    OEMs don’t want to admit they are incentivized to squash EV sales as they lose their biggest revenue center… maintenance. That combined with no profit margin on current EV sales makes it to where no one really wants to, or even can, sell a compelling EV for a profit and then don’t make any money on maintenance after selling it.

    You appear to be missing two important factors:
    Tesla, from their initial mission statement in 2006 intended to come out with increasingly cost effective models. Note that their margin has not fallen with their latest price cuts and that the technology has a long, long way to go to reduce cost of manufacture.
    Also, when looking at scooter transportation, we neglect to consider the medical and disability costs due to an accident. Consider instead that same family traveling by robo-taxi for $0.50 per mile while breathing clean air and reduced noise. This is the affordability entry that Tesla is repositioning to address. Try out FSD version 12 before assuming that autonomous driving is in some distant future!

    When Tesla announced 10% layoffs I asked people who work for BYD, GAC AION, and two of their suppliers what it means, is Tesla in trouble? Everybody had the same thoughts that even Tesla does it every year, this layoff is too big to be ignored. Something is up. From what I heard and read between the lines, they are a bit scared because the main reason must be that Tesla has figured out how to make cars faster and cheaper, and will lower their prices again. The strange thing was that they were planning to hire more workers to sell more cars, and that they were actually supply-constrained. In the ICE market, it is the opposite, some factories were already running below 30% capacity.

    loved every second of this episode. One host 3 guests goes very well when the guests are well matched. Would love to hear this quad do industry issues every month. John and Gary together can be a velvet inquisition - very high credibility, but not as much fun. Network structures matter for mobility. The interstate system is a grid - people can go in any direction. But transit systems are often radial they they should also be a grid. Rail technology can already automonously drive all railed vehicles. Combined with satellite communications, control centres, continuous power and battery power, rail lines can be a bare track with the only track-side equipment being that to operate points (track junctions). Bus public transport is a good case for Waymo style autonomous driving. Public transport is likely to become more competitive against private transport once drivers and guards are removed.

    GM still needs to revive Saturn as an experimental brand but this time based around affordable EV's for the masses!

    • @johngraham6506
      @johngraham6506 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sadly, Saturn was just a crappy car with, at the time, a novel sales model - just pay full price, no haggling. I had a friend who loved her Saturn not because of the car but because she just went in and bought it. I reminded her that you can do that with any brand/model of car, just pay full price. Just because Saturn didn't allow haggling on price didn't mean it was making less on cars, it just mean you felt better about buying a car. That is a good thing, but Saturn as an experiment for making cars, really did little in helping cars be better, but did help in coming up with a way for more dealerships to offer no haggle pricing so they too could make more money per car.

    I have recently heard from several family members who have been to dealers because they were interested in EV's. Dealers seem averse to selling their EVs. A Ford dealer insisted that the Mach E has a 200 mile range and the tone was negative. How much of dealer profits from service and maintenance, and parts, is affecting dealer interest in actually selling this technology?
    Manufacturers want to sell EVs but dealers don't want to sell the cars they won't be working on regularly in the future because they need less in nearly every way.
    How badly are dealers inhibiting sales due to this absolute conflict in profit models between OEM's and Dealers of those OEM's?

    The narrative that EV sales are slowing is just being fueled by OEMs who are realizing making quality EVs AND making a profit is almost impossible. Once interest rates come down it’s game over for almost all of them as Tesla will then have iterated to a point where the total quality of build, for a lesser price and a greater profit will have been achieved.

    I haven't figured out why all of this is an all or nothing for ICE and EVs (and hydrogen). Each type of car works for different uses and let's allow the industry to make cars for the different uses, not for how it is propelled. A long distance sales person, sorry, an EV probably just don't make sense until battery charging can be just a few minutes. Around town driving, EV's are perfect. Local deliveries, EVs are perfect. Hydrogen could fill the niche where EV and ICEs aren't great. And, as I recently heard, on Autoline, most of the energy, and carbon emission, produced by an ICE car is created when a car is starting from a stop, once they are moving, they emit very little carbon, Hybrids, while adding complexity to the build process, really make sense - EV to get the car going, ICE to give you the distance. I really don't understand the all or nothing approach. I know it can be expensive for manufacturers to build and maintain two types of engines, but why can't one company focus on meeting a specific need and do it well without having to change what it does because 'If all cars aren't an EV, then we have failed' thought process.

    You act as if Tesla is the only car segment that is demand challenged. Interest rates have hit all the car makers as Elon explained two quarters ago. Tesla and maybe BYD are the only EV manufacturers making a profit on their cars. Tesla’s car business in the future will be a rounding curve in comparison to the other parts of their business like energy and FSD and Robots! Legacy car companies on the other hand have to wind down ICE business at a great cost as they move to EV cars that they are far from making a profit on. Your Legacy guests have the same problem as the Legacy car companies have which is a failure to move forward with the times. The only businesses going straight DOWN in the future are Legacy car companies and all the Legacy talking heads that are reporting on them.
