Reverb Interview: Kiko Loureiro of Megadeth & Angra Talks Ibanez and Pre-Show Warmups

- Kiko Loureiro is no newcomer to the metal scene. Although he’s Megadeth’s newest guitarist, he’s had deep roots in the metal scene with his band Angra since the late ‘80s. But, surprisingly, Loureiro wasn’t immediately interested in shredding - he actually got his start on a nylon-stringed acoustic guitar. Reverb had the chance to catch up with Loureiro and learn a little more about how he got his start as a guitarist, what kind of exercises he does to keep his fingers limber before a show, and his own signature Ibanez guitar.

We can't even say "he is a shredder who kinda knows his way around brazillian music", no, he is a master in many different styles. I'm using the word MASTER here. As a Brazillian guy who's been listening to him (solo, Angra) since my teens, it only makes me happy to see him in a major band like megadeth. Even though i'm not a megadeth fan myself, the guy deserves a spot with the big ones.

I love Megadeth, and I guess Kiko brought a lot to last Megadeth album, cos his Brazilian style makes Megadeth sounds great, as Marty Friedman did it before. For your music, THANKS KIKO!

I'm not convinced that matters too much. When I was first learning to play I remember having similar difficulty trying to play either lefty or righty. It turns out that with guitar you need dexterity in both hands to be able to play well.
Not that Kiko isn't an incredible player, because he damn well is.

Gary Moore (R.I.P.), Dave Kilminster, Billy Corgan and Mark Knopfler are just a few of the - I'm sure - numerous other guitarists who are natural lefties that play right-handed. And I'm a freak of nature: I'm right-handed but I started play left-handed (like Eric Gales) when my lefty aunt began teaching me; I just copied what I saw her doing. Then after a broke my left hand in a bicycle accident, I began playing right-handed as my doctors thought playing that way would strengthen the fingers on my left hand, which it did.
Yeah playing guitar requires dexterity in both hands. The typing movements most guitarists do with their left hands aren't inherently easier than the picking motion done with the right. They're just different.

Him being in Megadeth was the best news ever.
He brings back the unique stuff into Megadeth that Poland and Friedman had in their solos. AND it shows that Dave gave him lots of room to compose, as Dystopia sounds like Megadeth, but there's new stuff in there that hasn't been done in that band before.

I legit started to tear up when I saw Kiko play Tornado of Souls a couple of months ago in Mexico. His stage presence and energy is out of this world! Easily the best guitarist I have seen live.
I just love how humble he is. Say that he has trouble hitting notes in a Marty lick (which he still can). The guy is so not full of himself because hes a student of guitar and wants to keep learning. Brilliant bloke.
Got to meet Kiko last week in Nashville, and he was just as nice in person. Killer player!

there were even jokes about who would fire who from the band. kiko or dave.
I work at Carter Vintage Guitars in Nashville and he came in and was checking vintage stuff out. Super nice and approachable in my experience.
Zach Broyles maybe he was in a good mood. I know a couple of people who were his students in the 90's that said the same thing I said.

His solo albums are ridiculously varied in style, tasteful and revolutionary. I've been a fan since 1997.
he is a really great player, not just a metal player who doesn't know anything else but metal
so nice to see a shredder (one of the many musical styles he has mastered) do a demo video without stacks of gain reverb and delay. a testament to what a class act he is.

in order to expand our minds and music we need to be as diverse as possible.
you can hear jazz in metal,blues in metal,country in metal,Spanish an Egyptian
influences in metal and it goes the other way as well.the brazilian style of music sounds great,
its very moving and mysterious to someone who just has listened to north american style music his entire life.
All of this you wrote is represented on "Temple of Shadows" by Angra. Pure diversitiy with a heavy touch. Specially when you listen "The shadow Hunter" or "So Near So far" from Aurora Consurgens album. Kiko and Angra always tried to mix sounds from all over the world with metal.
Kiko is more than Megadeth this is just a way to more people know something about him. I'm a big fan since the 90's with Angra, he is just a Real Master. Listen Angra -Carry On (1993)

Great player - I like the idea of the thicker S body for his signature guitar. Seems to give it a little more body. Some great demos, the brazilian stuff is excellent.
Ibanez used to have this S model with the thicker body, it was called the SA series, 22 frets tho. I used to own a couple, I'm keeping one. The necks were different to the S series. Nice guitars.

Kiko is amazing, but it is fascinating how till this day he uses Marty's solo in "Tornado of Souls" as an inspiration. That solo remains legendary. The bends and phrasing is unparalleled!

Kiko is an incredible addition to Megadeth! A real virtuoso, and knows all kinds of music, not just an awesome metal guitarist.
I saw Kiko at the Baked Potato in LA. He , Virgil and Anthony was great. Liked it so much , saw him again there!!

This guy is a machine and brings the "raw" back to Megadeth. So technical, but not the Chris "robot" thing to the 'Deth. Not saying that Kiko messes up a lot, but it's a "raw" sound (he certainly does NOT mess up!). Hard to describe with 7 beers in but that raw guitar sound sound (and feeling)... he nails it, every time. I'd go as far to compare him to Marty and DO NOT forget Al. I love this guy and what he's brought to my favorite band. In my top 3 Megadeth guitarists... so Dave.. stop switching guitarists already. They're not going to stick around (how long is Kiko in the band?)... and seriously, he's pretty awesome. Stick with it, KILL CANCER, and give us years of of awesome music.

Um puta orgulho ver onde ele chegou... Um país sem incentivo a boa música, muita dificuldade para se manter como músico e hoje a realidade dele é o sonho de muitos. Isso prova que esforço e dedicação sempre é o melhor caminho, infelizmente aqui ele nunca terá o reconhecimento merecido e muitos não sabem nem o tamanho do feito que esse cara conseguiu.

I understand why Mustaine was a little bit afraid of him, haha. I'm a big Angra fan and I know this guy is a really big guitar hero. But Mustaine is one too, and he's a smart man. He knew this were THE guy for Megadeth as soon as he listened to him (as it was Marty Friedman). I love Megadeth and I love Angra. I'm happy!

Kiko is the MAN!!!! I have been a huge Megadeth fan for over thirty years. Megadeth's Dystopia album in my opinion is their best album since Rust In Peace. I have become a bigger Megadeth fan than ever before since Dystopia came out. Kiko is the best thing to happen to Megadeth in a long, long time. Dave Mustaine is and has always been an amazing songwriter, and with Kiko's guitar playing and songwriting they are better than ever. I am also a huge Angra fan and love everything that Kiko did with them. Kiko is easily in my top five favorite guitar players ever. I am really looking forward to Megadeth's next studio album. I really hope that this is Megadeth's final lineup because it is the best one since the Rust In Peace lineup.
