    Baking.....great idea Chris. There's a lot of pleasure in that for you but it needs a few attempts to get it right so don't give up if the first try isn't how you like it. Use your male analysis skills to assess what's not to your liking & adjust the next time. Soon you'll get it right. Crumble is very delicious if you don't make too much crumble topping & also you bake it hot so that it's crispy on top. Soggy, heavy crumble isn't worth your while as you discovered. Butterfly cakes are easy to do but you're better off making your own butter icing to get the consistency & sweetness right for your taste. Dusting them with icing sugar as the finishing touch is ace, it looks festive & tastes delicious. Finally, you're right that sharing your baking with others is rewarding to the spirit, justifies the effort involved & prevents your waistline from overexpanding

      Thanks Ferney. I agree with everything you say. I had a bout of laziness on returning from the pub. I used the easy option and the sprinkling of icing sugar would have been better but as mentioned. CBA….Cant’ be ar*ed. Thanks for the support and I will improve on both the crumble and cakes.

    Another winner, Chris! I was very happy that you had such a good experience at the bed and breakfast. That’s kind of what I meant by “making ME TIME” for yourself. I figured something out about you. From the very first episode, I’ve noticed that sometimes you’re in high spirits but sometimes not so much. I’ve given your ups and downs very serious thought. Here’s my conclusion, YOU ARE HUMAN ! That’s right! You are just like the rest of us. You don’t don a cape and colorful body clinging costume and become Canal Man! By the way, I just attempted to send you the info concerning merch a few minutes ago. I heard a swoosh on my phone; I hope that means it went through to you. I’d really like to ramble on about a mess of things, but I know that you’re a busy man. Have a good week with some me time in your schedule. Best wishes, Tom.

      I got your emails and will be responding after all the comments. Thanks Tom. I am human and do have normal weeks of ups and downs. I make a conscious decision not to do this instagram style of life. That’s fake. I’ll be in touch later today.

    Love it, Chris! Good on yer, having a go at baking. Back in the 50's, McDougall's, the flour people, used to run cake competitions around churches, village halls etc. In 1958, I got a McDougall's certificate for my Queen Cakes! 🙂 ( I did have a bit of guidance from my mum.) I did like the Oxford Canal. My wife and had a month on it back in 2021. Have a good week.

      Thanks Malcolm. McDiougall’s. Do they still make flour? Good on you for your win. Isn’t it a shame those event don’t appear to happen these days. I think that’s great PR marketing and people actually buy their flour because it it. Good CSR too for their website. Life is more about profit these days. Such a shame. My cakes may have got the best effort award, ie sh*t but edible. They did improve two days later when I was very hungry!!

    Great vlog Chris, definitely not crap.
    My best tip with the cake mixture is to beat the eggs in furiously but then very gently "fold" in the flour with a spatula. If you beat the flour in you'll lose all the air that you furiously beat in with the eggs.
    Good first attempt though mate

      Thanks for the tip Craig. What I have noticed will all this baking stuff, is there appears to be a number of different ways to get the same result. I’ll try different versions the next time I make them which wont be too long away. I just need to get to a shop where I can find ingredients. Banbury is the next big shop.

And with my grand daughter a couple of times. I have to cook gluten free now. What a bother, like learning how to bake again.

    You gotta watch that forward thrusting motion in to the sill as it can flood you boat if the bow doors are open and on top of that, the bump can deflate the cake you may have in the oven at the time.

    Thanks for the video. As you don't need to get out on both sides one ladder and bollards on one side is all that is needed ( if you even need that). Surely not having to walk all the way round to open or close the pair of gates makes it quicker and easier. I'm a big fan of skinny locks.
    Try a dash of milk, beat the eggs before adding them gradually and sieve the flour. Should give a better result. Have fun!

    • @chrismears-inslowtime
      @chrismears-inslowtime  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree with the skinny locks now I've got used to them. I mention that on the next vid. It was strange from the wide locks however. I made more cakes this week and turned out......not as good. Edible but not as good. I hadn't read your comment before hand. Next time.....

  • @mattsandilands6380
    @mattsandilands6380 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Colin is spot on about the lock flow, I live on the BCN and some of the locks are fierce and if I’ve not got the rope wound on a bollard I can’t hold the boat back. The cat is not a fan of this failure.

    • @chrismears-inslowtime
      @chrismears-inslowtime  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Matt. I have adjusted the way I do the skinny locks and only open one paddle. The gift is, it doesn’t matter which one which is better than the big locks. The disadvantage is, it’s slower. But then, if you’re in a rush, plan better or get another style of life! Just my thoughts which I mentioned to someone who was frustrated following me.

