson area and now thinking twice about Tucson. I sent the Pima County an email with my thought!! Doubt their pea brained staff will have a common sense answer!

We have been snowbirding to Tucson for three years now. The last two years at a RV park with direct access to the loop! During our 2022/23 trip we had new ebikes and were told at that time pedal assist ebikes were OK, and I see that verified just now on the Tucson Loop website. eBikes were very popular on the loop - but even if they were still outlawed I would not worry too much about it due to complete lack of enforcement. During the two months we were there this year, riding on average 5 days a week, we saw Gas Powered cycles from small to medium sized, and some in groups, at least a dozen times. We could see where they had done considerable damage to the sometimes beautifully landscaped areas along the trail, like huge donuts in the sand that do not go away. The loop is wide and very well done, too bad they are not enforcing something as obvious, noisy, and damaging as these gas powered cycles.

I'm glad you made this video. I love riding bikes. I guess I won't go there ever. Sounds like a one sided decision. What a shame.

Tucson has NOTHING on Copenhagen in Denmark where at last count that I saw there were approximately 2.3 bikes to every resident of the city. People there ride bikes year round for going to work, to school, and making deliveries; there are also multistory parking garages and just for bicycles, Copenhagen officials say that there are not enough parking spaces for bicycles within the city. So the "Biking Capital of the World" in my opinion is COPENHAGEN with Amsterdam a close second.

It’s 100% illegal to have to disclose your disability as well as if your vaccinated, unless you purchase a reduced priced ticket for a ride on local transportation.

Lawmakers: Just put a speed limit on the areas that you feel sensitive towards as long as everyone is on board with it voting wise. 15 to 20 mph doesn’t seem too harsh and doable for the e-bikers on dirt paths.
