[WARNING] Absolutely INSANE and CREEPY Moments in Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones.

  • What the EFF is with Sacred Stones?. Magvel is a perpetually gloomy and depressing continent riddled with zombies, skeletons, freaking giant spiders, GHEB. But also, its villains, and some of its playable characters, have some pretty MESSED up moments which contribute to making Sacred Stones’s generic McGuffin story into one that is memorable. This video is dedicated to those WTF moments, of which there a few. I will warn you, while its entirely fictional, some of these moments can legitimately be upsetting to some. So, yeah. I’m also not going to call a spade a spade for some of these situations simply because I don’t want this video to get demonetized. But its pretty apparent for most of these the proper word you’d use them for.

Those were great examples of why this game is one of the best! Sacred Stones is the shortest and easiest game in the series, but that's because it favors quality over quantity. The characters are all quirky, supports range from amazing to unique and little moments like these are some the most memorable in the series (great or creepy).

For real, though, it's kind of surprising how low-key and friendly the Sacred Stones protagonists are. I think the only one who's an out-and-out jerk is Rennac and he's still not in the top 10 of PC jerks in Fire Emblem 7.

Most of this is a result of what's probably the central theme of Sacred Stones: Corruption. Even more so than other Fire Emblems, Sacred Stones tells the story of a man wanting to do good, who falls to darkness for the powers he seeks. It bleeds into every sphere of the story, from the villains (all three of the "new" Grado generals are those who have fallen from grace, be it a mercenary who betrayed his old friends, a knight who fell to dark magic, or a priest who turned upon the faith), to the locations of the sacred stones (all of the places where stones are shattered or lost become halls of corruption, from the undead ruler Vigarde, to the undead wife of Orson, to the burned tragedy of Jehanna, to the monster-infested Tower of Valni), to the nations themselves (Renais, Carcino, and Jehanna are felled by traitors, and Rausten nearly suffers the same. Only Frelia escapes treachery.) Sacred Stones tells a story in which unseen darkness can turn the whole world black very quickly. Hence why it's a story rife with such treachery, filled with the walking dead, a manifestation of corrupted bodies, and settled only by being willing to cleanse what's been lost, by being willing to let go of the dream of rescuing Lyon. The only answer is to meet the monster, pay the piper, and accept the butcher's bill. Ultimately, Grado is largely doomed. The unseen corruption of the earthbound disaster Lyon foresaw was inevitable, and the only real answer was to cut losses and respond once it happened, tragically. Hence why so many characters have an arc in which they have to accept giving up on Grado, acknowledging the swift fall of a once great nation, and being willing to accept the necessary purge. And this is GRADO, the nation named for the hero most often credited for the fall of the Demon King! In taking in the Fire Emblem, the Demon King's soul, his nation accepts corruption, and eventually pays for it. The other major savior of the first War of the Stones, Morva, also falls to darkness. Very little survives The Sacred Stones. Nobody really escapes the corruption once it takes hold, and the recruits from Grado all barely make it out. It's a dark message. A step into the dark can damn you, and there's no real turning back.
Edit: Darn, editing this for more detail lost me Ghast's love. Still love ya back, buddy!

I have an inexplicable love for the Orson character. He's just so damn out-of-place with Fire Emblem villains, who for the most part come in only four flavors: Camuses, cackling nihilists, social darwinists, and dullard bandits. The idea of a chapter boss being a sick but dangerous former ally who held it together just long enough to retreat into a depressing fantasy world just doesn't fit this series, but in a good way.

This quote is so strong to me because not only has Joshua just witnesses his mom breathing his last breath in front of him, he also just found out that his former brother in battle and best friend killed her, looted the country and palace, destroyed the stone, yet, wasn't even close to being done. He's living through so many terrible revelations at once, and yet he speaks calmly as he decides to put an end to the greedy monster of a man that Caellach has become.

it’s such a small thing to think about, but Caellach is probably one of the most realistic portrayals of what greed does to a man, and it’s scary. Like, the dude becomes so obsessed with money that he stops being a sellsword to enlist in the military to continue his desire for more, tearing down several cities, Destroying two of the sacred stones and being the main reason his ex-best friend’s mother dies. Then when they finally meet again in Scorched Sands, all he has to say is “when we gettin paid?” like, that’s horrifying. he becomes a hollow shell of the proud warrior that stood beside Joshua all because he just didnt have enough money to quench his thirst.

