For $20?! Hell yeah! We couldn't even buy a buy a turbo controller 30 years ago for that price. I'm excited to see how far retro gaming has come over the years!

Anyway, that crappy Tetris player with the blocky black and white graphics (and a calculator) was $20. This is light years beyond that.
Yeah, that's how I look at this game as being still enjoyable despite the shortcomings. And let's be honest -- when you are somewhat poor--- you have to settle for a little less at times. I also feel calmer bringing a cheap one with me in certain situations.

I'm looking at this device (again) on sliexpress right now, and I'm finding these controllers, the SF900 and a similar controller that has these 2 comfort nubs below the corners reminiscent of PS1 controller, they have this 'P1 P2' switch for "2 player games" I'd love to know how good these controllers are. I wonder if we have discovered what the processor is that's in this device, I want to see how much better SNES and GBA is with CFW. Great review of this budget device, I might decide to buy this instead of the FC2000 V2. (which I bought once for $25 from a NEW store on aliexpress then got my money returned to me 2 weeks late... store disappeared)
V90 is better, but more expensive. This is cheaper, but not as good. If you have the extra $10-$15 to spend the V90 is the best choice, but if not, even for $20 this provides a lot of retro fun.
“While, yes, there are some legitimate, practical things you could be spending your $20 on, you should probably spend it on retro games instead.” This is good dialogue/writing! 😂 Taken from the book of Dweeb chapter 3 verse 8… no?
I pulled the trigger and got that new lime green SF2000 I've been seeing recently on Aliexpress after I got a refund for an Anbernic RetroMini I never received, in part due to this video's recommendation. Otherwise I was just going to get an 181-in-1 RetroMax.
@@TechDweeb aww, that sucks, no one found a workaround, like making it automatically close the rom and reload it again, so the user doesnt have to do anything? trying to get a 5 year old to remember to close and then reopen might be off putting... maybe i'll start him off with nes/mega drive games first and avoid any snes roms.
Do you get the button making after you reupdate it with the new firm wair or does it come with it cause alot of TH-camrs are saying it doesn't I just ordered mine today and I can't wait to play it in a couple of weeks.
I can't remember if you can do the button mapping before the update, but you should definitely do the update. It's very easy to do and it makes a big difference in performance
i ended up getting one after this video, works great. his review is on point. thinking about anbernic 351v as my next and second handheld, thanks for the videos TDweeb
Sick. ... This is definitely a contender (I'm looking for a tiny retro handheld to disassemble and make a tiny "working" "crt tv" out of) or maybe another v90 😅
just ordered one of these for my friend kid for christmas. was thinking about the rgb20s, but i think hes a it too young. With this if he drops it then its not going to matter so much and hopefully he gets into it enough to start to develop his hand dexterity and then can think about getting him something better in future after a few years of adding more roms to this. Will customise the rom selection so he has just a bunch of the best games, so not to overwhelm him with too much choice.
I really enjoy your videos but there are just so many of these devices now across such a wide range of prices. I thought i was going to spend $100 on myself for my birthday, but maybe this would do it. But would i wish I'd spent a bit more? Feels like it's time for a best in price bracket type summary review of the current and recent offerings. Also, without having really been exposed to all the options I'm not even sure up to what level of performance I'm looking for. I enjoy the odd five minutes of galaxian, or donkey Kong, but am i missing out on more advanced, albeit older titles?
You MIGHT wish you spent more. This device doesn't have complete rom sets for instance, so if you'd be disappointed that your favourite game isn't on here then yeah, just spend more. This is good for the price, and you can have lots of fun with it, but it's not a 'complete' experience. As for my favourites, I think the Powkiddy v90 is a great bang-for-the-buck, and it's like $40, if you like the clamshell form factor (amzn.to/3pjpsWX). And the RG35XX (amzn.to/3qX52n9) or Miyoo Mini + (amzn.to/46ivKGU) are also amazing choices (those are full-featured, so you won't be missing out on any games for the older systems, and they can do PS1). At the $100ish price range or if you want 3d systems, the RG353PS (amzn.to/3pg3MLm) or RG353VS (amzn.to/3p7QQHv) are really good for PS1 and most N64, dreamcast, and PSP. Hope this helps!
