I live in Japan, so this hostility to bikers is just completely alien to me. Bikers are literally part of the driving tests here. If you don't drive in a way that convinces the test proctor that you're aware of bikers 100% of the time, they just fail you instantly. It's not even a question.
In the United States you take a drivers test once and it’s just driving around like 2 streets and there’s no culture of respecting bikers. Everyone essentially automatically hates them.
@D3faulted 1 just so you know in the UK, not Japan, we are taught to adhere to bikers and other motorists when they disobey the road laws. We are taught to not engage and leave it to traffic officers most we can do is record and report. In fact you can actually be fined if you try to tell people the law. I know as an escooterist who actually got someone fined for dangerous driving from my helmet cam footage. They were shouting at me for riding illegally clearly not being aware of thier surroundings as they hit a kirb (Know that privatly owned e scooters are illegal in the UK, but I wasn't prosecuted as I was being safe on the cycle lane). I didn't try and lecture them I just went to the police station on my scooter and presented them the video. Showed in court a few weeks later and the guy got points on his licence and a fine. I was very smug. But I think the system worked, while we were both being illegal due to how I reacted I was let off while he wasn't as he was the one being a danger

I’ve rode my bike safely for years and always encountered people throwing stuff at me and spitting on me. I finally decided to hang up riding a bicycle for good when a motorist swerved at me and caused me to dive off the edge of the road into the woods fracturing my wrist, ribs, bruised liver, and I got stuck with a $30,000 medical bill as the driver walked away completely free.
I literally had a karen encounter like that last video. She got downright nasty with me, shoved me and my bike over, and herself, fell over the bike as well while doing so. Called 911 because she got a booboo on her leg. The police showed up. An ambulance showed up. I was questioned, while she was having a self induced panic attack. The officer saw my travel cam footage and my gps for speed acknowledgement. Dismissed me, she became extremely belligerent to the officer and the paramedic because I was given the right to leave. I stayed while she started to assault the officer, and waved as the police car pulled off with her in the back seat. I still see her once and a while around the paths this happened at.
People could litterally live a lower stress lifestyle and have less panic attacks by just not creating these situation onto themselves and just worry about themselves.
When i was a kid someone strung up fishing line and nearly cut my neck, This was before E-bikes but none the less scary. We were just kid's ridding around our BMX bikes.
In my home town, we have a council estate (what we call projects in Britain) which borders a sizeable old quarry, and all the dirt bikers and ebikers used to ride down there, because it's out of the way, with mega wide roads, and leads directly to a dirt bike site. The local kids started hanging washing lines across the road at the entrance to the quarry, and seriously hurt a number of young lads, stealing their motorbikes after they'd fallen off when the washing line caught their necks. Thankfully, it's a narrow entrance so the lads were slowing down when they hit the wires, but if they'd been riding much faster they'd have been decapitated. Sadly, one young lad DID get decapitated at a local quarry a few years ago, and the council closed all these old quarries from public use.
People like to do that a lot. I had great eyesight as a kid and could sometimes see the thin steel wires stretched across the trees. Riding a bicycle off-road today would get me killed.
As a motorcycle rider, my advice when dealing with crazy four wheelers is: stop and wait for them to go away (no verbal response, just keep an eye on them and maintain your distance) or turn into another direction, but never continue alongside them. That just gives more opportunities to anger and recklessness.
Yep. Don't confront them. You're not likely to get through to them and they have about triple the weight in steel on you. And about 100 times if you're on a bicycle.

They aren’t, and they’re much more dangerous. But others think of them as motorcycles. They’re not, they’re not as dangerous. They’re in a weird twilight zone and require their own rules.
@@JH-xc1ce yeah right now ebikes are like having the benefits of both a bike and a motorcycle; but probably shouldn’t. A bike with 1000w and no limiter can easily get 30 on the flats. My onyx was getting 45 no problem, but people would scoot up on sidewalks with them, which probably they shouldn’t. I gave up my onyx though. It was too motorbikey, honestly, I want to feel like I’m pedaling, so standard ebike is plenty good for me, and going 25 as a max speed is totally sufficient.
Ride the roads you get drivers trying to push you off. Ride the sidewalks you get pedestrians harassing you. Can’t win as a biker. No reason to hate on them just cause they don’t need a license except for a certain speed.
fair enough for handicapped people to rely on motorised vehicles to get about.. however if they are traveling on a thin path used by pedestrians - then it is sensible for them to move at a moderate speed or people are in danger of being seriously hurt.. the issue of pedestrians being in danger does not go away just because the person driving the motorised vehicle is handicapped..

He wasn't wrong actually. I dont agree with his confrontational attitude but the trail did apparently prohibit motorized vehicles. E bikes use "electric MOTORS". Nobody said the trail only prohibited combustion motors. Most electric vehicles like that actually use 2 or even 4 electric motors, either 1 for each back wheel, or even 1 for every wheel. Meanwhile combustion vehicles almost exclusively use only one motor. The point is "you should have led with that", is just the woman's way of saying "well if i had realized you were handicapped I wouldn't have said anything about you breaking the rules because I'm embarrassed by your condition and would have just let you get away with it." So yea, it was the handicapped guys fault. He knew the trail prohibited motorized vehicles, and either didn't know or didn't care that his e bike had electric motors. I have no opinion on whether or not the trail should prohibit ebikes, or on whether or not exceptions should be made for the handicap, but as the rules were at the time, he was clearly breaking them. Then he posted the video to shame the only two people who dared confront him for it.

