I'm just saying, last year you started out the year with a five star and didn't read anything better than that for most of the year and had a giant five star slump in the middle of the year - so maybe this year needs to be different and this is actually an auspicious start! (trying to be on the bright side here)
Set yourself free of that 5 star pressure! You’re still going to have a great year. Also a fun follow up reading vlog could be reading your other 4 options to see if any of them were 5 stars. Plus it gives you an excuse to read books your excited about and will probably help your goal of having a high reading average
I'm just shocked you thought Emily Wilde's was focused mainly on romance, because the thing I liked was that the romance was just a part of it. I'm not a romance girlie. The last word, people are liking it but I DNF'ed it.
I feel the same about romance! So having the love story be a part of the whole fantasy was lovely! To me that makes it even more like Howl's Moving Castle which is another fav (when I first started reading Emily someone said the ML is quite similar to Howl)!
My first read of this year was Emily Wilde, and I gave it 5🌟!!! So freaking happy about it, this year promises to be a good one, and I’m sure you’ll find many good ones throughout it ❤
My first read of last year was a 2 star read but last year, quality wise, ended up being my best year since I got back into reading so I genuinely think you’ll also have an amazing year!! Also I hope you do a vlog where you read the rest of the books from this video, I think it would be really interesting to see your thoughts about them in a full vlog ☺️
My first read last year was a 2 star and my thoughts were "it's only up from here" 😂 i ended up having the best average reading score I've had in years (3.86... we're getting closer to that 4!) because i found some of my all time favourites through the rest of the year! ❤ hoping for even better reading years for us both this year! 🥳📚☀️
So sorry to hear you didn't love Emily Wilde's! My first book of the year this year was also a 3 star (Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri) so you and I are in the same boat. My first book of last year was also a 3 star and I don't feel that it affected my reading year negatively at all. You could always do a reading vlog where you read the other books from this video and try to "redeem the year" if any of them are 5 stars. It seems like there is a lot of potential in these other books. Glad to see you are feeling better and good luck with your next read! =)
My first book of the year was House in the Cerulean Sea and it was hands down a 5⭐️ one of the best books I’ve ever read BUT your year can only go up from here!!
I agree with the comments saying maybe this year you'll get more five stars throughout the year because you didnt start with one. The opposite of last year. The universe will balance you out!! 🌌💜 I also wanted to start the year on a high note so I read a third book of a romance series I've been loving. It took me a while to get through it but I ended up loving it as well. Now I've started like 5 books but can't get myself to finish anything else 😭
Sorry your first book wasn't what you wanted ): I hope the rest of your reading year goes much better! I started my year with a 5-star read but followed that by DNFing my next two reads lol and so you never know how things will go!
I was so hoping you’d pick Emily Wilde because it was my favorite book of 2023, but I’m so sorry you didn’t love it!!! Don’t worry, though, I’m sure tons of 5 stars are coming soon for you!
I picked The Mark of Athena as my first book of the year and I loved it. It's going to be fine and an amazing reading year. Like many people said the only way now is up. Many five stars to come!
Good luck for the move. Things can only get better book wise. I’m 6 books in but have had a 2, 3 and then bunch of 4 stars. Still waiting for the allusive 5 stars.
You’re amazing, it’s gonna be amazing, your trip is will be amazing! Five star reads are coming your way! My first 4 books of this year were all under three stars, when I only had two under three stars, the entirety of 2023, but then it was backed by 2 5stars! Everything is going to be okay!
i would highly recommend listening to the audio while physically reading everyone in my family!!! you can definitely tell the author had the narration in mind while writing it & the narrator is A+
If you want some cozy fantasy but WITHOUT the focus on romance I think you might like a natural history of dragons!! It has a similar aspect of studying magical creatures and a very charming narration
Bummer! This one is on my list as well. I started the year with Cobalt Red which is about the exploitation in the Congo. Super sad, but really important and informative. Highly recommend!
My first book of the year was a contemporary romance called Tattered by Devney Perry, and I gave it 3.5/4 stars. I think your reading year will be what you make it. Just have positive energy/vibes and hopefully it will be good!!
