    How to stop .. for beginners
    The first stop you wanna learn is the heel stop.
    Scissor your feet so the skate with the brake is in front.
    Then lift your toes .. and that's it - you stop.
    When you get used to it, try to bend your knees and
    push harder on the brake for extra stopping power.
    ***
    The plow stop, if done correctly, is even better at higher speeds and downhill.
    Spread your legs wide, bend your knees, and push your ancles outward.
    Just be careful not to have the skates go inward.
    ***
    The grass roll is lots of fun but actually very useful too.
    When speed is too high going downhill
    or a kid jumps out in front of you
    that's when the grass roll comes to the rescure.
    Keep your feet in a scissor position. Lift your toes a bit.
    And shift balance a bit backward.
    Just roll off the speed
    however, sometimes the wheels get stuck and you'll have to run.
    ***
    The t-stop is a very good alternative to the heel brake.
    If well done, it offers even more stopping power.
    Keep your balance on the front skate
    and gently let down the dragging skate.
    It's called a T stop but it can be more like an L or V.
    What matter is just that your front skate takes almost all your weight
    becuause if your weight is over the dragging skate, you'll lose balance and go for a spin.
    ***
    The powerslide is a lot of fun but the most difficult one.
    I do not expect a beginner to do this but if you want to you can experiment
    with some sharp turns at low speed.
    Try to push through the heel.
    Most likely you will not go for a slide, but instead kinda run sideways like this.
    So take it slow. Be careful. And learning this should be more of a long term goal.
    ***
    COMMENTS
    Okay, all these stops were a bit too much if you're an absolute beginner.
    I get that, so
    I recommend; one, learn the heel stop and, two, get comfortable with grass.
    Practice the heel stop on a flat car-free surface.
    Try to add more and more weight on the brake to add stopping power.
    Also, get used to going from hard surface to grass.
    It can save you! Really!

      I am with you there. I have a set of Rollerblade macroblade 84 abt's. The abt=active braking tech and is just awesome. It makes it so easy to just slide your foot forward with all wheels still on the ground. My new skates Rollerblade macroblade 100's don't have that technology and it is awful slowing down on these really fast skates going downhill. Rollerblade are idiots for not introducing that (abt) technology to the 100's that they advertise as a transition skate to advanced levels. Why not give you a great brake so you can work on the faster stuff downhill without fear. Just really stupid of them. Anyway, take a look at some of the videos on the technology it is really great. Unfortunately the boot is kinda iffy on those 84's.

    The power slide brings me back to my younger years. I just got back into inline skating recently. Heel stops and T stops are my go to. The grass stop for emergencies. Haha I still have all the muscle memory from all the years I spent rollerblading, so these videos are really helping me refresh my memory memory. :)

    I think you underestimate the problems that come with balancing and stopping for (true) beginners. I've been practising the heel break several times for a total of several hours before I finally find it fairly comfortable. In the beginning I struggled a lot keeping straight, keeping my skates together, keeping that one wheel on the ground. I would love to see a breakdown on how to practice different techniques sometime. I've tried plow stop and t stop but both have 0 progression so far. The plow stop I seem to have trouble pushing my heels out and making an "A" shape with my feet (my left leg especially just won't turn). The T stop just I dno either starts spinning me or I get to scared to commit to it and abort. Committing to it has resulted in close up inspection of the surface. :')

    • @Bavmorda
      @Bavmorda 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I understand your struggles, believe me, everyone has been there at the beginning, and I'm a slow learner on the physical things. But, and don't get me wrong, no matter how much tutorials you watch, and how well explained they are, in the end your success depends at least 90% on practice and commitment. Tutorials (and this is a good beginners oriented one) can theoretically break down and explain every little movement, but it is you who need to get the sensations implied to master any technique.
      The T stop or drag, really, it just depends on keeping good balance with the leading leg, and how much pressure you make on the sliding skate. At first it should be almost none, with practice you'll be able to adjust it without your body turning.

    • @Bavmorda

      I can't help with the heel brake, I've never used one...

    • @geu6270
      @geu6270 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try a Rollerblade macroblade 84 with the ABT technology. You keep your skate on the ground and just push it forward and the brake activates. It is the only skate I feel comfortable using on steep roads as an early intermediate inliner. Unfortunately the boot kinda sucks.

    • @CanadaJai
      @CanadaJai 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      REAL. I have to run into the grass, lmao. I've tried using the heel break at very low speed and my feet almost slip out from under me. Wrist guards are a must.... Lol (also I have ZERO balance in general and fall over just trying to stand WITHOUT wheels strapped to my feet 😂)

    I am a complete beginner at inline skating, and braking is probably one of the things i should learn first, and this video has been a lot of help! Just one question, since I've heard I should avoid the T-stop, since it damages the wheels, but how dramatic is this really?