    • @maltheopia
      @maltheopia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

I have a theory that Caellach's corruption was recent rather something that was with him all along. If Caellach was always pure scum, he wouldn't have a friendly conversation with Joshua in one of the routs and Aias would've been more aware of his ally's plan to leave him for dead. He shows flashes of his former honor like rallying the Grado troops in a hopeless fight and not wanting to kill Ismaire unnecessarily (and also not being a rapist) but for the most part, well. It's like you said: "when we gettin paid?"

As much as I love most of the characters throughout the series, when it comes to villains, a lot of them are either not in control of their actions, exaggerated evil guy who wants to sacrifice everything to their dark god, or watch the world burn, but the ones that are the scariest are the ones that are the most human.

She was the lone female captive there and was in such bad shape that she lost her memory and could barely walk. You can imagine the things they did to her over that period of time even though the game doesn't go into it.

In Sacred Stones especially I notice a very extreme theme of Dark defeating the Light. The once proud generals of Grado all suffer a tragic fate, Duessel branded a traitor, Glen murdered by Valter, and Selena dying for more than your average Camus, not just for loyalty, but genuine love. 4 of the 5 sacred stones are shattered, and all but a few very small refuges of the continent escape the undead overrun. One reason I appreciate the cast so much is that the game explains only the willpower and hope for peace in the hearts of your units could overpower the evil of the demon king. This would normally mean nothing, but with how dark and jarring Sacred Stones can be, it actually kinda is worth something here.

Selena didn't even die simply for love, it's because she totally gave up when she learned that Vigarde was now dead/evil. She could have switched sides, but because she had so thoroughly devoted herself to him, she felt she had nothing else without him

Knoll's support with Natasha shows him overcoming his feelings of guilt and worthlessness and finding a reason to keep living. Sacred Stones has a lot to say about grief.

I wish they’d spend a little less time on new mechanics and animations and instead spend it on the story and characters. • @franciscodetonne4797

Sacred Stones has some very noticeable things, after playing the game for the 69th time.
+ Eirika is actually very smart. She disses Innes, teases Forde and pretends that she's a merc to avoid Selena, even before she knows that Selena is a Grado general.
+ Nobles in this game actually act like nobles, like, the adjective 'noble' (morally good). Even L'Arachel, who is a stereotypical pompous young lady. Which is very unlike some nobles in Elibe who are really corrupt. Vigarde is the peak example of being 'noble', which makes his role/story in the game even more tragic.
+ Selena is FE8's Brunnya. She's a Camus, she's a magic general, she loves her monarch to death (literally), she's emphathetic and gentle. She's also beautiful. Her FEH arts make her sexy, but not beautiful.
+ Speaking of similarities to FE6, I think Valter is somewhat similar to Narcian. Wyvern Lords who have no real loyalty to their monarch, and value their own priorities more than anything.
+ Glen is just there so we can recruit Cormag. He exists just to be killed.
+ Marisa is a tsundere for Gerik.
+ Orson's eyes in Chapter 8 are visibly empty, it's not like that in Chapter 5x.
+ Syrene and Cecilia are also somewhat similar. Green-haired ladies. Female commanders. Bad first impressions.
+ Creature Campaign is supposed to be after Formortiis' defeat, but monsters still wander the lands???
+ Innes has a fking spy network that spans over Jehanna. Now that is a tactician.

I do wish we got more backstory, though, especially as Ephraim seemed to respect him in the first chapter he appeared. Okay but in all seriousness, I actually consider Sacred Stones' plot at this point to be strangely refreshing. It isn't trying to deconstruct medieval institutions such as the church, knighthood, aristocracy, etc. like 3 Houses does. If anything, it feels like the most affirming in its own setting. The kingdoms, along with their respective Sacred Stones are needed to protect Magvel against chaos and destruction, anything from bandits to to illegitimate rulers like Orson, to literal demons.
At the same time, I think Magvel is one of the most beautiful FE continents in presentation, or maybe it's just my nostalgia speaking.
Funny enough, I do feel like more could have been said about Gheb in this video, like the fact that he insinuates rape twice, on top of other acts of cruelty. Really, he feels like he could have walked out of a bad hentai.

I'd say that the underlying theme of Sacred Stones is trust. Not just blind trust and faith, but well-placed trust. When the trust is there and deserved, it can move mountains -- like we see with Innes and Gerik (my favorite), with Cormag and Eirika, or Joshua and Natasha, with Garcia and Ross. But when trust is NOT deserved, it can cause disaster. Such as with Selena, Caellach and Aias, a near-miss with Orson, and of course Eirika and Lyon. It's a surprisingly nuanced take on the theme, especially contrasting games like FE14 and FE9 where trust is for the most part a generically good thing the heroes should give freely.

