The last Sultan of Zanzibar, deposed in 1964, is still alive! Jamshid bin Abdullah (born 1929) lived in Portsmouth, UK until 2020, when he was allowed to return, to Oman. The Sultan of Zanzibar lives in Oman now.

He from the same royal house as the sultan of oman. They allowed his family to live in oman but not him because he had the title of sultan also. He only was allowed to go live there in 2020 because he renounce his title of sultan. He still kept being member of the same royal house tho.

He is quoting the viral video "History of the World.. I guess" by Bill Wurtz.
Its such an entertaining and quotable video, plus history teachers started using it as a history primer for classes. It's so shockingly accurate for being a 30+ min nutshell of the history of history. Plus most of the quotes are sung so its extra catchy. The video is HIGHLY recommended.
My favorite quotes are: "is the land safe yet?" "NO! The SUN is a deadly lazor... Not anymore, there's a blanket!"
And "China is whole again, than it broke again!" (Sung as a catchy song)

For those who don't know what happened in 1896: The shortest war in history happened, the Anglo-Zanzibar War. As shown here, Zanzibar was once a British protectorate. The pro-British Sultan Hamad bin Thuwaini died on August 25, 1896 due to poisoning from his anti-British cousin Khalid bin Barghash. The British preferred Hamoud bin Mohammed to succeed to the throne to keep their interests. According to an agreement in 1890, the candidate for accession would need to obtain permission from the British consul. Khalid obviously didn't do that, and thus they sent an ultimatum demanding him and his forces to stand down and leave the palace. Instead, he barricaded himself.
With three cruisers, two gunboats, 150 marines and sailors, and pro-British Zanzibaris, they attacked the palace harbor on August 27 and set it on fire. 2,800 Zanzibaris defended the palace, and this led to around 500 dead. After 38 minutes of battle, the war ended with the British putting Hamoud in charge of a new government. And Khalid fled to seek asylum to German East Africa via the German consulate on Zanzibar

The brief period when Zanzibar was a People's Republic is very interesting. The Zanzibar Revolution happened in January 1964 as the result of the people being tired of Arab minority rule over the natives. The Eastern Bloc powers of East Germany and the Soviet Union, along with the anti-Soviet People's Republic of China, immediately recognized the country and sent advisors. The new government's communist ties concerned Western governments like the US and of course the UK. As Zanzibar lay within the UK's sphere of influence, the British government drew up a number of intervention plans. However, after British and American citizens were successfully evacuated, these plans were not put into effect.
For their flag, they chose a light blue, black, and green tricolor. As mentioned here, they decided to merge with Tanganyika in April of that year, and the name changed to Tanzania in October. Tanganyika's flag was a green-black-green flag with gold bands. So when they merged, they merged not just the two names as Tanzania but also the two flags...hence how the Tanzanian flag was created.

    Two questions:
    1) How was Zanzibar able to get vassels so far landinwards?
    2) How did Britain colonise parts inland without a connection to the coast?

    • @EmperorTigerstar

The answer to both is trade routes. Zanzibar had a slave trading empire while Britain wanted control of resource hotspots.
