  • Something that won't spoil is an essential part of any Viking pantry to survive those long winters. When you go traveling you have to have something light but filling to take with you. This bacon and apple porridge with barley and oats checks all those boxes. Tasty and warm on a cold winter day after a long hike. Or a cozy breakfast for your long hall.
Also in this video a few rambles! We talk about apples, travel food, and if Vikings were smart enough to make a chair to sit on.

I absolutely love barely. It's one of my favourite things, and definitely my favourite grain

Adding grains to the oils like the bacon grease before adding the water is similar to how Risoto is made.
I didn't ever consider cooking poridge this way. I like it and I'll try it for sure.

If you do be sure to share your results with us! I'm pretty sure I got the general idea from the Ribe Center but I honestly didn't go back and check how they did it until I went to grab the website for the video.

Pretty sure the Vikings traditionally ate tacos whilst on the move.

I mean that's what I would eat every day if I could! But that gives me an idea to try doing Viking period tacos! Totally doable!

@@Lanenofhamilton did the Vikings ever do anything like Pemmican? That would be a super versatile and packable protein fat option if so, but I’m not sure that they did.
This recipe looks amazing, I’m going to get some apples and try my best to do it justice.

Oh you have to let us know how yours comes out! The hard part about Viking cooking is nothing was written down. It's all finds, context, and what else we know was going on at the time. I don't think I've heard of a pemmican type item but I have seen people make this nut/seed loaf that I seem to remember was not really perishable.

@@Lanenofhamilton it was incredible, it’s essentially the only thing I’ve eaten today.

Honestly I think I saw it on the yorvik center recipe page as mixed grains so I went that route too