A good rule to follow is if you have an e-bike that is basically an electric motorcycle, and you are travelling a speeds that are similar to normal vehicle speeds, then just follow the same rules as other regular vehicles. If you are riding a low-powered pedalec, then follow normal bicycle rules. Some of the guys riding e-bikes in this video are idiots the way they are riding, regardless of how inappropriate the karens are.
@Lee G except what he's describing *IS* the law. Let's break down exactly what he said bit by bit: "If you have an E-bike that is basically an electric motorcycle" The US Consumer Product Safety Commission defines a motorized bicycle (such as an E-bike, but gas motors are allowed too) as a bike that generates no more then 1HP (750watts) and goes no faster than 20mph. Anything that can go faster than that isn't 'basically' a motorcycle. it *IS* a motorcycle, legally speaking. Cops can impound it if they clock you going faster than 20 and your feet aren't moving. if it's going significantly faster, they can impound it anyway and check what your output is. "And you're travelling at speeds that are similar to normal vehicle speeds" So, if you're operating your out-of-compliance E-bike like a motorcycle. Don't be a dumbass. Cops know you've de-limited the thing when you go whizzing by at traffic speed. Now you won't be worth the trouble if you're following the rules. But if you run a red, or roll up on the sidewalk where that's not allowed, or generally pose a hazard to slower foot/bike traffic, they will bust you, and they'll impound the bike. You should keep that 8kw E-MTB off the bike trails, because that's just asking for trouble.
@@andrewnorris5415 Don't think updating the law is gong to help there. They don't have the athority to regulate *off road* vehicles exactly, and the settings inside controllers that disable limiters are intended only for offroad use. didn't stop me from disabling the 15mph top speed in my TSDZ though. And the cops here REALLY, REALLY don't care. The shit I've seen done on pedal-bikes (or done myself TBH, I'm no saint) is worse than most of what's in this video, let alone the E-bikes.
The issue I have with Onyx and Monday is they accelerate very quickly and will go about 50-60 mph but they don’t come with standard safety features like blinkers or good brake lights like the mopeds of the 70s did. They are also made in California where it is DEFINITELY required to have insurance and a motorcycle license to ride them on the street but they advertise them as no license required and sell them to people that have never even ridden a 25 mph moped let alone something that goes twice that fast. They make people think if you can ride a bicycle you can ride their bike but they’re not the same thing. They’re more like an electric motorcycle that just happens to have pedals on it. Half the time the people in their advertisements aren’t even wearing helmets. Great product but very irresponsible advertising in my opinion. I think bikes like that are going to wind up getting some people in trouble or seriously injured. Always look up your state laws before purchasing and don’t buy a bike you aren’t ready for.
They are 100% low powered motorcycles, don't get it twisted. Those crappy compliance pedals are just there for show. NOBODY pedals those things. Plenty of true ebikes out there. The ones you referenced are not.

When I ride a e-bike or bike I follow motorcyle rules and stick to that... Nilly willy switching with pedestrian rules while going at high speed is sure way to get killed or end up in a wheelchair and it do not help you that you did was legal if it gets you killed...
It all depends on where you live. Where I live bicycle paths are restricted to pedal bikes. If you’re riding an ebike, you must have the motor turned off and be pedalling the bike. The sad part is that our province considers any motorized vehicle that can reach 38km/h a vehicle that needs to be licensed and insured EXCEPT ebikes. Some moped style ebikes can reach speeds of 70km/h and are designed in a way that makes them almost impossible to pedal for even a short distance - yet they’re still considered bicycles.
Yeah. Some trails specify if they allow pedal assist and if they don’t full on electric bikes. All the mountain bike trails around here are maintained by a volunteer group, so I feel like the people that maintain the trail define the vehicle… not the state.

I’m all for e-bikes, but I do get the concern over high powered e-bikes on regular bike paths. It’s true that 15mph is 15mph no matter the vehicle, but it’s pretty easy to blast up to a speed too fast for people to react in time on a narrow path. That said, being nice about it goes a long way.

@@billh.1940 Absolutely right, bicycle and electric assisted bicycles should be on multi-use trails, bike lanes and bike paths BUT when those kinds of infrastructures are not put in place to allow a cyclist to move safely, then a common sense choice must be made between risking life and limb or taking the safest possible option provided. We rent out Ebikes from our shop so people can discover what it's like to ride an electric assisted bicycle, Class 1, max speed of 24 kph, no throttle and even with these very basic Ebikes we had to restrict the riding zone to the National Monument where we operate because of close calls with motorized vehicles on public roads with bike lanes. It probably cost us $3k in rental fees and $20k in sales because our local politicians who ran on a 'green platform' didn't think that meant Ebikes and Acoustic Bikes, just TESLA cars. :( Thanks so much for supporting mom and pop businesses that are trying to do the right thing and provide a greener and more economical means of getting around. Sometimes you have to do the safest thing possible and the Karens of the World need to chill out and show some of the respect they demand from others. You have to give it to get it!
Guys in a literal electric wheelchair rolls up: "I need this because I can't walk" Silly Karen: "Well you should have lead with that" What an absolute sausage
speed is the issue.. if someone crashed into you on a thin path.. it would suddenly be unimportant to you whether or not the person driving the vehicle was handicapped..
I would've thought a 2nd opinion could see pass the ego and rage and make a good judgement, but it seems repugnant, low quality humans flock together. One could swallow one jerk, but when you encounter more than one, all affirming each other's insane viewpoints, it's insufferable and makes my blood boil.
Problem is, it's looks nothing like an electric wheelchair, it's a three wheeled aggressive looking E bike, it hauls ass just like it looks like it does and takes up the entirety of the trail unable to pass safely so if can't slow down or stop strikes other bikers on a bike path.
"You should've led with that" wow. The guy is OBVIOUSLY on an adaptive bike. For the record, as a mountain biker, MOST of us are extremely welcoming and friendly people, and would be generally more interested in his awesome machine than saying he shouldn't be on the trails. If he was on a motocross bike well then that's a different story, but geez people need to keep their opinions to themselves, especially when the person being attacked is minding their own business and not hurting anyone.
I mountain bike and do regular trail upkeep. The argument that a 190lb 50-72v surron, is the same as a mountain bike, makes me irrationally angry at this point. They ruin trails, they're too fast for bike lanes, and they're definitely not pedestrians, but they insert themselves into whatever category is convenient at the moment.
I've been riding e-bikes for over 10 years. The last couple years I've seen a huge amount of hostility from analog cyclists. I'd like to see some restraint on the part of hi-performance electric moped owners like the Onyx and Sur-Rons riding on bike paths at ridiculous speeds. It's easy to label everyone a Karen but they have reason to hate us. Please don't give them justification to ban us.
Yes I can see the other side of it sir ronster doing wheelies down the street things like a hundred people on e-bikes in a crowd like a gang going down the road that's b*******! They take over the whole Road they have no conscience. I'm not like these people. I'm afraid someday I won't be able to ride my e-bike legally anymore because of people like those and one of them is bound to die and then I can't ride my bike anymore and I don't have money for insurance and all that and I have one leg it's my only transportation and it saved my life my bike. Yes it's a cheap one eco-trick hammer but it works it's got 1300 miles. I need to change the tires and do some maintenance but I like it. The ecoatrick hammer is really big though. I just got a 20 amp hour battery and it barely barely just by millimeters fits under the seat lol. Yes I have range anxiety cuz I can't pedal. I figure that battery will go 30 miles I have two other batteries that go 20 miles so if I go to the lake 30 miles away I won't run out of energy. I bought a solar panel but it's so heavy how you going to carry it? But I'm going to try. It's a blue ETI and the box is another 15 lb so I'm going to use a mppt. To be fair, the recent trend in mountain biking has been emulating motocross and the terrain is getting destroyed already. I'd trade my modern mountain bike and trampled braided, widened trails for an old, rigid, 1980s style bike on sweet singletrack that was everywhere back then.
Some of those unregulated dual wheeled Wide Ebikes can go very fast on trails, they race them, coming up on people fast and confrontations arise. Notice they all have Helmet Cams to record their encounters, then post them or sell them.

