    Chris said the underrated, key word: "Standard." We use the tunes by Berlin, Kern, Porter, Rodgers, Gershwin to "measure" players against a standard of reference as well as against many others who have undertaken the same test. Standards also help us make sense of jazz history (Compare Louis' recording of "Body and Soul" w major players up to present), and they give musicians a common language for musical conversations (jam sessions). Chris uses gadgets in addition to standards and great tunes-- but he never lets us forget how the tenor saxophone is best played--musically--like Hawk, Dexter, Stitt, Getz, Trane. "If I should Lose You"" is a passionate tune, influenced by Pucinni and in turn it influenced Walter Davis, Jr., in his writing bebop arias for Blakey's.Messengers throughout the '70s..The rewarded students of this session are the guys who hear the logic and phrasing that communicate the emotive meanings of the song. If ncessary, write the solo down, learn it, play it back along with the recording,. That's how the very best players tackle the mystery of harnessing freedom. As Bill Evans said, It's all about "truth and beauty," nothing else need clutter your mind. ("Originality? Is it even possible? Bill was quoting Keats.)

    JoeHen's Homestretch to finish...lovely. One of my favorite blues to call. Chris had some of his most informative answers in this one. Reaffirming, Inspiring and, naturally, humbling.

    It's easy to forget how next level genius this guy is while listening to him answering questions. His natural unassuming honesty can kinda get you to forget how insightful informed and mind blowing his solos can be. I seem to remember feeling the same way about David Holland. Because understanding this makes me go hey wait some of that shit he just said in passing was (unspeakably heavy) in light of how he can play. Man I am gonna watch this again.

    I am happy to see that all of Jazz Education hasn't strictly gone the way of Barry Harris. Although his re-illumination of bop methodology is a good thing just not the only thing.

    His lick "You know" takes on a tragic tone after the first 100 repetitions. The throwaway line to establish rapport ends up generating a lot of tension, as if he's anxious at sensing the audience might not know.

      Lean McHungry You have a good point, but sometimes I’d rather listen to a great musician grasp at the right words to describe their process than a well-meaning academic perfectly describe a fraction of it

      @@jw_bird That’s a really good point! I feel like this is a problem in Jazz Academia. Professors (at least some of mine) try to completely explain a minor thing in a theoretical way, but oftentimes it can only be really understood if you connect it to the bigger picture.

      Honestly, CP didn't seem like the type of guy to vibe, especially onstage during a masterclass. I think it was more a reaction to his own little flubbed note a couple moments ago.

      He plays on a classic otto link. Probably a 6 or 7 tip opening. I think he plays a mark 6.

      Hey Boris he plays a Selmer Balanced action, costs around 8,000-11,000 dollars, his mouthpiece is a classic Otto link 8* around 1.5 thousand, and Ddario select jazz reeds for about 25$ a box he plays size 3 medium filed.
