Guitar preference is subjective. We can all notice when someone is great (i.e. Jimmy and Stevie) but when it comes to the best technically, Mr. Hindrix and Mr Vaughan are among the best no matter who anyones favorite is, we can all admit their both out of this world.
This is S.O.P. for Stevie. The rare footage is of him NOT breaking a string. His guitar tech was standing right there with the white strat in hand for "when it happens". This has become to be known as the smoothest guitar swap on film
For me, I love Jimmy, but I prefer Stevie. It's just a cleaner, richer sound with the gauge of strings he used and his playing. For me, he is the GOAT. Side note, My brother was at the concert he died at, he still has the ticket stub.
1983 Austin City Limits Live sits on stage and starts Lenny after a few bars the guitar is muddy sounding Stevie stops on live TV and turns and tells monitor board engineer how to set up and board settings ,turns back and starts again this time everything is crisp and bright and the camera has been on him all the way through it 4 ft away from him and he never lost his cool ,and the finger work is legendary!!!
I feel this way -- Stevie is definitely my top fav. player, but we all have our favorites according to our peronal taste. To say any one player is the THE greatest above all others is just not a valid statement - because there have just been too many incredible players to say any single one is the GOAT. Personally I LOVE Stevies playing and saw him twice, i think we all have our GOATS and Stevie is mine -- but the fair way to look at it is hes (one of) THE very best of all time, and he deserves to be (one of) the greatest of all time just like a handfull of others do, there has to be room for more than one in this category. That being said, even with a broken string he played a first class solo then him and his top guitar tech did that amazingly smooth guitar swap without missing a beat, one of best ive ever seen. RIP Stevie, we all miss you so much.
Saw him 3 times. He did this during every show. Brilliant musician and showman. And Reese Wynans is a fantastic keyboardist. And Rene Martinez was an awesome guitar tech. All 3, the GOAT.
Kudos to Stevie's longtime guitar tech Rene Martinez on that smooth guitar switch. Rene was always in the wings waiting with another guitar for Stevie when he broke a string. Because Stevie used heavy strings, he had so much extra pressure on them with his strong hands bending them, that they often broke. BTW, Jimi Hendrix was Stevie's hero. He kept a picture of Jimi and his signature in his wallet. But Stevie's favorite guitarist was always his big brother Jimmie Vaughan.
The best thing about SRV playing Jimmy is that he absolutely respected Jimmy and that shows in the way he plays. More like a tribute than trashing his music like so many others have.
Stevie Ray had a super guitar tech that traveled with him. I read how before a concert a heavy metal rack holding the big powerful lights fell onto Stevie's guitars breaking all of them. His guitar tech swapped some parts between them and got a couple working in time for the show.
Yeah, Stevie almost always started out with his Number One guitar (the beat-up Strat) and would switch out with Scotch (the second guitar in this video) when Number One popped a string. He also played Charley a lot, especially during the song "Life Without You," written for his friend Charley Wirz who made the Charley Strat-style Danelectro guitar for him in 1984. If you watch the Texas Flood video from the 1989 Inaugural "Celebration of Blues" gig, you'll see Stevie pops a string on Number One and replaces it with Scotch and then is back playing Number One when he pops a string on Scotch. Rene was constantly restringing and refretting Stevie's guitars 'cause Stevie was just that physical a player.
@@docbearmb String broke at 4:36, during the full shot. You heard the dead note when the string broke. 4:45, when they went back to the guitar shot, you saw the string flopping and Stevie Ray kept playing. At the end of the bridge, you saw Stevie Ray look over his shoulder. That was a signal to Rene Martinez(Stevie Rays guitar handler and a hell of a player himself) to bring Number 2. The switch took exactly 4 bars. By the end of the song, Number 1 was restrung, tuned and back in its stand, ready to be played. This was from his second Austin City Limits performance. October 10, 1989.
I'll bet you that Stevie Ray Vaughan liked Jimi Hendrix's guitar playing better than his own. He idolized him, with good cause. This song sounds to me like straight up barrel house blues.
It's kind of better that way... the "waaait, WHAT??" moment is just so much fun. A similar thing happened with Jake from Greta Van Fleet: he was playing guitar behind his head, and got it caught in his hair when he tried to bring it back. He managed to still play it well enough, while a tech helped untangle things, that one viewer who had looked away didn't notice anything wrong and only found out about the mishap when reading others' comments. Then there was the time Adrian from Iron Maiden fell on his back when he tripped on a cord, and he kept playing from the floor. Good times, good times!
Love!!!!!!!!!! I always think of Jimi Hendrix as Rock, Stevie as Blues...both great! I have read that SRV broke strings on the regular, so he was always prepared to switch guitars.
Jimi's step sister and her husband have taken over his entire catalogue of music and any images of him and left his brother(by blood) and turned it into their own industry! By the way, Stevie broke on his guitar, that's why he had to change guitars. 71 year old white guy. P.S., It's good to see so many brothers on TH-cam appreciating the talents of these two great musicians. God bless them and all of you!
I Love the guitar started going to concerts in 1974 went to see every great guitarist i could in all styles and genres at least 250 different ones. My top 3 all time Jimi Hendrix no. 3 wish i could have seen him live might have been no.1. Stevie Ray Vaughn no.2 and the best of them all Roy Buchanan. Check out "Roy's Bluz" 1976 from Austin city limits. Roy was the best and also the most soulful when he would play "sweet dreams" or" the messiah will come again" I would be weeping.
Always hear influences of other guitarists in SRV playing more than Jimi-except when Stevie does a Hendrix song. Love SRV vibrato-shakes the heck out of his guitars
Stevie was a huge fan of Jimi Hendrix, me too! Because of some dispute with the record company Jimi's family wasn't getting any money from royalties from his records. They asked Stevie Ray to play guitar on new recordings with Jimi's voice. He laid it all out just like Jimi had done. He knew just how to play it exactly like Jimi. He cut his teeth on Jimi 100%!!!! Any recording of Jimi nowadays, Stevie Ray is playing. Jimi's family gets the money just like they should have from the beginning.