with the one where the truck driver yelling "come here" the bicyclist was in the wrong. Red crosswalk hand for one, two, looks like there are 2 right turn lanes, thus he was going straight from the wrong lane.
He was in the cross-walk and as such was not in a lane at all, no violation. A bicyclist is not a pedestrian and is not obliged to comply with pedestrian controls signs, no violation of ARS 28-646 as it only applies to pedestrians.
@@DanaWeick He started out riding in the roadway in the rightmost of 2 turn lanes, and did a slight right before entering the crosswalk to go straight. It may not be illegal, even if there is no law saying it is illegal (a loophole in the law). It is an unsafe maneuver, similar to the truck in the right turn lane deciding to go straight while the next lane over is also a turn lane. The unsafe maneuver is illegal. Since the bicycle started out riding in the road he is supposed to obeying all traffic laws. I may have put it in the gray area had he started out on the sidewalk, but he didn't.
An ebike with a motor that drives the rear wheel is a motorized vehicle. Most bike paths do not allow motorized vehicles. A pedal assist ebike is not the same as a motor driven cycle and not capable of the speeds attainable on the rear wheel drive electric motorcycle with a throttle.
It's bikes like this onyx and the saron that genuinely try to blur the line between ebike and motorcycle, and the more you try to blur the line, the more the lines will be defined
And it won't be in our favor as riders of electric bicycles I'm expecting things to start getting stricter and more similar to how they are in Europe Why do we need a higher top speed a throttle and more power if Europeans can get by without them? Because we don't have the bicycle infrastructure that Europe does and have to stay safe against clueless drivers, as protected lanes are incredibly rare. Europeans I've met tend to comment that they thought their bike access sucked and then realized there's a whole new level of awful they didn't even imagine once they traveled here I mean, if the federal government wants to include actual bike infrastructure (as opposed to paint) in their future infrastructure plans then great. By all means make biking safer. But if the issues with Sur-ron and RCR style bikes reaches a head any legislative reaction will likely hurt the future of eco-friendly electric transport and make ebike riders less safe on the street.
@@AgentAlmost for myself, I live in the backwoods part of Arkansas, we have no bike infrastructure and I'm ok with that, the 8 miles I travel to work is nearly a straight line and is great for biking, due to health issues however, I opted to upgrade my bike to an ebike, I put a 1000w bbshd motor on it, technically a little above legal power wise, but the only times I've ever used that power is when I'm being chased by dogs, otherwise I keep it in PA 2 and cruise between 17 to 19mph, which is plenty fast enough, thankfully so far the cars I encounter give me plenty of space, and I hug the white, or if needed just get off the road for large trucks, works pretty well here, but when I see people in videos using ebikes that are on par with motorcycles and claiming they are ebikes, I can't help but feel it will sooner or later hurt the bike community via legislation
@KR I believe you are exactly right, trucks and cars should have full rights to the entire lane, personally I despise motorcyclists, atleast the ones in my area, most of them disregard the traffic laws and do whatever they want, and I get tired of having to worry about whether the idiot tailgating less than 5 feet behind me is inevitably gonna rear-end me when I have to brake for a deer or other animal (happens alot) to say the least, of the 4 times I've found motorcycles in the ditches, I have never felt any sympathy for the riders
I have to agree on this, I love the ebikes and electric motorcycles, but that line needs to be sharply defined and hard lines drawn. A 50 cc moped that tops at 35mph is no different than a ebike governed same speed and both should be subject to the same rules.
Drivers dont accept slow wehicles liked bicycles and ebikes. Bikes have to go faster or cars have to go slower. 20mph speed limit for everyone in city limits. !)
I know each country has different laws, but I find it quite remarkable that some of these bikes are basically electric motorbikes. In the UK an E-Bike has to be pedal-assist and have a maximum power output of 250 watts. Anything more powerful/non pedal assist would require the correct driving license endorsement etc
It makes no sense. Loicenses are shit anyway. There should be a dedicated ebike license. Drive your ebike like a motorbike on the road. And like a bicycle on cycling paths. Meaning you drive at a normal speed that makes sense. No strict speed limit but if there is a crossing or you see pedestrainas you slow down to walking speed. A allysway where people can jump around the corner you slow down to like 15kmh. Is it so hard to have common sense?

