    The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons is a Game Boy Color game that carries over much of the graphics from Link's Awakening ( tasvideos.org/2076M ). Surprisingly, much of the game engine is completely different and developed by Capcom. In it, the Oracle of Seasons, Din, is kidnapped by Onox, General of Darkness. Link must travel throughout both Holdrum and Subrosia to collect the 8 Essences of Nature, power up the Rod of Seasons, and defeat Onox.
    This game has been attempted by various authors over the past 5 years. Finally, SwordlessLink ( tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/S... ), along with Tompa ( tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/T... ), who joined the project after dungeon 4, beat this legendary game in 1:25:57.22 primarily through the use of pitwalking, Pegasus Seeds, and enemy manipulation. Please see the authors' notes ( tasvideos.org/3442S ) for more details.
    --------
    You can watch the complete run played back on console ( • TAS - Legend of Zelda:... ).

    This game is so well programmed that a lot of the TAS just looks like normal play.

    • @mads_in_zero
      @mads_in_zero 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think people looking at speedruns and going "there's no glitches, so it's Good Programming" is a bit of a misconception among speedrunners and fans of. Like, everyone knows Pokemon Red and Blue has a lot of exploits. But if you think about it, when's the last time you saw anyone manage to _crash_ those games?
      Glitch Pokemon are the result of the game reading garbage data, and it keeps truckin' along. In my mind, that's a form of good programming too.
      Also, if you need a TAS to crash/break a game, it can still be a well programmed game. If you need to do things that are impossible for humans to do to break a game, then the game's still doing its job. It's designed to be played by normal humans, after all.

    • @thunderaxe31
      @thunderaxe31 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mads_in_zero It's true that exploits can be occasionally found even in well-written games, but just because a game doesn't crash casually, it doesn't mean that it's well-written. Pokemon Red and Blue programming was in fact absolute garbage, to the point that they wouldn't be functioning at all if Satoru Iwata didn't personally join the team at some point, to reorganize and restructure the whole game code. Read this article for more details: collider.com/pokemon-games-satoru-iwata-influence/

    Pitwalking wherever abusable just to take shortcuts. In particular, in this game's Sword and Shield dungeon where pitwalking is required to skip a major section of the dungeon, including the hyper slingshot. Pegasus seed and roc's cape just aren't enough. Something only a TAS is capable of here, unlike in link's awakening.

    • @TompaA
      @TompaA 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, that skip can be done without pitwalking with a perfectly executed jump with a bomb boost. It is done in real time runs even.

    • @Pika250
      @Pika250 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nintendo should really make another one of these games for the Switch, the usage of overhead and side-scroller mechanics were pretty unique. Also I would have killed to have that sprint and vaulting ability in the other older games.

    • @Joel97_
      @Joel97_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      While you are in between two tiles, the game tries to 'suck you in' depending on which one you are closer to, you go into one or the other, but with frame perfect inputs, you can just be between both tiles and keep moving. I believe this is not humanly possible in RTA.

      That's why it's called TAS; Tool Assisted Speedrun. I'm not firm with these mechanics, but as far as I remember, it digs into the game data, where you can also reduce the enemies' reaction a bit, depending on the frame rate.
