Your rod choice is way off. We chase big fish off rocks with 140g poppers etc and the biggest rod we have is 10foot. 13foot is absolutely ridiculous unless your bait fishing off a beach .
Gear that’s best for this application is more like that used for Jetty fishing, like what was already mentioned, 10-10 1/2’ rod. You could also probably get by with gear intended for mid size Swimbaits, 8-9’ rods.
Love the infor, easy to understand even for a beginner I have to say the video editing has come a long way, more and more professional Suggestion on these type of tutorial video, how about a split screen , so you can see the lure and the action of the rod at the same time

No offense bro but you are using the popper the wrong way. You're supposed to keep the rod tip low and twitch youre rod to the side because the popper needs to stay in the water not flying. No offense🙂

Thicc Boi no in general, but yeah the nicer ones should have the 24hr , but check online first. Local tackle shops will have them 100%. Especially in a resort town like he stayed in
I ask cause ive read up online and i have some individuals claiming that no license is required for shore fishing. The townsfolk tell me mixed messages. Some say you do need ome and others that you dont. I havent been able to find a clear answer. At resorts, i usually just find deep sea fishing excursions for sale. Thanks though.
I’ve also fished Riviera Maya shoreline. No great results, lots of needlefish and houndfish extremely dangerous. No tarpon, no snook. Some grunts and cudas. The shore is razor sharp and I don’t think we would be able to pull out a big fish. My father got broken off several times running 80# fluoro leader. It is a beautiful place to fish, but not sure it is the best when compared to Florida shores.
If you tactical clip straight to the sp minnow and eliminate the stock split-ring, you might like the action better without having to re-tie on your leader..nice new rod! 👍

Thanks for the tips mate, ive only just started using lures and plastics and never seem to catch anything.. I think the live actions would be the best for me to just slowly reel in and stop every now and then as the popping of plastics hasn't caught me much so far.. I always take a second rod and just chuck a bloodworm on a hook and end up catching a flathead or some small bream but would love to just be able to chuck a lure on and get a few fish! Great video, one suggestion, tge rod that you are using is to big for throwing popper, it can be difficult to work out the popper, I used that same popper with a 7ft rod medium heavy brand Tsunami and aslo cast very far and you can popped the popper the way you have to popped it. I personally can’t fish with a rod over 9 foot off the rocks.. just doesn’t make sense to me. I do just fine and I don’t get tired. Throw the baby fish back! Especially the Jacks. You’re Popper technique needs a bit more of a pop and splash and a bubble trail. But it’s very hard to do that on a 13 foot surf rod. Get yourself a popping rod and I’m sure you’ll be catching more. 🤙🏻
awesome video. you've got a really good rod too must cast a mile with the lure with that setup. i personally prefer softbaits but its tricky to match the weight to make it swim naturally but once you get it its worth it. my favourite softbait styles the weedless style. really a hassle wen getting snagged

Dude this set up is really expensive it’s cool to show but most wont be able to afford it especially if you only saltwater fish a few times a year

I use a $30 abu garcia reel and a $30 ugly stick catfish and i love to use poppers on it.
Do not waste money on an Ugly Stick. There are much better rods for not much more money.
I use an 8 ft Penn Battalion surf rod paired with a 4000 size Penn btl 2. (Around $200)

13 foot rod is crazy long for poppers, especially on the rocks. 10 for should be considered max length, 7’9 -8’8 are ideal for poppers & stickbaits.

I disagree. That popper was designed for surf fishing. The rod he’s using is fine for distance casts from the beach with that kind of popper.

You can make your own. Literally just buy fresh/frozen squid and chuck it in a bucket of salt. It's better fresh but lasts for ages if you salt it.
My dad used to catch a lot of stripers with the bucktail lure.

That phenix rod is a surface iron rod. It’s longer so it’s Made to fish here in SoCal with a lure called the surface iron