I'm not an American, but e-bikes are "motorized". I'm looking to buy one right now, so that's why this video is recommended to me. But whatever the legal definition in whatever state doesn't matter to me. Class 1 & 2 ebikes are allowed almost everywhere regular bikes are. Maybe there's an exception or two out there, but I travel around the country and haven't run into that, and I always look up the laws before I ride. What state bans them outright?
My ONLY problem with e-bikes OR bicycles is when riders want to be treated as regular vehicles, but don't follow the rules for vehicles (ie; acting like a pedestrian OR a vehicle at different times depending on which is most convenient at the time.... for instance, at a light, like at 10:12)
Drivers of cars and trucks can be just as aggressive to other vehicle drivers. Road rage overall seems to have increased lately. Or else it just hits the airwaves more frequently.

Here in UK, people are angry. I'm not sure exactly what they're all angry about, but it's palpable. Everyone seems on the verge of violence. All the time. What is going on?
Our governments have created a condition of poverty and discomfort and forced everyone to take a series of shots that contained bad vaccines and experimental delivery methods. We watch as the government shoves their boot up our ass and call it democracy while they clean our savings out and let criminals run free.
There's a lot more crazy people out there than there used to be, it's as if there was a global pandemic and some of the people are still in a fog, some of them are driving around in cars, so be careful and ride safe.
As a mountain biker... I would support you, in your effort to just plow through any & all Karens. Perhaps they sould make cattle catchers for E-bikes, specifically for that purpose.
Most states allow class 1 EMTB or handicap assisted EMTB on trails. Most folks in this video are not on class 1 e-bikes which is the problem. Folks riding Surrons and other versions on trails are gonna cause people following the rules to loose the access we have fought for. Truly sad this video is falsely stating these folks are in the right.
That last one was painful to watch, though I would have pulled out my phone and called the police. I don't have many encounters with karens, though there was one guy who said something as I passed his house, and I stopped to have a conversation. Turns out his problem was other kinds of bike riding past his house at 30mph on the sidewalk, and even though I was doing my usual 12mph-ish for sidewalks, he thought I was one of them. Sidewalks are 100% legal for bicycles and class 1 or 2 e-bikes in our state, and with a very un-friendly infrastructure for bikes here, you often don't have a choice. My quick answer to anyone who calls out "Non-motorized vehicles!" is to just tap the handlebars and say "Exempt", and keep on riding. If someone is ignorant, you really don't want to engage them anyways. But, there is a balance. If you are going full send on mixed use trails and ignoring common sense, then people will come against you, and they will be right. I was recently on a group ride where a police vehicle passed us driving on the wrong side of the road, pulled in front of the group, and hit his brakes. Very stupid and dangerous of the officer. He ordered us to ride to an area up the road, and spent 15 minutes on the phone with his supervisor trying to find something to charge us with. He couldn't, so he checked every bike and found the one Sur Ron without pedals, and gave him a written warning because "I have to find something to justify my stopping you". Yes, that's what the officer said. Never mind we were on a public road which was open to motorized and non-motorized vehicles, and riding in an orderly fashion below the speed limit. It pains me that this word continues to grow more divided and hostile and selfish as the days go by.
Yes, depends where you are. In CA, bicycles on sidewalks are generally prohibited by anyone over 12 years old. But it's up to the municipality if they want to amend this. Some cities will REQUIRE bicycle riding on some busy streets. But in general, children are allowed to ride bikes on sidewalks, for obvious reasons.

I live in an area with a lot of 4 way stop intersections and the vast majority of E-bikes blow right through these just like the vast majority of bicycles do.....
When I ride my e-bike or bicycle I ride it like I ride my motorcycle and follow motorcycle rules. Doing it any different will get you killed as bending the rules and think you can just ignore the rules and randomly switch between pedastrian and motocyle rules is not safe at all ... Aslo even if it might be legal to do things in traffic on a bicyle e-bike that you can not do with a motorcycle does not mean it is safe, it does not matter that what you did was legal when you are DEAD or in a wheelchair....
Yep. The freedom of a bike lends to some risky, out-of-control behavior. Then you put bad riders on ebikes going twice as fast as they should, leading to some bad accidents on the road AND on bike paths, which often double as pedestrian pathways.
I found this channel via your UBCO review. This video popped up as recommended one and I wanted to add some... discussion here. In the USA, e-bikes, especially e-MTBs, have vastly different access abilities on public land vs. on roads. There is a fundamental difference between land managed (or owned) by a transportation entity (DOT, county road, city public works) and one managed (of owned) by a recreation entity (DNR/DCR, county parks, city parks). This can result in a lot of issues for those that bring e-bikes (and especially e-MTBs) onto trails. What doesn't help is e-bike advocates pushing the idea that the federal definitions of an e-bike mean that they can go anywhere a 100% human powered bike can. In fact, many states (MA being one) and many municipalities ban motorized (yes, e-bikes have a motor) traffic of any kind on non-transportation defined trails and roadways. Typically, this includes natural surface singletrack, some wider natural surface trails and, in a few instances, paved trails. But the larger point here is that due to the USA's federated system and land management divisions, a person can't say, "Federal statue is this, so that means this or that is legal." Understanding local laws (which, again, can be different one town or property to the next) is important for e-bike riders. Most of the people yelling at e-bike riders you show in this video are jackwagons, true, but when to comes to e-bikes on recreational trails, they may not be wrong as far legality. In other videos you've mentioned that "e-bikes are allowed anywhere a normal bike is allowed" and that is only true of transportation defined roadways. Get off those onto recreational trails and the legality gets very complicated very fast. As an example of this, I live in a state with very clear, fairly liberal, e-bike rules with most land managers following the state guidance. But if my trail club got a class 2 or class 3 or that UBCO for trail work/tool carrying, we would have to go to every land manager and get a special allowance. My plea to all e-bike advocates, owners, curious individuals is this: understand the instant you cross off the right-of-way line of a road, you may not have legal access. Do your research and don't assume anything. If you can't find the information online, call or email that land manager and ask.
Bingo. Motor's a Motor, and an E-bike will tear up a trail just as easily as a gasbike will. Local city doesn' allow E-bikes on the gravel trails for that reason. But we can still use bike lanes (and even sidewalks provided we're not jerks about it).
@@biketothetop most Ebikes that are sold in the states are class 2 and 3. And most class 1's can have a throttle plugged in and deregulated with a button combo on the display. My TSDZ2 conversion kit's typical example
I get that you're explaining what *is* not necessarily what *should be*. But the idea that a 500w motor that helps me get up the hill at 8 mph is the same thing as a 1000cc dirt bike is absolutely ridiculous. I think it is much more useful to frame the discussion of class 1-3 ebikes as regular bikes. Because that's how they are used. This "but it has a motor on it!" thing is asinine.
@@NATESOR with regard to effects on the trail, that distinction is valid. up to a point, a class 2 and 3 ebike can put down 1hp and have throttles. The issue comes with telling said ebikes apart from each other. other than the multi-KW Hub motors and absolutely huge mid drives (like the 3kw Cyclones) it's pretty hard to tell them apart. So you're going to get blamed regardless if folks with bikes like mine (a class 3) use the trail and dig ruts in it because thrumb down go brrr.
I used to ride bicycles everywhere and never felt safe on the road, and would get mouthed at for using empty side walks at slow speeds. People just don't want you to bike.. but at the same time bikers are very unpredictable on the road even motorcyclists at high speeds. Sometimes I don't even see them until they are in front of me, passing me with oh sh** amounts of space between us
@vibratingstring The funny thing is how people complain about cyclists "hogging" the road, yet it's done on purpose so the cyclist don't get driven off the road by cars pushing past them when it's unsafe, which is far more likely to happen when a cyclist is hugging the roadside. By taking up more space on the road cars have to pick safer times to pass without wrecking. In my country a bicycle is considered traffic anyway so they have just as much right to use the road as any other vehicle.