    Just watched your latest vlog. Loved it. I think you’re a natural comedian and don’t realise it.
    Worried me when you stretched across the lock gates - very dangerous and potential for an accident! So many boaters open the paddles so quickly that it knocks the boat forwards and backwards. When anyone offers to open the paddles for me I ask the to go slowly.
    Butterfly cakes looked lovely, well done. Reminded me of baking with my Mum and licking the bowl…happy days.
    Thanks for a lovely vlog.

    • @chrismears-inslowtime
      @chrismears-inslowtime  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Thanks very much for the supportive comment. The skinny locks I learnt very quickly not to open the gate quickly and as I can only do them on my own, I only open one. With two people on the boat, easy. Solo, only one paddle. I’ve annoyed a couple last week as I was too slow for them. The woman was quite rude but I was a good boy and just let them pass…….with a viper style comment to help them on their way.

The boat moves slower and I can control it better. The boats that get stuck is from complacent behaviour. I’ve seen it myself and forced myself to advise the arrogant couple their boat is at a jaunty angle and if that was normal. Never seen a couple flap so much. Thanks for the comment Jayne.

That's not a criticism. I've reviewed your first Vlogs after launch and your questions on choice were much and "will it work for me" the same. It also gives you chance to re-interview in 6- 9- 12 months time. I'm looking forward to your next guest. The colour saturation of your canal scenes was particularly good in this episode. Did you do something different, or was it just the light? I liked your musical choices. A fun sound track.
    Never thought about the potential of a B & B as part of the boating life--creative thinking is a good thing! I'm glad you weren't too put off by your previous baking experiments. Even on terra firma, things don't always go to plan, so experimentation is the way forward. [loved the "prick with a fork" apron. Absolutely brilliant. I suspect that baking is a little like gardening. Even if you're a master gardener, you suddenly become a newbie in a new environment. My maxim when it comes to baking cakes, cookies, granola or whatever: "One can never have too much vanilla extract." That's also a great thing to add to your hot chocolate.
    Today, I picked up a bottle of Bailey's (goes well with a shot of blended whisky) and the person at the till stopped me from leaving: "Wait, there's a gift that goes with that." In a small box was a frother for making hot chocolate. Reminded me of you so I mentioned your channel. Don't know if she looked it up, but maybe she will read this and respond. Who knows?

It’s remembering how I did it that is the hard bit. Thanks for the shout out to the person on the till. The Bailey’s makes the hot chocolate taste so much better as without it, the drink is just too chocolatey if there is such a word! Have a good week.

      @@chrismears-inslowtime Hi Chris. We would recommend mooring above Cropredy Lock rather than below it - but it might be too late for that suggestion! The small shop alongside the canal in Cropredy is fairly expensive. There are lovely walks through the fields and if you are nearby a walk to the battle field site is interesting - only for it being there - not a great deal to see. The festival is great and the whole atmosphere of Cropredy changes during festival weekend. We went a couple of years ago - in a heatwave which made it interesting. Two very good pubs in Cropredy and another a short walk away. You would get lovely photographs in Cropredy - it is a very attractive place.
      I assume you have survived the two geese at Varney’s Lock! I got challenged one year when they ‘bit’ me on the bum and arm! Always very wary after that.
      After Cropredy there are long term moorings so not always much opportunity for stopping. There might be mooring opportunity past Bourton Lock.
      When you get to Banbury we would recommend mooring before you get to the town, nearer the bread factory. The park is on the towpath side - there is a parkrun on Saturday morning (you wouldn’t expect me not to mention that would you 😂). It is not far to walk into town - and since the opening of the newer leisure area in Banbury the town centre moorings can be busy and a bit noisier. However a brief stop in the town centre moorings is good for shopping. After that we used to find decent peaceful moorings past Banbury - just before bridge 172. Just far away from where the M40 crosses again to not be troubled by motorway noise. The lift bridges marked on the map near there are not operational as far as I recall - or at least they are up. It is also not far to walk back to the supermarket (possibly Morrisons) at bridge 168.

They give birth boats a wide birth. Might be a different experience now.

      Hi Martin. I must admit being on the South Oxford canal has been an eye opening experience. The towpaths on the GU are great by comparison. These ones are renowned for their poor state. It’s even in all the guide books as to how bad they are.
      No entry to Widebeams. It’s denoted in the guides and on the app by a thinner line. I only just noticed it when I was on the canal. But no real signs that I have seen. I think it’s just something you pick up along the way. If you don’t it’s a great learning experience.
