It's a great little DIY project and the final product looks very neat and functional, well done. Depending on the charcoal type and thickness of the metal can, my concern would be radiant heat striking your hand when you go to grab it and empty it. This is why the typical Weber chimneys have a thick metal plate between the handle and can.
You could counterbore the wood where the heads of the carriage bolts are and recess them below the surface of the wood to prevent burning your hand on the heat translating down the screw. Excellent video. Many thanks for sharing this idea. I definitely plan on making one to your instructions.
Thanks for this video! I really like that you kept speaking to a minimum, yet explained it well. I think that of the can type chimney starters, this is the simplest I have seen. I plan to make one.
Nice vid. Thanks for taking the time to make this. Personally, I'd have had more inlet space below, and used a grille instead of a drilled disk - Allowing for faster air intake. ie. possibly faster lighting times. However, this looks like it gets all of the coals equally hot and glowing with an ash covering.
Hi Chris, That's a great idea! If you sandwich the heads of the carriage bolts between two pieces of wood, it would probably insulate the heat pretty well. Good to see you again!
+Jim Kodysz Or just recess the bolt heads below the surface of the handle in larger counterbores. And a couple of drilled dowel sleeves on the bolts on the handle side, with two more nuts to keep them away from the can should make everything cool!
Chris, it's much better if you drill holes on all around the can, enough to elaborate a grill inside, whit thick wire. I don't know how to explain it better, but is much better than the holes on the thin sheet.
Thanks I'll dumpster dive this weekend...this will help alot have been using briquettes to burn out tree stumps and know get stares from. Neighbors when I have been lighting up them so this way I can be stealth at nite....and priceing the factory ones 20...40 $
Go down to the dollar store and get a small stainless steel stockpot and do what you did here. The stainless will never burn out. You can use a jigsaw to cut the bottom out of it.
Good job. Although, I would have a put one washer/bolt on the inside against the wood handle just for extra security incase the wooden handle holes gets loose after getting heated few times.
18 gauge kanthal wire twisted 4 x makes the perfect handle. It doesn't transfer heat and doesn't rust. Easily available from amazon for 10 dollars for + - 15 yards
since the bolts carry heat you might consider flipping the bolts around ....... and sinking the the nuts under surface level of the wood handle........ and maybe even following up with a small piece of wood to even cover them
Neat idea! I have a Weber grill, but it also has a propane feature to light your charcoal in the two baskets . But I also have a smaller tailgate variety grill that this would work perfect on. That was a large can you had there. Must have come from the mess hall.
+Ron Briz My wife and I make our own spaghetti sauce every now and then and we can the sauce. This is a one gallon can from that! :) But yes I am sure the mess hall would use this size of can! :)
+Chris Pine nice little project Chris. If any one is on good terms with there local cafe/restaurant, that also is a good source for materials. Some years ago, while involved with cub scouts, i thought the boys how to make cook stoves. Thanks again.
nice little project beats really buying one and knowing you made it yourself thanks for posting also noticed the Geocache sticker the background that's cool
I buy one of these from Wal-Mart about every three years. I think I paid about $9 for the last one. So I guess they cost me about three bucks a year? I definitely prefer to use a chimney rather than charcoal starter. I don't like the taste of starter on my meat. This Is a cool project! Thanks for sharing!
I'd be putting a couple of nuts on those bolts to stop the wooden handle moving! I can see some crispy knuckles when that can is piping hot and you pick it up and wooden handle slides down those bolts to the can!
Not a bad idea.. the fit into the wood was very tight so it is not moving anytime soon. I guess over time it could get loose but so far so good. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great...Fantasting recycling. I want to do it, here in Italy sell it at 20 euro minimum. An improvement could be add a plate as warm shield, but in any case simple and usefull, thanks.
liked and subbed, brilliant design yet the simplicity of it over shadows the concept. plus this goes to those who are crying about tools, a hand held drill can solve the problem, just dont be lazy and change the drill bits. thanks for sharing.
Lance Link just a hand drill is all you need. Well a can opener. You have one of those don’t you? If not I’ll bet that your mother-in-law does. She may let you borrow it if you are nice to her. Lolol
neat idea! thumbs up... wonder if you thicken the wood handle and recess the bolt and dowel plug the top of the bolt to keep from accidentally burning self there?
Goran Svraka that’ll work just as good, he used the equipment cause he had it he could’ve done it with a drill. But why not use tools that make your life easier
A little bit of a miracle is to use kanthal wire for the handle. It never ever melts or rust and it is a bad bad conductor so you can pick it up without burning yourself
The cost of Kanthal (aka FeCrAl) has gone up since this posting because people are making their own heating coils for electronic cigarettes. But still a good idea. You can, however, order it a little cheaper from Chinese retailers if you don't mind waiting 2-4 weeks.
The handle could be made from two pieces of wood glued together with the screw head between them. That way you'd at least avoid instant burn, possibly replaced with a "s*it s*it s*it I need a glove", which is much better anyway ;)
this guy obviously doesn't know what he is doing. the sun went down and the coals were hot and I didn't even see a beer. lol nice build I'll be doing this for sure.
Ok. Now do something for girls who don’t have all those tools. A large flour sifter already has a wooden handle in the side. What about a coffee can, a can opener, and a pair of tongs?
Naw, most people want factory manufactured stuff because their friends will call them hillbillies if, god forbid, they use their brains and hands to fabricate useful things for themselves. Weber is laughing all the way to the bank.
You threw away the easy-to-add heat shield when you tossed the bottom you cut out. You don't even need more hardware other then two more nuts to hold the can lid standing off a bit from the side of the can.
You don't really need a heat shield. The bolts are long enough to not matter that much. But sure, yes you could put one on it. The issue I was mentioning was because the bolts are inside the can and transfer heat to the handle.
You pulled it off bro...nice way to use the God given brain and build a thing or two...nothing wrong with that...now with the twelve bucks you saved, get some more supplies, build and sell...
Very cool, for sure. But unfortunately the Morlocks are making these so inexpensive for the Eloi now that it's not really cost effective to make your own. Those Morlocks will be the death of us.
It started off well, then the no speaking kind of made me lose interest, then I kind of was going to ask why this and that, then just moved on to another video. Would be willing to watch a speaking guy's video. Thank you for sharing.
Muchas Gracias amigo...

