Thank you Jay. More to come but the cinematography is not always as cinematographic. I want to produce something that I'm very pleased about. The first part was good with the mist. I need to have more B Roll and put together something outstanding. The right location helps and as I travel about, Ill find it. I just hope when I do, the right conditions presents.
More early morning shots as the weather allows that misty morning on a more regular basis. Autumn, Winter and Spring are great for scenic film and photo stuff. Thanks Joni. Great tune to back it up.
Loved it Chris, nice to see something different around the canals from your perspective, some amazing video footage from what’s around you. Keep up the good work.
I agree with the bed time ethics Adam. It really has taken me back to nature where that is concerned. I don't use the tele to keep me up and I'm so much more refreshed in the mornings. Thanks for the comment and support.
Morning Chris from Sunny Switzerland. As a man of similar vintage who is enjoying the gift of serenity, nature and downsized living…ahem.. I thoroughly enjoy the beauty you share each week, both through your fabulous imagery, but also your imaginative words. Thank you for opening the kimono each week. You are a gentleman. God Bless Elizabeth
Thanks John. Opening the kimono?? I'm sure that has a meaning that is totally different to what I'm thinking at this stage. I can imagine myself dressed in a Kimono - Mickey Flannigan mentions it on his comedy routine. Funny bloke if you haven't heard of him. Proper Cockney Geezer. Anyway...thanks for the comment..Thanks for the support and tomorrow is Feed Me Friday.
@@chrismears-inslowtime Hi Chris. No offence or titillation ( Benny Hill springs to mind). Opening the Kimono is about just being open and exposing your full self. Best wishes. John
Chris, you’re lack of nature makes me giggle. The barking is a Muntjac deer. I’m catching up,on your vlogs as been away doing Rt66 on a Harley. 3100 miles in 11 days. It was truly epic. Your looking more like an old sweat everyday mate. I enjoy what your doing and your take on life.
Wow Jack. That must have been a great experience. Did you do with a group or on your Tod. I would love to do that. The life is starting to really grow on me. A period of static living has allowed me to begin to understand the boat better. Days with and without sun. Wow does the yellow ball make a difference. Nature. Well, give me something to learn about. Thanks for the comment Jack.
@@chrismears-inslowtime 3 of us completed the trip across America. 1 didn’t make it, when a Cayote ran out and took him off. He was casevac’d home with a broken leg. There’s an incredible feature on the IPhone if you have one. Take a photo of any bug, plant, leaf, tree trunk etc. open the photo and tap on it. You will see a circle with an i in the middle, tap on it and tap on look up…..it will tell you all about it. You clearly spent too much time on the Parade Square instead of the trenches 🤣 you can even download an app to identify animal sounds or bird song. I taught myself about plants and trees on FT’s. The farmers almanac predict a harsh winter…guess we’ll see. BTW that creepy crawly was a shield bug. Have a good day mate.
0:56 -ish. Shield beetle, also known as stink bug--if you crush it, it emits a nasty odour. Eats mostly sap and tree leaves, but also eats leaves and fruit of plants we like to eat. Lays eggs, and the grubs eat the roots of the same plants. Related to the pine beetle that is devasting forests in Canada. Destructive critters. A lot of people don't like them, but wasps are so great. They have evolved with humans, just like honey bees have. Wasps eat bugs that like to eat what human eat. Shield beetle grubs are part of their diet. We make hunting easier for them by gardening, so we actually have a sort of symbiotic relationship. Still, wasps are assholes, but then again, so are lots of humans. 😄 10:57 It occurs to me that a tiny battery-powered chainsaw would be ideal on a narrowboat. Lawns. Ugh. Why did that become the norm? If you've ever seen the "Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't" videos, lawns are what you call an ecological atrocity. Using water unnecessarily, even more so.
Good comment. Agree with wasps. Introduced wasp in NZ has had a major affect on the bird life in beech forests. Cycling over the Mangatapu hill/mountain ( just under thousand meters). First time all we heard was the buzz of wasps. You dear not sit down on the bush floor as it was crawling with them. 4 years latter and intensive poisoning of them. I heard and saw birds and didn't see one nasty wasp!
Thanks for the comment both Peter and Glen. Wasps have their place in the eco system and while they are a pain, I've noted, each year there are fewer and fewer. I've done some research into Chainsaws and that is going to be a purchase. The small ones are, I think a bit too small but it's hard to tell in a picture. Some have a 6m lead and that would do just fine if the log is outside the boat. I'm taking my time to research a bit more and will look for some in a shop to have a look at. I don't think i'll need it for a month yet. But when I've got it.....watch out. Bow saw killed me.
