    I grew up close to a large international airport too and used to head there with friends from the mid 90’s onwards as they had a great selection of arcades there. Got some vivid memories of playing Killer Instinct, Daytona, Sega Rally (the multiplayer sit-in car versions!), Primal Rage, the Aliens game with the mounted lightgun (Alien 3 I think?), Mortal Kombat etc, etc. The airports back then were actually encouraged as places to visit for non-travellers with lots of shops and restaurants, kind of a “bring the kiddies along for the day and watch the planes take off” sort of thing lol - all changed after 9/11 as you mentioned though and seems unbelievable looking back now. Good times though!

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is wild right? The airport I mentioned was also an old army base so there were a lot of military craft and cool things like that to see. Yours sounds like almost a mall with the benefit of air travel, lol. Also sounds like a legit arcade with all of those top games. Weird.

    • @Shadowbann3d
      @Shadowbann3d 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ScarletSprites It really was a legit and impressive arcade within an airport (there were 2 arcades actually) - I was fairly blessed as a youngster with having a good selection of arcades close-by. I still live near the airport (London Gatwick) but it’s all changed now with most of the shops and restaurants beyond the security clearance. No real arcades either sadly!
      I Googled the Alien light gun arcade and it was Alien 3 - the cabinet is an absolute beast! I forgot how cool it was with those big guns.

    Oh my goodness Joe I love all of your nostalgic stories, and I have one for you related to the Rush 'N attack story. About five years ago my Daughter was around eight years old and we were in Six Flags Great Adventure in the arcade area closer to " El Toro"
    We were playing the tower of tickets game and an older gentleman employee came over and started flooding the machine with tokens for us and one other kid to play plus he gave us whatever tickets that he won himself (he was pretty good at the timing of that game) he then let my daughter pick a prise that she wanted which cost more tickets then we had. He told me that when he was younger someone looked out for him in a similar way and he was repaying the favor, it was just a really nice overall experience. On another note I have been absolutely obsessed Metal Slug 2 this past week trying to perfect my game and having a damn good time while doing it. As always thanx for the awesome video.

    I'm really happy that both Tron games are on MiSTer, I restored some original Midway grip controllers some years back for my MAME cabinet and added a push/pull spinner, The MiSTer core supports it perfectly so they are really fun to play with the original style controls. I also really love Moon Patrol, Qbert, and Berserk on MiSTer as well. Like how they simulated the diagonal controls on Qbert for the core.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tron is a pleasant surprise on here as well. My experience with that is mainly via a cocktail version that was at the local Pizza Hut. If I could get a cocktail cab, that would be the one that I would want.

    ROFLMFAO My wifes face when you named pretty much all of my own person faves during this video.... she opens up with "now I know why you like him"... and "OMG you 2 are the same"... LOL. Awesome vid man! Moon Patrol was a personal favorite.... I used to go down to my local Lamppost Pizza to play that one. Every weekend with my friends. I love all the personal stories attached to some of these older Arcade games... Where people were... what they were up to, what games they loved... where they were able to play them which is my personal favorite. In the early 80's I remember going to a laundromat cause they had Dig Dug and Sinistar. I loved those games. Haha. Dude have a great week!

      Thanks so much for sharing your story as well man, haha. It’s so true about having to hit certain places. You had to hear via word of mouth where this stuff was too, otherwise you were just rollin the dice. Glad to hear I have a brother from another mother out there!

      @@ScarletSprites I think the story of how, when, where anyone grew up and played these games is the most interesting stories I've heard. We all have our own personal memories, and I think we need to share them. It adds to the nostalgia and connects our histories. Word of mouth was exactly as you said... I would "hear of a new machine" at INSERT BUSINESS HERE and beeline for that place as soon as I could. I can even remember friends pounding on my door in the morning to let me know the Ms. Pac Man machine at the local Albertsons has been unplugged and scores reset. WE ALL (with fire behind us) headed straight there to get our initials on the top score hahaha. Great damn times... and all the Atari!

    Cool vid, and cool story about Kung Fu Master, your grandnpa, and the airport. It's funny how our childhood obsessions with arcade games never really went away. I mean, most people liked video games as a kid, but people "in the community" really, really loved them. Like, I remember going to the 7-11 to play SF 2 and when I ran out of quarters, I'd just stand there and watch others play for hours. I'd do the same at the grocery store for Final Fight. Don't even get me started on Aladdin's Castle at the mall on Friday nights.