@@TechDweeb just ordered the RG353PS. I like the styling and form factor and I think you said the 4:3 screen ratio made the most sense with the older stuff. Thanks for the tips
@@imaginitivity7853wise choice. You definitely should be treating yourself to something a little more nice, I say. The Data Frog is just a cheap novelty console - and if it were your only system, you would have been kicking yourself for not spending a little more on a more quality system.
It does have MAME. No Ms Pacman, Galaga, or Trapper though. Not bad on the TV, there's an upscaling filter applied so if you don't like those sorts of filters you won't like this. I enjoyed it though.
Nah, the v90 is still the better choice because the clamshell design protects the screen, it's lighter, it has brightness control for playing at night, and let's be real the v90 is just a better device overall. But it is twice the price, so there's that.
I just used this Pandora 70s game stick for the first time yesterday and it has such a messy collection of games. There's 30k games on it and it's the kind of build that has 14 pages of King Of Fighters games at the start of the list. I think it's only a 64gb card, can it be changed and still work? Edit: oh yeah I said all that to then ask if this build could be copied over the Pandora build. Also that I am definitely going to buy the newer black model that is potentially a little better or more optimized than the awesome looking one in this video.
Ive had this for a month, and its great fir throwing in your backpack, i bring mine to work and leave it on the table fir anyone taking a break to play with....he didnt hook it up to the to though, when i plug mine into the tv, the audio is unaudible, im considering getting av to hdmi converter and maybe a 3 prong av cable to see if that improves it
Bro, I bought one of these on temu, I was very impressed at first with the roms list and still am to be honest. With that being said, my unit may have serious battery issues. While my batteries aren't catching on fire, the battery that came with it died in less than a week, on top of that I put in another battery of the same type from my vape stuff and that battery is now fully dead too. The worst part is, both batteries died after the 2nd recharge after first use. This may be a battery killer. Honestly the roms list may be the best value for this particular handheld, providing you have the ability to use it in another device. So I'm a PC nerd, cuz, and I happen to have an Intel compute stick I've been dying to make a portable plug in PC/streambox/retro game player. I'm going to go through my spare vape batteries and probably buy 1 brand new battery of exact specification before I give up on this handheld. Either way, I look forward to putting the micro SD card from this into my Intel compute stick. 😊 Added, I luv how you call this a "beater", because it's cheap AF.

Thanks for the review, it confirmed my worries; also, I don't see it too pocketable enough. May I ask for an updated review on the pow. V90? Maybe some new cfw worth checking out. It was really cheap on summer sale
does it actually work out of the box for someone who is a newbie and not tech savy (for example to give to children?) is the preloaded card actually working at that price point? thanks
does it have built in cheat? How does it run with advance wars, final fantasy tactics advance, castlevania aria of sorrow, metroid, golden sun gba games?
Using this with a 32GB microsd I am creating with the Tadpole Exe! Fingers crossed it does more wonders than the stock sd card, but so far managed to get a few GBA games in and put a new theme and BG music!
Got it with 2 controllers for 17€. What a steal. Well, now that i have tried it out i feel robbed - UNTIL i plugged it into my TV - this is the way you have to play this thing.
Nope. I just tested it for ya. The GBA version is stuttery and glitchy, and the snes version seems better but there are audio and graphical glitches in the intro cutscene. And then after that in-game there are lotsa graphical glitches.