Another Brilliant Vlog Chris, that stuff on the water's surface suffocates the life of the canal that's underneath and covers what ever touches the stuff, pain in the A... Early morning rambles are great to discover what's about and fire wood is always a good find.. You might need to make sure it's thoroughly dried out before you start to burn it as otherwise it will be very smoky and and not throw out much heat... It's always best to use thoroughly dry wood... Hope all's well with Family and all's well with Max. Stay Safe and All good wishes to you... Regards. Old Skipper :)
It's such a shame that Duck weed is taking over. It's clearly not everywhere just yet and I hope it doesn't get totally out of control as It'll spoil the canals for good. I'm mindful of the wood drying out. I think it was mostly dry as the interior of it is almost the same light colour. I think by the time I need it, January/Feb, it should be almost there. That front lock heats up so I hope that'll help. Max is fine and the other four too. I know. Far too many. Trouble is the last three came all at once. Thanks mate.
Ooo. I must listen again. Thanks Steven. There was a bloke at work who could tell the difference between all the birds by song. I'll never be that good just yet but if you can point them out, be sure to tell me. Thanks for the comment.
Bumped into this man twice over the last 2 days whilst taking my parents on holiday. Really great fella, gotta say, as beautiful as these videos are they don't do British canals justice, I can really see the appeal
It was nice meeting you and the family. I hope your Dad dried off and as you've just passed to go back and he was assisting you with the tillering, he looked ok. He's now christened in the boat community and I've yet to do so. Good luck on the rest of your travels.
@@chrismears-inslowtime 60 years of sailing the high seas and the first time he falls in the water was pushing out a narrow boat on the canal 😂. Next week my mom (75), dad (82) and I do the Camino trail. Lovely to meet you in person, hopefully I'll see you on the cut again soon 😊
For my money, life away from built up areas and further into the more natural parts of our nation would be the biggest draw to life on the cut. In that regard, I envy you. Another great vlog, Chris. Thank you. Looking forward to 'Feed Me Friday'.
It is the draw for me. I was talking to the oldest son, (now 29) about that being the best part of boating. But then everything has a compromise, so separator toilet is a gift, but getting paint of milk, less so. Something easy for Friday. I need to build up to beans on toast.
I'm researching chainsaws as we metaphorically speak. Looked yesterday and I'm not bow-sawing again. Killed me. The mini chainsaws may be a bit too mini but a 12 incher, well, that might be just the ticket. Thanks for the tip.
I am up at 4.30am, lovely in the summer for early morning walks..winter is not so easy but I stick to my pattern. It's nice to be up before most of the area comes to life! Long time since I heard bulldog chewing a wasp. My other favourite is a face like a blind cobbler's thumb!!!
Never heard that expression..Blind Cobblers Thumb. Brilliant. Early morning are great. I used to go training at 0500. As you say, harder in the winter, lovely in the summer. But it's important to build a routine. Let it slip, it's difficult to find the motivation to get it back. Thanks for the great comment Susan.
Morning Chris. Another entertaining video. That green weedy thing looks a nightmare - must remember to avoid than section of that canal for paddling otherwise I’ll be covered! I imagine you get quite a few steps walking back and forth with the chammy wiping down the boat, back in my boy racer days they used to sell a squeegee for car cleaning - I wasn’t sure but it worked and saved a load of effort - might worth taking a look. Just seen the Friday special has landed, shame I have to go to work now so I’ll catch up with it later.
Someone else mentioned the Squeegee. Never heard of it, nor seen it. Mind you, at times you need to look for stuff like that. That yellow thing is a good cloth that I tried on a whim. Micro fibre towel thingy. Soft enough and soaks up a lot of water. Thanks for the comment Darren.
Incy wincy, Ebee gebies, tweetin and chirpin🤣 that's why I love living on the canal too... Couldn't have said it better. Spiders on my boat have knuckle dusters and tattoos 🤣Great vlog again. 🤗
Incy has grown in the short time. Not so Incy anymore, or it's a different one. A viewer told me the big ones are ok, it's the small ones you need to be careful of. He was from Australia, so I hope he meant those Aussie Spiders. Thanks Marie.
Oh how I envy you in many ways...... Just got home from the daily grind in the office and it was great to sit and relax through your vlog, thank you. My fear of spiders was put to bed many years ago at the JTC in Belize when stationed there and everyone pretty soon got used to the big hairy ones, boy could the move when they wanted.....😮😮. Great as usual Chris, thank you for sharing.
I'm sure it was dr Who that gave me the fear of those big spiders. Mind you, It is the speed they travel with those 8 legs. I know they run away, but they are just creepy. I shiver just writing about them. The daily grind is more about upkeep of the boat. Drying off the boat from the morning due and making shore the front lockers are dry. They are supposed to be and generally they are, but it's always good to check. Brasses yesterday. That will be harder to do as winter draws in.
Thanks Chris, that was a pleasant interlude, love the photography, the mist over the water is something I love to film. The little bug is a Shield Bug. You take care.
Thanks Christine. Misty mornings are my favourite time for photography and film now. No harsh light and it just looks great. The Shield bug or someone said Stink bug as if you squash it it stinks. Not likely to squash it, so I'll guess, Shield bug is fine.