@vibratingstring That also increases the chances they might get angry at you, or somebody fails to predict your path and accidentally runs you over. And I say that as a biker. Very VERY few people are willing to commit vehicular manslaughter, specially if you don't provoke them. They just have their little egos too inflated. Some might pass close to you but it's a bluff, in which case you WANT to be predictable so they don't actually hit you. Even just regular bicycle users themselves think the rules of the road don't aply to them and when those people get ahold of ebikes they make those who actually follow the rules look bad and people want to ban ebikes because of irresponsible riders, yet don't seem to consider even on a regular bicycle the same people would still NOT follow the rules.
@tettazwo9865 imagine being seen as weird for being safe by following rules and laws 😂 then people wonder why so many accidents happen regarding bicycles. Motorcycle drivers are just as bad swerving in and out of lanes and cutting through traffic
There is another way of dealing with Karens and -- what? Kyles? -- which I've used for 40 years to great effect. It requres iron self-control, but always leaves the Karen bewildered and baffled. When confronted with one of these enraged busybodies, simply face her/him squarely, and stare into her/his eyes as though you do not understand whichever language she/he is speaking. Over time I found that I could punctuate my passivity with a very subtle inclination of the head with slight elevation of one eyebrow, but nothing more. Do not flinch or smirk, just stare, and stare for as long as it takes for her/him to wither up and go away. It carries the advantage that you give her/him no pretext to physically attack. This technique is especially good if you have a young child with you. I did this about 25 years ago when a slightly drunk and sour-looking Karen was yelling at my 7 year old son for running around a motel parking lot letting off steam after a long car ride. I talked with him afterward about the value of always maintaining self-control and decorum, and now, at the age of 33, he is a supremely calm and confident man.
I ride an ebike, and I think we have a responsibility to be careful around other people, especially on bike paths. My bike with me on it, is basically 300 pounds of mass rolling down the path. Slow way down when approaching or passing others. I can see why other people are a little annoyed with these things.
I'm 280 so me on a regular mountain bike is basically 300 pounds of mass rolling down the path 🤣 We all have a responsibility to make sure our actions aren't endangering others but some people want to feel endangered so they can complain.
This should be the attitude everyone has here. Unfortunately this seems like an ebike echo chamber channel. Honestly these things are motorized bikes masquerading as pedal bikes, the laws are really relaxed when these happen to be throttled by pedals and not a lever. Until regulations catch up it's in all riders interests to keep passing speeds respectful and remain visible. Have to remember we are pattern-trained to expect a bike shaped object to only move a certain speed, your ebike passing ass is gonna be a highly invisible object to most people who clock you from a distance.
I like your attitude! And I like e-bikes, especially for older people and folks with limitations. But on the bike/walk paths I run across far more e-bike jerks than Karens. My town's great shared paths are full of newbie e-bikers without good bike handling skills on 750+ watt heavy e-fat bikes riding 25+ mph without consideration for others. They're dangerous for all and give e-bikes a bad name.