He broke a string. Before you make up your mind could I suggest checking out Gary Moore. There's a Hendrix cover he does " Red House ". You would be depriving yourself of experiencing one of the greats. Gary was born in Northern Ireland in 1952 and passed away in 2011.. He played with Skid Row, Thin Lizzy, Colosseum II, and otthers. He finally settled on electric blues and was incredible. Thank you.
Yes we can love them both, if Stevie was alive he would agree with you that Jimmi was the best. Read a book about his life, he loved Hendrix played his records over & over to learn his technique on the guitar as a young child & as a teen. No ego at all, always & I mean always gave others credit, his brother, Alber King, Muddy Waters, & Jimmi Hendrix. Love your thoughtful reaction. Please react to "Leave My Little Girl Alone". R.I.P. Jimmi, Stevie.
LOVE ME SOME SRV!! His band, Double Trouble, collaborated with other acts - the one I'd like your reaction to is Storyville (particularly "Don't Make Me Cry). Keep up the amazing work and as always, thanks for the music.
IMO, this whole notion of 'Who Is The Best' gets lost on the actual music. Why not just appreciate them for who they are & what they gave us. I really like SRV & consider him to be the Best, but that doesn't mean that I don't like to listen to: Garcia, BB King, Albert King, Buddy Guy, Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Clapton ( who said SRV was the best Player on the Planet ) JJ Cale & let us not forget the new generation of Blues Players who were inspired by SRV: John Mayer, Gary Clark Jr., Kenny Wayne Shepherd to just mention a few. Listen to this audio of Clapton & SRV: th-cam.com/video/mOJAwJA6IKgI/w-d-xo.htmlMO, one of the best songs of 2 players, neither trying to upstage the other, just 2 good pickers having some fun...BTW, listen to the crowd when Clapton introduces a " ...Very dear friend of mine..." & how they get even louder when SRV gets his lead break...Think they were trying to compete or were they just 2 good friends who enjoyed playing with each other? My point is, forget this nonsense about who is the Best & just the enjoy the Music, esp. those who brought it to us...!
I prefer not to think of one being better than the other (although being born and raised in Austin TX probably makes me biased towards SRV). Anyway, I prefer to think of them together somewhere jamming together. Somewhere no strings ever break. No TV producers ever signal for them to wrap it up. Somewhere they don't have to label what they play.
No doubt Jimmy and Stevie are both great, love them both. In my opinion and I've seen them both; I think Jimmy is much stronger as a writer and Stevie is stronger as a guitarist. Really.... they're great at both but that's just my opinion. Thanks for the reaction!!!!!
I get the feeling that Jim I would’ve went experimental, as well as revert to delta blues. Stevie I think would’ve stayed the course. Both would’ve joined other great musicians at times, but remained in artistic control if possible.
What could Jimmy have done with the same technology that Stevie had at his disposal. Plus, credit to those folks in the shadows, like the guy helping him make the 🎸 switch...
@DramaSydETV love your reactions, you've got a cool sense of humor. Your facial expression at the guitar switch was priceless. Keep up the great work. Dude, you can have your favorite, we all do, we can also appreciate the skill of the other artists without turning it into a contest.
I have read so many times about how Jimmie influenced Stevie, and there is no denying that. However, hardly anyone talks about the fact that Jimmie said he was also heavily influenced by some of the greats that came before him, and there is sure nothing wrong with that either. Every great has that special creator that has touched them somehow. Both Jimmie and Stevie were both total blessing to this world...
I admired Jimmie, he was innovative and rock. I love SRV but I love the blues. My preference. Stevie would probably say Jimmie was best. He revered those who came before him.
Dude, Jimi is also my favorite with SRV coming right after. I agree, can't we just love them both? Jimi was 27 when he died. Have you heard the Electric Ladyland or Axis Bold As Love albums? My favorite guitarists after those two are: Jimmy Page, Duane Allman, Johnny Winter, David Gilmour, Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore, Peter Green, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton. There are lots more great ones of course. Check out Gary Moore doing Still Got The Blues live. And see what you can do (Patreon, Vimeo, other platforms?) to share more Jimi with us if you can. (I saw him live when I was 14)
I know what this song is about. Last 4th of July in NYC a big van pulled up across the street and I'm pretty sure it was a load of kids going to the beach picking up a few more kids, but some kids got out of the van to stretch a bit and this one gorgeous Hispanic girl in a bikini, somebody's sister I'm sure, about 16 years old, twerked in the middle of the street for all us porch people blazing on a hot day off. She had it all shaking! She knows the power she wields. God bless all the little sisters, especially that one! (For the record, I wasn't evil about it. Just enjoyed the show and was happy to see that some self evident truths haven't been completely extincted by those in control who think humanity and its nature needs a boot in its brain. CHICKS ROCK!)
That guitar was already begging for mercy. The string going was its breaking point !
he broke a string and changed so smooth that most people didn't notice
He had a lot of practice!
And those are fuckin 13s
Even guitarists don't notice
Break a string switch out guitars and not miss a beat simply the best.
Jimmy Hendrix was srvs idle
Stevie is the best. There will never be another Stevie.
Goes to show that broken strings are no match for SRV! Never missed a beat...love it!
Stevie Ray, Hendrix, Skydog; all fantastic and all gone way too soon. What magic these guys could have made if they were still here another 50 years.
Guitar preference is subjective. We can all notice when someone is great (i.e. Jimmy and Stevie) but when it comes to the best technically, Mr. Hindrix and Mr Vaughan are among the best no matter who anyones favorite is, we can all admit their both out of this world.
If you didn't see it, you'd never know it happened. Just amazing. Truly a one of a kind.
🤗haha I know I've watched this video 100 times and I STILL zone out and miss the guitar switch! Didn't see it this time until you went back to it❤️
This is S.O.P. for Stevie. The rare footage is of him NOT breaking a string. His guitar tech was standing right there with the white strat in hand for "when it happens".
This has become to be known as the smoothest guitar swap on film
Ol' buddy on the keys ain't no joke either!
Double Trouble -- the pedestal for the guitar god to stand on!
Yes! He was perfect.
Seriously! smdh
This is such a groove. "Can't we just love them both" yesss!
For me, I love Jimmy, but I prefer Stevie. It's just a cleaner, richer sound with the gauge of strings he used and his playing. For me, he is the GOAT. Side note, My brother was at the concert he died at, he still has the ticket stub.
My cousin was there too, so jealous