Great vlog as always. What a great idea to get rid of rubbish ! Why don’t others do this. Brilliant. Lovely idyllic setting. Tho what was that bug on your roof ! Scarey ! Love to take a weed boat through all that green weed. Job satisfaction 😂. Best wishes.
Thanks as always Trev. It takes time to recce where the bins are to dispose of the rubbish. I just don't think people think about doing it or are content to wait. Not sure. But, despite the boat being bigger than most, it soon clutters with clutter if that doesn't happen on a regular basis. I agree with the weed boat. It's like cutting grass on a golf course. Great job. Forrest Gump springs to mind.
There are many people that just don't understand us as ex military men that we just like collecting wood 🤣If you haven't prepared prepare to fail 🤣nice bit of wood Sir
That's right. I'm even going to but a chainsaw as the bowsaw juts killed me. When people say wood heats you three times, collecting, cutting and burning. The cutting bit, well who needs to burn it to get warm! Thanks Peter.
I don’t like flies getting in either, I have put fly screen up in the summer, but like you, love the little spiders, I actually don’t mind the big ones either, my dad was scared of them too, so us girls just got used to getting them out of the house before he squashed them ha ha funny because he was in RAF as well :)
I’ve done half a summer, a full Autumn and almost a Winter. I’m not sure where the spiders go during the colder months. But it’s nearly time for them to emerge from wherever they’ve been hiding. 🫤🫣
How good was this to wake up to on a Wednesday morning. Professional , amusing and an insight into real life on the "cut". You know how enjoyable this vlog is because you used your photographic and editing skills to produce it. Since Maureen and I retired to a remote home on the Jurassic Coast we too have had more exposure than ever to nature and have seen lovely bird life and the strangest of "hibbie Jeabies" . We have noticed a lot of ticks this year so be careful when on your early morning walks!!! I thought of you a lot this week with all the military involved with the Queen's death and guess in days gone by you would have been part of this? Take care , stay safe and don't forget the pleasure and amusement you give to all your followers......your new life team. I hope the day comes when our paths cross. Best wishes, Anthony.
Thanks as always Anthony. That morning was begging for both film and photography. I did film. A week or so later, I did photography. I ought to do both but, the time goes quickly as does the mist. The lads did well at Northolt. Good drills. I remember the Queen Mothers funeral. Long stands and my body is broken because of them.
Chris, another very enjoyable and thoughtful video. We have those heebeejeebees, in Ohio, and they are called 'stink bugs' they have a sort of green smell, not particularly offensive smell. I too am not a fan of the arachnids. On a completely different subject I was wondered about the rules of using music on your channel, if it too big a subject then I will investigate myself np. Mornings a great time, generally there are very few folks who get up early and therefore there are very few demands of us early bird's time. In your previous reply on you most recent sandbag Sunday, yes it would be very nice if our paths cross. I am sure we would have no trouble fixing the world's challenges. Keep the vids coming . Colin and Heather Ohio.
Hi Colin and Heather. Im unlikely to know what those little bugs smell like as I'm not necessarily going to get too close again. I've been told they are also Stink Bugs as if they are squashed....well the name gives the game away. Music: I get it from Epidemic Sounds and pay a subscription to use use their music. It's a challenge finding the stuff I like as unfortunately, they don't just cater for me. They have all sorts of styles, most of which doesn't appeal to my taste. Nor the audience as the segment that watches my channel are predominately 50-80yo, 80% men but regardless, I have to like it first. Mornings are now my favourite time. Less congested, less contested with passers by for compositions and better to communicate with life. Looking forward to catching up. Thanks for your support.
😄. Hee bee gee bees. A big military chap like you 🤣. Yep lots of nature out there 😀. As for the green stuff, like the algae, nitrates draining into canal help it spread so fast 😟 Joan As for the wood check out it’s type because some woods do not burn well!! Especially willow and elm!
That’s good to know. I wouldn’t know one from the other. There’s a lot more to it isn’t there. I guess I’ll have to take my chances for now. Thanks for the gen Joan.
👍. Look up The Firewood poem 😀. It’s too long for me to tap out here, then next time you near a charity /second hand shop look out for a book to identify trees and their bark. ALWAYS look out for ash!!! 🌟👏☕️🍰. Must admit I’m not too keen on the fast running big spiders wearing track suits either !!!
That 'fox' sounded like a Muntjac Deer. About the size of a large dog, with a nasty tendency to bite when cornered (they have big teeth) we had one caught in a neighbour's wire fence, made a hell of a racket. Not flapping to forage firewood. The longer you let it dry the better it will burn, and of course it gets you warm several times 😉 Great Vlog as ever and some stunning visuals.