That's the problem ignorant have. Roads don't belong to one type of vehicle and individual. You have to share it 2ith other user without hierarchy. It's not yours. Cyclists have recently been given More legal protection in the UK, basically making motorists responsible for ensuring the cyclist is protected and giving bicycles and ebikes a "vulnerable road user" status. Endangering a cyclist is now a legal offense with fines and licence points applicable. With up to 6 points for an offence, with a driving ban at 9...
It all depends on your local city ordinances doesn't it? Where I am it has to be a class 2 bike and max speed setting not above 20 MPH in order to have the same legal rights as regular bicycles. As an avid e-bike rider, I try extra hard to be considerate on pedestrian trails and use my peddles often when passing. I don't travel in lanes with auto traffic and I think doing so inevitably leads to confrontations.
some of this is brought on by the e bike riders changing from road to sidewalks. where i live if you are on AMY bike you have the rights and responsibility's of a vehicle which means you are not suppose to be on the sidewalks. Drivers get stressed when they have to anticipate where you are going to cross an intersection so dont be surprised when you get honked at running a bike(e or pedaled) thru a crosswalk. I love riding my ebike but when riders blur the lines by acting like a car at one point and then a pedestrian a moment later it will cause friction. Do it to much and people will ask for and get rules to limit us even more. There will always be karens lets just not give them anything legitimate to go on about
5:26 I figured this one out. The right two lanes were for turning and the far left for going straight. The ebike rider was in the far right and went straight. Rider was in the wrong lane for his action. IF they felt unsafe navigating the intersection they should have dismounted and used the crosswalk when permitted, otherwise they should have moved two lanes over.
Yeah that’s something I see near the beach a lot. Some people like to go ‘vehicle rules, pedestrian rules, vehicle rules’ when it suits them. Gotta pick one and stick with it.
Also it's hard to see the cross walk has the red hand . Not sure if the law at that location but in my area a red hand us the same as a red light and if a cop wants he could give a ticket for that
If this is a recurrent issue, maybe you should question your own behavior. Sometimes people are right. Most of people (including Karen) don’t care of e-bike … except if they perceive the rider’s conduct as a threat. Like going too fast, too close… even if you’re a true pilot, people don’t know you and don’t know your intentions. I’m not saying you’re always wrong, but we all make mistakes. So, assuming they are all hating e-bike without even trying to understand them is probably not helpful.
I'm a cyclist and honestly these mopeds with pedals need to be stopped from using pavement or cycle lanes. They are mopeds that do moped speeds that weigh moped weights and it's a loophole that will be closed soon. Thankfully here in the UK E bikes are heavily restricted in speed but most people de-restrict them and most sellers are willing to sell illegal e bikes. I look forward to the fines being so big it stops. Don't get me wrong I really love e bikes and I want one but they must be restricted to below 30mph and under a certain weight to stop these loophole engineers making mopeds with pedals. It WILL ruin it for the rest of us.
@npc 117: whilst golden retrievers, like all dogs, have a very good hearing. Dog owners don’t have to scream on them. Either they listen to the leader, or he/ her is not the leader…
@@colinryshaf3295 That's a very Karen-like response. I'll respond with a quote from Stephen Fry: “It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so what."
Nothing justifies the reaction of the driver in the second video BUT ! the e-bike , brushed a column of cars at 30+mph in front of a roadworks with two way traffic on a single lane, enforced by temporary traffic lights , he never gave a hint of stopping pedalling or slowing down , that was downright reckless (and enjoyed the thrill of it ) putting himself and others in danger .Passing vehicles stopped in lane is legal only when it's safe to do so and i really can't see of any law enforcer would see that as "safe" , especially on a e-bike that even seems illegal over there ( in UK e-bikes can go up to 15.5mph or 250w , above that you have L1e-B "mopeds" that needs to be registered, taxed, insured ,tested and you need to wear an helmet) .
I'm not really an ebike fan but I'm not opposed to people using them on the trails as long as they aren't unreasonably powerful. 250w or less should really be the limit on pedestrian paths. That's the typical output of a road bike enthusiast. People flying down walking paths at 30mph does irritate me.

Thanks for pulling these together. As an ebike enthusiast for 10 years now, it's been really interesting (albeit unfortunate) to watch tensions grow along with ebike adoption. I like the concept of a YT channel bringing visibility to these issues. Could be a good podcast topic as well. Ebikes are here to stay and people need to learn on both sides so we can all adapt safely.

Man, come to South America. Lots of bike infrastructure that rivals that of Europe. People are much more kinder and most will apologize if they make a traffic mistake. Lived in the states and glad I left. I miss the old US. This isn't America the Great, anymore. I don't know what it is.
@BOGDAN SERBAN Seems like you haven't traveled enough. Lots of American expats in my region and I don't have to deal with stray bullets or random Karens like in the states. Feel safer here than there 😂
This problem is getting worse and worse because the regulation treats groups of individuals differently instead of classifying safe and unsafe behavior.
That's because those regulations favor cars. While here in the Netherlands it's totally different. there's an order in "blame". collision between pedestrian and bicyclist > cyclist is to blame. Even if the pedestrian did not pay attention. the bicycle is more lethal. car and cyclist > car always to blame. As the car is way more lethal to anyone outside the car. you have to be aware of your surroundings. But our infrastructure is designed for cyclists as well as cars. therefore in 2019 the deaths per 100.000 was only 3.9 , while the rest of europe is about 9 deaths, and the USA 15 per 100.000 inhabitants. Also I think there is much more attention to teaching to drive. you need at least 20 lessons (40 recommended) before taking an exam.
@@iWhacko There is someone on here that shows what's wrong with most cities of the world, with America and Canada being the worst offenders, and that is that it's too car centric and planners do NOTHING for anyone else. I don't know about everywhere in the U.S., but where I'm at, e-bikes are considered motorized vehicles. So, they are not allowed on some trails. More trails are opening up to them, though. Just depends on the city/town.
Yeah, harassement's no good, but I can't blame people for thinking they were considered motor vehicles. I ride ebikes and even I would've assumed the law saw them as motorized vehicles. I mean they have a motor, right? Legally considering them the same as MTBs is stupid imo. I feel like eventually they'll just need their own distinction. It doesn't make sense to views them as analog bikes or motor vehicles. I can think of some trails a total motor ban would make sense, and plenty where ebikes wouldn't pose a problem at all. Or maybe certain trails could be off limits to certain classes of ebikes or be throttle free? Shoehorning them into existing regulations is bound to cause confusion.
In my state (Washington in the pacific northwest) electric bikes are not classed as motor vehicles if the electric motor is less than 750 watts. Above 750 watts in power they are not legal on city streets or county roads . Class 2 speeds under 20 mph are permitted on my local bike trails but motor vehicles (like gasoline or diesel internal combustion engine ones ) are prohibited. However unless one travels at high rates of speed or erratically attracts unwanted law enforcement attention riding an ebike with electric motors above 750 watts likely wouldn't be noticed unless it appears like a motorcycle style one.
That's why we gotta look up the local laws and make sure we're on the clear. And it doesn't hurt to have a copy to show any potential Karen (on the small chance they are just misinformed and not blindly hating).

Do the bikers in your country follow traffic rules? The hostility here stems from the fact that they largely don't.

