I tried to be a bit selective on vassal for this video since some states were merely economically dependent rather than outright dependent. Still expect the usual Friday video!
Hi!❤
well uhh.. i didn’t expect zanzibar to be greater around the 1870s.
Good job bro thanks 😊
Hi
The last Sultan of Zanzibar, deposed in 1964, is still alive! Jamshid bin Abdullah (born 1929) lived in Portsmouth, UK until 2020, when he was allowed to return, to Oman. The Sultan of Zanzibar lives in Oman now.
What a twist
He from the same royal house as the sultan of oman. They allowed his family to live in oman but not him because he had the title of sultan also. He only was allowed to go live there in 2020 because he renounce his title of sultan. He still kept being member of the same royal house tho.
its opposite day up in here
That's just...where he lives.
The monarchy will be restored soon hopefully with full independence from Tanzania!
The sultan of Oman lives in Zanzibar now. That's just where he lives.
Really
That is no longer the case.
He is quoting the viral video "History of the World.. I guess" by Bill Wurtz.
Its such an entertaining and quotable video, plus history teachers started using it as a history primer for classes. It's so shockingly accurate for being a 30+ min nutshell of the history of history. Plus most of the quotes are sung so its extra catchy. The video is HIGHLY recommended.
My favorite quotes are: "is the land safe yet?" "NO! The SUN is a deadly lazor... Not anymore, there's a blanket!"
And "China is whole again, than it broke again!" (Sung as a catchy song)
@@Fischyk_ until 2020 the last sultan of zanzibar lived in UK now he lives in oman and he 94 years old
The sultan of Zanzibar lives in Oman now. That's just where he lives.
For those who don't know what happened in 1896: The shortest war in history happened, the Anglo-Zanzibar War. As shown here, Zanzibar was once a British protectorate. The pro-British Sultan Hamad bin Thuwaini died on August 25, 1896 due to poisoning from his anti-British cousin Khalid bin Barghash. The British preferred Hamoud bin Mohammed to succeed to the throne to keep their interests. According to an agreement in 1890, the candidate for accession would need to obtain permission from the British consul. Khalid obviously didn't do that, and thus they sent an ultimatum demanding him and his forces to stand down and leave the palace. Instead, he barricaded himself.
With three cruisers, two gunboats, 150 marines and sailors, and pro-British Zanzibaris, they attacked the palace harbor on August 27 and set it on fire. 2,800 Zanzibaris defended the palace, and this led to around 500 dead. After 38 minutes of battle, the war ended with the British putting Hamoud in charge of a new government. And Khalid fled to seek asylum to German East Africa via the German consulate on Zanzibar
Thank you glorious supreme leader Kim Jong Un
Please just don't ever stop if you're able to keep going (and aren't completely sick of doing this). I love these videos.
The brief period when Zanzibar was a People's Republic is very interesting. The Zanzibar Revolution happened in January 1964 as the result of the people being tired of Arab minority rule over the natives. The Eastern Bloc powers of East Germany and the Soviet Union, along with the anti-Soviet People's Republic of China, immediately recognized the country and sent advisors. The new government's communist ties concerned Western governments like the US and of course the UK. As Zanzibar lay within the UK's sphere of influence, the British government drew up a number of intervention plans. However, after British and American citizens were successfully evacuated, these plans were not put into effect.
For their flag, they chose a light blue, black, and green tricolor. As mentioned here, they decided to merge with Tanganyika in April of that year, and the name changed to Tanzania in October. Tanganyika's flag was a green-black-green flag with gold bands. So when they merged, they merged not just the two names as Tanzania but also the two flags...hence how the Tanzanian flag was created.
The Sultan of Oman! lives in Zanzibar now!
… that’s just… where he lives…
And now the Sultan of Zanzibar lives in Oman. Funny how that sort of thing happens.
@@occam7382 Lol I didn’t know that!
