I was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder and went through years of CBT. It helped me to understand some things but when I got my autism diagnosis I was told my social anxiety is caused by my social confusion and worry due to my autism. Identifying and coming up with coping thoughts does help. Exposure therapy is evil. It’s meant for things like bird phobia not social anxiety. Forced eye contact can make an autistic person hurt physically. Forcing eye contact is abuse. It’s not that we are afraid of eye contact it is just over stimulating and causes discomfort.

Hah, I remember when I was a kid a psychologist made it her priority to train me to make eye-contact. I wouldn’t even look at a mirror. So that happened. I now live in a world where under-30s can’t, or won’t, make eye contact. They sneak stares in before you turn your attention on them. Then their eyes slide down and sideways. Irony.

I just started therapy b/c during research I checked a lot of autism boxes.. after 2 visits by therapist (who admits he doesn't know much about autism) says is most likely just really bad social anxiety b/c a person with autism would no notice they are having anxiety and avoid it???? this is not what I have learned through my research

My life has been hurt by anxiety or more to the point my inability to handle it. Mentors can help, but may manipulate too. I avoid a lot of stuff which makes me feel inadequate. Life with austism is hard & it never lets up.

Often autistic adults manifest their anxiety somatically as health issues. There is a high tendency to be unable to understand the feeling of anxiety for autistic people which then comes out in the body. Autistic people have a very loose relationship with their own bodies which is not seen in NT populations.

That would explain alot. I asked myself today after a total meltdown, if I maybe have anxiety.
My heart rate is always way too high, I'm 28 and I've high blood pressure. My stomach is a constant struggle.
      Well, something to research again.

Agoraphobic here for 27 years and discovered last year that I have autism at 51 yrs old, well, that changed my whole world and explained why those 9 months in a phobia clinic in 1999 were useless. I am relieved to finally know I have autism, I am utterly pissed off that all those years of useless therapies and multiple misdiagnosis have been for nothing. Still agoraphobic, but I realised a difference once i found out about the diagnosis.
I was afraid of the panic attack cause I had no clue why they happened, but when I finally decided to check with my body and surroundings, I realised the whole world was coming at me and every noise , movement and smell was building a massive anxiety I did not detect due to being 24/7 on high alert by default, so the panic attack always literally attacked me and I had no way to see it coming, except for this time, I felt it coming and I felt why it was coming and i managed to suppress it that day for the first time with a lot of effort, cause I now understood how it happened . Still agoraphobic but more optimistic but that covers just that problem, the rest however is doable now that I know, besides, I have nothing left around me anyway, so the only way is up. all the other difficulties be damned
Anyway, locking myself at home for 27 years turned out to be not cause of panic attacks but rather not being able to detect the onslaught of sensory stimulans . I just had one default feeling and that was anxiety and being on high alert constantly. Now is the question, how do i solve it??? Cause I sure as hell am tired of trying everything that did not work over and over again. Exposure therapy?? yeah i see now how that failed. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy? I sure felt pretty stupid and dumb after so many fails. It's the understanding that is crucial
I did learn to speak 4 languages, quantum physics , painting , name it and I pretty much learned it in the comfort of my home. Now i started to come back in the world, socialise online, started a YT channel as a personal challenge I've finally made a beginning after all those years of being isolated, but I'm ready to really live now, though

I have lived with autism all my life and just found out I have it at 30 years old, it all makes sense to know and I would have never known if my third child wasn't born. Edit: had to edit mistakes in spelling providing proof mistakes happen and I am not perfect either.

I never get my condition diagnose, but i think i am autistic. I always feel discomfort, extreme discomfort around people to the point that i get trouble breathing and i had to get away from people. I'm still running away from people at the age of 33, and that is the reason why i work online. Even interacting with client online also a very uncomfortable things for me, but i need money to live... I always find its hard to put words together to talk to people. To start conversation. My mind always went blank. If i can figure what to say, i would be too anxious to speak it out, my voice become so soft or shaky, and it always a short conversation, because my mind couldnt just process what else to say at the moment. I remember when i was a kid, when we gathered at our grandparents house for holidays, I always sit quietly and very stiffly in front of the TV the whole day. While even my younger siblings, though they were shy at first, they would eventually manage to go play with our cousins, and me, i just couldnt. its like a mental block. I would worried what to say. or what to say next. what to do. But even for my younger siblings, everything just seems so natural. Like they knew how to socialize like we all knew how to breath. So I knew I was a weird one since i was a kid. the school, was nightmare. My parents think im just shy person, so they used to make me look after their small shop, to practice being around people, which also a nightmare for me...