Well said. Common sense approach. It's clear the law is wrong and needs updating and some are exploiting the loopholes.
Where I am bike rules and car rules, with a few exceptions, are identical.
@Lee G except what he's describing *IS* the law. Let's break down exactly what he said bit by bit:
"If you have an E-bike that is basically an electric motorcycle" The US Consumer Product Safety Commission defines a motorized bicycle (such as an E-bike, but gas motors are allowed too) as a bike that generates no more then 1HP (750watts) and goes no faster than 20mph.
I love how she thought she really had a right to block someone, even a cop needs articulable reasonable suspicion to detain and question.

When I ride a e-bike or bike I follow motorcyle rules and stick to that... Nilly willy switching with pedestrian rules while going at high speed is sure way to get killed or end up in a wheelchair and it do not help you that you did was legal if it gets you killed...
I wouldn’t even stop and debate these people. Just smile and wave.
Yes, those candian laws are something arent they. And those daymak 'ebikes' with their ebike tags are just adorable.

That's what American has become, people complaining about anything and everything. When I was a punk that used to be our motto "question everything" lol
I certainly would not have reacted like that. I probably wouldn't have said anything to the guy. I'm not oblivious and it would have been obvious he was handicapped. That said, the trail did apparently prohibit motorized vehicles. It is a sad reality that not EVERYTHING in the world can be made handicap accessible. Saying its an E bike doesn't change anything about the park rules. E bikes use electric "MOTORS". I highly doubt the rules only specifically prohibit "Motorized vehicles that run on combustible fuel, of a specific size or greater".
I have seen many of these tiny motor warriors trying to stick it to the man by using non combustion motors, or even combustion motors that fall under the legal limit requiring registration, insurance, and licensing to operate. None of that has anything to do with trails in a park. The park managers can set whatever rules they like. The rule they set was "no motors". This guy may be handicapped but I bet he can read. He got a sensational over reactions but he did it by breaking the park rules. That's not a hero fighting for the rights of the handicapped, its a anarchist creating clickbait for people who can't see beyond the surface of a situation. If anything he makes handicapped people look like a bunch of aholes who are going to shove their disability in your face and try to force you to let them do whatever they feel like, rules be damned.
@@K162KingPin But the trail didn't need to be "made" handicap accessible, because it already was, evidenced by the fact that we both just watched a video of the handicapped man accessing it.
Either way, you're very right that the rules can be set by the US Forestry Service, and guess what! They already did! And their rules state that a wheelchair or other power-driven mobility devices is allowed any where that foot traffic is allowed. Oh, and the Department of Justice has stated that mobility devices are allowed on any public accommodations (which includes public lands and any private trail that is open to the public, or any other "place of recreation") according to Titles II and III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, but just the tiniest amount of common sense and empathy would have already told you that, assuming you had any.
Can you show me on the doll where the tiny motor warriors touched you? Are the tiny motor warriors in the room with us right now?
Oh, and where did this guy ever claim to be some kind of hero fighting for the rights of the handicapped? Other than in your imagination I mean (and the amount of nonsense you decided was reality based on your imagination is actually kind of impressive). And now he's a goddamn anarchist? Do you hear yourself? That man was following every rule, but just because you are ignorant of the rules you think he's "throwing his disability in your face"? Seriously?
Thank god we had a real hero like you to stand up to that anarchist disabled man who can't stop shoving his disability in our faces by existing in a public place. Doesn't he realize that us normals go to these kinds of places specifically so we don't have to look at disgusting disabled people like him? Thank you so much, Mr FullSizeGaming for making sure he stays inside his house like his type is supposed to!

@@lorehammer40k4 You know I only read the first 7 words of that rant right? The fact remains that you are WRONG and I am RIGHT. Period end of story. The fact that a person can break the park rules and travel in an area with a prohibited vehicle does not in any way prove that it is acceptable. You "could" drive a bulldozer down the interstate but it would destroy the roads for everyone else. You "could" drive a bus through a playground but it would create an unacceptable safety hazard for the children and parents. Obviously the ability to do something does not in any way make it acceptable, especially when there are rules specifically prohibiting it.
There is no prohibition for handicapped people to use the train, or even to use human powered vehicles. The prohibition is for "motorized" vehicles which he was using. Last I knew legs not working has nothing to do with your arms. If he can have an Ebike custom made for him then he could have a hand peddle bike made. ... Right, so assuming you blew past a *GASBIKE*? Which puts out a minimum of 1,200 watts for even the cheapest motor, you would have been operating an out-of-compliance bike (which is legally a motorcycle regardless of being electric). The difference being how obvious it is. if it was a no-motorized trail, you both should have been tossed.
I get the feeling that there is trouble on both sides of this issue. People who don't like anything with a motor and people with bikes who, like kids, pay little attention to road rules.
The person with inability to walk, in his 3 wheeler, being hassled along the trail is a new low. These days, it's pressure-pressure-pressure from people just lashing out with no manners, just blatant hostility if they decide they don't like something.
The first question I would have asked that guy if I could not walk and was using a 3-wheeler is "what is your first name?" That immediately makes the lashing-out person think "wait a minute - I don't want to give this person my first name because I might be in the wrong and they might report me to staff"
If the person refuses to give you their first name, YOU GOT 'EM. They are exhibiting guilt. Get a full description of them into memory then turn them in.

A e-bike is a "motorized vehicle" in most (all) States, but there are special regulations that govern and allow them. You cannot put a motor on a bike and then call it "not a motorized vehicle" LOL 😅
In our State of Oregon, some trails do not specifically forbid e-bikes, but many trails allow bicycles but not motorized bicycles. Some trails have actually gone so far as having to explain to violators by actually posting "no e-bikes" but there are people who still violate these regulations.
And the problem is the high powered heavy e-bikes/electric motorcycles really do put walking people in danger.
Your terminology is incorrect. Most states and federally ebikes are NOT recognized as motor vehicles.

Not saying what legal terminology is. It has a motor powering it - call it what you want. It is scary that we don't jump and we don't heal as fast as we used to. We aren't looking for trouble, but entitlement that puts others at risk is more than rude.
Correct. Ev or ice is both motorized. If you don't have brakes and protection according to what effect/power can be delivered you do endanger others. But ebikes feel exceptionnel guz they don't use gas or need a license.