Just ordered with second controller for $18 as a "welcome" type promotion which is weird because I've uses Ali Express plenty before - but I'll take it! I tend to baby my rp2+ as my Only dedicated hand-held emu so a 2 player beater preloaded sounds like a hoot! Thanks TD, cheers from Minnesota!
have you received it, and what are your first impressions? was it working well enough out of the box? for 18$ it seems like an excellent deal, especially to give this to a child
@@dadou193 got it, totally worth it FOR THE PRICE. If it cost more I would complain, but it is so inexpensive that you kinda can't. Lots of the roms are glitchy or not in English, but file issues can be corrected with minimal effort if you like - I simply don't care as this is my beater device. Also, the fact remains, most of the games work just fine and you get the entire system loaded for less than the cost of replacing one retro game. sods law working perfectly against the designers.. i bet they are still kicking themselves every time they look at their creation. 😂
I love your channel!! And your voice is amazing for this!
Haha thanks buddy 🤓
These kinds of things are always great for kids gifts too
There's a seller on AliExpress that's selling them in a 6-pack!
@@TechDweeb from kids gift to party favor
@@TechDweeb if they came in a little cardboard crate like a 6 pack of beers that would be hilarious :P
Can you do a follow-up video? I just bought the updated black version.
The best view of the video is found at 11:33. Looks great!
But Techdweeb, how does it compare to your favorite cheap handheld from a brand with your second favorite name, the Powkiddy V90?
V90 is better, but more expensive. This is cheaper, but not as good. If you have the extra $10-$15 to spend the V90 is the best choice, but if not, even for $20 this provides a lot of retro fun.
@@TechDweeb thanks. Over here, shipping can be rather expensive and right now, price difference is quite small actually.
Was waiting for you to make a video on this thing. Do you think you'll make another short one if CFW comes out?
Definitely!
Mine is new with all extras included $13. I love it.
Hey! I was hoping that you would make a review for this.
“While, yes, there are some legitimate, practical things you could be spending your $20 on, you should probably spend it on retro games instead.”
This is good dialogue/writing! 😂
Taken from the book of Dweeb chapter 3 verse 8… no?
Ah yes. The holy book. Pay no attention to the root beer stains.
@@TechDweeb haha! Keep up the good work my man.
Do the FX chip games work on this like Starfox, stunt racer FX, and Mario kart on the super Nintendo
Yup!
So SNES does work? That that didn't work was the biggest flaw according to other reviews
This is awesome! Thank you so much for the review. I wish you could show us the AV cable in demo.
Loving the videos dude, why do i keep wanting whatever you're showcasing??
It's my natural dweebish charisma 🤓
I got it recently for a trip and being anle to comnect it to a crt and play in multiplayer is clutch
I pulled the trigger and got that new lime green SF2000 I've been seeing recently on Aliexpress after I got a refund for an Anbernic RetroMini I never received, in part due to this video's recommendation. Otherwise I was just going to get an 181-in-1 RetroMax.
so the snes glitch, is it the first time you run a game after turning it on each time. or is it just the very first time you ever load that rom?
It's the first time you load it, but it 'resets' after you turn the console off.
Yo! Sup Dweeeeeeeeb? Man, Shank 2 deserved way more than 5 mins of playtime. Looking at my library I played it for 12 mins straight. No breaks!
Do in-game saves work? Like with Pokémon, for example?
Yup!
i ended up getting one after this video, works great. his review is on point. thinking about anbernic 351v as my next and second handheld, thanks for the videos TDweeb
picked up the powkiddy v90 instead as my 2nd! after i saw you camping with it,
Sick. ... This is definitely a contender (I'm looking for a tiny retro handheld to disassemble and make a tiny "working" "crt tv" out of) or maybe another v90 😅
Neat!
I'm not sure what the PCB situation is in this thing 🤔
@@TechDweeb well take it apart!!!! New video
just ordered one of these for my friend kid for christmas. was thinking about the rgb20s, but i think hes a it too young.
Awesome! Yeah this is the perfect handheld for a younger kid. It's basically indestructible :P
Is there a top ten games list for every platform on that system you would recommend?
RetroArch is already being developed, and it can play gameboy games. In a few months this console will be even better!
I'm excited!
Does it MAME games? Ms Pacman, Galaga, Tapper. How does this thing look exported to a T v?