Hi Megan. I am sorry to hear about your experience. I like your channel very much, it always great time and so much joy. What works for me is when you don't feel or like book- better to drop it( forever or for now it will come later). Life is short, variety of books is vast. Good luck with the hunt for the great book 🤗
My first read of the year was "And then there was none" by Agatha Christie, and I gave it 4 stars. Also listened to a bbc 1 hour long version of the story, and it was quite good! I think I'll have a great reading year. I hope you do too.
First of all don't put too much pressure on yourself to read if you still need to recover and reframe your mind. you still have a life to live and we will as be sat waiting patiently. Secondly I have that game on my phone and it annoys me how much a bloody love it because it has no place taking my time up like that! And lastly that was pure sabotage on your part 😂 should have just picked up bookshops and bonedust and got that 5 / 4 star rating and made progress with your series. (I have read it and really enjoyed it, it took me a moment to get into it as it wasn't the cafe but I cried at the ending and I'd definitely recommend you pick it up soon to bring back positive feelings towards your love of books) 🎉
Megan this is the beginning of the best feadinbrg hear yet. you might not get all of them, but that's okay! your first five star is going to be absolutely amazing and the feeling you'll get from that is going to be amazing.
Nah, I think you’re good. Your taste with fantasy books is pretty consistent imo. This falls into the same category of (like you said half a soul) but also daughter of the moon goddess, divine rivals and maybe even belladonna. None of which you highly enjoyed (but were hyped by a lot of people). On the other hand you loved books like ninth house, once and future witches and the bear and the nightingale, which a lot of other people didn’t. All this to say: I think you need to get your fantasy recs based on what you like (in these examples it’d be plot before romance, I think). Not saying you should never pick them up, but maybe manage your expectations realistically? Either way and all ways: I hope you have a fun reading year, expectations be damned!!! 👑
You’re going to have an awesome year. Nothing to worry about. Part-way into Love Theoretically last week I was adoring it, but the spicy scenes were so cringe for me that I just couldn’t. They had so much chemistry to start out with. I hope you like it more than I did when you get to it.
My first book was also a five star prediction that turned out to not be five stars, so i feel your brain😂 hope you find your first 5 star of the year soon
My first book was Black River Orchard. Decent start to the year. I really didn’t see the romance in Emily Wilde either, but figure they’ll build on it in book 2.
My first book of the year is almost always a 2 or 3 stars. Which doesn't bother me because I'm not looking to read the best book of the year on the first day. I just want something fun and easy to start the year which means it's usually not the best written or plotted, but it's a nice start.
I ended up giving this 4⭐ but it took me about 3 weeks to read, there was something about the pacing that I couldn't get fully invested in, I also think this book is just too damn long! Also I started the year sick & not sleeping well and it has taken me until this week to get back into the swing of reading! 😭 My first book of the year was a novella by Fonda Lee called 'Untethered Sky' which was a 4⭐!
Bahahah. I love Wendell so this is so fun to watch 😂 Spoilers ahead ‼️⚠️ I loved that he and Emily were opposites. Particularly cause of the irony. At first, it’s just “grumpy unsocial girl” x “sunshine social-butterfly boy”. But then when the story progresses, that same girl would risk her life to save people she’s barely known while that boy wouldn’t so much as bat an eye if everyone around him had their head on a chopping block 😂 Also. Yeah. The whole sleeping around was something to associate with the fae. Wendell somehow sleeping around in spite of the girl he’s in love with being right next door *is* meant to be ridiculous. Fae have no concept of human morals.
I DNF'd Emily Wilde last year and I have no desire to read it, even after all the praise it got. My first read this year was Shark Heart and gave it 4.75⭐️ I loved it I just wanted more from the ending and I haven't had a 5 star yet but I'm very hopeful 😂
Yes I dnf'ed Emily Wilde's too!! I've never found another person who also quit it so this is exciting! I was just so bored that I became angry at the idea of listening to this book because I felt like I was being catfished. I listened for over 2 hours just to have 10 minutes of interesting content and was so disappointed and resentful after
I read the entire collection of the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells and then Isabel Canas’ Vampires of El Norte… suffice to say I think I’ve used up all my 5 stars for the year 😬🙏🏻
Hey if it makes you feel better by first read of the year was one my most anticipated books, Last Days by Adam Nevill. It took me 6 days to read it and it was a 2 star (I only give out 2 stars if I actually despised a book lol - I save my 1 stars for when I DNF). However, I just finished three five stars that are some of the best stuff I’ve ever read!!