I really like Carlyle. He comes off as a very conflicted man who's wrestled with his emotions for a long time, and Caellach just happened to be the straw that broke the camel's back. Joshua obviously sees him in high regard which tells me that he used to be a good person. I get the impression from both his crestfallen expression and his quotes that even when you fight him and when he does go through the betrayal, he's thinking to himself "what have I done?".
This of course isn't to excuse anything that he actually does, it's still sketchy as hell but I like that there's a bit of depth behind it. Maybe he was just trying to find some logical explanation as to why he felt that way as everything started slipping through his fingers. People seem to like it when there is a sound explanation behind their behaviors, even if it's only sound to *them* and not anyone else.

Having played this game for the first time when I was 12, most of the darker aspects kinda went past me. In my eyes something like treachery is has always been part of fantasy stories, people die, that's just what happens. Giant spiders are scary, and they are a pretty good motivation to want to get through the chapter quickly, but at that age it came over as 'just' a threat to a person you can still save rather than a crual act towards an innocent child. Also the Tethys thing didn't come over to me that way, to me it was just her genuinly teasing Artur and trying to get him to dance with her, I kinda missed the sexual aspects of it. In this way the messed up stuff in the game becomes a whole lot lighter and actually pretty okay for someone my age back then.
Now I'm 19 with over 800 hours playtime, having completed all support conversations. This was my first Fire Emblem game, and seeing the more messed up stuff down the line as I was replaying it definitely added to the replayability. (Though the Tethys Artur support still feels pretty genuine and not really messed up, I guess that's just me though). Having said all that the E rating is still baffling, I'm not sure what was going on there lol.

I think too aside from the corruption theme mentioned, SS is also a really dark game given we could not save Lyon.
Well we couldnt save the end boss of other FEs too but none of them were this close to the heroes. Like from start to end, trying to save Hardin, Julius etc wasnt the first top priority. SS keeps making us hope we can save him because he's the heroes close childhood friend and it looks like he sometimes breaks off from the possession. But no, Lyon just dies, despite all of the heroes' efforts and hopes.
In the end too, were unsure if Lyon was in on the plan. Like for one reason or another, did he let himself be possessed in a desperate attempt to save his land or was he actively resisting and the demon king killed his soul as a result? Did the twins just choose to believe a lie and kill him so to save everyone else? I never really got the definite answer for this.

More subtle fucked up things in this game:
-Vigarde was dead for some time before his resurrection but he barely looks it, just kind of pale. But Morva was alive right before he got zombified. He was freshly killed, yet his dragon body still has the "flesh falling off" appearance of a zombie. Meaning Demon!Lyon did that to him in their battle. *What*
-Riev praises Valter's lack of morals, noting how he would "kill a man, claim a woman" when others would not. It seems here he's using the word "claim" as a euphemism for "rape". When Demon King is in Lyon's body, he says that he will "grant Lyon's dark wishes" while Ephraim and Eirika are present "to crush Ephraim, to claim Eirika". And knowing Lyon had a crush on Eirika. He just threatened to rape Eirika using Lyon's body and claiming that's what Lyon really wants deep down inside, to fuck with all of 3 them. *RATED E FOR EVERYONE, I REMIND YOU ALL*

They even pull a more morally grey move than Three Houses with Ephraim's return to Renais. Seth outright tells him that the people are only happy they deposed the unresponsive Orson, not for the return of the King (since they still haven't forgiven his early game antics). In a parallel, when Dimitri returns to Fhirdiad, he is told directly that the people are celebrating the return of the King despite his flaws. Even in the most morally gray post-Kaga Fire Emblem, they don't go as bleak as Sacred Stones.
(Sacred Stones is bleak, but not extremely morally grey. Erika, Ephraim, Innes, L'Arachel & Co. are all good to the core.)

I think something that's also pretty sad in the Jehanna map is that if you have Joshua fight Carlyle, you learn that he taught him how to use the sword

Plenty late to this discussion, but one other detail I liked about Sacred Stones in regards to Orson is how, even with the pixelated nature of our character portraits, you can tell that his eyes are dull and lifeless compared to the rest of the cast. As a kid I always thought he looked "off" compared to everyone else, including too-far gone monsters like Valter, but didn't have the words to describe it.

Scarlet's death in Fates was also an instant where I was left imagining the details up until now. Even Camilla is put off by how gruesome it was.. and she's deranged..