It does have MAME. No Ms Pacman, Galaga, or Trapper though. Not bad on the TV, there's an upscaling filter applied so if you don't like those sorts of filters you won't like this. I enjoyed it though.
Does this dethrone the powkiddy v90 for ultimate camping handheld? Also love the videos.
Also that I am definitely going to buy the newer black model that is potentially a little better or more optimized than the awesome looking one in this video.
it comes with darkstalkers and the pokemon games??? does the joystick get in the way of the d-pad?
Any ideas on how to load back my progress back in Pokemon?
Ive had this for a month, and its great fir throwing in your backpack, i bring mine to work and leave it on the table fir anyone taking a break to play with....he didnt hook it up to the to though, when i plug mine into the tv, the audio is unaudible, im considering getting av to hdmi converter and maybe a 3 prong av cable to see if that improves it
Does it save your place in the games? It should
It has save states that you can use yourself.
😊
Added, I luv how you call this a "beater", because it's cheap AF.
buy a new data frog.... ive got an updated version matte black and theyre available in more colours now... cost only $10, you can find it for $8 - 9 too
1:36 I have that lol. Got it on aliexpress for $18.83 Canadian.
the "double-player" version on you link costs 27 dollars.
Ordered 2 days ago for 18 dollars plus free shipping.
Thanks for the review, it confirmed my worries; also, I don't see it too pocketable enough. May I ask for an updated review on the pow. V90? Maybe some new cfw worth checking out. It was really cheap on summer sale
I still love the V90! That's my go-to recommendation for best bang-for-the-buck in the sub $50 price range.
@@TechDweeb Black Edition review ! XD
Thanks for showing the reloading of the snes game running better...saw it in a comment
Can it fast forward tho...i dont have time for slow nonaction scenes
Nope 😥
Was this thing durable? The price is great, but I still want something that will last a long time.
I do think it will be very durable
Guys, can you connect it to the TV? the console is cool, but I'm really interested in this function)
Yup! It comes with a cables
does it actually work out of the box for someone who is a newbie and not tech savy (for example to give to children?) is the preloaded card actually working at that price point? thanks
does it have built in cheat? How does it run with advance wars, final fantasy tactics advance, castlevania aria of sorrow, metroid, golden sun gba games?
No cheat. Some advance games don't run great, but they're playable. I tried Advance Wars and Metroid were fine, but Castlevania had a bit of slowdown.
They call it the SF but they don't have it in JP/PAL colours. Ironic.
Using this with a 32GB microsd I am creating with the Tadpole Exe!
Fingers crossed it does more wonders than the stock sd card, but so far managed to get a few GBA games in and put a new theme and BG music!
It came preloaded with the games?
Yup!
Got it with 2 controllers for 17€. What a steal. Well, now that i have tried it out i feel robbed - UNTIL i plugged it into my TV - this is the way you have to play this thing.
Did not show tv connection?
No, I foolishly didn't show it in the video but I can confirm it does work
@@TechDweeb can you tell me which channel i should switch AV or 1 what
Looks damn fine, good presentation. I wonder about its longevity. Anyway, for that price I'm definitely gonna give it a spin!
Was it worth it?
Absolutely. Doesn't get much better than this at that price tag. Make sure to stock up on batteries, though :) @@Don12321
Why does he sound like psychic pebbles doing a bit 😭
QUESTION!!! does it run FF VI well? I mean like is it playable?
Nope. I just tested it for ya. The GBA version is stuttery and glitchy, and the snes version seems better but there are audio and graphical glitches in the intro cutscene. And then after that in-game there are lotsa graphical glitches.
@@TechDweeb Thanks for the info!
I have other, better, devices but bought for the price out of curiosity. I am not disappointed. Great value for money.
Sure no headphones is weird, sure no screen dimmer is weird, but for as Easy as it is to plug into a tv and play multiplayer without having to memorize a phone book full of instructions - I'll endorse it. Buy one, buy several. I love my Retroid rp2+ way more, but I CARRY my Datafrog sf2000 way more. Great beater device!! Contra all day every day!