amazed to see that people have so much skill and patience.
Thanks

Well here in the UK they are almost £20 so I'll be more than happy to make one at a fraction of the cost, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!!
Can't wait to create this, simple and will use my hand held drill, always one to mcgyver a project!
Thanks MaryLou!
@@TheChrisPineWorkshop I will send you a picture when perfected.... Heading to habitat restore this week for bits and pieces. Cheers(;
There he is, the real Mr. Chris Pine. In the flesh. Warming is up for summer BBQs!
+MRrwmac I am motivated this year to learn more abut grilling
Thanks for watching!
Brilliant...absolutely brilliant

Congratulations, and thinking about it, not everything has to be bought, great.

Great Video ! I Love DIY stuff. will be tryng this soon.
Great job 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍
That was easy, thanks for sharing Chris...!
Grate idea.
Great video my friend. I am going to make one this weekend!!
Don’t really look like the Chris Pine I’m used to but I’ll see what knowledge you hold sir.
Great job you done there, looks an ideal size for lighting charcoal for the smaller BBQs, in guessing it holds maybe up to 1kg of charcoal
amazing, you should have left more space for the newspaper chamber, maybe it will start faster ? anyways you did an amazing job
cooooool......, thanks for the demo.

Kick ass!!! Keep rockin!
Brilliant. love it.
+Robert Mazzitelli Thanks! I can't really take credit for the idea. I saw a video of someone making something similar. Fun little project!
Very nice charcoal starter my friend! Now you have to tell us what did you cook with those beautiful embers! Cheers! Daniel
+Daniel Vilarino Thank you!!! On that evening it was hamburgers! Not prime rib but very good! :)
Chris
Hamburgers sound good :) Cheers! Daniel
Nice!

That's cool!
Try putting the newspaper on top of the bottom lid and charcoal on top of that.
No need for those side air holes with the bottom lid having holes.
nice job
Nice and easy project :)

That's cool only $1 in materials but just $1,000 in equipment to fabricate....haha!
LOL... Thanks! Well I have the tools already! so why not! :) You could make it with a lot less tools! :)
Awesome use of that tools to make the work easier. I've already made mine with just a simple drill.
Be nice! I admire anyone who takes the time to share something useful.
I use punches if I'm poor.

great video....im going to make. ...thx
that was pretty cool chris..been a while!glad to see you're still .aking stuff! my father wood love this...:]
+Joe basement woodworking THANKS!
Good way to cook in a pan also.
+DanEngeWood- Dan Engebretsen Yes that would work!
Excelente, muy buena idea!
Most of these cans have a lining in them. Does that burn off?
A little bit of a miracle is to use kanthal wire for the handle. It never ever melts or rust and it is a bad bad conductor so you can pick it up without burning yourself
Very interesting! Does it cost much?
Chris Pine hi not much at all 3 pounds for 25 meters from amazon. The vaping community use the fine thread but you can get 1mm thick

or if you don't want to make an use a handle , simply use a pair of vice grips . insulated or not ..
this guy obviously doesn't know what he is doing. the sun went down and the coals were hot and I didn't even see a beer. lol nice build I'll be doing this for sure.
I would love to see your version when you get it done!! Thanks!!
This video is 4 years old, is the charcoal chimney in this video still rocking? If not, how long did it last?
More holes, maybe? Great, nice Chimney
yesss jajajajaajajajajaj i As I would like those tools
Very cool man but I can't wait 30 mins for my coals to be ready. I'll get hangry. :)
How about a video of how it works? Thanks
?? Did you watch this entire video? I show how it works
Chris Pine not sure what happened didn’t see that part before🤔 thanks!
Empezo a encenderlo de dia y termino de noche.
thanks for the aviset
WOW, these are the most inexpensive tools I have ever seen ...
Brilliant comment.. did you perhaps just read the previous one?
:)
Hi Chris, that was a joke.
But you probably noticed that...
Those charcoals didn't know what hit em.
Ok. Now do something for girls who don’t have all those tools. A large flour sifter already has a wooden handle in the side. What about a coffee can, a can opener, and a pair of tongs?
Makes me want to return the one I just bought for $14 and make two of these for 3 dollars. You should sell this.
Also gonna use it for a heater with toilet paper alcohol and rocks
Do you deliver in Dubai
well do e sir
Good !!! Regards !! I
Those are carriage head bolts, not lag bolts
ScienceFoundation you are correct. Thanks
I'm a bit of a stickler Meeseeks. Wasn't meaning to be a darsh or anything.
How many oz was that sauce can you didn’t say ?
on gallon can

thank you man.

I don't think they have anything to be concerned about. :) Especially with my purchases alone of some of their products. :)

How creative!
So you speak before your video but during video dont speak?
Not everbody have the tools that you have !!!!!!!!!!
That's true why don't you show us how you make one with minimal tools? !!!!!!!!!
