    Its important to notice, all movies use a given color palette(and lighting), wich in itself gives a prelimenary look to the film, gives a distiction how the grade will (in a good case) compliment the whole process. So for example for BvS low light looks you cant use Whedons fan edit level lighting AND grade.

    • @Deedzproductionz
      @Deedzproductionz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Do you think movies keep that color palette for ever scene? Or just for certain ones? Can you have different color palettes in a film

    • @Chris-Chan
      @Chris-Chan ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Deedzproductionz im no expert, but I’d assume it doesn’t change. I’m sure there’s exceptions like slightly tweaking your palette in certain scenes, but I don’t know about changing it completely

    2 things that could seem contradictory to one another.
    1) This video was super impressive from the perspective of how much one can AFFECT and CHANGE an image after the fact, and how much of a complex combination is needed to create what, at a glance, seems like a simple "look." I'm a writer, director, and sometimes editor, who sometimes has to color grade and it's a good reminder of how large the gap is between myself and people who REALLY know what they're doing.
    2) I didn't find either image to be particularly evocative of "The Batman." First shot got closer than 2nd shot, but still maybe only got 30-40% of the way there.

    Cool take on the Batman look! From a colorist point of view I would suggest you to get the look as close as possible without fancy tools. Grading by selections makes really hard to grade a project consistently from shot to shot. Overall I really appreciated the video. 🙏🏻

      Exactly! I'm looking at this and thinking; 'DAM, just give me Windows Moviemaker!' But seriously, it does appear to be not only a tedious task, but like you said, CONSISTENT. It is MUCH better and more time management to do your best to get that color or look during filming as much as you can and IF there are any color tweaks, then make sure you have a STORYBOARD that explicitly shows those tweaks and work off of that. - James D. Watkins, artistic director of PHOENIX PRODUCTIONS.

    It's so interesting to me that we went from, 20 years ago, shooting on film and doing a digital intermediate in post, then delivering on film... to now, shooting on digital and doing a film intermediate in post, then delivering on digital. Fascinating little role reversal that's happened.

    i would like to add that most feature films also have a certain look depending on the brand of camera and its digital sensor, the brand of lens and the glass it has, and even the type of lights and lighting setup it has as well.
    in the example of the batman, greig fraser utilized digital arri alexa cameras and cooke lenses; both unique artifacts and optics with infamously characteristic looks. fraser is also a big champion of using led lights as well. (for more info watch In Depth Cine's vid on the cinematography style of Greig Fraser

    I think it's important to note in this video that you try to create a "high contrast" grade when in reality, the batman was very low contrast. The difference is that it just had a more striking switch between darks and lights. This awesome video by Waqas Qazi goes in detail into the scopes from the Batman trailer and if you look at them the contrast is very low (with most of the scopes residing in the bottom half). So in reality if you want to emulate the Batman look both shoot in a more low key environment and keep your contrast low. Upping the contrast, like done here, actually strays quite a bit from what the color grade was attempting to do, which is look dirty and lived in.
    the video by Waqas for anyone wondering (its great if you want a deep dive): th-cam.com/video/CybPMBAkruQ/w-d-xo.html

    • @kokoloko12398
      @kokoloko12398 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      At first look, we can say this is low contrast, but technically, no! The bleach bypass technic is used precisely to increase contrast without affecting saturation. Check the scopes of the examples in this video. They are appropriately placed in the bottom half, similar to Batman. But then, it all depends on how was shot the footage you are working on. Increasing contrast will push midtones and shadows down. The highlights must be set adequately during shooting. We cannot cheat the lighting.

      @@Rogeras32 David Cole used bleach bypass on The Batman, as he did on Dune. He explained that in an interview for Filmmakers Academy website and on the video linked below (around 28:30). Victor Stone (Cyborg) cries because his daddy wouldn't watch his game. 😂 His mother dies in a car accident because she's trying to comfort his bitch ass instead of watching the road. 😂 Victor goes on to blame his father for what happened.😂😂😂🤣🤣
      Imagine you're Joss Whedon, someone gives you this material and 40 days to make a good movie out of it. 😂

    1:45 can you explain why despite the bleach bypass the movie still doesn’t have real black? Do people like it more like that? Why it seems many modern directors use a dark grey as the darkest color so much these days?

    This can't be how they do it in a feature film, is it? I mean, it would take about ten years in post, to finish a 90 minute movie..

    I don't think I have ever seen a Resolve tutorial at that pace. I think some of your viewers might have lost the tutorial at some point in there. There is of course ( like everything in Resolve) tons of ways to get to the same result. Just so people know that. Especially when it comes to look recreations. Not that your technique is not valid. In my opinion the same results could be done in less steps ( simpler ).
    I was talking about your channel the other day and I said that in the past it seemed liked I was watching a great trailer to a movie, but can't go see the movie. You probably have considered this, but a video like this could have a secondary video where the Resolve tutorial could have a deep dive with a slower and more teachable approach for people to follow along. Seems like you have built the shell, and it would be an opportunity to expand on your videos. Just a suggestion, since you have already laid it out and done all the planning.
    Hopefully the wedding videographers won't be using this look. But I have a feeling that ome, might.