Girl, I started off the year with a 1 star.😢😅 I have to feel a visceral haye/dislike for that to happen. For perspective, I didn't give any 1 stars last year (out of the 100 books I read). Luckily, it's been smooth sailing from there, because the only way is up. Lol There is hope! 😻
I thought Monstrilio was awful. 😩 2 stars from me and I was being generous because it was a debut. I'm so ready to hear your opinions at some point. 🤞🏼
Just read those other two books now and then if they are a 5 stars then at least you have one or more 5 stars in January. If book 1 is a three, but you have 2-4 other 5 stars in the same month then it’s proof the superstition isn’t valid!
I didn’t like Wendell either and couldn’t connect with the book. So I totally get your feelings. But that doesn’t mean the rest of the year won’t be great reads.
I DNF'ed Emily Wilde's after about 27% because I was so unbelievably bored that I was resenting listening to it. I disliked every character we met and there were literally 10 minutes of this audiobook i was interested it. I don't pick up a lot of mainstream popular books because I'm always let down by them and this just cemented that I should never listen to reviews. It's one of the few times I've ever felt like I was reading a different book than everyone else because I hated it so much and everyone else seems to die for it.
My first read of 2024 was a very strong 4.25, and my last two reads were 5 stars. You didn't start the year the best but it can pick up very quickly! I liked Emily Wilde, I gave it a 3.75, but the romance part was by far the worst part to it, and I'd have preferred rivals to friends, not rivals to lovers. Wendell being in love with her felt very hackneyed to me.
Also, I have read 4 books. - The Appeal - Janice Hallett 4⭐️ - The Things We Leave Unfinished by Rebecca Yarros 5⭐️ - The Truth About Melody Browne by Lisa Jewell 3.5⭐️ - Cambridge Blue by Alison Bruce 3⭐️
I love your challenges but I really thing u are being to harsh on yourself & to the enjoyment of reading 💖 for the next one maybe u could try “if one of this 5 books is a 5⭐️ my year will be great” 😍 and just like that u get rid off all the extra unnecessary stress and the idea that u’ll have a bad reading year just because of one book 🦄
I'm sorry your first read wasn't a 5 but hopefully you'll get more competition for your favorite book fo the year next year. You should do a vlog, if you want to, reading the other picks and seeing if any of the other ones would be a 5 star
This is so fun, Emily Wilde was also my first book of the year! I gave 4 stars but I felt the same way about the romance. I didn't feel the chemistry and the guy was a little annoying. I also feel the book is not memorable, probably at the end of the year is going to be a 3 star read for me. But let's not descourage, the rest of the reads are going to be amazing!
Hope you’re feeling better soon and I hope you get back to reading when your better . I haven’t read much in January as been super poorly too with Covid xxx
This is fantastic because I own most of these books and need suggestion for what to start! So I’m going to go read everyone in my family lol not Emily wilde
After checking to make sure I had this right, it seems like it would be a book that's ridiculous, over the top, or really exaggerated. Or one that's "so bad that it's good" the way certain cheesy movies are.
I did not like Emily Wilde, either. 2⭐️ for me. Have so much fun with Tom on your guys’s 2 month adventure. I’m sure it will be filled with 5⭐️ experiences and reads!! 😘
Just to reassure you, your first book of the year won't determine what your year is like, or even what your reading year is like. Other good books will come your way!!

(trying to be on the bright side here)
I totally agree! Also, I feel the first 5⭐ has to be more organic, you just pick up a book and just click
Set yourself free of that 5 star pressure! You’re still going to have a great year. Also a fun follow up reading vlog could be reading your other 4 options to see if any of them were 5 stars. Plus it gives you an excuse to read books your excited about and will probably help your goal of having a high reading average
I just went through *so* many emotions 😮💨
Kayla pls forgive meeeeee😭🫶🏻
Don’t put such pressure on yourself. There’s lots of room for growth . Allow the new year to have its own vibes as they come.