very much enjoyed your reaction
Sensational..a legend..nothing better then Stevie Ray Vaughan and his band....Wow..RIP Stevie
Yes Michael. We absolutely can love them both, and most of us do.
There will never be another like Stevie

Jimi opened the door and Stevie Ray kicked it off the hinges
Love them both❤️ you hear a lot of Buddy Guy in SRVs music because he was SRVs mentor.
The best thing about SRV playing Jimmy is that he absolutely respected Jimmy and that shows in the way he plays. More like a tribute than trashing his music like so many others have.

This is why God invented the guitar tech. Smooth as you like and not a beat missed.
His guitar tech was like a Pitt Boss‼️
Stevie seemed like he was showing off he was so good. We suffered a great loss when we lost him. RIP
He broke a string AND still played around it.....Wirhout a skip of a note...THAT my friend is pure musicianship...
React to SRV Live in Daytona Beach in 1987
Looking out the window and Ain’t gonna give up on love
So bad ass,As is the whole concert
The guitar tech who made that switch happen was Rene Martinez. He came out of retirement to work with John Mayer.
Interesting! I was thinking about how that moment is only possible with TWO professionals... :-)
👍👍 you’ll get me every time with Stevie. Would love to hear more Allman Brothers soon too.
Stevie breaks a string on the first guitar @ 4:45ish
You can see it's broken at 4:16. But I think I heard it break at 4:05 (not certain). No big deal for Stevie - just keep playing.
Yeah, Stevie almost always started out with his Number One guitar (the beat-up Strat) and would switch out with Scotch (the second guitar in this video) when Number One popped a string. I saw Stevie before he got sober and after... And no comparison at all how much better he was sober.. His AA talk here on YT is so amazing.
I'll bet you that Stevie Ray Vaughan liked Jimi Hendrix's guitar playing better than his own. He idolized him, with good cause. This song sounds to me like straight up barrel house blues.
Part of his magic..
Knowing when to put in the licks BUT
knowing when less is more!!!
Dang, Stevie! Love your reactions, great voice for this work. Cheers
Saw you had your eyes closed i said "he's missing it"!!😵..lol..glad you ended up catching the guitar switch! Cant wait for the next Stevie Ray💞💞💞
It's kind of better that way... the "waaait, WHAT??" moment is just so much fun.