  • @PabstOban
    @PabstOban 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I got a lot to say, which is nothing new, but here it goes!
    I don't play arcades on my MiSTer much, mostly just lag free console games which is what I am into more as they are far more accessible to me (still love arcades).
    What I can do is talk about the games you mentioned... See, for me, what I like about channels like yours and people that are our age is... talking about the games we experienced. Video games are a strange thing. They have a way of imprinting themselves in our memory much like say... a "first" in your life might. "First kiss", "The day you took your driving exam", "the day a loved one died", "Graduation", "That time you got arrested drinking beer on a baseball field"... that kind of stuff.
    You can name almost any game in the history of my life, and I can probably tell you... how I played it, when I played it... and what I thought about it. So that's what I'm going to do with your picks. I think this is what is interesting... trading experiences and relating (or not relating, which can be just as fun).
    Kung Fu - This is a game I actually played first on the NES. My best friend Harry had this game. He was the second kid I knew that had an NES. He was a bit spoiled as an only child, and his parents bought things like GIJoe's, Transformers and Starwars toys on what seemed like a daily basis with no special occasion needed... which made him a pretty exciting friend to have as he always had something new to experience and share. Anyway, KungFu was one of his first NES games, and we couldn't get very far, maybe the 3rd or 4th floor, but we loved it. I didn't know this was an Arcade port till later as It didn't seem to be an arcade I ran into much or pay it much attention due to other games available. So I don't think I ever played this one in the Arcades, but I played a lot of it on the NES.
    Donkey Kong 3 - This I had played in the Arcade. I played a lot of Donkey Kong as the Pizza parlor down the street from me growing up had it, so when I saw Donkey Kong 3... my first thought was... "What was Donkey Kong 2?? Did I miss something? Who cares, this looks awesome!!". I played this in the arcade around the time there was a Donkey Kong Sunday/Saturday morning cartoon... so I might have been what? 6 or 7 years old? I was certain the guy holding the spray guns was Mario because that made sense... but I guess I was wrong all these years.
    Berzerk - Berzerk was a game I first experienced on the 2600. Evil Otto gave me nightmares... I was probably 4-5 years old. I loved that you could shoot a gun at robots... the walls could shock you to death... and if you took too long, this super creepy smiling ball would murder your face with wonton abandon. I ran into the arcade of this for the first time visiting friends far away. They belonged to a pool, which at that age was a new concept. At this pool they had a recreation hall and they had a Berzerk cabinet. I remember when I saw it, it looked familiar, but looking back I didn't think... WOH, This has better graphics! My reaction was probably more... I wish I was taller so I could see it better. I remember waiting for someone to play it to see what Evil Otto looked like. I wasn't disappointed.
    Moon Patrol - Aaaaah Moon Patrol. This one I DEFINATELY played in the arcade first, and I saw this one in several places. We saw this game at Pizza Parlors, laundromats and the Arcade down the street had it at one time. Played and watched people play this one a lot. I didn't play Moon Patrol on the 2600 till much later in life as I didn't know anyone who owned it, but I remember going into some REALLY early mall stores that had displays of early console systems like 2600, Colecovision and Intelevision and seeing this on display for the Colecovision. I only knew one kid who had a Colecovision growing up and it was my brothers friend Marc... he was an asshole, but he had a Colecovision... and I remember playing this, and Smurfs using those colorful "gun" like controllers with trigger buttons... and it was quite an experience. Everyone had a 2600, many people had Intelevisions, but almost nobody we knew had a Colecovision... so seeing it was a real treat and a memorable experience. Anyway, Moon Patrol was awesome, that game really kept you on your toes... things in front of you, things over you, shooting, dodging, jumping... very hectic!
    DoDonPachi - I can't say much about this. I played this for the first time on an emulator when I started getting back into "shooters". I remember watching some TH-cam video of a bullet hell game that looked nearly impossible, but someone beat it. It wasn't DoDonPachi... it was sequel

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have so much I’d like to dig into here. It’s wild how you even remember who the *second* kid was to get a NES. It really speaks to the impact that games and consoles had on us. It’s like you said, name the game and I’ll tell you my life experience with it. It was even a treat to be traveling and find an arcade you weren’t familiar with because, oh my gosh, what treasures are there to discover inside!? It was like a scratch off lottery ticket and finding new games you had t seen before. Of course, you were probably told you were wherever you were to do whatever the thing was you were supposed to be doing. “We didn’t come here to play video games.”

    • @PabstOban
      @PabstOban 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ScarletSprites The first kid I knew that had a NES was my moms friends kid. Divorced parents and the dad worked in New York. No doubt this kid had a Nintendo before I even new what Nintendo was. All I saw was the “robot video game”. This had to be 1985? I was blown away. It wasn’t till maybe a Christmas later kids started getting Nintendo’s. I played everyone else’s Nintendo because we grew up broke, single mom. I got my NES in Christmas of 1988? By then, everyone I knew had a Nintendo. It was like the Atari 2600… the assumption was everyone had one, it was more of a question of which games you had.

    Moon Patrol is still an amazing game and a timeless classic. I play it all the time on Switch and MiSTer and it's my favorite game on the Vectrex. (Known as Vector Patrol.). Also a fan of Donkey Kong 3 and I've never met anyone else that was. Have you ever tried Q*bert 3 on SNES? I think it's fantastic! 👍🏻

      Not only are people not fans of DK3, there’s also a fair amount of backlash for it. It could have very easily been Mario and DK again but they introduced Stanley! I just love the changes while keeping small pieces that tie it to the original.
      I’ll have to checkout QBert 3 again. It’s been a long time.

    I've played through Shinobi Arcade, Last Resort and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo on the MiSTer this year. Most games play better on the MiSTer compared to FBNeo in my experience. For example, when playing Last Resort on FBNeo, if there was slow down I couldn't lock the gun pod. Thankfully this doesn't happen on the MiSTer. Super Turbo, on the other hand, seems to play just as well on FBNeo as on the MiSTer.
    I love the stories, especially the one where the arcade operator gave you a stuffy. Thanks for sharing.

      You do bring up a great point about availability. It’s nice to have options. I still flip over to MAME for stuff not yet available on MiSTer; all those Konami and Midway games. Hopefully we get them more places in time.

    I'LL invest in Mister Once it can give me a true Arcade experience of Batman Forever The Arcade Game. Till then the Mister and its FPGA buzz word is just a fancy way of saying hey its still Emulation just slightly better ! ( I still want the Arcade PCB) But that's just my opinion. Side note, The Tapper Game is awesome my local barcade out here in Los Angeles has it and they do have the Tap handles. That's only way to play that game. Those Tap Handles go for a lot of money these days too on ebay if you want it for your own cab.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That game is an outlier even on the ST-V unfortunately. I can play it with the multicart but it needs the soundboard in order to have audio. I usually just pop in the movie soundtrack. Hopefully one day though we get the ST-V core for this. Arcade systems that unlock multiple titles seems to be the largest draw.
      Agree on the tap handles, I just love that that was a thing.