My first book of the year was A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher, cozy fantasy with zero romance.
My first read of this year was Emily Wilde, and I gave it 5🌟!!! So freaking happy about it, this year promises to be a good one, and I’m sure you’ll find many good ones throughout it ❤
I DNF'd my first book of the year and I'm hoping you're right about this superstition. I'm not SUPERsticious bit I'm a little sticious.
My first read of last year was a 2 star read but last year, quality wise, ended up being my best year since I got back into reading so I genuinely think you’ll also have an amazing year!! ooh love this idea

It will get better! Now you have more of a chance for your reading to get better this year, instead of worse
I’m so relieved to have found someone who has the same thoughts about this book as I do!!! I didn’t love it nearly as much as everyone else seems to
cracking up at your facial expressions when reading the first chapters 😂
Yes lol, especially with Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone
My first book of the year is "Everyone in my family has killed someone", but I've also had a slow start, so I've not finished it yet
My first read of 2024 was Taste by Stanley Tucci and it was just what I needed! You're still going to have a great year!❤
You’re amazing, it’s gonna be amazing, your trip is will be amazing! Five star reads are coming your way! My first 4 books of this year were all under three stars, when I only had two under three stars, the entirety of 2023, but then it was backed by 2 5stars! Everything is going to be okay!

If you want some cozy fantasy but WITHOUT the focus on romance I think you might like a natural history of dragons!! It has a similar aspect of studying magical creatures and a very charming narration
i was hoping you'd pick the last word but very excited for when you do pick it up!
Bummer! This one is on my list as well. I started the year with Cobalt Red which is about the exploitation in the Congo. Super sad, but really important and informative. Highly recommend!
Hopefully it will go up from here 🤞😊🤞 sending all the best reading vibes your way and keep believing for many 5 star books this year 🤩🙌.
My first book of the year was a contemporary romance called Tattered by Devney Perry, and I gave it 3.5/4 stars. I think your reading year will be what you make it. Just have positive energy/vibes and hopefully it will be good!!
My first book of the year was a DNF, which has never happened to me before. And it was a much-anticipated sequel. 😢
I’m SO excited you’re back and I can’t wait to see what you read for the rest of the year!
I have read four four star reads. 😂 I too am in search of a five star. I THINK the one I am reading now might be. It is The Book that Wouldn't Burn.
You will still have a great reading year!! Good luck with the move!!
My first book was The Appeal. I loved it. I ate it up so fast and gave it 5 stars ❤️
My first read (started in 2024 because I had some carry overs) was Murder in the Family and it was 4 stars
I also gave this book a 3...felt pretty much the same as you did about the romance.
I dnfed my first book of the year and then the next 4 I read were 5 stars for me!! So I'm sending you that same energy because I was also stressed 😂
I really didn’t see the romance in Emily Wilde either, but figure they’ll build on it in book 2.
now we need a vlog reading the other 4 books!
Love theoretically is my favorite by Ali so far
Yeah, Emily Wilde was a 3* read for me as well. I really don't understand the fuss 😂.
I DNF’ed Emily wild 😂😂. Love theoretically might be my fav Ali Hazelwood so I was really hoping you’d pick it!
My first book of the year is almost always a 2 or 3 stars. Which doesn't bother me because I'm not looking to read the best book of the year on the first day. I just want something fun and easy to start the year which means it's usually not the best written or plotted, but it's a nice start.
I already have a DNF this year, and a 4.5.. so no clue how this year will go.
My first book that I finished this year was a 1 star and due to limited free time it is probably the only book I will finish this month
Bahahah. I love Wendell so this is so fun to watch 😂
Spoilers ahead ‼️⚠️
I loved that he and Emily were opposites. Particularly cause of the irony. At first, it’s just “grumpy unsocial girl” x “sunshine social-butterfly boy”. But then when the story progresses, that same girl would risk her life to save people she’s barely known while that boy wouldn’t so much as bat an eye if everyone around him had their head on a chopping block 😂
Also.