I stand corrected. Another learning curve. The Stink or Shield Beatle and the Muntjac Deer. The wood has been split so hopefully will dry a little bit more by the time I need it. It had been laying about for a while, although not really sure when you find it on the path. The wood bit is almost all white so I reckon it's almost done. Thanks Richard. @Terry Hoyle thanks for the info. @GC I generally keep away from wild life and they tend to wonder on the other side of the towpath I noted. Now I know what the noise is, I'm searching for a Fox to see what they say.
Oh and not Forgetting Battle of Britain day on the 15th. Thanks to The RAF. My Nans Brother was RAF during WW2 . And the 15th September was his Birthday, so I'll never forget either .
Good skills Kev. Most,I think we’re cancelled last minute due to the passing of HMQ this year. Brave men who kept the skys as safe as possible. Bomber command even braver in my opinion. 6 sortees were the average. Not many is it?
Thanks Gill. I think it's just I can get more in. All that wood I collected I was able to fit in that locker. Not bad for a mornings work. How re you doing these days?
@@chrismears-inslowtime I’m doing ok thanks. Another consultant appointment on Tuesday night so fingers crossed. Planning a trip up the Llangollen with 2 other boats for a few weeks. Should be quieter now. Very cold this morning when I took the dogs out. Got the heating on for a while! Take care.
Great vlog Chris thank you. Like you I hate spiders, love Jeffrey Archer, love early mornings and misty canals, love your vlogs. Best wishes Christine x
Chris nice volg ,👍👍🇬🇧 May I suggest a chisel guard to protect your hand from your lump Hammer when splitting your firewood as that is a painful spot to cut or hit ,👌👍👍👊
I’m sure there will be a few injuries with all bits of kit. I’m contemplating a chain saw. The bow saw killed me. I’ll look out for a guard. Good idea. Thanks Thomas.
Thanks Steve. I do like the soft Irish accent on vocals. It does suit this style of life and my style of film making. Not sure which drives which. Normally I have the tune in my head as I film but, I appear to have forgotten about that trick recently. Must get back to it.
@@chrismears-inslowtime By the way, I enjoyed Sandbag Sunday and agreed with your words on Boris. Good leader but made some wrong calls. As I mentioned last week, we launch in August next year and we are thinking of having a stable door on the stern, any reason why you didn't have one and as you've been on the cut a few weeks would it have been beneficial?
@@stevegilbert7581 in short, I don’t think it’s going to make a lot of difference. If you have a dog or small children aboard, it might be a good idea. As a point of aesthetics, that’s down to you. I discussed it at the start of my design and am relying as I was informed. Your call, clearly. Good luck with your build and if I can offer any other advice, let me know.
Another nice vlog there Chris, those misty mornings all to yourself must be very pleasant. The canal seems a fantastic to be close to nature... (although you can keep your incey-wincey!) Your heeby-geeby is called the Forest Bug, or Red Legged Shieldbug, you can tell him by the wee orange dot in the middle of its back. Theyre harmless native species which feed on Alder, Oak and fruit trees apparently. They say wood keeps you warm twice, when you cut it and when you burn it, but I guess also when you haul a log on your shoulder for a couple of miles as well ! cheers. PS Lovely job from the QCS last night on HM's final flight.
Thanks Rob. QCS looked good and did a great job. The Shield bug. So many people know what it was. I appear not to know an awful lot of anything to do with nature. I have clearly taken much for granted. Incy does a good job on the flies but not sure about the Mozzie. I can hear them in my ears throughout the night.
Another thoroughly enjoyable insight into your life accompanied by great music. Utube - Queens Colour Squadron - then look for Queens Colour Squadron Royal Air Force, posted 6yrs ago by Schmidt London and lasts for 4.5mins. Just in case any of your viewers are interested in your previous life Thanks Chris
Thanks Mel. I didn't realise that was on and having now seen it, I've noticed a mistake. Must of had my mind in neutral at the time. Easy to do when I stand around for a few minutes these days.
Your doing great Chris, loving the vlogs. Wife wants to know how you are managing with the washing machine and drying stuff now the weather has turned colder and wetter. Carry on the great work. Daz and Andrea.
Good question about the washing machine stuff. The normal stuff I hang up on hangers in the saloon. Most of my stuff now is quick dry. I can get it out the washing machine and put it on. I've done that in the summer no problem. Winter, I hang it up and it's dry within an evening. Bedding is an issue. The other half has recently taken that home to wash and dry. It's the drying that is the issue. I have dried it once on the boat in damp conditions. I hung it through 2 large coat hangers and rotated it. It was near the fire place so needed supervision for the obvious reason. It worked but was a pain that why I asked if she would be so kind. In short: can be done. One of those clothes horse would work and I'm look about to see where I could store it. It may be the next purchase.