    • @HowToInlineSkate
      @HowToInlineSkate  7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Can damage in two ways. 1) Flat spot if you hold a constant drag for long, e.g. downhill. Avoid this by quickly letting go, braking, etc 2) General wear on the inside edge.
      The latter is noticeable but not dramatic. I've been out with these skates more than a 100 times. I still use the original wheels. It's just important you rotate (flip, change position) of the wheels after every few times you've been skating. I'll make another video about that.

    • @petergundersen5854
      @petergundersen5854 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Alright, thanks bro

    • @daves2hd
      @daves2hd 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Oh yes please do make a detailed video about that! Every channel talks about cleaning bearings and changing wheels and how to flip them. Heck EVEN the skate manual says HOW to flip wheels. But yet to discover a video that explains WHEN to switch the wheels (manual has no mention of this). As a beginner I don't skate long nor far, my wheels get worn on the sides because,.. my stride looks like a duck trying to moonwalk. But I have no idea what to look for when the times comes to switch and flip the wheels.

    • @Bavmorda
      @Bavmorda 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be a great idea for a tutorial, but in the meantime, there you have a simple but useful guide about when and how you can rotate your wheels:
      skating.thierstein.net/Knowledge/Inline_Skating_Rollerblading_Information_Wheel_rotation.html
      It's common for beginners to skate 'like a duck' to some degree, and wear out the wheels mostly on the inside edge. But be careful, it may also be indicative of your skates not being tight enough, not being your size, or just that they don't have enough lateral support (this is common with cheap fitness skates). Try to focus a little more on keeping the wheels perpendicular to the ground (unless you're turning or braking...), and try to adjust them correctly. When rotating your wheels you have to keep that in mind, and always put the worn out edge towards the outside.

    • @Bavmorda
      @Bavmorda 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A simple tip: if you see the wheels' wear is yet non symmetrical, they are ready for rotation. The more often you rotate/flip them, the more symmetrical they remain, and the more predictable and comfortable your skating will be.

    I'm struggling with the T-stop but I think this is mainly due to putting too much weight on my dragging leg.
    As I practice my stop I usually feel like all my weight wants to go onto my dragging foot and I'll usually spin

    • @jed5356
      @jed5356 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Martin Hibbert did you improve ??
      I have the exact same problem.. whenever I try it, it stops me instantly and I end up turning around

    • @Mrmhibbert
      @Mrmhibbert 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jed no I'm still working on it.
      For me personally I find it easier to use my front wheel to stop as all 4 tend to knock me off balance and send me off to the left or right

    • @jed5356
      @jed5356 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Martin Hibbert that’s funny because that’s exactly how I turn right and left x)
      When I’m using my 4 wheels, it would always make me turn or spin so now I’m kinda using it on purpose for this (even tho I basically did this to lose speed)
      Like you said in your first comment, I think the problem is about putting too much weight on the dragging leg. I’ll try to put more weight in the front leg and see the difference
      And yeah when I use on wheel, it also works a lot better with me, compared to the 4 wheels together

    • @Mrmhibbert
      @Mrmhibbert 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jed I think it's all just practice and finding that balance... My daughter skates also and she can t-stop on a dime at any speed.
      At the moment I'm just happy using a turns and plough stop to slow me down until I perfect it.

    • @jed5356
      @jed5356 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Martin Hibbert that’s really good to know ! I was starting to think there was something wrong with my skates, but it was my technic which was probably bad
      I’ll keep practicing
      Thank you and good luck !

    The most efficient stop is actually the heelbrake. Look e.g. here: th-cam.com/video/Aw-dGSh61q4/w-d-xo.html It's way better than T-Stop or even magic. You just have to put enough pressure on it. Had also learned from a skate instructor, that she had compared stopping distances with all different method. Heel is simply the best, but not as flashy as the others.

    • @HowToInlineSkate
      @HowToInlineSkate  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea, it's an excellent video by Shop Task. Not sure he mentioned T-stop though? His point about heel brake is that it can be applied instantly versus the slide stops that need some initialization. The T-stop, as with the heel, is instant and when you push really hard on all four wheels (requires perfect balance not to spin), you have more braking power than with just one rubber pad on the heel.

    • @HowToInlineSkate
      @HowToInlineSkate  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I should add that when learning t-stop, better keep 90% of weight or more on front skate. Only 10% on dragging, or even just tap is lightly. At this level, yes, absolutely, the heel brake is better. As technique improves, you can add more and more pressure on the dragging skate, and at some point you'll find the t-stop more effective than the heel.

    • @Bavmorda
      @Bavmorda 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not only is the T stop potentially more efficient than the heel brake, and it's not about "flashing". The heel brake simply gets in the way for A LOT of techniques, and that can be very dangerous.
      I'd rather rotate wheels a little more often, than having my skating progress laid back, and perhaps hurt myself hardly, due to a mediocre braking device that gets in the way.
      If it's so effective, I don't know why don't any downhill and speed skaters wear and use them...