I was just so bored that I became angry at the idea of listening to this book because I felt like I was being catfished. I listened for over 2 hours just to have 10 minutes of interesting content and was so disappointed and resentful after
Sorry it wasn’t a 5 star for your start of the year, the only way is up! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on The Last word as I LOVED it!
I’m so sad you didn’t love Emily Wilde like I did, but I have faith that you are still going to have an amazing reading year!! 💕
Last year you peaked too soon. This year you’re still going to discover your favourite book of the year and that’s exciting. 🎉
I read the entire collection of the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells and then Isabel Canas’ Vampires of El Norte… suffice to say I think I’ve used up all my 5 stars for the year 😬🙏🏻
My first and second reads of 2024 were 5 ⭐ 😊
you and tom are so cute🥺☺️
I hope it's going to be five stars!
You’re ramping up! You weren’t in fighting form. Makes sense your book wasn’t either. Please vlog the others that were in consideration!
your reaction to monstrilio 🤣🤣 yuppp
Girl, chinese new year is just around the corner, start anew then
Hey if it makes you feel better by first read of the year was one my most anticipated books, Last Days by Adam Nevill. I thought Monstrilio was awful. 😩 2 stars from me and I was being generous because it was a debut. I'm so ready to hear your opinions at some point. 🤞🏼
Nooo Wendel is love ❤😂😂
my first book (the soulmate by sally hepworth) was like 1.5 stars so i feel you 😢
Just read those other two books now and then if they are a 5 stars then at least you have one or more 5 stars in January.
Wendell being in love with her felt very hackneyed to me.
I read the lost by Natasha Preston it was a solid four stars. I’m not really fond of open ended books
My first read was Iron Flame and I absolutely hated it! 😬
When you didn't choose the ali Hazelwood I was like... mistakes were made 😂 just because you know you like her and it was a safer choice!
Ahhh the last word was a five star for me but I regifted Emily Wilds book 😂 my first book of the year was a three star too tho! (Crown of midnight)
Always click so fast onto your videos😍 are you doing TBR cluedo this month?
My first book this year was The Appeal by Janice Hallett and I really enjoyed it and gave it a 4⭐️ (PS I have The Last Word 5⭐️🙈)
Also, I have read 4 books.
- The Appeal - Janice Hallett 4⭐️
- The Things We Leave Unfinished by Rebecca Yarros 5⭐️
- The Truth About Melody Browne by Lisa Jewell 3.5⭐️

Looking back, my first book of the year is always a three or a four star. I don't think that has anything to do with the year overall for me.
My first book of the year was a disappointment! It was a 2.5/3 stars.
I'm 9 minutes in and if you don't love Everyone In My Family... I don't know which way is up anymore.
Emily Wilde isn't a debut though.
Hope you’re feeling better soon and I hope you get back to reading when your better . I haven’t read much in January as been super poorly too with Covid xxx
This is fantastic because I own most of these books and need suggestion for what to start! So I’m going to go read everyone in my family lol not Emily wilde
Hello! As a non native English speaker, I'd love if someone could explain to me what "camp" means in the bookish context. Thanks!
After checking to make sure I had this right, it seems like it would be a book that's ridiculous, over the top, or really exaggerated. Or one that's "so bad that it's good" the way certain cheesy movies are.
if it makes you feel better also strugled with emily wilds :)
omg patreon cameo
My first book of the year was a DNF...
I feel so out of the loop! Who is the blonde woman in the reaction clips? What I am I missing? (I’m an American please forgive me!)
I did not like Emily Wilde, either. 2⭐️ for me. Have so much fun with Tom on your guys’s 2 month adventure. I’m sure it will be filled with 5⭐️ experiences and reads!! 😘
Meg start a twitch and just play these cozy lil games
My first read was a 3⭐️, but number 11 was a 5⭐️. You just never know
Just to reassure you, your first book of the year won't determine what your year is like, or even what your reading year is like. Other good books will come your way!!