Cheers chris, typical of my missus to ask such a question. I can imagine winter will be a bit tougher to get things dine like that and thanks for the reply. Ill pass it on. Ps shes loving your cooking vlogs. Dont take this the wrong way but they have her in stitches. Says your just like me eating things as you go 👍👍👍👍👍
Duck weed I think that stuff is. Aquarists use it a lot. I've just purchased a small battery powered Bosh chainsaw. Cracking little bit of kit. Would make short work of your lumber problems. BZ to the RAF who received Her Majesty at Northolt yesterday mate. It was very impressive, smart with respect and reverence shown. It'll be our Honour on Monday.. I think it was Victoria that was the first Royal to be pulled along on a gun carriage by the RN. But not sure why , and why they have carried on the tradition with following Royals.. Maybe being the senior service? Someone did tell me that Victoria's funeral was supposedly flanked by Sailors, and that it was a cold day and the horses were slipping on the cobblestones , and Someone pulled the horses out of the line at the last moment, and ordered the Navy to pull the gun carriage. Which they were used to doing anyway.. But I don't know if that's the truth or just an RN Dit . ? Any ideas.
Duck weed - so we have the indoor fishermen to thank for it then!? The chainsaw thing, I'm actively look for one. Not doing that bowsaw anymore. I'll keep it for....something or other. Not sure of the history behind the gun carriage. Some Royals have an affiliation to a Service more than others. William flew in the RAF and wears Prussian Blue on official duty. Andrew was Navy. King Charles has all three uniforms. Harry was the RAF Regiments honorary Commander in Chief, not now I don't think. Senior Service makes sense as a reason for the RN to flank the carriage. There is an argument that all three Services have a part to play so non are felt to have a greater part. The Queen was Commander in Chief for all. I've seen horses slip going through Horseguards Arch a few times and leave the rider in a heap. They don't like going through that arch and in particular when 6 abreast. (I Think) It's a squeeze. QCS did very well at Northolt. Thanks Kev. Reference the Dit - not known.
Hi Chris, Love your videos. Just to let you know that that Fox barking. is infacta Muntjack deer barking. A very common small deer. found all over the UK. Dave and Diane on Narrowboat Tickerty Boo. On The Grand Union
Hi Chris. So nice of you to reply. Ah a fix bark. You will find that on google.its a horrible sharp banshe like yelp. I only know coz my father worked on the land. Out boat Ticketyboo is in Weltonfield marina on the grand Union Lester arm. Just down from Norton junction. Di and I are subscribed to all of you channels . @@davesmith6193 thanks Dave and Diane. I’m on my way to Aylesbury Arm but I’m taking my time and am really enjoying it. It’ll be a while before I go up as far as Norton Junction. Brilliant content, great music and as always, well presented!! Thank you, young fella! Oh,,,,my wifes parents have a wood burning stove. Her father has a small, rechargeable electric chainsaw. He told me it was ideal to cut up quite large pieces of wood. May be a consideration..... Looking forward to the feed Friday gig!! Cheers, Chris,,,,well worth the extra days wait,,,my wife and I get home around the same time on Wednesdays, so I dont have the temptation of watching it without her!! Bless her little cotton socks!
Great vlog Chris. Lots of mushy peas in the water 'ey. As an Australian, I had a good laugh at you and Incey Wincey. The bigger and hairier the spiders are, the safer they are. Its those little ones that can really pack a whollop. You need to give your mate on the foredeck a name like Boris or something. Cheers
Well Greg. You Aussies can keep all your creepy crawlies. I don't know how you cope. Spiders, snakes and sharks. I'm sure Australia has some of the most dangerous things on the planet living there. I'm happy here mate. I have Dr Who to thank for my fear of them. I'm not so bad now but...... I like the name you gave Incy though. Made me laugh. Thanks mate. great comment.
Good vlog, Chris. I took delivery of two bush cords of firewood (as I do every autumn) & have spent the last week stacking it in the (appropriately-named) wood-shed. My father always said that firewood heats you three times - one when you stack it, another when you bring it indoors & finally when you burn it. Winter is coming (where have I heard that before?)
Having a wood shed sound great. Almost a satisfaction when it is full in preparation for winter. It warms me up getting and gutting it that's for sure. I looking forward to the good part as winter draws in. The soft flicker of the flame. I can sit and watch that for hours. I might change my sleeping arrangements in due course. Thanks for the comment Simon.
I found the splitting relatively satisfying Glen. After the back breaking bow-sawing which appeared to go on forever. Well, it did. I'm going to invest in a chainsaw. Just researching it. So now take away that as a method of keeping warm.
Stink bug , a brown one I seem to get lots of green ones , they’re another invasive species like the canals duck weed , I can recommend the ryobi 18v one+ cordless chainsaw , brilliant little chainsaw not expensive , you gotta love clear early mornings in late summer or early autumn they’re beautiful
I'm researching chainsaws now as it happens. No more with the bowsaws. Done that, I've felt the pain and now it's easy street. Thanks for the recommendation Chris.Morning are my favourite for photography now. The morning mist, can't beat it.