For me I become anxious when around large groups of people. I start figgeting and walk faster to get away from these groups. Apparently I've been assessed by a group of people who follow me around. I also get anxious when I meet new people and go to New places. It's at its worse when I don't know what to expect because it's not in my routine.

It's unfortunate society has much psychological barbarism (mass media, vast dark-triad personality types in leadership, etc) to encourage anxiety and it's perhaps even MORE crucial to consistently exercise (especially build muscle tissue) on a daily basis to trigger compensatory neuroplasticity to defend against such.

The microphones are hard panned left and right, there is no mono signal for a center channel.
If you are sitting in the direct center between the two speakers who are both directly to your sides, while one speaker is talking in your right ear, your left ear is only hearing a mouth noise solos from the non speaker.
Sonically, it emulates the room, but not from the perspective of the listener. To the viewer, the person in front of the camera is the center focus and should be centered in the audio, 3D stereo seperation only makes sence in a wide angle shot with lots of speakers placed specifically in the stereo field for effect, like mic'ing around a drum kit for swing and stereo delays.
If you're an autistic anxious audio engineer with OCD, this is a masterclass on how to ruin what might be an amazing performace with poor mixing.

I live with my sister who has a 6 yr old son with autism. By the time me, my husband and 2 teen kids moved in my nephew was over his social anxiety without eye contact. However there are some people he has anxiety whenever around them. My husband is one of those ppl. But his anxiety around my husband has gotten out of control ever since the living room tv broke. No one goes in the living room anymore. My sister has a tv in her room where she and my nephew sleeps so basically he started to never want to come out of the room. He is obsessed with playing video games too since then. Before the tv broke we all socialised in the kitchen and living room with no anxiety issues from my nephew. He'd play/draw/watch tv in the living room, ate at the kitchen table & played with his toys in the play area. His fear & anxiety is something we are having a hard time helping him get over. It's become so bad that he will run and hide in my sister's room to avoid even seeing or hearing my husband. It's so bad that even when we tell him uncle isn't home he will come out BUT not before asking several times "where's uncle?" I have to admit that his anxiety & fear of my husband was started when we (my sister and I) used that fear of my husband to prevent/stop his bad behavior. Every time he behaved badly we'd tell him "do I need to call uncle?" And just that would stop his bad behavior. We even had my husband record an audio of him telling my nephew to behave for use when he misbehave in public. But we also had audio of my husband congratulating good behavior. Fastfoward it's been almost a year since we've used my husband as a defense since he's got to the point of isolating himself. I know we created a monster but we want to fix it of course because he can't go on like that.

I heard my sister trying to get my nephew to eat at the dinner table last night. She kept telling him "remember what we talked about? Uncle is not a scary man". I think my sister means well but I think she gets frustrated too quick with him and give up whatever she started to do with him; which was getting him to the kitchen table. I think we will have to start involving my husband to have him do those things with him to show that it's ok. Would you suggest that too?

@Donkey You have no clue what goes on in my house. My husband and I love my nephew and we recognize that's his hiding is not ok. Plus I already said before that we. feel it's not ok so keep your disrespectful comments to yourself. My nephews therapist even said to use it to our advantage but turn that negative stigma into a positive for him. They said to include my husband to be more present in fun activities so he doesn't always associate my husband with "bad".
Also bad behavior is classified as many things but some are pretty extreme and completely unacceptable some of which I did not want to share but I will to satisfy your curiosity. My nephew often does not listening to my sister or trying to cut/stab me and my daughter with a scissors for no reason or stab my dog with a pencil again for no reason or try to touch my private areas or just perverted things period. All that stopped immediately when my husband came back from working in another state.
And just so you and others know I took the advice of the previous commenter who has autism who read my comments still managed to recognize my issue and understood me and who also was super respectful and provided me awesome advice that is working!
