Stroke Survivor Stephen Albright Shares His Stroke Journey

Stephen Albright - born and raided in Oklahoma Lawton area,moved to Ohio between 7th and 8th grade, wasn’t a great student, spent too much time partying, graduated by the skin of my butt, joined Navy in 1989, shouldve stayed in but it was up to that point the best and worst time in my life, all for the same reasons I’ve before my strokes I was a runner, had a consistent average 9.5 minute per mile pace, competed in 3 full marathons, several halfs, and a bunch of 5k one 50 k, all while I was still a smoker, started smoking in 83, last cigarette I had was 07/03/19 primarily because my first stroke hit the next d on July fourth while in ICU I had my second stroke the next day on the fifth, drs say the nicotine from smoking causes arterial spasms, which is what caused my strokes, just a couple weeks after I was able to walk with lots of therapists and mechanical help, had to get moving, daughter was getting married august 12, no way I was missing that, i interested, there is a short TH-cam interview I did for the hospital (kettering hospital a father’s promise, Stephen Albright,)now 15 months later I’m able to walk short distances unassisted, this experience has taught me a lot 1-slow down, smell the roses,have more patience, not something I’m very good at yet😬but one step at a time,2- set realistic goals, my original goal was to do a 5 k on my anniversary now its to do another full marathon, up until about the 8 years ago I never even considered running, turned out to be very mentally therapeutic for me to go out and jog10-15miles on the weekends I know the ahole running thing and smoking doesn’t make sense, but it nrver seemed to bother me, except for the one triathlon I did, smokers lungs and swimming are not a good mix,, but just like now, one step at a time until you get past the fog,, out of all the changes good and bad now, the one thats most bothersome is now I’m hyper emotional,, sadness, anger, laughter all are always over the top, And hit fast, i do a lot of apologizing for snapping at people,,I have been lucky in that I have a large support pool of folks between family friends and church.