Hi Chris. This is not meant as criticism in any way as I appreciate doing all the filming yourself must be very difficult. I am not sure what equipment you use but sometimes the focus on yourself is a little soft whereas the background is somewhat sharper. This can be particularly apparent when you are still and talking to camera. I have noted that you enjoy photography and some of the images you have shared have been very good so you clearly have a degree of technical knowledge when it comes to cameras. Perhaps there may be settings that may offer improved results depending on your equipment. This aside I thoroughly enjoy watching your adventures. Kind regards Nigel
I suspect you were talking about me on the boat leaning out talking about weed. In low light, the camera struggles anyway. It will focus on something that it thinks is the right thing. I have face recognition on, but it doesn't always pick it up. It re-focuses as the light changes and then locks in. I'm afraid it's one of those things I have to compromise with when filming in low light by myself. It is a very good camera a Sony RX100. Albeit old and I haven't got a spare £1k+ for a newer up to date one. It's a lot of money for a point and shoot. I'll have a strong word with it Nigel. Perhaps the Go-Pro would be better as it's fixed focus in low light. Appreciate the comment though.
I’ve been out a few times now just doing photography. Early mornings I find best. Better light as it’s less harsh. I’ll be posting a few when the vlog catches up. Thanks for the comment. Some of that was quite good.
I get my music from a subscription based music platform Epidemic Sounds. I just look for music that fits the mood. I hope that answers your question Peter. Thanks for the comment and have a great week.
Nice vlog Chris, looks beautiful there. I've got a multifuel stove and collecting and cutting wood is great exercise. I say the wood warms me up twice. 😁
I'm looking into a small chain saw as the cutting didn't necessarily warm me up, it killed me. Not doing that again. Good chat fellas, thanks for the comments.
So long ago that I bet you can’t remember now but is the invasive weed called Didymo by any chance? NZ is trying very hard to keep it out of our lakes and waterways but it’s interesting to see what might happen if this is the same stuffy type stuff.
Thats a bit technical. I wouldn’t know. I went to Hugh Christie so why are you asking me Grammar School boy? Get the Govt to watch the vid. It’s all over London. Hope you’re well. Have a great week.
I reckon that might be the case. But, if I split them where I've found them I'll need a barrow or something to put the cut wood in. Worth thinking about, as I'm thinking while typing. There's merit in that. Thanks for the comment Andrew.
Is that a squeegee mop thing. I have a few mops but not a squeegee one. For now happy with the micro fibre cloth. When it wears out, I'll look for a squeegee. Mind you, I need one for the floor inside. Thanks for the tip.
Another great vlog. I agree with Poita would make some great photos. Just wondered, are the trees sawn to length by the CRT specifically for boaters, do you think? Loved the music. I knew foxes barked but that’s the first I’ve heard them.
Hi Bob. The CRT could do with keeping up with the general maintenance of the canals. They appear to be very reactive. Always wait for a problem. There are tress that will come down and block the canals. It's a certain. What is not certain, is when. So they wait. I've been told that was a Muntjac Deer.
Great vlog Chris, good to see your getting some exercise, think you need an axe though, you can also hit it with your hammer. Careful of the landmines (poops) on the footpaths when your walking in the dark. I enjoy you music choices, who's the female artist and what's the song called, I'd like to listen to the full thing, and others. Cheers.
I've not seen many of the landmines although, just recently more than normal. I think dog walkers generally do the right thing. There was one outside where I moored the boat. I do my '5 & 20s' when I moor up. That was searching for command wires on Ops. Same process and works well. Never thought I'd be that again. The song is by Ramin - Epidemic Sounds. Search for 'Don't Cover Me'. The female signer is Adilynn. I think she is a session signer as she signs various stuff. I think she has a great voice. Thanks Dave.
It looks like a stink bug! Up at 04:00, you could always prepare for first light "Stand To". Does the Farce Force ever do "Stand To", or do they await tea in bed then get up?
Always await tea. I can remember making tea for the Sqn Cdr who wanted it 'hot'. First day it was acceptable but not hot enough. I was on tea making again. The following morning I handed him his metal mug with a gloved hand with tea that had been in a the gas burner heating up the mug to ensure it was piping hot....how he never dropped the mug was beyond me. I took my hat off to him for that. I never made tea again !!
Hi Vicky. Thanks for the comment and support. The music appears to be a hit this week. The music is from Epidemic Sounds. The Artist is Ramin and the vocals by Adilynn. The song is Don't Cover Me. You can sign up for free but don't down load the tracks. I researched music for 4 years prior to starting the channel. However, I need to vary it a bit as I'm using up all my A list at the moment.
Chris, I know it would be inappropriate for you to 'jump on bandwagon' of HM Queen funeral and all things happening but - I would like to offer some explanation to fellow subscribers of this channel to expand and explain previous message from you on 'Royal Air Force '(RAF) and 'Queen's Colour Squadron'. Let me know if ok and I will share my perspective and easy explanation of how it works - and your service too!