The shortest war in history happened here
Zanzibar having a complex trade network in some of the most uncharted parts of Africa
Britain: dibs
Zanzibar are known for slave trade that's the reason why britain conquered it
Their main trade item was slaves though.
The reason Britain intervened was to stop that. It was not "dibs".
@korakys that was part of it. Also remember Britain had a goal of connecting Egypt to South Africa. The scramble of Africa is a pretty big topic
Thank you for making this video
The vast Omani Empire with Zanzibar as its most prized possession was absolutely marvelous. They had such an interesting state!
wasn't it an evil state completely reliant on the trading of slaves?
"Absolutely marvelous"? I admit I don't know much Omani history but I thought the reason the empire existed was to facilitate the slave trade, which is not so marvellous to me...
@@korakys I think he means marvelous in it's original meaning of "causing great wonder" rather than "it's a good thing". Cause yeah, the fact Oman was able to beat the Portuguese and have it's own little empire back then seems such a weird part of history.
@@korakysThe Spanish existed for genocide and slavery. Bet you don't whine about their empire.
Very nice video!
Two questions:
1) How was Zanzibar able to get vassels so far landinwards?
2) How did Britain colonise parts inland without a connection to the coast?
The answer to both is trade routes. Zanzibar had a slave trading empire while Britain wanted control of resource hotspots.
There even were wars between Arab slavers in the Congo and Belgian forces of King Leopold. The Swahili states were the facilitators of trade in resources and slaves between Africa and the Muslim world. Very interesting stuff.
0:57 A legend was born
Who knew that one of the greatest rock legends would be born in that place.

Didn't know Zanzibar had territory in Eastern Congo (Utetera Sultanate). That explains why it's the only region in DR Congo that speaks Swahili.
EmperorTigerstar can you do the history of Honduras please
Not to be confused with Big Boss's nation in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.
Interesting
Do you still use Windows Movie Maker?
What website or app do you use for this?
Next you should do a video on the history of Hispaniola; it has a really rich and unique history!
Wheres new haven?
Oh yeah i know the history! I play Victoria 2 too! France makes Zanzibar a protectorate.
:D
You mean Portugal...
Still waiting for "Anglo-Sanzibar war: every second"
Off to Zanzibar, to meet the Zanzibarbarians!
The craziest thing that I found out recently (coincidentally) was that the name for Tanzania is just a mix between “Tanganiyka” and “Zanzibar” making “Tanzania” as both parties were equal in the creation of the country. I found that really interesting
tanzania's flag is also a merger of both countries' post independance flag
Should have also shown the capital of Zanzibar the Province.
PagMan Zanzibar mentioned

Ayo say that again 🤨
It was all going great until the fire nation attacked, as per usual.
and the sultan was ended by a 40 minutes fight with the Brits
Many of black zanzibars are shirazi from iran old persia empire many things in Zanzibar is from persian culture
Idk what to comment, just like this comment if you like so
oke doke
I thought that was owned by the Germans before the British as a German colony known as German East Africa?…
Randomly spawns in congo? Ok??
Read about the Congo arab war.
GERMAN EAST AFRICA! You forget to mention it
German East Africa was the name of a German colony (also a protected area) that existed from 1885 to 1918. The area included the present-day countries of Tanzania (excluding Zanzibar), Burundi and Rwanda, as well as a small area in what is now Mozambique.
Could have been a lot better.
What were some of the mistakes in this videos?
@@oajajaj quite almost everything
@@_PinkieHuh example?
@@oajajaj for precolonial Tanzania, they seem to have traced a map by a guy name Doodlate which is by itself inaccurate in many points, however they still ommit certain aspects of Doodlate’s map which are right, an example would be the vassal states in Kilimanjaro, Zanzibari control of the somali coast, etc
There's always a bigger empire.
Oh so that's why there is a sizable muslim population in Tanzania/Mozambique.
Zanzibar? More like Zanax! Amirite
German colony
Nope
I hate colonialism man 😔
I hope Tippu Tip did no dirty business in the Sultanate of Utetera🫣