Found out recently that, when passing a bicycle, in Michigan it's legal to cross a double yellow if there is no oncoming traffic and you can do it safely.
Usually it is if the vehicle is an obstruction rather than another vehicle. You'd need to look at the law to find the exact criteria.
Like passing a garbage truck which is frequently stopping.
You are also legally required to give a cyclist 3 feet. If you can’t, it’s illegal to pass them.

And yes, those guys with the little overpowered speedy bikes zipping around in traffic are going to get ALL ebikes banned on trails, roads, parks (some already are doing that), and walkways. Those guys are assholes too.
Agreed on the try to not engage, absolutely on the Yahoos on Ebikes giving the rest of us a bad name but ditto for the roadie dinobike riders who like to Claim the Lane and ride 3 or even 4 abreast because they have rights too.

And it won't be in our favor as riders of electric bicycles
I'm expecting things to start getting stricter and more similar to how they are in Europe
Why do we need a higher top speed a throttle and more power if Europeans can get by without them?
Because we don't have the bicycle infrastructure that Europe does and have to stay safe against clueless drivers, as protected lanes are incredibly rare.
Europeans I've met tend to comment that they thought their bike access sucked and then realized there's a whole new level of awful they didn't even imagine once they traveled here
I mean, if the federal government wants to include actual bike infrastructure (as opposed to paint) in their future infrastructure plans then great.

My wife decided she needed to find something for me to do so she decided that renting Ebikes was the ticket, that led to Ebike sales and that led to me becoming an Ebike mechanic instead of an early retired master builder. I'm not an American, but e-bikes are "motorized". I'm looking to buy one right now, so that's why this video is recommended to me. But whatever the legal definition in whatever state doesn't matter to me. As an engineering point of view it's motorized. its heavier and carries a lot more momentum thanks to requiring a stronger frame and battery and *motor* weight. Also makes more noise.

If you call the police instead bitch slappin' that woman, you're the Karen.

And when they catch death from a T-bone crash they will serve to be a lesson in how not to operate at a 4 way intersection.

Good reason to stop and look if you drive a car
Yep. The freedom of a bike lends to some risky, out-of-control behavior. Then you put bad riders on ebikes going twice as fast as they should, leading to some bad accidents on the road AND on bike paths, which often double as pedestrian pathways.
Most e-bikes are mopeds w pedals stuck on to try and avoid regulation. They’re a menace in bike lanes, where in many jurisdictions they aren’t allowed
That's bull crap. Mopeds are mopeds. E bike is special
@@DFX2KX non-sense spoken here about tearing up a trail... a Class 1 (pedal assist, no throttle) won't do that.

I am a happy user of three e bikes and frequently ashamed of how recklessly fellow e bikers conduct themselves. Disturbing the peace in the woods is just uncalled for!

I do something similar but say "NO ENGLISSH" in a fake accent. Cause I'm brown it enrages them even more and they typically leave
running around a motel parking lot? Sounds dangerous. He was commenting such.
I ride an ebike, and I think we have a responsibility to be careful around other people, especially on bike paths. My bike with me on it, is basically 300 pounds of mass rolling down the path. Slow way down when approaching or passing others. I can see why other people are a little annoyed with these things.
I'm 280 so me on a regular mountain bike is basically 300 pounds of mass rolling down the path 🤣
We all have a responsibility to make sure our actions aren't endangering others but some people want to feel endangered so they can complain.
Only bicycles I'm like i am a bicycle with fat tire. People need to just mind there own biz and just enjoy what their doing. When i see ebikes on the trail i say Nothing...it's a bike trail for bicycles and ebikes.
Now you know what dirtbikers put up with , in the middle of nowhere
Just got an e-bike and hope I don’t come across these people. I just use the e-assist for pedaling so probably won’t have an issue. Just will throttle only when nobody around.
Yeah...I just bought an e-bike as a Christmas gift to myself a week ago and I'm hoping not to come across these people either. Like you, I'll use the e-assist for pedaling and throttle when on one is around for miles 🙃Good luck to us huh!! But in a nutshell people whom don't have the spirit of Christ in them are going to act like Karens...
Second video was pretty reckless driving. Also imagine if everyone acted like that cyclist.
I ride everyday and have only had 2 encounters with "Karens". Oddly enough they both threw rocks at me for laughing at them for trying to stop me. Since I started wearing a Gopro I haven't had any issues for some reason
Yeah I rock an insta360 x3 no one fucks with me. Right after you say I have this all on tape. All 360 around me. Oh so I'm on tape. Yes, yes you are! :) Had a lady cut me off in the road and I tapped the side of her car to say. Hey Im fucking here pay attention. She was all about calling the cops until I said. You go right ahead and do that. I have you going into the bike lane, cutting me off and then coming so close to me that you almost hit me. She got in her car and left fast...haha.
Feel safer here than there 😂
@BOGDAN SERBAN The kidnapping thing is a fairy tale that you have been told, it doesn't actually happen.
@@leplane_ Which parts of South America are you talking about? It is a BIG place for such a statement 🙂
This problem is getting worse and worse because the regulation treats groups of individuals differently instead of classifying safe and unsafe behavior.
Don't comply
What the f*** are you talking about
That's because those regulations favor cars.
@@iWhackothe US has a lot to learn from The Netherlands as far as infrastructure is concerned.
@@iWhacko There is someone on here that shows what's wrong with most cities of the world, with America and Canada being the worst offenders, and that is that it's too car centric and planners do NOTHING for anyone else. He used Netherlands as the best example of what to do and I have to say I'm impressed. I want to visit there!
Refreshing to see there are e bike riders who are not always the Karen.
The biggest mistake is trying to talk to a Karen....just ignore them and keep going.
Or act really, really worried about their concerns and over apologize explaining how logical they are. It works bettee than arguing.
FR just say "your mom should have swallowed" and wiz away :P
But then we miss out on these lovely videos of people acting like assholes