@@chrismears-inslowtime So much more than ceremonial. HM Queen final flight from Edinburgh - to - London can/should be viewed as a demonstration of how honorable any repatriation is performed with respect and protection from RAF in the air and on ground. Royal family, or any UK family requiring repatriation, I'm sure Chris will agree that the same respect and protection is delivered and assured to so many others too. (maybe not so obvious to us all as we watch this).
Keep showing videos of spiders - even small ones - and I’m off. I hope you carefully inspect those logs you bring in: I’ll bet there are dozens of creepy crawlies on ‘em.
I did inspect the logs but they are outside in the steel panel where they can heat up and get a little dryer. Not sure how dry they need to be. @ years worth apparently. I've seen a lot of spiders recently. Some of them have gone spider overboard.
4:00 In case you ever want to impress person from the Netherlands; in Dutch we call it "Jip en Janneke taal", after a series of books by the incomperable Annie M.G. Schmidt who has written a metric fflipton of kids books, songs and tv programmes. You never knew you wanted to know, and now you can't forget.
Vinny. Thanks for that. I'll use it next time but then I'm not sure I can pronounce it. Your children are very clever learning that language. I also think the Chinese and Japanese are clever being able to write the way they do. I know its only natural but still.... Let's be honest. The British are lazy speakers of other languages and I'm one of the laziest! I dated a Dutch girl for a short time. She asked me to assist with her written work. I didn't know some of the words she was using were English. I got 'binned' relatively quickly after that.
That's interesting. Define household waste. All I have is what can be described as litter. No paper towels, or big rubbish. I suppose a tin or two or a jar, but if it's done regularly, it doesn't fill the bin up, it just adds to it. Good tip though. Thanks Stephen. I'll be mindful of cameras and Coppers when I'm about at 0430 ish.
G'Day Chris - your "EebiJeeby" might be called a 'SHIELD BUG' maybe? - Lots of foxes in UK nowadays .. and grey tree rats too. - No matter how bad it gets you should get-by with a decent air rifle & a recipe for Kentucky Fried Squirrel.eh.
There is a distinct possibility that was a muntjac deer. However an air gun, not sure of the rules of even air guns but I suspect @binness is probably right.
Lovely music Chris, looking forward to next week.
Thanks Andrew.
Love the music. Love your cinematography. Good, good stuff, Chris.
Loved the early morning shots and your song choice.
More early morning shots as the weather allows that misty morning on a more regular basis. Autumn, Winter and Spring are great for scenic film and photo stuff. Thanks Joni. Great tune to back it up.
👍
Loved it Chris, nice to see something different around the canals from your perspective, some amazing video footage from what’s around you. Keep up the good work.
More of that style to come Jon as I sit around for two weeks and really slow down and get used to the boaty life. Thanks.
Another great vid, and log hunting effort. No wonder your in bed by dark , think that's narrow boat time the nature way.
I agree with the bed time ethics Adam. It really has taken me back to nature where that is concerned. I don't use the tele to keep me up and I'm so much more refreshed in the mornings. Thanks for the comment and support.
nice work Chris really enjoyed the mix in this vlog
Thanks Lloyd.
10:57 It occurs to me that a tiny battery-powered chainsaw would be ideal on a narrowboat.
Lawns.
At 3:30, the distinctive call of the green woodpecker aka the yaffle bird. Nice addition to an atmospheric video Chris!
Ooo. I must listen again. Thanks Steven. There was a bloke at work who could tell the difference between all the birds by song. I'll never be that good just yet but if you can point them out, be sure to tell me. Thanks for the comment.
Looked like a beautiful day; relaxing surroundings, just enough work to stay busy, and you set your own pace.
Thanks Dan. It was a successful day. Small accomplishments makes a difference to the soul.
That barking sounds more like muntjac deer . But I could be wrong . Even so it looks a nice spot to moor.
You’re probably right Lynne. Thanks for the comment.
Great Vlog Chris as e dr, I like your method for chopping the logs.
The Cole Chisel works well. Bowsaw not so. I'm looking for a chainsaw and doing some research. It killed me. Thanks Raymond.
Some great early morning shots Chris, my favourite time of day I love my early morning walks. Great Vlog
I do prefer mornings now to sunsets for that very reason. Thanks Gary
Hi Chris, lovely vlog as usual, for cutting wood you need an axe and you can get small battery chainsaws for £85ish amazon, all the best Chris J
@@chrismears-inslowtime love the spiders, nature's cleaners
Belting vid mate👍🏻
Thanks Chuck
Enjoyed your video. Nice content
Thanks Rob. Appreciate it.
@@chrismears-inslowtime thank you for your responses, take care, Colin. And Heather. Ohio
😄. Hee bee gee bees. A big military chap like you 🤣. Yep lots of nature out there 😀. As for the green stuff, like the algae, nitrates draining into canal help it spread so fast 😟 Joan
As for the wood check out it’s type because some woods do not burn well!!
