  • This term gets thrown around a lot in production and post-production circles, but if you can understand what it is as a colorist, you can grade with more confidence and with more creativity.

    I thought this was going to be some simple entry-level episode. Instead it turned out to be some next level mind exploding episode where yet again I learn something new from Cullen. Thanks, dude!

    Hey all, TH-cam is taking a bit extra today to process the 4K version of this, but they should be done processing for the higher res soon -- hang tight if it hasn't happened yet/the Resolve screen looks blurry!

      That 4k is sure worth the wait. Time to make some coffee first.

    Great video cullen. Usually I at least think of clipping in the normal sense of just regular highlight exposure, but good to think about it from the colorist perspective as well.
    Really helpful, AGAIN, to see how effective your simple node structure is. It really is proving your point that you finish 80% of the look within those first 3 nodes.

    Excellent explainer on the "walls" of Rec 709 and 2020 or whatever boundaries your final deliverable is and how you work/manipulate within those "walls". Never thought of it - the final result needs to be to massaged for a best creative result within those "walls". Excellent thought process. Opens a door inside those "walls".

    Hey Cullen! Could you also get into how the colorspace affects the tools we’re using and display? Would be really cool if you showed your colorspace- and project settings for future videos!

    Looks like they still haven't fixed the bug where the nodes don't load thumbnail information correctly in 18.5 lol. I find that checking "Save Timeline Thumbnails with Project" in my General Options seems to solve it but I just wish it was checked by default.

    Hey Cullen, just wondering why you went with a CST for Color management this time vs using color management at the project level? Was this just to simplify for beginners, or are you preferring this way now? (If so, why?)
    And is this still a Davinci Wide Gamut workflow?
    Thanks. :)

    I have a related question: sometimes the look I like is where one of the colour channels is completely clipping. Is that going to cause a problem for web or cinema delivery?

  • @benmcphee4401

    Hey Cullen, if you’re working in DWG but monitoring in 709, what is your vectorscope (and waveform) showing you? Is that a representation of what’s happening inside of DWG, or what you’re seeing on your output display?

If it’s DWG, doesn’t that mean it’s possible to add too much saturation? If it’s 709, doesn’t that mean you might not be taking advantage of that bigger colour space and worrying about clipping before you actually need to?

    And since DWG is bigger, when it’s converted back down to 709, does it do this perceptually, or does it clip values that fall outside of the 709 container?

    Very informative.
    Is the HSV + gamma wheel fundamentally different than you would get with the Sat-sat curve and bringing it up in the middle?
    Similarly is dropping the far right of the Sat-sat equivalent to HSV and Gain?
    Is there a reason to choose one or the other?

    • @matthewblacklock2972
      @matthewblacklock2972 ปีที่แล้ว

      Using HSV for saturation changes the math that's used to apply the saturation and makes it more subtractive and "filmic" where as saturation increases luminance decreases. Cullen goes into deeper detail here: th-cam.com/video/bAAjyNHDpyo/w-d-xo.html

    • @dronyfilm
      @dronyfilm ปีที่แล้ว

      about the gamma vs curve thing. yes. the main difference is that gamma is a mathematical function, while curves are doing something more random and unpredictable, because it matters where you put the point on the curve and how you tweak the handles. try both options and see which one works better for you.
      the second difference is how the brightness of the image is influenced by both methods. there are differences in the way HSV and HSL calculate saturation and brightnes. The best thing would be to try out both methods again and see for yourself how they differ. there is no right or wrong with this, just personal preference and if it looks good or doesn't