Hendrix was stevie's greatest influence he used to say
When i hear srv playing i get goosebumps n smile😁,but then i get sad n shed a tear cause he left us so damn early😢

Never see that done so smoothly by anyone else, damn, but also you have to give credit to his guitar tec..
Sick piana solo

The keyboardist is Reese Wynans.....enjoyed him as much as SRV, he was killing it. He is now with Joe Bonamassa and still killing it!
Oh... and I don’t wanna live in a world where there can’t be enough love for SRV AND Jimi! ❤️❤️
You got to love them both !
Always hear influences of other guitarists in SRV playing more than Jimi-except when Stevie does a Hendrix song. Love SRV vibrato-shakes the heck out of his guitars

Was fortunate to have seen him 6 times and his last show in California 2 months before his death

He was STILL soloing w/a broken string. Like a trumpet player still soloing with a stuck valve, or a set player w/only one stick. Ridiculous.
You are an aware musician in a sea of oblivious "reactioners." ❤
YEAH BABY! Smooth criminal! Broke a string and switched guitars so fast!
My fave “bust a move “ song 😎. An old friend back in the day said “man you WAS little sister”! Oh yeah. I was!
Yes we can love them both, if Stevie was alive he would agree with you that Jimmi was the best. Love em both! ! !
I love them both
Yup...ya gotta say WOW
LOVE ME SOME SRV!! His band, Double Trouble, collaborated with other acts - the one I'd like your reaction to is Storyville (particularly "Don't Make Me Cry). Keep up the amazing work and as always, thanks for the music.
Distgrossing, going to use it. 😆
Gotta keep your eye on the ball when watching SRV!

Yes. absolutely.
Hell yeah you can love both. They were both awesome. How great would it have been to see them on stage together or collaborate on an album?
love the class and your style with your program...keep the faith man.....youre doing great
That’s the smoothest guitar swap ever
Could not even tell he broke a string. Freakin awesome.
Broke a string, went beast mode. He was famous for that. He also played the heaviest gauge strings available.
React to: Stevie Ray Vaughan - Life Without You - Capitol Theatre
SRV would agree with you about Hendrix If they were still alive they would be on a front porch burning down the house.
I prefer not to think of one being better than the other (although being born and raised in Austin TX probably makes me biased towards SRV). Anyway, I prefer to think of them together somewhere jamming together. Somewhere no strings ever break. No TV producers ever signal for them to wrap it up. Guitar change faster than a NASCAR pit crew tire change. Smooooooooooooth
Plus, credit to those folks in the shadows, like the guy helping him make the 🎸 switch...
i always wonder what he whould have done and jimmy too they both are great
Jimi Hendrix is what I started out with and I love them both subscribe great reaction
Now that was a fantastic guitar tech.
Jimi Hendrix had a huge influence on Stevie Ray Vaughan growing up one of the reasons he does Voodoo Child and does it really well
Love your comparison and view point, well done!
Stevie didn't play the guitar, he attacked it with every fiber of his being.
You caught the professionalism right there brother, he switched guitars (after breaking a string no doubt) without skipping a beat.
The GOAT!
Your are correct, they both would have gotten better, amazing. Never missed a note
Their both my favorite guitarists.
Wonderful
East Texas Boogie-Woogie Blues . . . . Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm
I do believe you got it!
I admired Jimmie, he was innovative and rock. I love SRV but I love the blues. My preference. Stevie would probably say Jimmie was best. He revered those who came before him.
Col and smooth....
Dude, Jimi is also my favorite with SRV coming right after. I agree, can't we just love them both? Jimi was 27 when he died. Have you heard the Electric Ladyland or Axis Bold As Love albums? Glad to see Rory Gallagher on that list. SRV inspired me and is slash was and Rory filled it
Rip Johnny winter
He broke sooooo many strings
I love your commentary! 👍🏼