The longer you let it dry the better it will burn, and of course it gets you warm several times 😉
Great Vlog as ever and some stunning visuals.
Yes, definitely a muntjac's bark, not a fox.
Nasty little things, they have a habit of stripping bark off trees decimating them, however they are good eaters especially the loin.
@@chrismears-inslowtime I’d say it was a fox

We call those bugs stink bugs. Harmless, sometimes smell of almonds when squished.
Thanks Doreen. Unlikely to recognise the smell as I have no intention of given them a squish. Thanks for the comment.
That green stuff is called "Duck Weet," It is a problem here in SA as well.
It’s a shame that it’s going to be a constant on the canals. I suspect when it blankets across the canal, it’s not good for the fishes. Thanks Tom.
You left out the forth, cutting and splitting. Hope to get to the forestry block for some gum soon. Not so much for next winter but the next after.
You need to call on Vanessa Chris, she'll know what the bug is! :)
That's a good idea although a fair few people on the comments appear to know too.
Some of your best video/editing work Chris. Are you still doing your photography? Some of the scences in this video would make for some great photos.
I’ve been out a few times now just doing photography. Early mornings I find best. Better light as it’s less harsh. I’ll be posting a few when the vlog catches up. Thanks for the comment. Some of that was quite good.
Apologies - Utube - Queens Colour Squadron
Interested is some of the artists you use for the music on your vlogs
I get my music from a subscription based music platform Epidemic Sounds. I just look for music that fits the mood. I hope that answers your question Peter. Thanks for the comment and have a great week.
Nice vlog Chris, looks beautiful there. I've got a multifuel stove and collecting and cutting wood is great exercise. I say the wood warms me up twice. 😁
Thought wood warmed you three times. Cutting, carrying, and burning.
@@skyerider7007 of course, but I get the missus to carry it 😂🤣😂
I'm looking into a small chain saw as the cutting didn't necessarily warm me up, it killed me. Not doing that again. Good chat fellas, thanks for the comments.
@@chrismears-inslowtime chain saw is a good call!
It’s a girlie fox calling for rumpy pumpy.
By all accounts it was a Muntjac Deer. Now I know that, I have heard one calling another, probably for a bit of 'How's ya father'.
@@chrismears-inslowtime they’re compact and tasty
So long ago that I bet you can’t remember now but is the invasive weed called Didymo by any chance? NZ is trying very hard to keep it out of our lakes and waterways but it’s interesting to see what might happen if this is the same stuffy type stuff.
Thats a bit technical. I wouldn’t know. I went to Hugh Christie so why are you asking me Grammar School boy? Get the Govt to watch the vid. It’s all over London. Hope you’re well. Have a great week.
@@chrismears-inslowtime Technical High School buddy, not Grammar ;) and I bet you a pint that if I took my 11+ now I would fail!
Get a big axe to split logs, you can walk around at 4 am with it ;)
I reckon that might be the case. But, if I split them where I've found them I'll need a barrow or something to put the cut wood in. Worth thinking about, as I'm thinking while typing. There's merit in that. Thanks for the comment Andrew.
You need a squeegee for your roof. I really enjoy your vlogs.
Is that a squeegee mop thing. I have a few mops but not a squeegee one. For now happy with the micro fibre cloth. When it wears out, I'll look for a squeegee. Mind you, I need one for the floor inside. Thanks for the tip.
Stink bug. We have loads over here in the USofA
Small and maybe friendly but I just like to keep away of anything I don't know. Eeby Jeeby....Stink Beatle. Thanks Adie
Thanks for the info Chris, will look it up. 👍👍
Found music on youtube, great to relax to. She reminds me of Stevie Niks, Fleetwood Mac.
@@DIYGUY1-2-3 very much so.
@@chrismears-inslowtime Good on you. You've got to keep the Ruperts in line!
Loved this vlog! Great channel Chris - your articulation is superb and amusing and content so interesting. Who was the music by? It was so lovely!
Lovely track… have added it to my playlist too.
The insect looks like a forest bug or red legged shield bug
It appears there’s a lot of people that know a lot of insects. I’m learning lots still. Thanks Patrick.
Looks like "stink bug"...not sure but if you smush it it'll "stink". defense mechanism?
I'm sure it'll make a mess too. It didn't want to hurt me so I just nudged it away. It can defend itself elsewhere. Thanks for the comment Rebecca.
it's a brown marmolated stink bug
Not seen many since either. Thanks for the comment and have a great week.
Knock yourself out mate...Yes that fine. Thanks for asking.
@@paul_sadler nicely put. Thank you.
In many places you can be fined for putting household waste in litter bins. Just sayin’.
@ Martin Kavanagh, you would not get permission to use an air gun from a canal boat, it would be illegal in the uk
There is a distinct possibility that was a muntjac deer. However an air gun, not sure of the rules of even air guns but I suspect @binness is probably right.
